    Thanks for the tips, David! I enjoyed your poll on mite treatments, and I had an idea for another one 😀-what breed of bee does everyone keep? Everyone has their favorite. (Buckfast is mine). Also, I feel like we should have a countdown until December 21st, the winter solstice aka, Day One of bee season. Something exciting to look forward to (besides your videos, obviously) during these dreary days of winter!

    Great advice David! As a fourth generation beekeeper you touched on so many helpful points. And keep copious notes of all your inspections. I have found notes to be an invaluable asset. Write it down like your teachers always told you to do. God bless your bees!

    Hi David, How do you control small hive beetles? I've used the messy oil traps and the beetle barns with bait. I thought I had them under control until we started having frost and finding dead beetles on the white board insert over my screened bottom boards.

      Keep strong colonies in the sun, oil traps, reduce entrance, keep bee yard clean of comb or honey or rotting fruit and smash every beetle you see. Try dryer sheets.

    Thank you for the tip about swarming bees. Just 1 question: why is the max for the queenexcluder under the broodbox 10 days??
    Thanks in advance! Louis

    • @beek
      @beek  ปีที่แล้ว

      Because drones are trapped and will clog it up preventing foragers from being able to pass

    After about a 15 year hiatus I am looking to get a hive. Any tips on having a hive in town? More specifically here in Illinois? There seems to be no rules against it but I don’t know what I don’t know.

    Want to let you know that your tip #8 may need an update. 100% silicone will not take paint, it will just bead up on it just like nothing sticks to silicone molds or kitchen utensils. Make sure the Silicone you use says "Paintable" on it.

    • @jw112965
      @jw112965 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. There is paintable caulk. I think David assumed that paintable is silicone base.

    David, bee go on the frames will cause the bees not want to work them on the fall flow. I use fume board with a shim now as not to get any on top bars.

    Hey David!! I put on a Winter-Bee-Kind board and I am noticing about 15-20 dead bees every few days. When I pick up these dead bees to inspect them, they appear to be young fuzzy bees. Is this okay? Not sure if bees of Winter physiology are identifiable, but since this is my first year, I’m trying to learn/figure things out! Thanks!

    When I try to scoop bees for a varroa test they fly out faster than I can get them in the test kit!

    Great tips David! Thank you for another great video! By the way, I’m really enjoying your ultimate beekeeping video package. I’m on the first one which is the basic beekeeping set and even after a season of beekeeping, you have taught me things I didn’t know and it filled in the blanks on things I didn’t know or weren’t sure about. I’ve really been impressed and can’t thank you enough for sharing the knowledge you have and giving the GREAT 50% discount on Black Friday! I look forward to the rest of the videos in the package. I appreciate the worksheets and will send them into you upon completion. I still take notes on everything so I can go back to my notebook whenever I need to find something I may not be sure of or just plain forgotten. I’ve read many books and watched even more videos from many sources but you are always my “go to” and favorite to find what I’m looking for. I know beekeeping is a lifelong journey and I’m still at the baby stage but I sure feel better knowing you are here when I need it! THANK YOU my teacher and friend!

    Thanks David, all great tips.
    My tip, something that I've discovered, is how well honeybees thrive in smaller sized equipment. This is useful when beekeeping in cooler harsher climates.
    Rearing bees (splits, small swarms, etc) in a nuc box, and stacking nuc boxes like mini hives so bees travel vertically, until they build up the critical mass to fill at least 15 frames before moving them to 10 frame equipment has payed off in spades for me. I've even successfully overwintered colonies in these '5 frame hives' by pushing pairs of hives together and wrapping as a single unit. Keep up the good work buddy. Cheers!

    Hi David, gosh I cannot thank you enough for always sharing such valuable tips. I really appreciate learning from you. I have a question on painting equipment. How would we refresh paint on a box that’s occupied by a colony? Would we just completely move all the frames to a new box so we can paint the older box?
