Maurice was a genius with his ability to plug in that third harmony. He was very under appreciated but was so unique with his many abilities. Still blows my mind that they each taught themselves how to do this incredible harmony when they were just kids! Couldn’t read or write music, taught themselves instruments… Incredible talent!

Some great stuff in the late 50’s and 60’s - Elvis isn’t the King for no reason. The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, and The Beatles, of course, all started in the late 50’s early 60’s. I think music took a dive somewhere in the 80’s and whatever is being produced today is just crap. We call it 7/11 music… 7 lyrics repeated 11 times then pitch corrected and auto-tuned. 🤣

I remember walking around my neighborhood as a 14 or 15 year old, carrying my transistor radio with the earphone plugged in, singing this song out loud at the top of my lungs, caring little for what anyone thought. While this version is good, the studio version has more power to it. This song, along with "Jive Talkin' " , were big hits for The Bee Gees in 1975. Love y'all's channel .

What’s great about this performance is that you get a hear the range of Maurice’s voice. Because it’s live performance he has to sing some of the parts that Barry sang on the album, and in a higher register than normal. He doesn’t miss a beat. Check out Walking On Air with Maurice on lead vocals. It’s from their final studio album and shows that they were still very much on top of their game.
They were musical geniuses along with being talented.
Robin has a beautiful haunting sadness to his voice.

If there could be a best Bee Gees song, this would be in the running. I have it on my alarm clock. Barry wakes me up every morning with that strong "Here We Are." The "Main Course" album from 1975 was, and is, a masterpiece. Barry and Robin's voices are so perfect together. This was a live performance, so Barry couldn't do the ad libs that are in the studio version and the lead at the same time. I wanted to scream about halfway through when you heard Mo's "little surprise" for you to just wait until you hear Mo do his great high harmony and those funky ad libs. All three get the love.
Love how they improvised this live version. Almost as if they're saying 'yes, this is difficult but we can do it, we're the Bee Gees!' So much of the brothers catalogue was difficult to reproduce live but they did here and it's just a fantastic record of the time.

This started the falsetto, they could just do it all!! Funny fact, on the recorded version Barry does the falsetto but live Maurice had to do it because Barry was carrying the lead. It's crazy how good they all are. Watch Run to me

I believe on the album version Barry sang the falsetto parts but to do it live Maurice took the falsetto part because of the other parts Barry was already singing. Both versions are great. Thanks for playing this one.

They all had falsetto, usually Maurice would do his falsetto in live performances and he wouldn't really do the ad libs that Barry does. Robin did some falsetto high harmonies for some of the disco songs and he had one or two songs where he does falsetto.
But the original version of this song Barry does the falsetto notes throughout the song. Nights on Broadway was the first time Barry discovered his falsetto.

The harmonies were gorgeous. And you can just tell immediately that this is their live vocals. What the audience heard is what we hear. Record companies have been retroactively pitch correcting old live performances of many wonderful bands. It’s a tragedy but it’s true. This performance is untouched and natural. This is what great singers sound like when their voices aren’t processed by software that takes away the natural expressiveness of the human voice that depends on a constant, subtle variation in pitch.

Great reaction ladies! All their performances on the "Midnight Special" had to be live. Show rules. Every performance was amazing! I know that I requested "I Can't See Nobody" using their 1974 Melbourne concert but Robin's performance of this great song on the "Midnight Special" is by far his most heartfelt. He definitely pours his heart and soul into both performances but the "Midnight Special" is truly worth a look! The only disappointment is at the very end because they sing out the credits and that's why I usually suggest their 1974 concert to hear this amazing man do his thing! Of course you could react to both! 😃

Hi, Laurie: I already left a comment for this reaction but your comment reminded me that I had seen the Bee Gees in concert in 1974. It was at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto with my brother and a friend who is gone now. We got cheap seats way up in the green section and I took my camera with a 450mm telephoto lens and got quite a few pictures. My clearest memory is that they ended the concert with 'Wind of Change' and everyone was on their feet participating. That was the only concert I ever saw except for the free 'Wednesday' and free 'Stampeders' concerts at my high school.

IMO you can really tell the level of talent on the Midnight Special. Those bands went on with no accutone, no computers, nothing but talent and they sounded great live because thats all they did back then. They did so many live dates that they got really good.

Yes, Moe was the real laid back and lots of fun one. Barry always said that Moe was the middle leg of the tripod and that when he died he and Robin could not be the Bee Gees anymore without their middle leg holding them all together. But boy do we love all 4 bothers - Barry, Robin, Maurice & Andy. God bless them all x

This is the very song that Barry discovered his falsetto, and he continued using it from then on. Love the Bee Gees they are the best, So talented. Mo once said in an interview that he didn't sing in falsetto he just had an extremely high voice. He sounded so good anyway. You seem to enjoy the Bee Gees as much as I do. Great reaction. I heard Mo's interview, too, and I couldn't understand why he thought his high voice wasn't falsetto. Of course it was falsetto! Maybe not strong enough to do an entire lead vocal like Barry, but still.

This was the song all Three of the Bee Gees discovered their Falsettos. The Producers asked could they sing like a scream or excited sound. They kept Harmonizing higher and higher. they discovered they all could do falsetto but Barry could do it the longest. in the studio barry does more falsetto but in live performances sometimes Robin or Maurice has to do the part.

This album, to me, almost had the feel of a 'come back' album although they had been continually releasing great albums all along. I shared somewhere else on TH-cam that by 1975, I had a total of 21 Bee Gees albums. You should listen to 'Country Lanes' from this same album which in my opinion is one of Robin's absolute best songs to showcase his amazing voice. Also, a very early song called 'I Am The World' fits into this category for Robin.
Robin wrote "I am the world" at 15 yet the lyrics are so deep.
Mau was playing the crap out of that funky syncopated bass line while singing...not easy. I love how all 3 of them use their head and chest voices alternately here and there. They all had just about the same kind of tone. Barry just had more power in his chest voice than the others, and that unbelievable falestto. All 3 of those dudes had great voices and musical instincts. Mau also was a killer piano player.

The Bee Gees defy all the wonderful adjectives. They were legends, with each brother having amazing musical talents. What's even more endearing to the fans is that they came from very poor beginnings and were not trained musicians. They could not read music but were self-taught and had a natural giftedness.

Nights On Broadway is an outstanding Bee Gees song from their Main Course album. It's a historic album in their catalog because it was where they updated their sound and re-invented themselves. Their previous albums didn't sell well and they hit a dry spell. So, they decided to listen to what was popular on the radio and start to blend it into their own music. That's when their sound changed to Funk, R&B, and disco. The results were that, from 1975-1979, The Bee Gees had one of the greatest runs in the history of popular music. During that time-frame, they had 8 #1 hits plus many top 10's and top 40's as well. All of those songs came from their most successful four album stretch with Main Course, Children Of The World, Saturday Night Fever, and Spirits Having Flown. I have each one of those great albums and would highly recommend them. The Bee Gees are my all-time favorite musical group. As I stated before, while I love their music from every time-frame of their careers, I have always been partial to their 1975-1979 disco era music as my very favorite.

Another Bee Gees song that really shows all three brothers vocals would be (Fanny be tender with my love) if Mom hasn't mentioned it yet. Then of course there's also the younger brother Andy Gibb who was a solo star in his own right. He's just as good.

They all have very wide vocal ranges, with Robin’s being the greatest, then Barry, then Mo. My absolute top pick for you to hear Mo’s high harmony is their live cover of Bob Dylan’s mega hit song BLOWIN IN THE WIND. My top pick for hearing Robin’s amazing baritone is SOMEWHERE from the Broadway play West Side Story. He was 15 or 16yo at most, and it’s one of the “karaoke” recordings they made just playing around in the study with backing tracks they had found, so probably was made in one take, and possibly little to no practice... which could not be done without natural talent and perfect pitch. Both suggestions are stunning!!

The diff between the Bee Gees 60's sound a 70's were miles apart. to pop and only moderate success to the 70's when they added bits of soul and became superstars with songs like this one.

Yes, you nailed it. Maurice "made" this song stand out with his falsetto performance! Like I've said before, never has a trio of falsetto singing males been so dominant in the music industry. Yes, they started young, but it takes pure talent to sing as clear as they do in their falsetto voices! Something not just anyone can do. And to have a trio of them? Just really never seen before or since. Great reaction video again. I will be hanging around with you two more often. I really like HONEST reactions, and you two have it.

I had not heard this song before. It does have the "classic" Bee Gees sound to it although I find it airy and almost ethereal. It is a very pleasant surprise especially since I was not a huge fan of the entire "disco" era. I am learning to like even that era and I constirbute it mostly to the two of you.. Thank you so much for opening my eyes to this group of extremely talented souls.

Maurice actually sang falsetto in the Bee Gees before Barry Gibb started to do so starting in 1975. Interestingly, Barry, despite singing most of his life, didn't know he could sing falsetto until the age of 29. Here's a story from an article called: "How the Bee Gees’ Trademark Falsetto Sound Came to Be." It was in Miami (1975) that the Bee Gees began experimenting with new sounds, piggybacking on the influence of R&B and shows like “Soul Train.” While recording “Nights on Broadway,” producer Arif Mardin asked that someone harmonize while screaming in the background, Maurice remembered. That was the first time Barry sang falsetto.
(Imagine if this never happened what the Bee Gees would have sounded like from 1975 through 1979.)
“I was thinking, my god, where is this coming from? I can do this. My whole life I never knew I could do this,” Barry joked.
“Everybody’s giving me credit,” Mardin said in the film. “No, he was singing it. I said, ‘Keep on doing it.'”
The band soon embraced disco and dance music, making use of Barry’s falsetto, which he wields with almost astonishing ease. “We found another sound; we found a new sound. I came up with a lot of new ideas to suit the falsetto,” Barry remembered. “Everybody was saying the same thing: ‘Do that falsetto again, do that falsetto again.’ It was fine for me; I was having a ball.”
This was released before disco, they always had a heavy R&B/ funk vibe. I love the medley they perform from this show. Check it out.
I love the bass lines in all their songs. Maurice composes the bass lines in all the recordings. When in concert, sometimes he plays the bass, but if he doesn't, the bassist still plays what he composed.

Barry discovered his falsetto voice more towards the disco era. Once he found it, he pretty much made that his trademark voice. I prefer his natural voice over the falsetto but it let him go into a whole new world of the BeeGees
