    Hi David, I was in touch with your staff last week after a Bear tossed my hive, they gave me good advice. I waited 7 days looking for new egg and none was found. So I replaced my queen. Do a video on putting your hive back together after a Bear toss. I learned a lot in doing it and I know I could have used more. Thanks David

    David, I really enjoy your videos and presentation manner. I’m 76 and this will conclude my first year of beekeeping and I’ve learned a lot from your online courses and videos. Keep up the chase for your 100k goal. I’m curious how this winter in central Florida will turn out… hopefully no windchill like you might experience.

    Thank you for taking so much time out to explain going into winter inspection. The other day I walked away from my hive after noticing brood and larvae. I am sure the girls are fine. I am a newbie. I am feeding as suggested to and my hives is 3 stories and I think it's fine. There are at least 10 frames of honey for the girls. I appreciate all you do to help us. Again , thank you.

    Hi, we live in Western South Dakota and have cold, cold winters also. We have a fairly strong hive with two deep boxes and one hive with only one deep box. Do you insulate or wrap your hives?

    I acquired an established hive in August of this year. it is my first hive. when I first bought the hive, there was almost no honey. I have been feeding 2 to1 syrup since I first obtained the hive. now I have the hive a little more than half full of capped honey. the pollen is short but they have planty of honey.

    Hi David,
    Can you explain in a follow up video how the bees can consume your winter be kind candy board, but cannot consume the crystallized nectar.
    And thank you for all of the time you take to make these videos.

    • @ME_MeAndMyBees
      @ME_MeAndMyBees 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim B....
      David's Winter Bee Kind Candy Board, Fondant, even a Bag of White Sugar all utilise the same principle. In that : they are made of pure Sucrose (Bees can't get out for bathroom breaks in the Winter !) So need high energy food, with no impurities in them.
      Also, Sugar based Feeds of above kind, are Solid in nature, but attract moisture on their surfaces, with rising heat in a Hive. The Bees will move and lick this moist surface with the Feed and turn this into a type of instant Syrup. Warm rising air, with cooling, down the Hive internal Walls, and good lower/ entrance ventilation will also protect the Bees. Moist rising air won't harm the Bees, but a cold, damp, wet Hive will frankly kill the Bees when Winter comes.
      A well packed Colony of Bees will be cosy. 👍
      However a poor Bee population Hive, with empty Frames, not much Brood or available Food wont stimulate Baby Bee growth. Thus it will die...
      Hope this helps. 😎
      🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
      Happy Beekeeping 2022.

    Hi David. I live in Ohio. Just wondering when you extract your honey? I usually try to extract in late fall so very soon however I always leave a full super of honey for them. I’m smelling the odor of them making the honey right now a strong banana type smell. I wait until the odor is gone then I will extract. I have also done extracting in the spring if production wasn’t good in the fall. Good videos. Thank you and God Bless.

    Hi David I really enjoy your videos. I live in Ontario Canada . I can’t buy your winter be kind feeders. So I am going to feed with my hive top feeder. Currently have two deeps and one medium honey super on top with a queen excluder. Question is. Do I put my hive top liquid feeder on top of the partially filled medium super. Or should I remove that medium super before feeding.

    Why teach new beekeepers to pull a center frame first and roll their queen? Not how most are taught.

    • @beek
      @beek  ปีที่แล้ว

      I teach to pull the outer frame against the wall first. Sometimes in a pinch, like in this video I said for the sake of time, and I could tell I could get away with it, I can pull one in the middle. Unfortunately my TH-cam videos are NOT classes. It just videos of me working hives in various situations. Here's a link to my online beekeeping classes if you are interested: www.honeybeesonline.com/online-beekeeping-academy/

    I agree strongly with your observations David. Your hobbyist point of view is very helpful & watching folks like Ian is just amazing. I chose a few weeks ago I do not intend to harvest honey from my 3 colonies. Many people seem to want the honey & don't mind replacing the loss from taking the built up stores. I'll be in touch for a few winter bee kind soon. As I recall you begin shipping in August. Thanks so much, as always~

  • @christinecontelmo9264

    I agree with the comments putting a hive back together after falling over. Mine fell over after a heavy rain. I found the hive on its side intact but the frames racked in the 2 supers and 2 deeps. When I looked inside the foundations with honey popped out. Not fun, the bees were so angry and they made it difficult to pop back in when 60k bees are everywhere. I have yet to go back to see how well I did. Days later the bees are aggressive. I haven’t been able to see if the queen is ok.

    I really enjoy all your videos. We are heading into our second winter of beekeeping. I rely on your videos primarily as my first resource. Last year we had our state apiarist come out and help inspect our hives our first winter. Feeding the bees following your guide enabled every hive to flourish over the winter and this past spring every hive was busting with new bees. Spring of 2022 we went from three hives to five hives. I plan to purchase more of your honey B kind and will continue to watch your videos to try to learn as much as possible. We still are unsure about some things so we plan to take your online course. Thank you for all of your time you dedicate to helping teach about bee keeping.

    Thank you, can you please talk about over wintering nucs? For their best chance to make it through the winter, how many frames of bees do you need, how much honey in the hive or how much should it weigh? 5 frame nuc or two boxes 5 over 5? Thanks in advance.

    • @beek
      @beek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. I've watched queens feed themselves especially new queens. Once a retinue is established, she rarely has to feed herself. Drones I'm sure are the same way. If they get hungry enough I do not think they would wait to be spoon fed 😃

  • @jamesbarron1202
    @jamesbarron1202 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Will each of your hives kick out the drones all within a weeks time? In other words do they do it pretty much the same time because they all sense it’s time?

    • @beek
      @beek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, you will generally see drones being kicked out for two months. Hives that are queenless or raising a queen will not kill their drones even though those drones do not mate with that queen.

  • @tmgibbs18
    @tmgibbs18 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @beek

      Certainly not worth the time and expense, but yes you could try. But I feed my bees my winter-bee-kinds so I'm debating leaving two supers on. Really do not need that much since I'm feeding them all winter.

  • @SergeantMajorH
    @SergeantMajorH 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here in East Tennessee I still had plenty of drones in the 10 hives I looked at today. Will check another 10-15 tomorrow.
    I noticed at the end you left all the propolis on the hive. I was taught to keep it clean. Please explain.
    Also, you mentioned rain. Are you familiar with any studies involving atmospheric pressure as related to bee temperament? They are sensitive to highand low pressure, of course, but do we know the altimeter min/max window where bees remain more calm - not counting the "inspecting the lowest brood box" anger. A simple weather guage with barometer pressure for beekeeping is a must, if this hypothesis is true.

    • @beek
      @beek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill, all good points. I do not have the luxury of only inspecting at the right barometric pressure. Propolis is part of the hive's immune system killing pathogens so I do not like removing it. I figure they put it there for a reason.

    • @SergeantMajorH
      @SergeantMajorH 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@beek I guess the propolis helps keep out beetles if I leave it there. I understand your situation with the barometric pressure, but I've searched the parameters for a long time, if it's even a scientific factor that has been studied by experts, not just saying, well here comes the rain and the bees are getting angry. This is something that should be known. Maybe I'll ask Bob or call Univ. of Tennessee. Thank you!

    • @beek
      @beek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I've made videos of bees rushing back to the hive because a storm is approaching that I cannot even see or hear. I often teach in my online courses that you should work bees in the middle of the day and when barometric pressure is high.
