The saddest thing about the American Revolution was it was English vs. English. This is the hardest concept that I have to teach. It was more of a civil war then anything else.

@@based7900 So, as an American I can say to you that we are taught that the colonists came from England/British Isles. I think some of the confusion is not our fault but the way they teach it in school.
I can tell you exactly how schools teach it or taught it to me. So, when I was in school believe it or not, they start out by actually explaining the Queens and Kings of England. I know this is hard to believe. I think the problem is we learn this at a really early age. The King’s and Queens of England lecture was taught to me in the third grade.
They explain the King’s and Queens of England of the 16th and 17th centuries so they can then explain the reasons why the pilgrims left. When the teachers are explaining the pilgrims leaving England, they explain it making it sound like they are running away from England for good.
In a way they do run away but they are still British subjects and were still paying taxes to the crown and the crown was protecting the colonists/pilgrims from attack from the French, Spanish and Indians. American teachers leave the part out about the pilgrims still being under the British Crown even though it was probably in the textbook it was left out of the lecture.
They go into stuff like religious freedom and the different pilgrim founders and why they left etc… Then they jump to the American Revolution and the issues leading up to that. I think at that point the teachers called them American colonists when they should probably call them British colonists. They do use the term mother country.
I think during these American Revolution lectures they would use British and American to differentiate who they are talking about. This obviously confuses eight- and nine-year-old children and they see the British Soldier as the outsiders when in fact British Soldiers had been stationed in the colonies to protect them from 1636 to 1776 so that is 156 years. That part is glossed over and gives a nine-year-old the impression that the King is sending British Soldiers to attack them for not paying their taxes and wanting representation. I would say once I started going to University and working on my own family history it clicked for me that the teachers could have taught it differently. These days they do have shows that have come out like “John Adams” and “Turn” that portray the American colonists as British and show the loyalist side as well.

I'm English and I am proud of our history whatever the modern generation may think, we have shaped this world for the better the naysayers may point out the mistakes but their never give credit to the staggering achievements of our forebears which dwarf the mistakes by a huge number.

Known respected and taught in Scottish school after all we have two islands where Spanish ships ran aground resulting in some dark haired dark eyed olive skinned generations of children

A small detail. Khaki (Hindi for dust) was adopted at the siege of Cawnpore during the Indian mutiny, for camouflage as you say. Simply rub your existing clothes with Indian dust and you are dressed in khaki.

Both cities were subject to seige in the Indian mutiny. Cawnpore was not able to withstand a seige and surrendered to the mutineers. However once the soldiers, civilians had surrendered they were massacred.
I read in an old book that another method was plunging the red tunics in big cauldrons of (very) hot...tea, so the color was faded to a light brown. About Cawnpore the massacre caused a string of brutal reprisals by the British/loyalist troops, Lunknow was saved by Colin Campbell's troops (the same of the famous "thin red line")

The scarlet red uniform was worm for home service until 1902 when replaced by the Khaki service dress. Only on overseas deployments was the brown Khaki dress worn after 1885. If WW1 were to have happened in 1901 the army would still mostly be dressed in red.
I imagine they would've looked fantastic in their red uniforms but would've probably changed into the traditional world war 1 uniform as the war progressed like the French did. The French were originally wore very brightly coloured uniforms until command realised that it was just painting targets on the men. They then changed into the pale blue uniform we think of

The Patriot I think was a particularly bad clip as had very little to do with the history of what really happened saying what a great video and really cool to watch. I’ve just subscribed.
Thank you very much. I know The Patriot is quite awful in terms of historical accuracy and presents the British as monsters but, even as a Brit, the film is a guilty pleasure of mine. I wish there was more historically accurate media set in this period though.

Random Stuff: There had been many armies before Cromwell but most of them had been temporary or part-time and were only assembled when there was a threat. Cromwell organised the first full-time "regular" army.

That’s actually the reason the Navy, Marines, and Air Force are called “Royal” but the Army isn’t. The Army was established without a royal decree.

@@markrobertson6664 True. Odd thing is that many of the regiments raised since the establishment of the British Army have been conferred the title Royal. One of those peculiarities about the British that I like.
My sadness is that most of those fine regiments have disappeared or been amalgamated with others, to the point where their original identity is blurred. Its also sad that few young people are interested in a military career. That has made recruitment difficult and partly explains the disappearance of these regiments. The other explanation off course is government policy, especially since the end of the Cold War. The British Army is so hollowed out that it is no longer a Tier 1 Army.

I wonder what would have happened if George Washington and other top Colonial Militia Officers were offered a commission in the British Army (with equal status) before the outbreak of the fighting. I would think it would be difficult to wage a war without any military experienced officers.
@@alskjlskaj I should have stated before the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, not the French and Indian War (with most American colonists supporting the "British Crown".) . A interesting movie to watch is "The Last of the Mohicans", based on the fictional novel by James Fenimore Cooper. Although it takes place during the French and Indian War, it shows the conflict of attitudes between the British and American colonists, which would lead to the American Revolutionary War.
George Washington did serve in the British army as a lieutenant, in 1752 I believe, during the French-Indian war.

My original comment was based on a "What If" historical scenario. What if the best military colonial officers were offered a commission in the British Army and the original 13 colonies offered a seat in the House of Commons (giving them taxation with representation, but with little political power) . If this "What if" scenario played out, would we be the British Commonwealth States of America?

And the colonies were represented in parliament, because they were British subjects, the problems really stemmed from the distance between parliament and the colonies, meaning that it was practically impossible to have a fair representation. But I kinda see your point, Washington left the British British military because of frustration with promotion, but had he been given his well earned dues, the world could have been a very different place.

The new model army was created by Fairfax. Not Cromwell.
In December 1644, Cromwell made a great speech about how the war would never be won if they did not improve parliament's military resources (which I think that first scene is a reference to). In response, the Committee of Both Kingdoms established the New Model Army in January and so I give Cromwell credit for it's foundation. Although I do recognise that Fairfax was made commander-in-chief of the army and thus can be credited for fulfilling Cromwell's ambition

It's incredible they were so successful DESPITE a uniform that made them a walking target!
There’s a reason for that. First of all, every other European army had a distinctive colour, not just the British. The Prussians historically wore grey, the French blue, and the Spaniards yellow. This was because muskets of the period produced so much smoke, that after a few volleys, you could hardly see at all. Then, when someone walks through the smoke, you have to decide in half a second wether or not to shoot. The bright uniforms helped with that.

@@dead_eye2311 In some periods, for some units, under some kings. They also wore yellow for significant periods (1808 for example). The Spaniards really never had a persistent uniform choice, and I chose the most standout one there to make my point.
Right, before the Minie ball and rifled muskets, the useful firing range was under 150 m.or less, so having a bright color wasn't an issue, plus the red was different from the uniforms of the classical enemies, f.e. the french (pre-revolutionary) wore generally white/light grey, as the spaniards, the russians green and so on.
I don’t mean to be that one fellow but there’s some better clips for the war of Spanish Succession and the Seven Years War, there’s a film called “Churchill” and there’s a since where Churchill thinks of what his ancestors have done for Britain. It has clip of the Duke of Marlborough fighting in Blenheim then Barry Lyndon could’ve been used for the Seven Years War since the movie is set in that era. Besides that this is a wonderful video showing the redcoats progress through history and victories.

The French saved America’s bacon in this war.
What's ironic about redcoats and the American view I grew up is how wrong it is. We call them fools standing in neat line with bright red coats and white straps making a nice X. But going back to the middle ages the English made masterful use of archers to harass heavy troops at a battles out set. And used small raiding parties to force an enemy into battle in the first place. In our French and Indian war they immediately used irregular troops and green uniformed men eventually armed with rifles. The 95th rifles and kings American rifles. But those lines marching and going from column to line in minutes then giving platoon fire at 4 shots a minute was gruesome

Some of the clips were anachronistic. Scenes from the American Revolution were right after scenes from the English Civil War, and the "There is the enemy! There are your guns!" line was not from the Napoleonic Wars, but directly caused the Charge of the Light Brigade.

Since its a military ballad it does seem more than a bit odd to hear a woman singing it, especially the way she's singing it just doesn't seem to fit.
No, the original dates from Marlborough 's time and is very different. Like both though.
The song used is by the late great Gary Moore. It chronicles the story of an innocent man found guilty of robbery and sent to prison but other than being a great song it has nothing to do with the red coats. It would have been better to have used the song of the same name as sang by John Tamms and used in the TV series Sharpe. It really is a wonderful and evocative song and captures the spirit of the British soldier who forever does his duty for king and country.

'British' redcoats in 1645? Nonsense. The New Model Army was an English Parliamentarian army. The Scots had their own army and the Welsh mostly fought for the King. The British army did not formally exist until 1707. Prior to this Scots regiments were separate from the English establishment. Red coats were also worn by the Irish regts who were likewise a separate establishment.
The new model army was the first standing English army . Their uniform was predominantly red .
As explained by Keith and in the video, The New Model army was the origin of the redcoats and set the standard for what the English army should be

I can't seem to understand the need to go to war. I know it's "human nature" or at least it's what we are told when young but I know it's something we could change if enough people stop hatred and spread love instead. My Grandfather served in the Army Vietnam/ Cold War he never gave me many details besides how badly they suffered and how if everyone could just sit down talk as the grown adults they are wars could be prevented.

I find it funny how americans think that they were paying ALOT of taxes, and yet in the mother country: England the native brits were paying more than those in the colonies were, and the reason we had to tax the 13-colonies was because of our war with france during the French & Indian war and that we had to recoup our losses somehow, i do believe though that perhaps it could've been handeled abit better...another thing aswell is as some people have pointed out, alot of British Redcoats were stationed over in the colonies for over 150+ Years and i guess most of us brits saw it as the Mother country, looking after its "child" from french aggression etc.
But i am glad that today, Britain and America stand shoulder-to-shoulder during conflicts around the world and have the same values!. god bless our american comrades :)
Smuggling was rife both in Britain and in the Colonies and as such the Revenue were introduced to stamp down on this and collect the duty. In the Americas, there was a particularly effective ship and captain and he was hated by the local smugglers. In an incident that escalated the revolution, the British ship ran aground chasing the smugglers and the local smugglers decided to try and take advantage of the situation by disabling the ship but ended up killing the captain. This obviously put them on a collision course with the Crown and was seen by some as the first aggressive action of the revolution.
