I went to The Midnight Special in the 70's and you were told to sit and behave. You sat on the floor and there was more than one stage. You just pivoted your butt to the one the group was using. You would be in front for one group and in the back for another. They considered themselves songwriters above all, more than performers. They weren't into flash but perfection as singers and were as good or better live. They wrote their songs although none of them could read or write music. They wanted their songs to endure and they have certainly done that.
When you listen to the studio version you will discover some differences. Barry is in the low key the whole song in this live version but on the studio version it is him with the high falsetto voice. It was when they recorded this song that they discovered that they could sing in this high voice mainly because Arif Mardin, their producer, asked if anyone of them could scream in tune and that especially Barry had this full control of this voice. You see and hear in this video that it is Maurice that takes the high notes as Barry has to stay low. And Maurice really does a good job with this.

His heart had been weakened by his drug addiction over the years which, by the way, was also the main reason for his split from Victoria Principal. He also had a congenital heart problem that was later also discovered in Barry and Barry's second son Ashley.
