I have built dozens of lithium batteries and solar systems on RVS and I would NEVER trust my life to solar. We are a hundred years from being anywhere near ready to go total electric on anything and even then we will be dependent on nuclear power.
solar panels on the sides will get a lot of sun bouncing off of the water as well. current studies are showing that vertical panels like these are actually better in areas that get a lot of solar bounce than panels angled up directly at the sun in part due to the bounce but also because the panels pointed up get hot and lose efficiency.
I love the interiors on this yacht - throw in the sun deck too. The cabins are very well done, especially the double-bunk kid's cabin. Lots of memories of a good time there for sure! I think their approach to solar is right for a boat on the water - you never know which way the sun will be facing you, so panels on all sides makes good sense.
Great idea to use all the "unused" space of the boat for solar panels. Since we have so much load shedding in South Africa, I have a bought a solar installation for my house. It was a good investment. Love it. I have 13x 550 watt panels ,8kw inverter, 2x 5kw batteries. That wattage of the boat is unreal!
Well, unreal, but is it enough to produce the needed energy? You know with running full power, the boat needs 360kw and that is still a relatively slow speed. And the battery alone will do this for about 1h. Therefore, you need to produce constantly about 400kw, and here you see the problem, the peak is only 34kw. What is the conclusion? They realised that this is not working, and so they put a fuel engine as well. I call this greenwashing, but the whole concept is so failed.
"green power" is great but I believe we will never ever replace fossil fuels. we will always need it, especially crossing a wide ocean. You really do need that backup, regarding the boat propulsion, i do not think you would need to run full speed 24/7 @@haldepet12
@@hannesmalan7550 Never say never... ;-) I agree (kinda...) that solar isn't up to the task yet, but for crossing oceans we have sailboats. They usually do have a Diesel engine as well, but that is only for close quarters maneuvering and emergencies. The close quarters maneuvering can be replaced with electric, but motoring to shore from the middle of an ocean, not so much. One channel I follow is almost done with their circumnavigation, they crossed the Atlantic with (I think) on the order of 100l of Diesel. I don't think this is "full solar" really -- not based on the amount of diesel she also can carry. The real question is whether she can run the full hotel load off the solar panels in decent sun without having to run a generator. Not even worried about propulsion... can you run the boat off solar at a mooring ball long term.
@@redwolfexr The answer is no looking at the specs. The "eco solar" is mostly a gimmick. I would be pretty surprised if the boat can run off solar at mooring without running the generators occasionally given all the bells and whistles on that boat drawing load. @@2011blueman there is no question that the boat needs to run diesel to move. Its a big boat. It size/cost appeals to people who aren't going to want to travel slowly. These solar panels are working fine to help to reduce running your generator/engine which not only cost gas but also produces noise. 34 kWp is great even when the side panels will produce less and at an other time of the day then the roof panels. But yes, if you can, place them everywhere.
The main screen at the inside helm station gave a pretty big glaring hint at what Sunreef is hiding in their engine room. Looks like they have a hydrogen range extender. I'm also wondering if it also has the ability to generate it's own hydrogen from sea water using the solar power.
@@scottmcshannon6821 Electricity from the solar panels is "use it or loose it". If you don't use it then you need to store it in the batteries. On board battery power can move this boat about 50 miles. Maybe less. Adding more batteries cost more money. Lots more money. Converting electricity to hydrogen can be cheaper than batteries for large quantity storage. The equipment to convert electricity, and sea water, to hydrogen, and oxygen for 25 or so kilowatts of available power is one up front cost. This boat has 30 some kilowatts of solar, but since they face different directions they won't all make peak output at the same time. The equipment to covert hydrogen to electricity for about 350 kilowatts to run the drive motors is a second cost. The size and cost of these 2 devices is determined by the available solar power and the size of the drive motors. Once we have these devices we can add long term storage of the hydrogen, a high pressure pump and tank, for very low cost. Doubling or tripling the size of the tank will add very little to the overall system cost as the converters stay the same. Storage capacity is limited by how much space we have in the boat and how high of pressure we're willing to use. The weight of the tank is moderate. If the tank is very large this system is much cheaper than an equivalent battery. If the tank is very small then the fixed cost of the converters makes this cost more than a battery. We could hang at anchor at a sunny, beautiful island for a month and slowly pump up our hydrogen storage while having a wonderful time swimming, fishing, diving and exploring. Then we would have enough range to move at a good speed, 5 to 10 knots, 120 to 240 miles per day, to our next stop. This wouldn't be possible with batteries. A range of more than 100 or 150 miles is the most even a large battery bank could deliver. As is this boat may do 50. The solar will then give us 25 to 50 miles per day after the batteries are drained. Progress will be slow. The alternative is to use a diesel generator to power the drive motors and buy diesel at a fuel dock when we're empty. This is quicker and cheaper. We can power or lights, freezers, stove, StarLink, etc. off the solar while at anchor, but we'll have to live with burning diesel when we move the boat more than a short distance. Today most people will take to cheaper diesel option, but somebody has to create the future, and this boat is doing that.

Nice to see you were nice to Rico, that said That is a very nice Dress , and no stripes you should wear more like items, I'm sure Rico would not mind😮😮😊😊 very nice Cat. Also
Until the infrastructure and some other technology can catch up to make the range closer to internal combustion, I think the future of most boats and cars will be highbred instead of all electric. Because of the numerous solar panels (very tastefully done) this boat will probably not have too much of a range issue. Regardless of the propulsion, beautifully done boat. Thanks for bringing this to us for a great start to the weekend.
The hot tub is not enough and there needs to be a swimming pool aft. More exercize equipment on the flybridge. Other than those items this yacht pretty much has everything anyone needs for global expeditions.
guys, maybe it can be a good idea is to visit a Wider yacht , i love hybrid yachts it is a great yacht, further all i love you guys , keep up with the great work

I know what I am buying if this Powerball ticket hits! Wish me luck. Hmm, should I get two, one for Caribbean and another for the Med. Do I get a discount if I mention NautiStyles? Enjoy the tours, thank you for the content. And of course I am being silly. I will be ordering a Bering 85.
Catamarans like this are generally in the Med during the summer and Caribbean in the Winter. You wouldn't leave a "second" cat in the Carribbean all year round because of hurricane season so it either goes to the Med, or you generally take it south to Aruba/Curacao/Colombia/etc.
Yes, I did catch you yawning before you mentioned it. 😁. Well, I think it makes sense to have solar panels on the sides……it’s a boat, it does move and drift on anchor. And Victoria ……..you look lovely as usual 🥰🙂
I am a bit sceptical on the energy requirements, my feeling is you need a huge area of solar to continuously power such a vessel, more than might be stretched out over the area available, so I expect we are looking at a fine weather day cruiser, that mainly uses shore power, that tops up with solar as to extend the range and mitigate grid use on the pontoon.
I could tell from the edits and chatter that you guys fought to get this tour in. You both did a great job and this boat is awesom. I have made over 2 million bucks in my 58 years. The wives and those kids eating and wanting stuff have killed my nice boat chances.🙄
the thing with lithium ion batteries are if they are ever to get really hot... you cant do anything about it, so they must develop a system that would eject the hot battery from the vessel itself so it can burn below water.
Can i just say, how lovely you look? You look lovely every day, in, shorts, in slacks, in dresses! Do you ever have an off day? If you do, it certainly doesn’t show. You make class and style look easy and natural. Now, back to the boats! 😍
Let me know in the comments your thoughts about the Solar Tech: is it there or not there yet??
I just saw a Meme that said: .. "I just saved $25,000 on a car battery because my car runs on gas"
Built in Poland... Its a huge living travelling space.

Other than those items this yacht pretty much has everything anyone needs for global expeditions.
guys, maybe it can be a good idea is to visit a Wider yacht , i love hybrid yachts it is a great yacht, further all i love you guys , keep up with the great work
Interesting , Thank You . An interesting ,well equipped , Moderate weather ,Island hopper . I Really like the Dumbwaiter .
Glad you enjoyed it
I can't wait to be given a follow up on the Tech. You Guys have done it again, what another beauty, however, you never identified NBBL items, there must have been some onhere.
I can't wait to see how well someone can take the combination of Solar and onboard hydrogen generation in an explorer class boat.
Love this tour!
Thanks for watching Joe!
Yes, I did catch you yawning before you mentioned it. 😁. Well, I think it makes sense to have solar panels on the sides……it’s a boat, it does move and drift on anchor. And Victoria ……..you look lovely as usual 🥰🙂
Thank you!
Imagine going on a voyage from Sydney to Los Angeles on this… What an adventure, I’m dreaming now…
That would be quite the journey!
Love the outfits you've got going on!
An all-electric Sunreef is my dream yacht 😍
Make your dreams a reality! 🤣🤪⚓️
Can i just say, how lovely you look? You look lovely every day, in, shorts, in slacks, in dresses!
Do you ever have an off day? If you do, it certainly doesn’t show. You make class and style look easy and natural. Now, back to the boats! 😍
I agree but have never seen rico in a dress
