Welcome to the FAA Academy, home of world-class training for air traffic controllers. It’s high quality, standardized, national training at Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, in Oklahoma City Oklahoma.
I worked at ZOA for 27 years , a great profession . You always feel like you accomplished something when you get home from work. Training is the most difficult part of your career then it gets a lot better . Good luck to all ….
@@iwagen3746 I passed the AT-SA exam with no experience or prep but if you can afford to take some basic online tutorial courses its definitely worth it. Research the different components of the test and practice those skills. Best of luck!
what is the process or steps to train? I heard training takes 3+ years sometimes, and with the shortages happening, I am curious if there are ways to reduce time to certify?
It was so nice of Jon Taffer to host this video. If I had a nickel for every pixel in this video, I'd have a nickel. True NoK resolution. This is only the low fidelity video. The high fidelity video is soon to come along with Next-Gen. Still made me smile with pride.
im so nervous i was authorized to take the ATSA next month. so im learning as much as I can! I pray that I score Best Qualified this would be an amazing career.
My take on this, as a Rtd Training Capt and Airline Pilot Union rep at regional air accident investigations, I note that only in US is it NORMAL for a military chopper to fly UNDER a plane on FINAL approach. and what if, for any number of reasons the plane drops below the Glide Path.. not a clever bunch are you?
So there's an apparent pilot shortage, eh? If only the FAA would train pilots at the level it trains controllers! Imagine the quality of airmanship. We could return to reduced ATP minimum standards. We could have a surplus of labor. We could have balanced equality since the financial barrier to entry could be subsidized through federal training. I'm sure the counter argument is that would eliminate the private sector and the losses of jobs would be devastating. There's a way to make that all inclusive.
Problem is money, here in the uk anyway you get your training paid for whilst being paid a wage to train as a controller. You end up paying 100k+ to become a commercial pilot
The biggest issue with this idea is that the vast majority of pilots aren't government employees. ATC is a government job, hence the government supplying the training. They also go through one heck of a selection process. Military pilots are also government employees and they too go through a massive selection process. There just isn't enough money budgeted to the FAA to train every pilot out there.
If the FAA was in charge of hiring and training pilots, the pilot shortage would be even worse. Controller staffing is at a literal all time low right now. Many facilities have mandatory OT, shifts running short anyway, etc...
How is recruitment going given President Trump's comments? I would like to think that people are recruited for such an important job based solely on merit.
Yeah it kinda sucks for the first month while you’re in basics. But it’s a little better once you go to OKC and receive your per diem for meals and incidentals in addition to your salary.
@@Resiliently20 okay okay, thanks for the reply, can you explain to me in detail how the process works.I thought you were in OKC for the duration of the entire training. Where are you for the first month? How long are you in OKC for, what happens immediately after you've passed. Do you have a choice in where they place you or is it just random. any tips and suggestions? How was the training? Is it extremely stressful and difficult? Ugh, it's so nerve wracking. I'm an A&P and that process was super easy. This seems like I'm training to be an astronaut 😭. My TOL says "NTE 13 months", what does that mean. Sorry for all the questions but there's very limited information on this process. If I do successfully complete it, I'm going make a very detailed video to help others.
@@youngeshmoney so the reason why the offer letter says “NTE 13 months” is because you’re basically a probationary employee for the first year. Which ultimately means your employment is temporary, and the FAA can terminate your employment for a number of things such as failure to pass your basics end of course test, failure to complete training in OKC, or behavioral things such as getting a DUI, etc… essentially you wanna be on your P’s and Q’s for the first year.
@@Resiliently20 oh okay got it, I thought that meant training was 13 months. How about pay, I'm guessing that only goes up from $34k after the 13 months? That's going to be my biggest deciding factor. I know it's only temporary, but idk if I can survive off 30k😭, that's a 60% salary cut🤦♂️
@@youngeshmoney also here’s what happens after your accept your TOL, eventually (took about 5 months for me) you will receive a CIL email with instructions on how to complete your medical and security clearance and your psychological evaluation. Once you’ve been cleared on all of that then you will receive a Firm offer letter (FOL) that will have a date of when you start basic training. Basics used to be held at the Academy in OKC but ever since COVID they’ve been doing it in a virtual classroom environment. So you’ll be attending basics online for about 1 month and then take a test that you have to pass in order to move on to initial qualification training at the FAA academy in Oklahoma City.

Did you to to a AT-CTI school? Or did you apply with no knowledge. It is my dream to become a ATC.

Ty you for thee words of encouragement!
Some people say ATC is more stressful than being an airline pilot. Would you agree?

Hey me too. I scheduled mine for mid December. Do you have any leads for study materials or practice tests??
Same! I’m using Job test prep!
Same taking it in December
I took it last year in November, scored Well Qualified. And now I’ll be starting at the Academy in 2 months! Good luck to you guys!
@@Resiliently20 any advice on what to study. Any tips or things we should definitely brush up on. Super nervous.
The ATC takes the same oath of office that, say a member of congress would take?
Yeah but we mean it

how long do all courses last/whats the duration of the full training to an air traffic controller
2 to 3 months at academy but then it depends what facility you go to how long it takes to certify there could be 1 to 2 years.

Can only us citizen apply or people from any country

Hopefully going to apply in 2025

Sure would be great if I could be hired at 34!
there could still be ways to get in if you're still interested heard a guy a couple of classes before me was 34!
Why did you wait so long?
How do i get started with the training and what are the requirements?

Are only US citizens trained or are you hiring contractors for other countries ? Ha
