- Louie Bellson Big Band at the BBC circa 1980
having a clear out at home and found this gem.
ftg -abridged TV versions of 'Explosion' & 'Intimacy of the Blues'
with rare Louie interview.
Along with Buddy, Steve Gadd & Airto Moreira one of my biggest influences. I met the lovely man back stage during this tour as a an impressionable boy at Ronnie Scott's....one of the main reasons I do what I do now. - เพลง
I had the privilege of seeing Louie Bellson perform with the Buddy Rich Band at the Village Green in Danvers Mass. around 1971. Buddy had to cancel due to an illness and he got Louie to fill in. What an unbelievable experience watching Louie play Buddy's charts!
Thanks so much for posting. I barely remember doing this. I'm the kid on the left end of the trumpet section---Brian O'Flaherty
Must have been quite an experience!
Lead or jazz?
Love Louie more than Buddy these days
And thanks for adding your comment, Brian. I recall hearing you play -- must have been just a couple years earlier -- with Ron Modell's NIU big band.
@@geraldramsey4905 thanks. Yes, the NIU band was a great experience
Thank you Steve Taylor and thank goodness for the find most of all thank you Mr. Bellson for inspiring many to become drummers. i struck trifecta with this today.
A real gentle man of the drums...but those single stroke rolls on the kick drums? Wow!
I met and interviewed Louie for my college newspaper. What I thought would be a 20 minute conversation turned into an hour and he and his wife couldn’t have been nicer!
❤
Thank you so much for sharing!
In the early 90s Mr. Bellson gave a clinic and performance at my college.
I met him after the show and he was kind enough to talk with me for a few minutes.
I was only playing drums a few years at the time, and in my ignorance and naivete, I asked him why he played his china cymbal upside down? 😄
🙏❤🌹 Louie 🌹❤🙏
Steve, Thank you!
In my dreams, I can now to walk into a club in any town USA and experience this incredible band today!!!
I saw Louie in person, with one of his big bands only once, 20 years later (New Years Eve. 2000 at the Fox Theater in Redwood City California). A half hour version of Matt Catingub's arrangement "Explosion" was played beginning at midnight. Louie was a gentleman after the set, answering questions and signing autographs to all for at least an hour after the "New Millennium Set".. He was 75 years old at the time, with the enthusiasm for his music and encouragement of his fans of a someone 50 years younger!
A class act (perhaps better stated, a sincere and genuine person) and of course, one of the greatest not only big band band leaders, but jazz drummers that ever lived....
Had a similar experience with Mr. Bellson. A class act! ❤
Formidabile drummer ! He could play in trio, quartet or big band , and a music Reader too.
Wow , Louie was the MAN❤
I said this on a Buddy Rich video but I truly believe he is the only one who could go toe to toe with him.
Intimacy of the Blues---great trumpet solo by the late Mike Lawrence
1:49 certainly made me take notice. Wow!
When Louie was really feeling it- Forget about it
Fantastic listening
britrpt57 I have quite a few black and white photos I took of Louis and the band when he played Belfast in 1982. A great band and drummer, thanks for posting Steve.

I saw Bellson in '74 at Disneyland and he was playing Pearl Drums. Then Remo. This must be earlier.
love him, he was amazing, i like more him for his musicality than buddy, he was more innovtor...., thanks a lot for the video
Nonsense
@@vgr112261 why?, what you dont understand?, i mean innovative, specially with the bass drums...
There was nothing Louie did that Buddy couldn’t do, and in fact did do…like the double bass drum in response to all the chatter about Louie and his 2 bass drums. Buddy had 2 set up in front and proceeded to teach everyone how to play two vs. one. Second, the word “musicality” is overused and never defined. Listen to the double album with Buddy and Louie behind Ella for tasty playing, or Buddy with Nat King Cole, or Buddy with Art Tatum, or Buddy with Benny Goodman on the Merv Griffin show(video). I love Louie too but please…
For me ,Louies skill set was wider than Buddies , just an opinion.
I remember this being aired.as far as I remember he also played Belfast. great to see again, thanks for uploading
Great sounds!!!! Thanks for posting!!!
I met Louie back in the 1990s. Not only was he the worlds greatest drummer,he was also a great man
From Keith Jones Christian drummer North Devon now retired to Bude. A great drummer and a gentleman as well. Met Mr. Bellson when I set up his Slingerland drums in Exeter when he did a drum demo alongside the great Kenny Clare at Bill Greenhalgh's shop in Exeter in the l980's. After the demo he came up and thanked me for setting up his drums for him. A sad loss when he passed on. God Bless you Louie Psalm 23 (K.J.) If interested google you tube Keith Jones drum solo Barnstaple North Devon.
Matched grip action at the beginning!
God bless that dear man. He lives on in these videos. This is an excellent example of his band. Sitting in front of those 2 bass drums was was unbelievable to me at 16 in 1974 at Disneyland. He was playing a new Pearl kit. Just a great show!
There’s some serious muscle behind Bellson’s musical brains. You’ve gotta love his stick control. So subtle at times and always swingin.’ 😃🥁
Just got aware of what true music hereos look like
I believe Chick Webb would have been number one on the Drummer as band leader list. Ray McKinley and Ben Pollack also before the others as band leaders.
What else can you say about Louie, certainly one of the finest drummers ever. The bands were always great as well. So who is the one musical genius that didn't like this?
Which SLINGERLAND snare at the beginning…?
Brilliant sound ..
Great to see this. Now I'm trying to figure out why young Howard Stern is on alto sax.
Andy Mackintosh RIP
Those Slingerlands sound great!
I find this version of "Explosion" more appealing than the 12 minute cut as it had far too much drum soloing in it.
I can certainty see where ginger baker got some of his style from..
Bobby Shew in the trumpet section?
Yes, playing lead!
He was with Slingerland in 1980?
Yes.Then switched to Pearl.
brittpt57....who are the rest of the players?
I WORKED THE PEARL BAILEY AND LOUIE BELLSON SHOW WITH THE HOUSTON POPS ORCHESTRA.
BACK IN THE 80S.

After the 5 minute mark Louie says " we have marvellous personnel on this band" and the interviewer says "some people might dispute that." What did he mean by that? You couldn't have had a better band. Maybe I'm misinterpreting his comments.
Hi Brian - what he says is "some might dispute third in line..." a very typically british way of handing out a compliment! BTW I remember your lead playing on the woody herman band - hope you're still playin'!
He was referring to Bellson saying he (Bellson) was 3rd in line behind Krupa and Rich. The interviewer was paying Louie a compliment....not referring to his band personnel.
@@clevoguer Thank you for the clarification. I still play but lately only in the practice room.
@@wewaco352 Yes exactly. It just came across a bit convoluted.
Who's the idiot- "What did he mean -" .Listen to the whole thing . It's as clear as ABC. Just saying.
Frank Szabo on lead.
Frank Strazzeri on piano
