    The plastic cage is a queen introduction cage and works perfectly. You put the queen in one end and candy in the end with the 'tab'. Remove the tab and the bees will eat their way through the candy to release the queen. I use them a lot.

    This was an awesome video you guys. You ask "what is that extra long metal hive tool?" It was designed for modified hive like mine that have double deep frames, and for Layens frames which are much longer. I have one and love it. it make cutting cross comb and bur comb on the side of the hive way down deep very easy. And that Black bag is not to catch a swarm, it is for retrieving a swarm from a tree.
    Yet I knew what everything was for in this video, except that blue ball. And this is the issue I see with most beekeepers, that they don't learn about beekeeping prior to starting up with beekeeping. I took over a year and did extensive studying and learning prior to getting my bees.

  • @johnboec3

    The long hive tool is to cut through honey down in the hive so you can lift 1 frame at a time. It also separates it from the side of hive.

  • @oneshoo
    @oneshoo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The wooden handle hive tool with the hammer is an outstanding tool! It’s heavy duty and doesn’t budge when separating frames. I use the hammer too! When you need to separate your boxes and they are propolized (spelling?) together, I take my nice thin hive tool and bang it between the boxes instead of using the palm of my hand which causes pain! The hammer works great. I also exclusively use the uncapping roller. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a great uncapper. I only use the wax for coating foundation. Good stuff Sherry and Dave 👍

    The plastic entrance is a reducer for insulated hives mainly. I believe that bees will use dead bees to block off an entrance when it gets cold. I used to clean the entrances but found they just did it again! Valve box, they are talking about an inground water meter lid.

  • @citrumpet1

    I have both of those hive tools. The long one just feels good to use and a lot of commercial beekeepers use them. Good for stabbing dropped drone comb that drops to the bottom of the hive, or making one long sweep of burr comb off the top of frames. The wood handled is my favorite of all the tools I have. Easy to pick up with gloves on, the hook fits in the frames easier than the Italian tool. The hammer portion can be used as a prop when prying frames up in the opposite direction. It feels better in the hand than the angular piece of steel. Just my opinion. The plastic entrance mouse guard section of the entrance you showed can be pulled out and turned upside down for a reducer. I try to stay open minded as there are so many closed minded people in this world. Trying new products keeps it interesting whether they work or not.

    • @beek

      You can hold off on the queen excluder but then you have to be comfortable moving her back down. You can add more wax to your frames. Once you have drawn comb in your stored honey supers you can reuse them and the bees do not have to build them out each year.

    That wood thing with gears 26:17 is for people who wire their frames for wax foundation. I'm using wire like I learned in 1991 the first time I handled bees in the northwest.. I have to agree with you on all the crap stuff marketed to internet shoppers, there are tons of gadgets for beetles and queen rearing such as nicot.. I mostly deal with MannLake after another company sold me some hive kits and the frames would not fit because of poor manufacturing and low quality wood.

    Wow... I sent you the pic of the little round escape with the flaps. I'd been sent one as a substitute in an order, that was short, of a different kind. I knew exactly what it was and how to use it but asked you what it was called and if you'd seen it before because the design was really impressive and I wanted more... you said you knew of it and even sold it in your store, which you don't, and to look out for this video. Now you're all "how would you even use this?" You would easily be able to attach it over an oval opening even though it is round and many people have round holes specifically for feeder jars... Also, for the large diamond shape escape, most inner lids are recessed on at least one side if not both at different measurements so fitting it in would not be an issue. Little disappointed in you guys...

      I talked with my staff, and they said we do not sell them. That one was sent in a box with other amazon beekeeping stuff even though we did not order it. Maybe google it. The hole size needed is 64 mm. Hope that helps.

    Great vid love watching them. The big bee escape is used a lot in the uk, works well with above bee space hives to empty suppers, the fist yellow bar entrance guard is used over an entrance so stop wasps and mice only really used late in the year used again a lot in uk and taken of in spring, when used it can be moved in and out to help bees defend their colony. Care must be taken to check for it becoming blocked but works well. The long hive tool is for modified frames that are really long to get to any burr comb connecting them.

  • @donaldjones3580
    @donaldjones3580 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also have the long triangle bee escape, advantage is it removeable from the inner cover so you don't have a dedicated board like the wooden triangle type. I'm not patient enough for a bee escape to work.

  • @raymondrobinson5251
    @raymondrobinson5251 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That round bee escape! My thoughts would be for useing an intercover with a round hole for the round hive top feeder. The one I referred to Frederick Dunn idea of a scrape piece of wood with a hole placed on top of the traditional design hole.

    Long hive tool could be also used to clear out dead bees on the bottom board.

    • @beek
      @beek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the winter, I need something much longer than that long hive tool. I take a long piece of rebar and bend a hook on the end. Then I can stay way back and drag out dead bees. There are much less dead bees on a screen bottom board.

    Some people, who make their own equipment, will put a round hole in their inner cover for simplicity. The round bee escape looks like it would work on a variety of hole sizes. I only have four hives and I personally prefer to brush the bees off each frame and put them in a special tote for transport.

    • @Max-po5sx
      @Max-po5sx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My curiosity is getting the best of me. the last part of your comment about brushing the bees off putting them in a box for transport. are you telling me that you brush all the bees into a box to move the "hive"? And then put the bees back in the old hive where the eggs and brood were... in the new location?

    • @somewhatinformed1208
      @somewhatinformed1208 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Max-po5sx move the colony you called a "Hive" ,to a Hive you called a "old hive" YES the colony will do better if you let the bee have the eggs and brood ... in the new location. Yes the OLD bees will not be at new location if not taken there, to take care of the NEW HIVE colony. The wax comb is the hive aka "HOME" weather it be in a tree, a house wall or a box.
