I guess Hyppolyta forgot to tell Diana that Zeus overthrew his father, Cronos, and Cronos overthrew his father before that. Ares was just carrying on a family tradition.

That, and he wasn't really "Darkseid" yet. The old gods at the time of the first battle were very strong, as they drew their power from the worship of men. The civil war of the gods also hadn't happened yet. Darkseid waited until the old gods were weakened from the civil war, murdered them, and usurped all of their power. Uxas became Darkseid and obtained the Omega Effect, which is where his Omega Beams originate.
Yeah darkseid is still injured when you see his shoulder, Ares left a mark.

The thing is in real Greek mythology, Ares had a cowardly mentality. The moment he was injured, he would often run back to the safety of Olympus to heal his wounds, abandoning his allies in battle.

Ironic how DC usually depicts Ares as an antagonist to the Amazons. In the actual mythology, it was Ares who fathered the Amazons and they even worshiped him as one of their patron deities.

I know its a comic book movie but Ares killing all the Olympians is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. Its hard to buy it when you know that in the original Greek mythology Ares might be the god of war but he gets he ass casually handed to him by Athena or Apollo or someone else....let alone Zeus, who was said to be stronger than all the other gods combined.

Zeus is the most powerful yes but in this movie ares turned to other means off destroying his foes as he’s still recovering, as if he was at his full potential he’d be able to complete obliterate Wonder Woman and like said exact revenge upon Zeus, which my end good or bad for him.

It's possible that in this canon Ares was stronger than all the other gods save for Zeus himself - and maybe even him.
I mean if you go to original Greek mythology, it's always one generation of deities being stronger than the previous one, the son dethrones the father. Uranus was dethroned and castrated by Chronus, and to prevent the same fate, Chronus ate his own children. Then baby Zeus was saved by his mother and grandmother, made his father Chronus regurgitate his sibilings and dethroned his father (along with four uncles and several cousins.)
When Zeus first wife, the titaness Metis was pregnant with Athena, there came a prophecy that Athena would be wiser than Zeus, and after her, Metis would have a boy; Athena's brother would be stronger and more powerful than his father. So Zeus ate Metis pregnant and all and took Hera as his wife. Ares was the first born and is always considered the physically strongest of Zeus's children - though not the wisest or most skilled, since he often lost to Athena in strategy and to Apollo in sparring.
The people behind DCEU may have conceived Ares to be stronger than even his uncles.

My only problem with the story: Ares never bested Athena. He couldn't. Every time the two confronted, Athena came out victorious.
Still, love the visuals.
In Greek mythology, Ares is usually portrayed poorly because of what he represented as a god of war (Greek mythology is symbolically interpreted). However, what Ares represents is more complex than that, which is exemplified by the Roman Pantheon that rather favoured Mars (the adopted version of Ares) and represented him as a military power to secure peace. Although in Homer's myths, he is mostly presented as the violent and chaotic side of the war, some Greek states as the Lacedaemons (Spartans) held him in high esteem and also favoured him.
Regarding the relationship between Ares and Athena then mythologically is complicated, however as presented in Homer's "Iliad" Athena doesn't risk hand to hand combat with Ares, instead helped Diomedes defeat Ares by using Hades helmet of Invisibility and setting Ares's spear off course. Therefore when did she defeat him in hand to hand combat?
The main problem with this story is not that Ares defeated Athena, most certainly, you are correct Athena could flee or find a way to defeat Ares and that doesn't particularly must be by combat, although there is always an element of surprise, which could catch Athena off-guard.
This is just a DC comics story, therefore they don't need to hold to orthodox or traditional Greek Myths. Personally, I don't mind they buffed Ares, he is way underrated in Greek Mythology for what he should be as Physical Form of God Of War. Although I think Wonder Woman killed him so Its a RIP.
The movie never says that Ares killed *ALL* the gods. It never even implies that.

After seeing what Ares did to Darkseid in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it made me realise while he was evil, he was also a badass!
So Ares Wonder Woman fought was a lot weaker then what he once was? You know, since he was able apparently to clear all Olympus by himself and even fatally wound Zeus beforehand, and after he received his wound he was so weak he couldn't even kill humans by himself and is forced to hide himself and use desception and lies as his weapons? Fascinating. Imagine how powerful Ares must've been before Zeus wounded him. I bet he would crush Wonder Woman with a single strike.

No that's no true if you have watched the film ares wanted Diana to join so he was using medium or moderate power on in the final battle with Diana henceforth "join me or die " he wanted Diana to kill the humans so he was fighting her just enough for her to say yes but he underestimated Diana's power heck Diana underestimated her self ,ares and her power she thought the way she killed Ludendorff she could kill ares but her power was unlocked in the final so she did a surprise move on. Maybe he could crush Wonder Woman with a single strike, but remember that Diana is not part human, part god; she is part Amazon, part god. She is a demi-god because she carries the genes of the gods and her mother, Hippolyta, an Amazon. The Amazons were created after Man to pacify them. They are, in a sense, a superior creation, physically, mentally, emotionally, and, potentially, in capacity for love, wisdom, and empathy. So Diana is a demi-god because she is part god and part Amazon (better version of man). If Ares had been weakened by Zeus and foiled by his own self-confidence, Diana could have an advantage over him. To me, this makes sense. It is a matter of deductive reasoning.

This kinda explains how Ares could've beaten Uxas. There was a war going on and he gets strength from that so it makes sense if, strategy-wise that Ares would deliver the finishing blow.

Why are people's panties in a twist about Ares ? This is DC, their version of Greek mythology. Same with Marvel, they completely turned Thor and the Norse mythology on its head with things like the whole "worthy" thing, cause in actual Norse mythology, there is no worthy thing. It's amazing how people can't see this point.

I'm upset about this because I wanted a series of Wonder Woman movies where she interacted with the Greek gods.
But it contradict both the mythology and the comic. In the comic Zeus can solo the whole Olympus and can casually kill superman. And Ares is not even that strong compare to the other god. He is like the runt of the family alway getting beat up by Athena, Wonder Woman, Superman, etc.
Of all the things to complain about this movie, this ain't it chief. Dumbfucks love to be outraged. A simple Google search would reveal that there is in fact a DC character Ares, whom this is based on.

They turned the Norse gods into aliens with sci-fi tech, when in the comics they were actual gods with supernatural powers and Asgard looked like a medieval Norse society. They also turned Mjölnir into an Excalibur-like weapon that only the "worthy" can wield when in the mythology, the hammer could be used by anyone. If anything, the MCU deviated from its source material even more than the DCEU did.

In the Iliad (V), Athena (through Diomedes), defeats and wounds Ares, who goes crying and whining back to Zeus, reprimanding him for his favoritism to Athena. Showing his disgust at Ares brutal ways, he basically tells him if he wasn't his own son he would have been thrown out of Olympus:
"Then with an angry glance from beneath his brows spake to him Zeus, the cloud-gatherer: “Sit thou not in any wise by me and whine, thou renegade. [890] Most hateful to me art thou of all gods that hold Olympus, for ever is strife dear to thee and wars and fightings.
