  • Lieutenant Colonels Banastre Tarleton and John Graves Simcoe - a true story of loyal soldiers and close friends during the American War of Independence.
    Banastre Tarleton (August 21, 1754-January 15, 1833) was a British Army officer during the American Revolution who became notorious for his actions in the southern theatre of the war. He commanded the British legion and was one of the most feared British officers. He gained his reputation for brutality following the Battle of Waxhaws, where he reputedly had American prisoners killed. During his service in the colonies, he met John Graves Simcoe (25 February 1752 - 26 October 1806) who commanded the Queen's Rangers. They would fight alongside each other several times until the end of the war at Yorktown. Following their military service, Simcoe went on to become Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada while Tarleton became Mayor and representative of Liverpool the British Parliament.

    Simcoe in Turn felt like a much more fleshed out character than Tarleton in The Patriot. Simcoe was a character you could hate yet love yet sympathize yet never understand completely. Tarleton was just the stereotypical "villain". However, both the film and series were marvelous to say the least.

      The Patriot always seems like American propaganda but Turn did a good job at making you sympathise with both sides. I thought Simcoe and Major Andre were excellent in it and I liked that they referenced little historical moments and quotes. I would've loved to have seen a young and accurate Tarleton in the show but I think Jordan took his place as Simcoe's apprentice. Simcoe, Tarleton and Arnold was the reunion I was hoping for

      @@Epicilem Turn is probably my favorite series, either tying or being second to The Last Kingdom. Both are absolutely amazing series. I am in love with the American Revolution, and Turn introduced me to a different battle that was waging: a battle of intelligence, secrecy, corruption, and civilian sacrifice.

      I wouldn't say I "love" or "sympathize" with Simcoe. I love him as a villain. What makes him great is the recognition that even murderous psychopaths might have a more interesting, or even, uh, sort of tender side. But they're still murderous pyschopaths, and THAT is damned interesting. It's also why Robert Rogers is such a great character, and it's why we love our cats. We joke about how our cat would definitely say something like " the bayonet, is the finest weapon (for close-quarter killing)". :D

      @@Julesy980 True. I understand that Simcoe is a sociopath or even a psychopath, but he's still human. He wants to love, to have a family. He's just a hardcore soldier.. And a sociopath lol

      @@Julesy980 I loved watching Turn. They did a great job with the characters to the point that I was rooting for some of the British characters like Major Andre and Benjamins father. I also sympathized with Rogers even though he was dirty and uncouth. I didn't feel remorse for Simcoe but they did make him come off as someone that did not know he was a psycho and obviously lacked social skills. Poor Major Hewlett !!

    Simcoe was certainly portrayed as a villain in the television series, but as a resident of a city on the New York/Ontario border, I am aware that he was well-regarded in his role as the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada from 1791 until 1796 in southern Ontario and the region of Georgian Bay and Lake Superior. His accomplishment included founding York (now Toronto); help in the introduction of courts of law, trial by jury, English common law, and freehold land tenure; and the abolition of slavery in Canada. Toronto honors Simcoe with Simcoe Day. Obviously, Simcoe ha many sides to his character.

    I wouldn't doubt the British Legion inspired the rebel sentiment of the southern US, wasn't the British legion composed mostly of Carolinian's?

    • @Epicilem
      @Epicilem  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The British Legion was mostly made up of American loyalist volunteers from all over the colonies. As far as I'm aware there isn't much information about each of the individual regiments that were absorbed into the Legion. However, from what I've gathered, it was mainly made up of loyalists around New York as that's where the regiment was raised by Sir Henry Clinton. They had volunteers enlisting in the Legion from places like Philadelphia, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and, of course, New York. Although in Banastre Tarleton's memoirs, he mentions a storm hitting the fleet after they embarked from New York to southern US. This caused many ships to get lost and one to even sink. When Tarleton arrived in Georgia to prepare to besiege Charleston, only few ships actually made it and they were forced to rebuild the Legion with what they could find. This includes many southern loyalists.

    Tarleton and Simcoe were valiant glory hounds who loved there country, their King and their Empire. Both men had British patriotism so strong that losing was not and option and would result to brutality that even officers above them would frown upon and at times disapprove. People have to remember that during this time there weren’t many officers willing to buy an officers commission to fight who many viewed as their fellow countrymen. The American war of Independence never really needed to happen as the taxes that the colonist were so angry about were just compensation of station of troops in the colonies because the British Empire was financially broke after the Seven years war.

    Rightly or wrongly war is made for one winner and one loser so both sides do what is necessary therefore I never saw simcoe as a villain in same way I didn't see abe as a traitor but saw them as men who had no power to change anything do what they must in difficult circumstances,I am English yet still see it as the colonial people's right to independence but also that British soldiers have never had a choice where there sent so they had a duty as well...the shame of it was was the colonial people were British and was in effect a civil war between British people excluding mercenaries of course
