Just curious if you also Recorded that Ghost Town you said you were in while you were out in Cali ? Is there gonna be a seperate Video for that or not really ?
Watched the first Spiderman movie there back in 2001. Met a girl in the arcade and made out in one of the halls that leads to tue back of the mall. Good times.
This is east hills mall in Bakersfield, ca. Where I live. This mall struggled for years and now has become a home for homeless, squatting. There was investors who had bought it, suppose to demo it and build a new strip mall which east siders were very excited about but sadly, that plan fell through.
When did it close exactly? I looked up the mall but couldn’t find a date. But it looks like the theater has been closed along time and I know Mervyns as a company went under back in 2008
The mall probably closed completely around 2015. The theater was the last thing to remain opened with a few small businesses, locally owned. Gottschalks was the last big store to close probably around 2011? I'm just estimating.
Holy crap! I used to live in Bakersfield, CA by Endeavor Elementary School and I remember going to this mall for fun on a weekend. Such a shame to see it like this.. ://
Oh, my word... you can say I pretty much grew up in this mall. I had my dance classes at All Stars Dance Studio when I was 3. My dad worked security and worked in the movie theater there. The mall was so different 19 almost 20 years ago. When Mervyn's went out, the entire East Hills Mall went down. Harris Gottschalks went out of business and then United Artists Theaters became Regency Theaters. Ever since it became a little mall people loved to hang out at and small businesses to make money. It had big names in there but they didn't do as well as their other locations. I worked in that exact movie theater just in May of 2016. I worked there up until February of 2017. And it honestly breaks my heart to see what people have done to this mall in just 2 years. Mervyn's had an electrical fire and someone set the picture booth on fire. I'm surprised to see the movie theater as in tact as it is. The projectors was my biggest shock to see them still there. They always told us they were gonna make something of that mall, but they never did. Now it's just an abandoned mall of memories for me. Thank you for showing what was behind those walls
The 2nd run theater I worked at for almost 20+ years, and I watched it switch over from Film to Digital. During the last couple of years there I was trusted so much, that I did a lot of jobs from changing the marquee out front to doing basic maintenance, like changing lights and minor repair work.
My mall is valley plaza (in bakersfield of course thats why im watching this video) and wish it was better than it is rn and i havent gone there for soo long idk how long now, I really forgot about east hills existance but i remember years ago ny dad telling me about a mall closing and not valley plaza so I guess this was the mall
Hey thanks for posting this. I worked at that theatre 8/16/10 - 2/26/2017, the last day the theatre was open. It's sad to see the place vandalized like that but this video was very cathartic for me in a way. Thanks for posting.
I'm not 100% sure, but that's very likely. We're on the way to go "online everything" except for stores reasonably close to where we live. Driving your car to get to a mall will probably be a thing of the past quite soon.
By the way, before anyone accuses me of mindlessly adoring the golden calf of mega big companies like Amazon, let me remind you that the internet is a way of setting up a store of your own without the, for many, unaffordable costs of renting real state for physical premises.
It seems more likely in this day and age will be likely way after. For that answer and those kids not born in that era it was a real place where you did shopping and hung out before the advanced Internet came.
I saw this video a while back when it was first posted and I remember your comment idk why I never replied initially but you're spot on... As a child here in Bakersfield we'd go to this mall every once in a while but to this day I'll never forget the echoes of kids playing and also the music they'd play. Also the big skylight windows on the ceilings in there. It was so cool and peaceful/
I remember riding the get bus from Oildale,to downtown to the east Hills mall as a teen. I saw the teenage Mutant turtles with vanilla ice in that theater. Jurassic Park with my mom and dad. As an adult I went school shopping for my kids at mervyns. Mervyn went out of business in 2005 or 2006. The last time at the mall was with my daughter for a girl Scout event. Girl Scouts around the world. The only thing I remember being open was Ben and Jerry's and the theater.
Unfortunately, what used to be popular in 80s-90s in now a thing of past! Without the anchor stores supporting them.Consumer shopping has changed, making way for online shopping, and one stop pickup, drive through,etc....its all about convience, and fast pace!! And golden state mall, they were suppose to open it again but that plan fell. They never opened it. We had three malls in Bakersfield but valley plaza stole all there customers but I still like shopping at valley plaza.
The people who bought it again to make it into a new mall fell on debt I think. 3 malls sounds cool because the Valley Plaza gets super full. If there was 2 malls (that are great ones) I think there would be less people... maybe. I don't think everyone that shops at the mall lives in that part of Bakersfield.
This was a great mall in it's day. When the two anchors (Mervin's on the west end and Gottschalks on the east end) both went out of business the mall was doomed. There was a fire in west end in 2018 as a result of squatters. There is an "identical" mall built by the same company in Yuba City. Great video. It might be nice to make contact with a "local" before these video's are published to get some "insight".
I was thinking of a different abandoned mall where the theater was burned down cause of arsonists. This mall is a 90's time capsule that's for sure. Great video.
Thank you guys for exploring the mall of my childhood. This video brought back a flood of good memories of going to the movies with my mom. Very saddened to see its current state, but happy I got to spend time at this mall when it was open.

Rolling Acres mall was approximately 45 minutes away and I was razed last year. There are two more malls in the area that are on the brink of closing and will likely close within 2 years. There are only 2 malls in the area that are healthy.
@@classrockin I was only ever at Randall Park a few times. Growing up we went to Rolling Acres if we didn't have anything to do on the weekend evenings. I lived SW of Akron and went to Akron U in the 1980s. Mellet mall and Chapel Hill will soon be on Art Bells list of dying malls to explore. The last time I was in Rolling Acres was at the going out of business sale at JCP Outlet. I walked the entire mall but I didn't think to record it. It was eerily empty.
I worked at that Mervyn's back in 1999. I had heard it closed long ago, but it's still such a shock to see the East Hills Mall like this. The movie theater is unbelievable! I remember watching Scream there!
On the Mervyn's end was Payless Shoes, All American Sports Fan, Lane Bryant, Walden Books. Where the movie theater was (it was a United Artist theater at the very beginning) there was the food court where you guys found the photo stand. I swear it had a taco bell in it. The food storefront across from the Ben and Jerry's was a Sbarro. Next to it was Hot Dog on a stick. The Miller's Outpost was on the same "wall" as the two food places, and even cut thru to the food court area. It then became an Anchor Blue. The center anchor store was a Harris. In that same area there was a Wet Seal, CouchHouse Gifts, Footlocker, and a Rave. At the east end of the mall was the Gottschalks (anchor store), a Sam Goody. I think the ultimate downfall began when Gottschalks bought out Harris. You then had two anchor stores that offered the exact same things, sales, etc. Pretty sure that was around 98/99.
The store that you guys weren't sure of was originally a Miller's Outpost when the mall first opened. I don't remember what it became after that though. And before The Picture People it was Glamour Shots and before than Olin Mills Photography. So sad to see it the way it is now. So many memories especially from my teenage years there!
This is freaking awesome guys! I remember the grand opening of that mall and also some of the last days of it. I hung out there all during my teenage days. Good times.
Alyssa Hunt there was never a Yankee Candle store in this mall to my knowledge. I grew up less than a mile from here. The anchors were Mervyns, Harris, and Gottschalks.
At 4:50 that was originally the Track and Trail. They sold Newbalance, Birkenstocks, Teva sandals, hiking boots... shoe store for active people. I worked in that very store in 1992 for about a month of the summer between my junior and senior year.
Just because of the theater of the mall with you and your wife it is so sad that vandals have to go through and destroy such nice property awesome job look forward to next video
My daughter is 13 and we are wetting our feet in this a little not quite as risky as u guys I definitely dont want to get her in trouble her channel name is CARMEN EXPLORES
The store at the 5 minute mark was originally a Track 'N Trail shoe store. I worked at that exact store a couple of years after this mall originally opened. I was maybe 19-20. I'm 49 now....:)
Hahaha...you scared the s@#t out of those three boys lol That said: another DOPE explore with my favourite urbexes! I love abandoned malls! They are so fascinating to me because Australia doesn't have a lot of huge malls (we call 'em 'shopping centres') let alone abandoned ones. Thanks guys! xx
Hi friend! The store that you thought was familiar at 4:59 is my grandmas coffee shop “Cordially Yours Gourmet Coffee and Tea Shoppe” thank you so much for shedding light on a cherished part of my childhood!
I spent a lot of my childhood in this mall. My family shopped here all the time and the movie theater was my favorite. I walked around with my friends all day after school. It was the best. RIP East Hills Mall, Bakersfield
Never in this mall, the wooden front store was a shoe store (hiking boots mostly) EDIT: it was called Track n' Trail Shoes, it was across from high voltage arcade (that was originally a Miller's Outpost/Anchor Blue)
Daniel Cardenas to my recollection it was originally Bigfoot Mountaineering, it might have been an Anchor Blue. But Miller's Outpost (that would become Anchor Blue) was right across the way with the red pipe trim.
Went to visit my friend who lived close by that mall in the late 90s....never got to go inside....now both are gone....thanks for the memories RnK and to Bobby too
Atlas Complex I agree lol, this is why tinder is so big for these lames. Back then everyone went to the mall to meet girls/guys go on dates whatever now everything is done on the dating apps 😂😭.
So the brown building @ 5:00 used to be sylvan learning center but before that it was an instrument store. I have a lot of fond memories at east hills mall.
Do you remember Mall Madness from the 80's ? Well now you can play Mall Sadness, the new reality based game for the 21st century. Spin the dial, lose an anchor, roll the dice to determine how many of the smaller stores will flee. Draw a card, will there be a renovation or a demolition ? Opps, you've drawn a random E. Coli outbreak in the food court. Draw again. All jokes aside, I can't believe this place hasn't been torn down yet, it wasn't even that poppin it its hey days (my friend used to work at Mervyn's). Thanks RnK & Bobby, I'll be sharing the link to this one too 👍
I was a projectionist for 5 months back in 02. Christie film projectors are awesome and it really is amazing to see them fully functional. It's sad to see them gutted. The Scope and flat lenses are also gone.
The store you were asking about was a Harris Gottschalks....mervyns at the other end of the mall...this was always a small mall but some big names were there. Footlocker...Payless..KB toy store....so many more.
There used to be Meryvns, Harris, Gottschalks, Millers Outpost, food court, sunglasses hut, KBee toys, payless shoes, popcorn gourmet store, and mocie theater. Once gottchalks, and Harris shut down it killed that mall. One by one each store closed and off brand stores popped up. Finally it all shut down. Squatters and vandals mostly go there. They recently had a fire at meryvns.
I still have memories of getting rainbow popcorn in there as a child. And the smoking sections in the middle of the mall under the skylights (before it was outlawed).
i helped open the Gottschalks at East Hills Mall (Later it became Sarah)and worked there for four years until I went on maternity leave. Daniel Jewelers is where my husband and I got our wedding rings.(Thanks Betty!). It is so sad to see it vandalized now. Lots of good memories working there.
@@craigbrowning9448 no, the mall had some of the major stores gone by then but the movie theater was still open and there was a bunch of small stores still open
G'day Kristy and Robb, I really enjoyed this video especially the Movie Theatres & projectors. Sad that people seem to get a kick out of being so destructive.
I'll never understand why people vandalize. There's absolutely no excuse for it. If someone has that much energy, they should be out doing something good. I've seen some amazing graffiti. Why? They could be making good money with their talent instead of breaking the law. I just don't get it.
I remember when I was a kid walking through this mall when it was still being built. Seen many movies in that theater and in its early days the theater entrance was on the outside. Copeland sports, Footlocker, Wet Seal, Sam Goodies, Payless Shoes, Ka Bee toys, Merlo's Cutlery, Vans, Millers Outpost (Anchor Blue), Popcorn Parlor just to name a few along with Mervyns, Harris and Gottchalks anchoring the mall down. I'd say its demise truly began around 06-07 during the economic crisis. Once the anchor stores went the rest followed slowly but surely. So many memories and all of them good ones..
That mall gotta be closed down for a while after seeing that Mervyn's sign still hanging. Was that the only anchor store they had there? Pretty cool looking mall.
Musicman The FAM It's closed in 2016, but it doesn't look like they had any anchors in a long time. The last ones were Mervyn's and Harris Gottschalks.
I live 2 minutes away from this mall. I remember it was always dead and the only reason to go there was the movie theater. This is now a practice area for the swat team.
I was thinking about those beautiful projectors and why they were just left and not sold. It came to me. Most movie theatres are no longer running film. They have moved to DLP systems.
You answered your own question as those are the old 35mm projectors and now everything is digital. Its a shame to see them in their current condition though as those things were expensive when purchased new. With all the vandalism they have received they are nothing but scrap metal now.
Hahaha...I remember the old projectors from the Tejon theater back in the 60s. The projectionist was a cool guy who used to let me and my 2 brothers inside once in a while to watch him working them...Now those were something to see...big old black iron machines with a gas light that was almost like an arc from an arc welder when he opened the little window to them..I can remember so many times while watching a movie that it would start blistering on the screen and the movie would stop..The film had paused for whatever reason and the flame burned through it...Ahhh the memories.
You know it's really sad to see abandoned places and they just leave it there four Vandals to destroy that's sad but interesting at the same time thanks for another awesome video 👍
wow. feels like entering the dimension of the late 90s and early 2000s. It's hard to describe the atmosphere ... it feels like going back to childhood, the high school days where we went out for a walk with friends, our parents were young, the days when monitors were the size of a TV and everyone wore Nokia, the days where we just know "happy" wow ... hard to describe .. if I was there, I don't care even if the mall is quiet, I will sit and enjoy the quiet atmosphere while remembering the memories that I really like.
@@chrismartinez5711 that would be correct. The other entrance/exit took you to the foodcourt. I belive they took it out in the 90's when they expanded the theater.
My best friend Ryan Stone worked at Gamestop in that mall.... sadly he is no longer with us. When you went by that store it brought back great memories but it also made me sad.
The wooden store was a Millers Outpost. All brand name stores left this mall about twenty years ago. Random family owned and small businesses where sporactly utilized in this mall none of which lasting very long. Theatre was used as dollar theatre after original mall closed. Mall and theatre was closed and bought about 3 years ago by a private company proclainimg plans of renovating into high-end shopping experience and new theatre. As you can see now just left to rot. So sad I remember when this was a nice mall in early nineties.

I worked at that Mervyn's back in 1999. I had heard it closed long ago, but it's still such a shock to see the East Hills Mall like this. The movie theater is unbelievable! I remember watching Scream there!
Yas! No ones done a mall in a little while. Missed em! Thank u for the great content!
They had a Carl's Jr or Arby's in the 90's and a cookie place.
No Taco Bell. The Carl's Jr and hot dog on a stick
I see Christmas Wreath hung sad that they close down at Christmas time. Thanks for ride RNK All Day and Bobby 👍🏽
I cannot resist another RNK video. They are always the best!
Horton Plaza in Downtown San Diego is an abandoned bladerunner mall.(you can still go there!)
The store that you guys weren't sure of was originally a Miller's Outpost when the mall first opened. I don't remember what it became after that though. And before The Picture People it was Glamour Shots and before than Olin Mills Photography. So sad to see it the way it is now. So many memories especially from my teenage years there!
I think after Miller's outpost it turned into Anchor Blue
East Hills in Bako? This makes me so sad!
Yup. Well, whats left of it.
That was the place to be in '89!
Get yourself back to school
strawberrybunnie yes
Mervyns still there wow Amazing
Mattzilla Gamer just the name the store was gone ALONG TIME AGO
It got in a huge fire like a month back. That's probably why they are smelling the fire
Ty. This is cool. Sadly, so much destruction. Looking forward to our next adventure together ✌
This is freaking awesome guys! I remember the grand opening of that mall and also some of the last days of it. I hung out there all during my teenage days. Good times.
5:04 was a Yankee Candle. I used to work at one
Alyssa Hunt there was never a Yankee Candle store in this mall to my knowledge. I grew up less than a mile from here. The anchors were Mervyns, Harris, and Gottschalks.
Alyssa Hunt I believe it was originally a John T’s, but then they went to the plaza.
Erin James with the help of others, it was a Track n Trail shoes.
Kat Tastrophe Ohh, I just remember a John T’s their but you’re probably right.
Erin James John T's was in that mall but it was in the Gottschalks wing. The wood fascade they are talking about is closer to center court.
I’m sure someone already said, but it is Miller’s Outpost right before the 5 minute mark. And yea there was a KB Toys.
Awesome video.. It's a shame though that people have to go in and vandalize places.. Love you guys, keep'em comin'...
At 4:50 that was originally the Track and Trail. They sold Newbalance, Birkenstocks, Teva sandals, hiking boots... shoe store for active people. I worked in that very store in 1992 for about a month of the summer between my junior and senior year.
I hit the like always love your video's
Another awesome explore! Thanks for taking us with you.
Northgate Mall in Lafayette, Louisiana is still hanging on by a thread.
Lived inEast Bakersfield my whole life. Spent many days at easthills mall. The store at 5:05 I believe was millers outpost
The store at the 5 minute mark was originally a Track 'N Trail shoe store. I worked at that exact store a couple of years after this mall originally opened. I was maybe 19-20. I'm 49 now....:)
I worked next door to the Track and Trail at Software Etc while in high school (Highland) in the late 80s
I totally remember Track N Trail, what a cool name. I would have been about 10 when you worked there. My mom would always take me there for shoes.
tadchristopher hey can I ask you a question
EAAAAAST HILLLLLLS
WERE BACK TO SCHOOOOOOOL
COME GET YOURSELF AN OUTFIT
Hahaha...you scared the s@#t out of those three boys lol That said: another DOPE explore with my favourite urbexes! I love abandoned malls! They are so fascinating to me because Australia doesn't have a lot of huge malls (we call 'em 'shopping centres') let alone abandoned ones. Thanks guys! xx
You guys have great videos, rad channel!
Awesome explor blast from the past seeing k.b toy store guy love you and Kristy thankyou once again. 💋💋💜💜✌
Hi friend! The store that you thought was familiar at 4:59 is my grandmas coffee shop “Cordially Yours Gourmet Coffee and Tea Shoppe” thank you so much for shedding light on a cherished part of my childhood!
Love thd expoly round the old theatre looks good nice to see a another person. Stay cool
I spent a lot of my childhood in this mall. My family shopped here all the time and the movie theater was my favorite. I walked around with my friends all day after school. It was the best. RIP East Hills Mall, Bakersfield
Hey guys! The store with the wooden frame you asked about was a Gloria Jeans Coffee
Never in this mall, the wooden front store was a shoe store (hiking boots mostly) EDIT: it was called Track n' Trail Shoes, it was across from high voltage arcade (that was originally a Miller's Outpost/Anchor Blue)
@@kattastrophe8454 I want to say the wood facade was Miller's/Anchor Blue The holes look ABOUT right for Anchor Blue.
There was a Miller's Outpost that became an Anchor Blue store. There also used to be another store with a wooden front that was a Track & Trail
Daniel Cardenas to my recollection it was originally Bigfoot Mountaineering, it might have been an Anchor Blue. But Miller's Outpost (that would become Anchor Blue) was right across the way with the red pipe trim.
Kat Tastrophe Track and Trail was the name of the store with the wood front
Went to visit my friend who lived close by that mall in the late 90s....never got to go inside....now both are gone....thanks for the memories RnK and to Bobby too
Who needs a mall when there's internet no one interact with people any more
That's certainly a problem lol we need to start meeting at libraries again
@@AtlasCompleXtheProd ....yep, got that right
Maybe to shop ?💀 malls with stores inside so we can shop not interact with people
Atlas Complex I agree lol, this is why tinder is so big for these lames. Back then everyone went to the mall to meet girls/guys go on dates whatever now everything is done on the dating apps 😂😭.
Another amazing video. Been a fan since 2017. 💖
Lol omg Bakersfield can never be on the media for something good 😂 so many memories tho that was the spot ❤️😒😒
At 4:50, I remember when I was a kid that used to be a Miller’s Outpost which later became an Anchor Blue.
I watched the first Jurassic Park at this theater. The line was wrapped around to the front side of the mall. Very sad.
JK Flip Amazing can I ask you a question
I missed seeing the abandoned mall videos✌🏻.. thanks for the great video. Keep the awesome videos coming 👍🏻
Laura Fort we have a few abandoned malls on our channel. If you’re interested check it out :)
Cool video. Mervyn's - WOW. They've been closed since 2009.
By the way, noticed the Palestinian flag, at the beginning ..:09.
you knocked another explore out of the ballpark! Good one!
Sunglasses and more was owned by an awesome older couple and was there until the very end. They were the best.
I worked in that same store when it was a sunglass hut....I htink I told one pair of sunglasses a week every 5 days of working at night part time.
i helped open the Gottschalks at East Hills Mall (Later it became Sarah)and worked there for four years until I went on maternity leave. Daniel Jewelers is where my husband and I got our wedding rings.(Thanks Betty!). It is so sad to see it vandalized now. Lots of good memories working there.
Saw a guy get stabbed in that mall when I was 16
I got shot in the movie theatre
Was the Mall abandoned?
(At the time the guy got stabbed)
@@craigbrowning9448 yes... did you not watch the video? Its obviously abandoned it's in the title
@@aprilreel2215 did you really? I'd like to hear the story if you wouldn't mind
@@craigbrowning9448 no, the mall had some of the major stores gone by then but the movie theater was still open and there was a bunch of small stores still open
the suspect part was soooo cool guys! loved it...im a BIG BIG fan from northern ontario canada....keep up the good work guys!
Same
G'day Kristy and Robb, I really enjoyed this video especially the Movie Theatres & projectors. Sad that people seem to get a kick out of being so destructive.
Cool video and tour. Thanks guys
The store with the wood was Millers outpost then later Anchor Blue.
Naomi Zavaleta No that was on the other end... this wood one was the dance studio
I really like the fact that you don't disturb what you explore.
That mall is trashed, it is still cool to see it, looking forward to the next video.
When I was 3 my mom brought me to mervyns with my brother. I stood up on the cart for like kids and I fell with it and I busted my lip. Lmao
InfinityAquatics hahaha, hope you were okay, but my mom always brought me to mervyns when I was around 4-5
Love the videos. So chill and no nonsense. RNK the music is loud but I can't hear you!
@@MaxZomboni Oh cool! Thanks for the info!
It was Mervyn's, Gottschalks, and the movie theater keeping it together. When the theater changed, the whole mall changed with it.
@@artemislunanettybecker8641 That's a shame! Another mall closed down.
It was 2017. I lost my job at the movie theater because of it
I live 2 minutes away from this mall.
Love the way you film great video
The store with the wood front was call Track and Trail shoes
I think it used to be Billabong or something like that.
I thought it was Hallmark originally.
@@LGbM3 I believe you are right. It was a Hallmark Store.
Amazing location Robb! Keep up the good work! Love watching your stuff. Big fan
Great explore! Just think how much that projection equipment cost when it was new.
Awesome, I been waiting awhile for y'all to a vid like this, Huge Like
Can’t wait this looks good
New to the channel, love the video
The one store w/the wood entrance looks like it was a Yankee Candle store.... One of my personal favs!
I like Yankee candles to
Great job guys. You are always mixing up your explorations. Thanks Bobby.
The store that looks familiar to you was called “Millers Outpost”.
Actually, Miller's Outpost (or Anchor Blue as it was later called) was on the other side. It had the two red window displays on the sides.
@@tekjargon9887 I believe Miller's Outpost had two entrances, and I remember taking shortcuts through it.
@@chrismartinez5711 that would be correct. The other entrance/exit took you to the foodcourt. I belive they took it out in the 90's when they expanded the theater.
Haven't even heard Miller's Outpost word's in 20 years, lol.
Miller's Outpost was directly behind him, that was the Track and Trail.
Where is this ?
Anchor blue. But same thing. It's only been like 10 years. Gottchalks and Mervyns went down in 2009.
