As a fan of Cannibal The Musical and film/video restoration in general... This... Is the saddest yet hopeful bluray promo I have ever seen... Dog nabbit, I got tears in my eyes by the end! 😅 Let's hold on to hope that someone somewhere has the whole pile of cans sitting in cold storage, just waiting to be unearthed like the Brazilian 16mm copy of the original cut of Fritz Lang's Metropolis that surfaced out of nowhere a while back.
Just brilliant Oscar!! This is great news, now I can finally replace my _Troma'_ DVD copy. Can we also get _'If I Could Just Wind Though'_ on Spotify please... Love it 😂😂
Well I already pre ordered the Refuse edition from Grindhouse but you guys putting out this awesome video has won a preorder from me as well. Doesn’t hurt that cannibal is one of my fav movies ever and seeing the support from both teams makes me so happy. Very sad we lost the film elements though 😢 💔
Takes me back to my teen years in the 90’s. Troma was releasing so many films on vhs and I would go and buy as many as I could find. Usually from media play.
It is very sad you can't find the 16mm negative, but at least you guys tried, and created us the next best thing. That's actually the best we can hope for from a company like you guys. At least you tried to get all this stuff for us. Nobody else did besides you all.
Hi Oscar! Thank you so much for this informative video and thank you so much as well for responding to my comment in the last Winding Through episode! I am passionate about the art of film preservation and restoration and even if it's a very niche and nerdy subject I still would love it. I literally have like a ton of questions I would like to ask you about your knowledge as an archivist but maybe someday! I'm from the Philippines and unfortunately it is such a sad tale of film preservation. Only a very small fraction of Filipino films from the 80s and below survive in film and the older you go the rarer the chance of surviving film elements! Any film element like prints and negatives were mostly junked and trashed from existence once they had their theatrical run, or were poorly preserved and even had their materials reused for factory products due to their silver content. Most of the time we have to deal with U-Matic or Betamax copies of like 80% of old Filipino films since that's the only way they survive, and if we're talking about film elements, it's mostly just positive release prints that are scratchy and decaying and negatives are extremely rarely preserved and hard to come by. I hope one day I would bring justice and do the same thing you would do but with my country's films! Thank you for doing what you do and I can't wait to see more of you and what VS has to offer soon!
I am speechless…so I write! The Oscar goes to……..OSCAR! A new timeless classic is born! We (at least I) kneel in awe and crawl in the dust in comparison! Who could ever know that film preservation could be so dramatically charged? So dynamic in nature! An ete opener for sure! The singing and tap dancing parts relentlesly mangled out any wish in me to even try. It would be pointless after this. 100 skulls out of 1! 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀…lost count… Cheers!
So you guys are literally finding the best copies on tape and then making a final version on disc? That's pretty neat. I had no idea. I know the original negative is obviously best, but doing this as the next best thing is interesting.
This is amazing! 👨🍳💋 Great job Oscar and DS/VS team. Had a singalong with you and just preordered my copy. Can’t wait to see it! Wishing you all a shpadoinkle day! 🤠
5:08 "Picture will be 'eh'" Appreciate the honesty. May The Spedoinkle Be With You. Always. You know someone is going to find the negative after you sell out, right?
Curious about a format I know nothing about, I found this: Video The Digital Betacam format records 2.34:1 DCT-compressed digital component video signal at 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 sampling in NTSC (486i) or PAL (576i) resolutions at a bitrate of 90 Mbit/s. Audio Digital Betacam offers four channels of uncompressed 48 kHz/20-bit PCM digital audio. A fifth analog audio track is also available for cueing, and a linear timecode track is also used on the tape. I can't even imagine what a 35mm blowup would look like.
You know.. I am surprised you did not include a CD with all of the music. Is there at least a sing-a-long with a bouncing head? A "carrioke" so we can sing the songs instead of Matt and Trey?
Inaccurate description of how most movies from the late 80s to the early 2000s were edited. Not going into super low budget home made movies like this one, the "shot on film/edited on video" method was really only ever used for TV shows at the time, though a few like Quantum Leap and Friends were shot and finished on film still. Movies shot on film in this period were still edited on film for the most part, the whole reason being to make 35mm printing for the theatrical release a lot easier. Exceptions were obviously porn movies which were either put together this way or downright shot on video for cost.
This video should be on the Blu-ray too. It's a masterpiece.
I hope it makes the special features on the disc release of this movie.
@@TheWisestWizards It's nothing short of shpadoinkle!
Same!
Agreed.
The final song from this video actually sold me on the purchase of the Blu-ray. Thanks for caring.
The passion, the drama, the heartbreak AND the music! The best thing you will see this year!

This actually made me cry at the end lol. Beautiful work 👏
This is why I support this company so much. This video.
So sharp. So clear. Beautiful. 😢

I was never going to buy cannibal, but now Im starting to doubt myself, this video is why you're the best in the business guys
This is the best, thank you so much for making these.
Here I am, 12:30 at night crying for the original elements of Cannibal the Musical…RIP

I’ll finally be able to retire my Cannibal DVD.
Wait, I changed my mind ... this is a sweet movie!
''..I wish that negaaaaatiiiiiive was here''
There goes my brain for the next week. Thanks!

Going to be honest here - this video got me to preorder it.
Leave it to the preservationists at VS to always go the extra mile
Very exciting release.
I feel Oscar’s pain. I’ve long wondered why film elements for film-to-tape edits often get tossed, and Oscar explains it well.
Oscar you're hilarious 😂 thank you for everything you do 🤘 it should be part of the disc special features 😅
Oscar I loved this!
This promo is great! I hope you put it on the discs! I ordered mine today!
Bravo!
love you guys
For the fifteen still living fans of cannibal the musical, I bet they enjoyed this a lot.
We did
@@alexziegler465 Hear, hear!
Never seen it, but I loved this.
@@albundy7794 A must-see.
This was the greatest fucking video ever!!! I am so happy I got the film from yall!!
u look like a guy I saw @ a Giraffes Giraffes show in Detroit 2023 @ the Sanctuary...I complimented u on the Vinegar Syndrome hoodie
"Wind Through You" belongs on this year's Oscar Ballot for Best Original Song.
Also, where do I get that fucking shirt!?!?
VS Is like Willy Wonka's factory for old movies

OMG so fun!!
Why’d you put so much effort into this? 😭
for a company that makes videos this video sure is edited horribly, the music is too loud and your statements are frequently incomprehensible.
😆😆😆😆
