I was privileged to produce this tour and this concert but the BBC - I am so grateful to Steve Taylor for sourcing this video recording - deepest gratitude - i miss Louie so much - blessings Louie for your friendship, your kindness, your amazing playing, the wonderful bands and the great music - So happy to see Bobby Shew, Arnie Lawrence (so sadly missed), Joe Romano and all those fabulous players - blessing to you all.

Thank you Steve and Peter. I just uncovered the Hale Rood charts to this tour, abandoned in a storage locker in Seattle. I think Hale is perhaps the second trombonist in this video (glasses). Anyway, University of Washington jazz will keep the flame going on this. The charts are involved (!) Blessings.
I sat in several times on drums (Thank u, Lorca Hart) in 2005 w/ John Heard at Charlie O's in Van Nuys. I remember he extended his bass out in font of him!. At that time I didn't know he had played w/ both Basie AND Louie!
American Big Bands always go for it head on,they never hold back, and the college music system there makes us look so backward. We have lived off the North's brass band tradition to supply so many of our top players, that's what happens when you have privileged public schoolboy politicians in charge of your educational institutions.

This is big band music in wonderland. So very thankfull that we can witness it again. It doesnt get any better.
I grew up a drummer since age 7 now 71 I idolized Louie, I only wish I could have seen & heard Louie & any one of his orchestras play..........
I was lucky enough to see him three times twice in the 70s and ones in the early 90s got to meet them both times what a nice man awesome musician
Thank you for posting this
I believe the opening tune is Sambadera swing
Bobby Shew played w Buddy Rich
Andy Macintosh played with Maynard .
Alan Downey and Bobby Shew
Louis Bellson, the drummer Buddy Rich asked to sit in for him while he was recovering from a back injury.
Thanks!!!
Its great to hear the legend if the double kick drum showing his stuff!
Decades ahead of his time!
Duke Ellington called Louis Bellson " The Worlds Greatest Musician " and I agree totally ! Much Love and Respect to them And other Jazz Greats !
Wonderful!!!!
Fantastic! I saw this band in Eskilstuna Sweden same year. I was 15.
A few familiar Brit faces there! Alan Downey, Andy Mackintosh amongst others.
Anyone know the name of the flugelhorn solo bobby Shew does third tune in on this video? Absolutely stunning. What a band.
'Blue' written by Bobby Shew (dedicated to Blue Mitchell) :-)
@@SteveTaylorbigmusic thank you Steve.
Thanks to Steve White for introducing me to Louis, phenomenal double bass skills decades before thrash! 🥁😬
Wow!!
Another great version of Blue by Bobby Shew on flugelhorn beginning at 7:56.
Arnie Lawrence playing some burning alto solos!
Clint Sharman trombone

Joe Romano 1st Tenor
Louie knew what he was doing and executed it perfectly.
13:05 "A little Syncopation"
If you like Louie Bellson and Buddy Rich and no others I would not criticize you.
Looks like Ken Hitchcock who played with buddy rich around the same time.
21:30 😂❤
This is pure gold.
Not Kenny Hitchcock on 2nd tenor...

Buddy's music isn't a patch on Louis band.
What does that mean
@@robertcarli5803 Louies music is better in my opinion
I can't agree more. I hardly listen to Buddy Rich these days. Louie was much cleaner-i.e. precise, more melodical, and fluid
Anyone know the names of all these numbers?
