    Most officers don't really know that there are a lot of people who enjoy just going into and seeing these places, so when they see a car parked out front of an abandoned building they have no idea what could be going on inside, hence the over-cautious response. Excellent video though, at least you know next time not to park in such an obvious spot :)

      @ThisisDanBell  9 ปีที่แล้ว +287

      The Proper People Actually, I picked the perfect spot to park. It gave me the climactic ending I wanted. I’m just glad they didn’t turn up 30 minutes earlier.

      This is Dan Bell. True, but still 99% of the time its a situation you want to avoid. Urban explorers getting arrested or given a court appearance date for trespassing is not that uncommon, I know an explorer who has done jail time for checking out a more mundane location than this.

    • @ThisisDanBell
      @ThisisDanBell  9 ปีที่แล้ว +240

      The Proper People It’s definitely not something I’d do again. It was more of a safety decision as this area of Akron is pretty sketchy and I was alone carrying a ton of expensive gear. If I had to get out of there quickly, my car would be right there. In the video it appears like a naive decision but it wasn't. Everything I do is thoroughly planned beforehand. I wouldn’t drive 6 hours unless I was sure I could get a good video without being robbed or murdered or preferably both.

      Not to mention all the toxic black mold spores and asbestos and shit which would be in the air. Abandoned confined spaces can also lead to some pretty fucking bad gas build ups. CO, NO2 and the very dangerous one in abandoned places H2S. When you do OH&S studies, you learn of a surprising amount of deaths of people who just walk into say a room then pass out and die because that room was filled with decomposing material which created a toxic atmosphere.

      He could have escaped initial detection, and playing hide-and-go seek with a band of armed officers might not be a good idea, but it could be fun (until he got caught or shot.)
      The broken glass all over the floor, crunch crunch crunch eliminates the possibility of stealth escape, unless he takes his shoes off and walks in socks. Maybe he could sneak outside then - but the other police and police cars are stationed around his car, and got his license plate, etc. He's made either way...

    I grew up going to this mall, and was able to identify virtually every shop you went in. The saddest thing I saw was the fountain. I loved that fountain. It made the most amazing sound and the sunlight would glint of the mirrored pipes and all the pennies people threw into even though it wasn't a wishing well.
    Here's a little story. The store at around the 13:00 mark, Excalibur, dealt in knickknacks and replica medieval weapons, none of which ever seemed to sell. I found out how they managed to stay in business one day when I was about 12. A teenage guy almost bit my head off because I was to close to the counter and could see that the shop was sell him drugs from underneath the counter.

      Akron was originally the center of American rubber manufacturing for stuff like automobile tires and other products. By the end of the 1990's it was in serious decline and by the end of the 00's the industrial worker base had declined by half. Like many midwestern rust belt cities, the main industry that used to fuel it's prosperity started to come crashing down and...so did the city. This story has been repeated a whole bunch of times across this country.

    My very first job when I came home from the Army was as a security officer at Rolling Acres. It was kind of embarrassing to put on a "rent-a-cop" uniform, especially since we had always jokingly referred to the mall security as "Mounties", since the hat made them look like Canadian Mounted Police more so than making you look like a State Trooper or Drill Sargent. I really appreciate this video my friend!!! I had completely forgotten some of the memories and feelings. Your footage is PERFECT!!

Not just the house I came of age in, but the entire 200+ area housing area. The nearby retail areas, and an entire town, had died over the ensuing years, including all three business that housed my first three jobs.

      It's as if it was abandoned for 10-15+ years and never demolished, it would have been exposed to the elements for much longer, and would have been in worse shape than in this video..
      In the series, cats and other animals like foxes, dogs, coyotes, and maybe even wolves have overtaken the mall.

    The saddest part is the very end, watching Rolling Acres fade away getting smaller and smaller...all the while realizing that none of it is there anymore, the bustling crowd of people that once frequented the great mall, the gorgeous fountain that almost survived the demolition but didn't make it...the anchor stores that hung on like champs until the very end, the parking lot filled with cars that brought you to a place where you could see, feel and touch things and people that were part of a better America. Look at those huge pieces of granite on the floor, if people only knew not only how expensive that stuff was to purchase, but the labor to have it installed was extremely expensive also. I worked on the Arden fair mall in Sacramento in like 1990 or 91 I can't remember right now, but it was 200,000 sq. ft. of granite and 50,000 sq. ft. of mosaic tile in the food court. I'm telly you there was ungodly amounts of money put into these places. I used to go hang out at the mall in my teens and even in my 20s and 30s. I remember when the brick cellphones came out. I had one and I thought I was so cool with that huge thing hanging from my belt loop. Oh my gosh, I never thought I'd see theses places just looking like scenes from the walking dead. frank mathis I am a granite salesman, fabricator and installer. The expensive, or rather most expensive part of getting granite is fabrication, the logistics are also a nightmare because of the weight. The most unfortunate part of granite or marble installed and left is it actually costs more to remove and reinstall it in almost all cases than it costs to buy new stone and have it installed. Unless it truly is a very rare type or has historical value. I only have torn out stone to be reused a handful of times, only two of those times was it really because of the value of the stone. In was Pink Marble from the state capital bathroom (yes someone wanted the stone peed on by two presidents) and the other a rare Italian marble from a staircase of a mansion near Nashville, TN.

    • @stardude289

      MusicianAdam The reason why so many officers showed up is because it's building with many rooms. One single cop can be so easily ambushed that it's terrifying the thought of going in there alone. So depending on the size of the building, it's layout and how many rooms it has, they send additional officers for backup.
      Now of course from our point of view ot was excessive because we are seeing it from the TH-camr's point of view. But for the cops? They don't know if the person that just broke in armed or not, or how many of them are there.

    I get mix emotions watching this. I use to beg my mother to go to rolling acres mall all the time. But we always ended up at chapel hill mall. I went a few times to this mall though.

    I finally went there yesterday August 15, 2017. Most of the interior space has been demolished now, but I was able to walk into the lobby of the old theater and walk up the escalator with the thin wire chandelier that you can see in this video. It is still possible to drive the exterior of this mall as most of the façade is still up, and get a good idea of what Dan approached 2 years ago. I stood just down from the JC Penny for instance, right in front of the Rolling Acres sign where he spoke to the couple at the beginning of the video, and it's very creepy to see the smashed in windows and graffiti, and the general complete disrepair with the parking lot. You really feel like this is something out of a zombie apocalypse film. Last note, it was difficult to locate the place where Dan entered the mall as the area has now been torn down, but it was through a section just past the entrance to the movie theater on the back side of the mall. You can still see the angle of the road and work out where the building was, which is now just open space.

    So a small police force descended to the mall because of the lone intruder! LOL that's awesome - I could hear your voice shaking. I'm glad it all went okay for you.

      Rei Ev they didn't know it was a 'lone intruder'. For all they know it could've been a bunch of teenagers trying to break shit or whatever or criminal activities like drugs or even murder. Hey in that part of town, you never know.

      They probably sent a large number of officers because a mall is a big place to search for only one or two. And obviously they take things seriously since there have been incidents at this particular mall before. The news reports you heard are only two incidents; I'll bet there are a lot more, less 'newsworthy' incidents on record.

      They also patrol it all of the time because they have to. They didn't want it to turn in to a Detroit-like body-dumping site and clearly, it was heading in that direction. And it was already known to be frequented by druggies and/or thugs and/or homeless people. Lot of guns fired in there, as you saw... It's a mostly vacant stretch of giant, abandoned box stores that all went out of business at once. There is a whole mile of these buildings, at least, bordering a bad part of Akron. It seems like it's getting a bit better, but slowly. I thought I'd be sad to see the mall go, but not anymore. That domino has to fall before my old hometown can really begin to recover, I think. Better vacant land than decaying dereliction.

    Rolling Acres? Shit, I used to drive past that place all the time and didn't notice the mall was demolished.
    Also the nearby Long John Silvers has all-you-can-eat on Sundays if you're ever hungry and drunk.
