Wow! Thanks! This was my problem. Removed the check valve from my NPE-240A, it was gunked up and did not move freely with the spring action. Cleaned it with some wd-40 and it loosened up perfectly. The hot water was now able to flow without the mix of the cold. Great info and thanks for the video!
Thank you so much!!! Navien wouldn't talk to me, so I had to call a plumber. The plumber sat on HOLD with Navien for more than an hour and a half and went from number 39 in the queue to number 20 in the queue. I made them leave before they could charge me for another hour. After watching your video, I took out the check valve, cleaned it, and smeared a light coating of silicone grease on the inside O-ring, and it's working beautifully again! You are a life saver!
I’m so glad I could help! Great job on doing your own repair! Sometimes that’s all it takes is to pull it out, clean it, and put it right back in! Thank you for watching and thank you for the kind words!
Thank you for this video. This was the exact problem we were having. The plumber told us it was our shower thermostatic cartridge and charged us over $500 to replace it. We were still having the issues with the water temperature fluctuating and not getting hot. I found your video, ordered the check valve and was able to replace it myself. It fixed the problem THANK YOU!!!!!
Thank you so much for the helpful video. The check valve for my Navien NPE-240A failed last year, the plumber charged me ~$500 to diagnose and fix. After only 1 year, the same happened with water being just Luke warm. I watched the video, purchased the valve and replaced it. Work well now. Saved me ~$400. One thing to note is that the check valve purchased from Boston Heating Supply is not the right one for my 2016 NPE-240A or the valve shown in the video ( I purchased and it did not fit). I found the right valve in SUPPLIES DEPOT, part # 30008360A. I got two since this valve seems to have short life of ~1 year.
Your ability to explain is great. You helped me solve my problem, where even the plumber could not - they are quick to propose you the most complex solution, where a 6$ replacement part can do it.
Thank you for helping me fix my navien 240A. You saved me a couple of hundred dollars. Navien tech support was terrible and will not work with anyone other than plumbers. Got my part from Boston heating supply as listed in previous threads, thank you.
Yes I got the same treatment. Navien doesn’t support home owners!! They won’t even send you the service manual due to liability! That’s lousy customer support. Sending a manual doesn’t make them liable but they don’t care. Ridiculous!
I’m leaving this text for people in the future. Go buy an o-ring kit (the one I have is for 134a conversions) from a parts store and disassemble the check valve. Replace the o-ring inside. I noticed the navien supplied o-ring was swelling. Which leads me to believe they have chosen the wrong durometer/ materials. This swelling stops the plunger inside from closing correctly. Hope this helps and saves some frustration!
Good video. I had the exact problem. When I went to replace the check valve, the top bit was actually broken off, so I had to take out the tee fitting to clear. Added a couple of minutes but easy enough. Keep an eye on the O-rings if you take off the tee.
My wife had not showered in two days due to long days at work. She did her work out last night and no hot water. Thinking it was the heat exchanger I did a two hour flush but nothing. Did the bypass and viola hot water. My check valve was disintegrated when I pulled it but at least could get half of it back in to stop water from leaking. I ordered the check valve with overnight shipping and will replace it and a few other o rings. I've had my Navien for 7 years and this is first time a part has failed. We have extremely hard water. My wife and family just want to say thank you!!!!!
Just paid out the nose to have a plumber replace the check valve. Looks like quite a simple replacement that I can do should I need it in the future! Like they say though, you pay for what they know, not what they do. A lot of people may not want to mess with this, but I'm here to learn!
Thanks man! I called Navien and told them I was a homeowner but they wouldn't help me at all. They said I need a "professional" to come out. Your mirrored the same issues I had anyway. Thanks again!
My pleasure. I’ll have to look for it. I thought that one of the commenters had listed the part number but I can’t seemed to find it now. I called Navien and they sent me a free replacement valve so I never had to use a part number to order one. I recall reading a forum that said Supplies Depot sold them so you might check their website.
this helped me immensely, many thanks. In my case, it only seemed to be the shower that wasn't hot enough, the nearby tub always worked great (higher flow). This led us down the expensive but fruitless path of replacing the shower cartridge, which didn't work, then the whole valve, which also didn't do the job. Finally, a $7 part that I installed myself with the help of this video solved it.
Great video.... cured my problem. Only 1 issue. Navien wouldn't provide much help to me as a non-licensed plumber. Based on your video, I bought a new check valve and just asked the question of whether it could be the check valve. Technician said could be the problem so I replaced it and problem solved. Thx so much for your video!
Thank you for this video! I had the same issue with my Navien NPE 240a right after a copper pipe pinhole leak on the hot water line (maybe one caused the other?). In any case I did a lot of searching on the internet for what the problem might be, and this video was the most helpful result. I ordered part # 30008360A from tanklessparts for $6 + shipping. Once I got it though I chickened out and wanted a licensed plumber to troubleshoot with Navien Support first (they wouldn't troubleshoot with me). Took them only 5 min to notice that the GPM (gallons per min) was not what it should be, and the tech said it could either be the flow sensor or the check valve. The tech also recommended a thorough flush with one of those more expensive products (not just white vinegar), something like Haymaker. I told the plumber I'd get the flow sensor and have him come back to install both later, but after he left I felt the check valve installation was most likely the culprit. Once I removed the check valve it was plain to see the spring was unseated, and there may have also been a bit of the plastic missing too. After installation of the new check valve, my hot water is back to normal! I could have saved a bit of money if I wouldn't have chickened out but oh well. Couple of tips for the installation. I would recommend draining the water from the water heater fully, probably from the bottom drain plug. I tried draining from the service ports but that didn't drain it all the way and I ended up having some water come out after removing the check valve. That was a little scary because it wasn't just a few drops, it was pouring out and I was worried it would damage some electronics or wires. I made sure to dry the area thoroughly with towels and a fan before flipping that internal power switch back on. Second tip is don't forget to remove the cap that the check valve has on it. I know it's a silly tip, but at first I didn't know why the part didn't fit, and then I realized the cap was still on :P
Thanks for video. My almost new Navien had this issue. The plumber that installed was able to get help from Navien to diagnose, but your explanation shows exactly what happened and I am waiting for delivery of new check valve. This time I had a warranty from installer, but next time I might be out there not able to get help from Navien, dependent on videos like yours!
This is an incredibly detailed explanation on not only how to replace the check valve but about the simplicity of troubleshooting the water heater. Great job and Thank You
Thanks! Just fixed mine by removing the valve and cleaning the dirt out of the spring so it can move freely again and putting some o-ring grease on both the o-rings
Thank you so much. This was super helpful. Navian wouldn't give me any information because I am not a plumber due to liability reasons. I called a company and after they send a plumber, he talked to Navian tech support and determined the issue which was exactly like yours. I purchased the valve and followed your video. It was 15 minutes job. You save me $835 of labor. Thanks again.
You are very welcome! And I'm super glad to hear that this was helpful to you! Honestly, that is why I made the video, because I needed to change the check valve on mine and couldn't find any detailed videos on how to change one out. Thanks for watching!
Super helpful! I have external recirculation piping, but looking at this video and manual I was able to figure that all out and shut the valve while also adjusting the dip switches. NOW MY HEATER WORKS WELL AGAIN!! A happy wife is a happy life! I have a new check valve on order. Much happier to pay for a $5 part vs. $200+ dollar plumber bill to put in a $5 part which is so easy to remove/reinstall. 😀😀😀😀
Thank-you so much for this video! After replacing the check valve during a yearly flush the water in the house has been the hottest it's been in months. Thanks again!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video , your demo of the panel is very helpful, I have to learn the other parameters , I think after watching your video I am going to pull the check valve when I do my yearly service . I bet in a pinch you could pull the valve and wash it and work it free , till you could get a new one , I paid 30 .00 for mine there was only one seller on Amazon that had it . my local plumping supply did not stock it . I will be buying a few from Boston Heating Supply . ( Thank you fellow Y Tubers ) Pete M
Great idea and I think you are correct. In a pinch you might be able to work it free. Who knows! But having one on hand is an excellent idea. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much for the kind words! I was so frustrated that there weren't any detailed videos about check valve issues when I was having them. So I figured I would make one in the hopes that it could help people save some money if they had nowhere else to turn. Thanks for watching, and again thanks for the kind words!
Thank you, this was super helpful! Note that your bypass valve and switch settings may be different if you have a recirculation line, which they were in my case. My bypass needed to be at 6 o'clock, and 1=off, 2=on for the switches. The check valve replacement was super easy and now I'm getting plenty of hot water. Thanks again!
This was a very well done video. Thank you very much. Unfortunately I had to work so had to call in a service man who charged $140 to analyse the problem then $300 for the visit to replace the valve…. At least it was in Canadian dollars so ONLY $ 340 US
Thank you for the video! I wish I had seen it before calling the HVAC tech. Just to diagnose the issue (which the tech just called Navien Tech Support!) cost me $150!! So now I am going to replace the check valve myself instead of having them come back and do it since it'll probably cost me $500!!!
I followed your suggestion, removed the check valve, inspect it and cleaned it out thoroughly. Whoa and behold, my tank is now working flawlessly - I now have a happy wife again. I truly thank you for sharing your experience with us. That tank is a buffer tank. The 6 oclock and 9 valve is Ext and Int respectively. I went one step further and activated Intelligent Preheating by toggling dip switch #2 - so far so good. Thanks again...
I'm so glad that the video helped! Great job on the Intelligent Preheating too! And I'm also glad that you have a Happy Wife again! Thanks so much watching and also for the kind words!
Thank you for making this video. It is very informative. I appreciate how you demonstrated and explained how to use the "display controller." And the tank you refer to as a recirc tank, the Navien parts manual calls it a "buffer tank."
Thanks so much for this video..I've been having issues with my water going from hot to cold. I bypassed recirculation and it fixed my issue. I just ordered the valve replacement. Called Navien and they were no help. Called a certified plumber and they didn't want to waste time on it. They tried to tell me it was a water flow issue (even though it just started to happen).
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I had the same issue you described. I previously had sediment in my system from the well pump and flushed and cleaned the Navien twice. It wasn’t until your video that I learned about the check valve. I removed mine, cleaned it out separately and moved the valve manually to make sure the spring still worked. It seemed ok so I reinserted it and it’s back to working like new. Your kind generosity in sharing this information solved the problem and lifted a cloud of uncertainty. Saved me a costly service call and made my day. Thank you so very much.
This is a very helpful video and very good work explaining everything clearly. I am having the same issue with my Navien NPE-210A2 and I've only had it for 6 months! They are sending me a new check valve.
Great job. I had the exact same problem on the same unit and this solved it. Couldn't pull the old check valve out from the T assembly where it sits , had to pull the whole thing which was relatively easy. New Check valve was $5 + shipping from Boston Heating Supply .
Thank you kindly! And I can totally see that being a potential issue too. Seems like those check valves really glue themselves in there, don't they? Great job to you for being able to diagnose the problem and take care of it for only $5! That's a win all day long!
Great video and thank you so much! It helped me identifying the issue with my NPE-240. The explanation part was incredibly helpful for ones like me having no technical expertise. The actual replacement part took me just few mins (though I’d urge others to take enough time for draining). Again, thank you!
Thank you so much for making this detailed video. We determined that our check valve had gone bad, and thanks to your video I knew exactly how to change it in under 10 minutes. Do you have a Venmo or PayPal? I’d like to send you a tip since it only cost me $4.67 to fix instead of hundreds to hire someone to come out.
Yeap mine acted up six years later. I never knew better to flush it yearly. So that speaks volumes for the unit, as long as we do this yearly maintenance we should be able to get 20 or more years out of it...I wish navien had sent a reminder to maintain the unit.
My heater was reading lower flow than I was getting, and luke warm water coming out. Replaced the flow sensor with no result. Just popped out the check valve and lo-and-behold the o-ring that sits around the valve was partly off causing it to leak. Popped it back on and flow rate came straight back up. I'm assuming that it will go again pretty soon so I'll get a replacement ordered. Thanks for saving my sanity!
Thanks, this was very informative. My unit is almost 6 yo, same issue. Wonder if I can turn off internal circulation off, both switch and dip and just live without it altogether…
Honestly, I’m not sure. That’s a great question! I don’t see why you couldn’t…… But I’m not sure if that would cause any other issues down the road. I would check with Navien just to be sure.
Hello. If you are troubleshooting the check valve, then just put switch number 1 in the down position and then turn that bypass valve (the one I pointed out) to the 6 o'clock position. Per Navien tech support, they indicated that was the only switch that needs to be flipped. If at that point you have hot water, then you have a bad check valve and it needs to be replaced. Hope that helps!
I removed the check valve and only 1/2 half of the valve came out. Looks like the remaining part is stuck inside. Any idea as to how remove the broken part from the cavity? Thanks
Hmmmmmm….. Not sure exactly. I wonder if there is a way to get needle nose pliers in there to gently pull it out? I’ve never had to do that so I don’t have any tried and true method to follow. Whatever you do, be sure and be CAREFUL!
I have a terrible experience with Navien customer service, tried couple times now, they DON'T speak to or deal with home owner, it has to be a licensed plumber, for my situation, even a plumber called, can't find any issue with the water heater which I have problem with, my heater NPE240A is only 1-1/2 years old, the problem is "water sandwich" when you taking a shower, (first water comes out with your preset temperature, during shower water will getting cooler, and cooler than hot again, and repeat several timesb/4 finishh shower ), thanks for your vedio, I need to test it with your procedure. I am writing these is because Navien WON'T speak with home owner.
Sorry to hear about your experience with Navien Customer Service. It seems that some folks get help and others don't seem to have much luck with them. I hope the video helped you and you are able to diagnose your issue. Your water heater is not very old and I wouldn't think that you should be having issues with it at this point. Good Luck and thank you for watching!
Navien worked with me, but they certainly don't work with everyone. That is why I made this video- so that if you can't get support, at least you have this as a resource. And you are correct, I don't have a recirc plumbing line, but I do have the optional internal tank- and per Navien, that requires 9 O'clock. That is how my unit came from the factory, set at 9, and per them that is how it should be set. And you are correct, I do not have a recirc line, but if I did that changes the game. In that case I would need 1 off and 2 on. But again, the setup I showed is for an internal tank setup like mine ONLY. Sorry if this was confusing to you.
@@TDScotty what telephone number did you use? BTW verified dip settings all off no recirc,1 on 9o'click internal pump no recirc line, 1 off 2 on 6o'clock recirc line, 1&2 on intelligent pre- heat.
Be careful with the so-called manual bypass valve shown repositioning from the 9 o'clock to the 6 o'clock position. I tried this but got into trouble at least with my NPE 240A. When I moved the valve to the 6 o'clock position the circulation pump ran continuously dead-headed and became very hot almost to the point of burning up. Beware!!!
Wow. That's the first I have heard of this. Did you do as Navien tech support suggested, and put selector switch Number 1 in the "down" position before moving your bypass valve to the 6 O'clock position? If you did not do that first, then maybe that caused the circ pump and excess heat issue? That's all I can think of.... Anyway, thank you for alerting us to a potential issue there.
You should have gotten an error message preventing the unit from running...there's really no need to set it to the 6 position, that setting is strictly for when you install an external buffer tank and set the dip switch to recognize it.
Ya navien..will only troubleshoot a plumber. Homeowner is questions only! There's a 20-minute time limit. I called back because I had one more question I was put on hold and hung up on. I called back again they answered about two questions and hung up on me. Not great customer service at all
Me too, they said my warranty is void cuz i installed myself, beware! dont tell them. You have to pay a plumber to get any service so never a cheap fix
Wow! Thanks! This was my problem. Removed the check valve from my NPE-240A, it was gunked up and did not move freely with the spring action. Cleaned it with some wd-40 and it loosened up perfectly. The hot water was now able to flow without the mix of the cold. Great info and thanks for the video!

This was a very well done video. Thank you very much. Unfortunately I had to work so had to call in a service man who charged $140 to analyse the problem then $300 for the visit to replace the valve…. At least it was in Canadian dollars so ONLY $ 340 US
Thank you very much for the kind words and thank you for watching!. Sorry to hear about the expense you just went through! Ouch!
Thank you for the video! I wish I had seen it before calling the HVAC tech. Just to diagnose the issue (which the tech just called Navien Tech Support!) cost me $150!! So now I am going to replace the check valve myself instead of having them come back and do it since it'll probably cost me $500!!!
Super glad to hear that! Yeah, it's crazy how much money you can spend on this repair, isn't it?? Just crazy! Thanks for watching and glad it helped!!
Thank you for being very descriptive on the whole process !!!!
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
Thank you for making this video. It is very informative. I appreciate how you demonstrated and explained how to use the "display controller." And the tank you refer to as a recirc tank, the Navien parts manual calls it a "buffer tank."
Thank you for watching. And Navien definitely knows their terminology better than I do, that's for sure!
Thank You! I second Jack that this is helpful for not only changing the check valve, but how to troubleshoot and read the codes. Great Job!
Thank you, kindly! I appreciate it and I am glad it provided some level of clarity!
Great video that's coming from a plumber that often does these repairs.
Thank you for the kind words!
Great video. It helped me more than anything I’ve found. Thanks
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
You are very welcome! I'm glad it helped!
Very much true, support line refused to work with me, they insisted on a certified professional...
A update I pulled out the old part and it was snapped in half.
@@josejoubert4395 I had the exact same issue! I guess us homeowners are too stupid to work on their NASA level Tankless hot water heaters!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m so glad this was helpful! And great job getting yours working!
Excellent and very well explained. This is the best video on this topic on the net.
Thank you for watching and thank you for the kind words!
Great info it worked for me thank you. New check valve is on its way.
Glad it helped!
Great video and thank you so much! It helped me identifying the issue with my NPE-240. The explanation part was incredibly helpful for ones like me having no technical expertise. The actual replacement part took me just few mins (though I’d urge others to take enough time for draining). Again, thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Great Video! I have to do one tomorrow and was glad to have found a video before i went to do it. thank you so much.
Thank you for watching! You are very welcome!
Great video, thank you for posting. Just like the other posters, it saved me a bunch of money and was a very simple fix.
Thank you and I’m glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
Happy to hear that! And don’t worry about it. I’m glad that the video helped you!! Thank you for watching!
Excellent video that helped to fix my problem. Thank you for a detailed video that addressed the issue. My wife can have a hot shower now!!
That's great news! Plus, Happy Wife, Happy Life!!
This solved my problem as well! Very helpful. Thank you for posting this!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
So complete and so well explained! Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words! And thank you for watching! You are very welcome!
Just fixed mine because of your video! Thanks so much!
Awesome! Glad this helped!
Thank you so much, you save me hundreds $$. The check valve was stuck for me and I clean it out. Works like a charm. Thanks Sir
Absolutely! Thank you for watching!
@@TDScotty first I swapped out the flow sensor, but still the same. The check valve is the culprit, I am so happy
I have the same unit. I guess everyone's went out at the same time. Thank you for this video it's a great help
Thank you. And it sure seems that way. I guess it's like the old saying "there must be something in the water" LOL... Thanks again!
Did u fix urs?
@@losttribe1993 yes I fixed it using this video. The part was free
Glad this helped! I’m still searching for my sanity. I can’t remember where I left it! Thanks for watching and glad you got your problem figured out!
Excellent video and I am fairly certain this is our issue. Thank you so much!
Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
Thank you! This helped me repair my Navien quickly and I found that the old valve was broken in two pieces inside.
You are welcome. I’m glad this helped!
Thank you! I appreciate your good information.
Thank you for watching!
Dont ever take this down
Excellent. 100% spot on
Thanks so much!!! Great info!
Thank YOU for watching!
Perfect! Thank you!
You betcha!
Hi you mentioned to shut off switch number 1 or is it all of them I wasn't very clear on that thanks for your help
Thank you for a great video and saving us the $420 it would have cost to have someone else fix it
Thank you for watching and I’m very glad it helped!
Do they recommend this replacement annually with a descaling or just as needed?
To the best of my knowledge it is just as needed. Although, many folks like to remove the check valve when they do their descaling just to inspect it.
So helpful!
Thank you kindly!
Great info.
You’re a fucking life saver thank you sir
Haha! Thank you! Glad this helped!
Navien has notorious name of bad check valve. Owner has high chance to get it! Defective design
Navien will only work with a licensed plumber. You don' have recirc plumbing so you should leave it 6 o'clock, 1off 2 on
Navien worked with me, but they certainly don't work with everyone.
Actually I didn't change the switch position so looks like I caused the pump issue.
