I remember when I was a kid in the anime they used to ride inside the Zoids... Using them as mounts seems pretty dangerous..
Haha loads of people have said that Caleb, I did have to suspend believe a little with the way in which they were fighting in the game knowing that there was supposedly someone riding them.

this is apparently how zoids started out in lore. Originally biomechanical, they were first tamed by colonizing humans who arrived to planet z from earth. At first they rode these creatures as mounts like how we see in wild, but overtime these humans built canopies for safety which is reflected in the newest line showing the new Zoids models with enclosed canopies, until eventually becoming how zoids originally looked in the 90s and 2000s.

The gamecube zoids game is still the goat, there were a few cool rare ones on Xbox 360 and ps2 aswell, zoids is so underrated
I never played any other than this one, I think I was born in the wrong country as I don't remember seeing it on TV when I was young.
The GameCube one will forever be one of my all time favorite games.
Zoids Vs. 3 was awesome i must've scored more hours playing that than any other game cube title.

One of the main reasons I got a Japanese Wii was so I could play Zoids Vs. III, those games are so friggin fun
After watching some of the 1st episode, i can safely say i prefer the other versions of zoids like New Century and Chaotic century. Just don't like that the rider is visible and prefer the antags of those other 2. I remember fuzors being pretty cool, too.
Yea the riding of the zoids seems to be the biggest issue people have with this game lol, with any luck they will stick them inside in future games
If they release a dlc that allows you to play as characters from the Chaotic or New Century that would be cool. Picked it up I like the game play really wish we in the west got something like this in the 2000's when Chaotic Century was out. Would love to play as Raven manning his Genosaur and the wild blast could have it transforming into geno breaker.

This is on sale for $20 today at gamestop, so here I am checking a review. But yeah, those series were my childhood man... I get so nostalgic just thinking about it. I never had any of the nintendo consoles so I missed out on literally all of the Zoids games. Guess I'm spending money today!

Calling it now Bit and the Blitz Team if they were in Zoids: Wild they'd be a noble Hunter team like Team Freedom, and Team Supreme aka a Hunter Team that travel around with their Zoids, protecting innocent settlements from attacking wild Zoids, and wild Zoids from villainous poachers.
It looks fun, but it's dumb that the pilot is visible. He's supposed to be secured in the cockpit.

I ended up getting the game. It gets old fast. No customisations or anything.
Yea I think that having some sort of reward for working through the story other than alt colours and unlocking additional characters would have given the game more longevity.
@@SwitchStars Zoids has so much potential. If would be better if you could just choose a basic Zoid and compete in tournaments and work your way up. Earning cash buying new parts or Zoids. Even be a mercenary perhaps in an open world story. But at the very minimum the tournament with cash upgrades. So much potential.
I loved zoids as a kid! Saw it on toonami back in the day
I grew up watching things like Dexters Lab, Two Stupid Dogs, Ren and Stimpy, Johnny Bravo and Pokemon, I dont think we had Toonami in England.
For those asking about why they ride the Zoids like mounts in Zoids: Wild instead of inside a cockpit, it's because Zoids: Wild is more or less based on the canon made for the original models/figures that came out in Japan in the 80s which had said canon describe the Zoids as sentient bio-mechanical animals that when tamed were ridden like mounts and were used for various things including battles.
Now Zoids: Wild expands on this OG Canon with the concept of Zoid Hunters basically you have Hunter teams like Team Freedom led by Zoids: Wild's main hero Arashi, and Team Supreme led by Quade/Bacon who act like game-wardens and travel around the world with their Zoid partners protecting innocent settlements from attacking Wild Zoids, and Wild Zoids from poachers who see Zoids as nothing more then weapons, and tools along with having the belief that Zoids like any wild animal deserve their respect, along with the idea of you leave them alone they'll leave you alone, on the flipside you poacher groups like Emperor Gigaboss/Gallagher and his Dark/Death Metal Empire who believe Zoids are nothing more then tools, and weapons with no rights and go around capturing wild Zoids and then use various inhumane methods to completely strip them of their free will and turn them into emotionless weaponized mechs.
If there was a way to petition for an online feature to this game, I'd do everything in my power to sign it three times. The 3/5 is a very fair rating, considering that the combo mechanic in this game is easy for almost anyone to pick up, but hard to retain interest to those familiar with fighting games like myself.
The nostalgic feel and yearning for a zoids item to have as my own is what interested me in buying the game anyways, and I have no regrets...if only there was online... T^T
Yea it's unlikely they would add it now the game has shipped, probably on to the next big title for them 😔 I never got into zoids when I was younger, if it wasn't on cartoon network or nickelodeon then there's no chance Id have seen it lol.

They really need to make a zoids open world rpg where we can make and customise our own zoids for mass battles
When I first heard about this game i was hoping it was gonna button a top down action story game where u went thru the stages and fought random bad guys then fought each bad guy at the end almost like ur going thru the actual series . But I'm happy to see it turned out ok.
Yea this is the first I've heard of the series and no doubt fans may be a little upset regarding its genre and mechanics, but in all I think they did a good job with the game, it's pretty solid.
i fell in love with the Gamecube Game it was fun you could go and roam around
this new game looks like a Budokai tenkaichi 3 mod
This is the first of the series I've played Angel, I didn't think it was too bad but I don't think many fans were happy with how it turned out.

The joke with (self assembly) Zoids in the eighties was, the kid asks for it, can't assemble it, cries and asks an adult to do it.

Yea I never actually knew about them, by the time I was playing with toys it was all action men, johnny quest and biker mice from mars lol, we didn't have to assemble anything.
I actually took pride I could do it myself but I didn’t have many. I have one today but the box is beat up. One day I’ll put it together
I briefly played one of the GBA games and it felt like a watered down front mission with minor rpg elements. That could have been great. This, just looks like the shonen fighters which have never been good.
I also recall the zoids being bigger with the pilots being inside. Little kids riding robot dinosaurs doesnt seem as cool.
Yea I never played any of them before this, the gundam style mechs does sound a lot better though.
You're talking about Zoids: Legacy I had that for my GBA and DS it had a real cool time-travel plot that saw the main character team up and interact with the heroes, and heroines from both the Chaotic Century timeline, and New Century Zero timeline so we had dream meetings like Van and Bit, Irvine, and Brad actually happen.

Awesome review, as always. I was waiting for the "this is a port of a phone game" due to the visuals and huge menu buttons near the beginning of the video. Was surprised not to see it looks like a fun game but dang that price tag seems high to me. It might be because I have never heard of the franchise before, or because I dont play fighters often, but I would have expected its price to bi in the $20 zone. Gonna have to make a hard pass on this due to price alone. That said, your review did make me consider trying the game out if it were not so expensive.
Yea I think it's mainly designed to appeal to children. It was a fun game with some surprisingly deep combat mechanics but I agree the price point is way too high for people who aren't fans of the franchise and its difficulty doesn't really have adults in mind.
I used to build zoids as a kid and build them and gundams now as an adult. Never played a game of it tho

Very interesting looking game. It isn't for me, but it is cool to see the decent job the developer did.
Yea I think it may be more worthwhile for those that have younger kids who watch the series, but I still appreciated how good the Zoids looked.

I believe certain games are meant for certain ages. I notice a lot of us Adults don’t care for this game however my 7 yr old son loves it. And I’m okay with that. 👍
I was a babe into zoids it was a big part of my younger childhood... i thought they just canceled out, but originally seeing this few years back makes me wonder how they went from full mechs and literal wars to these strange half mechs where the pilots are exposed on top of the now way smaller zoids fighting what seems like lil gang wars... what happened? The original zoids in all aspects were way cooler like Gundams and should have never been tempered with.
I hadn't heard of the series before this game, but it could be to do with the whole thing of giving the Zoids a personality and life of their own, like Pokemon, instead of them just being robots. Probably sells better that way would be my guess.
@@SwitchStars Zoids was deep they did have personality some way more than others... I'm guessing it was all an attempt to make everything more Kid friendly. They don't want todays kids with real military/artillery war in mind...
If you could ever play the proper zoid videogame you should. "ZOID battle Legends" for the gamecube was the coolest experience and the only proper ZOIDs videogame. I think they came out with a strategy game around 2011 err somefing but i don't think they ever came close to how cool Battle Legends was. Where you could customize equipment and buy your own ZOIDS. The zoid roster was far more robust then this game.
Yea you're probably right, the quality of games in a franchise seems to really fluctuate based on who is developing it and who knows best how to deliver the source material in an enjoyable way. There have been some pretty hit and miss games over the years set in the same worlds and this has been the key difference.

God, such a mega underrated game, it didn't get the love it deserved! Sure, far from perfect, I can agree it should've added more gameplay modes and online play. Still, it looked beautiful, it had amazing gameplay, it deserves more than to be completely forgotten!
What if we try to compare it to jump Force?
I think it's quite different tbh, combat is slower, you don't have multiple characters and its aimed at a younger audience.

Yea I had never heard of it before this game foody, whereas I have seen Gundam plenty of times.
I'm surprised there hasn't been a Zoids anime in the same vein as the Gundam Build Fighters anime cause I think that might actually do well especially since each Zoids series seems to be set in it's own timeline.
I want them come out with zoids open world make your character and you find pieces to build your own zoid any way you want make your look like others or have your own one of a kind cause you made it no one online would have it cause you make it
I have about 300 hours in my copy of Zoids Battle Legends, was kinda hoping for more of that.
Never played that one but someone mentioned it was pretty good.

I had a Zoids game when I was younger and loved it. Got into some of the animes a little bit after that. So when I heard the Switch was getting a Zoids game I was super excited, but this game lacks the most important thing to me- multiplayer. I'm long distance with my boyfriend right now and would want to play this with him, but since I can't, I'm not getting it. But even more than that is that the pilots are outside of the zoids... fucking why. Honestly this bothers me even more- it makes no sense and I'm sure it was harder to animate them than to just fucking not? Disappointing
Yea there have been quite a few people upset about both of those issues, I hear there's a new game in production though so let's hope it turns out better.

I wasn't aware of the new zoids anime so I was hoping it would be more of a love letter to zoid fans instead of it being shovelware. While I'm happy this review makes it seem this is a step up from shovelware. It seems original zoid fans are not demographic but instead they are trying to get new fans instead :/
Yea I know nothing about the zoids franchise apart from what I learned when researching for the video but it does seem that this is a new direction for them. I could see plenty of fans being unhappy with it though.
@@SwitchStars i watched the original anime as a kid when it was on tv before school.
And there has been some really underrated games based around the franchise, but as a niche franchise its never been financially successful, some of the games didn't even get localised, and it's a shame as the concept has potential for a game.
Heck just give my a dynasty warriors type game.
@@winnkey Yea it was probably overshadowed by the likes of digimon and pokemon. Maybe the future will hold more for it, but its been around since the early 80s so I'm not too sure.
@@SwitchStars na not a chance. The original series was actually a well made anime. It was clear they were almost trying to copy gundam a model based toy with a rich world and narative story.
And every series after that have been trying to appeal to a broader and younger audience. Losing what originally made it a good franchise.
The original run was also when there was the push for the models in the West. there was actual marketing and all that jazz.
It is very clear they don't have the budget for that. Specially with the new series zoids wild just getting a streaming release out side of Asia.
I will treasure the original run but I accept the marketing cash grab it has become.
Yea I think that seems to be the case a lot of times, I think cartoons have slowly transitioned towards a more sensored and soft approach, I think the original Japanese anime series were a lot more diverse in the subjects they covered and didn't shy away from some harsher topics. Now you don't get any of that until you get to more teenage anime, I remember watching the Guyver anime when I was about 10 and thinking it was awesome.
Finally a decent looking Zoids game. I'll be picking this up even though I'm not a fan of the childishness of it. Hope we get a game set in the more gritty anime of the season that came out in 2000s. Also just hope for more zoids games in general.
Yea I thought the visuals were decent Vander, I prefer darker tones in games but It wasn't bad and had some good humour in its storyline. Fans have been waiting a few years for this so might be waiting a while for the next one too.
Japan has a game that either just launched or will be launching on the Switch based on the more grittier version of Zoids so hopefully they localize that to the West!

@@vanders4198 I do it's called Zoids Wild Zero: Infinity Blast, and actually has a couple of Zoids from Chaotic Century, New Century Zero, and Fuzors as unlockable Zoids.

I don't know the Zoids franchise but it seems really cool I mean pre Historic robots fighting each other is awesome but I think it needed a few upgrades to make it worth that price
Yea It's priced quite highly, I assume mainly because its a franchise and licensed game, there are probably a bunch of fans who have been waiting for a new Zoids game to release and it may be worth the cost to them.
I'd consider giving it a pop at half price, where are these amazing gamer kids my gal is propa pants @any game u throw at her! She won't even sit & complete a level of a game unless u sho her. With my elp she mus have 150 on switch. She won't believe I used to wait an hr for a tape to load on c64 jus to be stuck on same level for days what with their difficulty, if it didn't crash!
Hahaha well you got to start them young and have some patience Ryan, Rome wasn't built in a day 😂 Yea they think the c64 loading times are an exaggeration, I say buy one on the cheap and get them to sit through a whole loading of dizzy the egg 😭

I really liked Zoids when I was a youngster
First I've heard of them, it seems like there have been so many toys and related tv series throughout the years that have come and gone.
I had some episodes or movie on vhs i don’t remember it that much but I loved it I had the toys n all that
I'm more of a fan of the seasons where they pilot the zoids instead of riding them. But this was my childhood for sure
Oh and before you build u can find a beat down one use it collect parts for it as you gain money from battles and doing missions and odd jobs buy parts and can buy blueprints of already known zoids to build u also can just buy one already built I would build my own unique zoids you can have 100 zoids but you have to buy land to build house and next it a building you build and have a room that is dark turn on the light your room where zoid goes in it. Building gets taller more zoids more floors customize building how u like it look in and out. The house is yours if want make your own guild the house gets bigger till more people u get and so make sure it doesn't lagged or crash yes cause you are leaders your building get huge your design members have their own room make it theirs and they buy land not to close to yours for their zoids. Now any zoids you own you can take parts from them n help build your own and fix others or sell parts or after build your unique zoids sell them if you want

Personally i loved the game, i am a huge Zoids fans been following the series since its resurgence in the early 2000s 2004/5 but i knew about them since the 90s, you're in england, search Zoids2 and the original Zoids line from the 80s those came out in Europe, i bought a bunch back in the day here in Portugal.
Heres the thing, the concept behind ridable Zoids is not new, in fact that exists since the beginning. When Zoids first evolved on Zi, before they were turned into giant war machines they were used in labor like farm animals or kept as pets that came after, when the zoidian tribes began clashing with each other and a colony ship from earth the Globally 3 crashed landed on Zi. So this concept although strange to some is actually pretty neat because it gave Zoids personalities. To a lot of people only Zoids like the Liger Zero displayed personalities and had a mind of its own the truth is that every zoid was like that except some were more submissive than others.
As for the game i got it recently and i really enjoy it. Its simple but the animation really captures their gracefulness and attitude,i wish they wouldn't slide on the ground when running and turning that's really the only thing i dont really feel with it. The previous Zoida title these guys developed was Full Meta Crash i believe and that was totally different i suggest you take a lot at that one to see where this one comes from.
Yea i grew up on things like Power Rangers, Pokemon and other things like that, none of the channels I watched had Zoids on them. Having no knowledge of the previous titles and series the riding on top of them didn't bother me, and overall I thought it was a simple but decent fighting game.
@@SwitchStars yeah, i felt the same. it:s pretty decent, i recently ordered the sequel, its in japanese but it features a larger roster, about 30 or something and even some classic Zoids.
Well to give you a little run down on the shows as i have watched them all, there was an anime on toonami in 1999/2000, it actually beat Pokemon at one point in popularity, but i believe the only European country to air it was Italy, there are a bunch now from Chaotic century, Fuzors, Genesis, to the latest Zoids wild, the only series that follows the lore although loosely is Chaotic Century, it features characters and some plot points but it also changes a lot of things. A lot of people like New Century Zero, i think its fun to watch but its about battles as a sport and has absolutely no connection to the lore.

I thought it was decent forever, it's a little pricy but not a bad fighting game.
You do one player or you can play online people running everywhere you get lot of city's small villages and country's if you got flying zoids fly everywhere land you build or buy your own boat I got tons of ideas for this and lot of games
Yea there is a lot of potential to build on the Zoids World, Its just going to take a good developer to work on it.
Seeing the "pilots" riding on top seems so goofy. Why didnt they keep the cockpits like normal zoids?
No idea Cayde, TBH you don't really notice them in general combat, only really on intro/outros, when activating wild blast mode and performing your special abilities.
Yea it makes no sense they would've been killed almost immediately. My guess is that they want to compete with Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter Riders/Ride On. Riders was actually super fun on 3DS like a Pokemon, Monster Hunter Game where you can ride them. I guess Zoids copied from that.

Because that's how zoids were originally before they altered the zoid core and gave then cockpits to protect the pilot. It makes more sense because the zoids dont actually have guns in wild
On a separate topic, I'm glad this game is a good game and not some dog**** shovelware garbage meant to keep a dying brand alive.

I never watched this, power rangers and Pokemon where the big shows on TV when I was growing up and I remember watching the first Pokemon movie at the Cinema lol

@@Ookami20 Nah I didn't get a case for it but its in good condition, they aren't worth much though. My Final Fantasy TCG Promo Cloud Strife on the other hand appears to be growing in price year after year so that one is stored in a case lol
I'm old. It's official. I was 10 when Zoids first came out in Europe and the U.S. (Trivia: Zoids were Japanese, but they came out in Europe and the U.S. first, in 1982, and then in Japan in 1983. They were the follow-up to a Japan and Spain only product called Mechabonica, which didn't do well, and was cancelled quickly, but sneakily, TOMY used repackaged Mechabonica toys as the first wave Zoid release, then created new toys for wave two).
I loved building them, and loved that they were powered toys, though I preferred the clockwork ones to the battery-powered ones.
Is Spiderzoid in this game? I ask, as SPideroid was my favourite of the original Zoids AND it was used in "Zoids: The Battle Begins", the first Zoids computer game, which I had on my Commodore 64 back in 1986!
Haha, I use to play with action men and turtles toys, wasn't born until 85. I did read about them coming out in the US first, thought it was pretty strange, I didn't realise that they were powered. @@SwitchStars Yeah, the little ones had a small clockwork windup thing that you put in the middle as you built them, but the big ones, like Zoidzilla (it was called Gojulas in Japan) had a battery-powered motor.
I also remember having an issue of the Spider-Man an d Zoids comic, which was UK-only.
25 seems like an accurate and fair price. Probably not 40 though. This game looks cool and I am a fan of Zoids in general from when I was a kid. I appreciate you taking the time to honestly review this. If it ever drops to 25 bucks, I'll be willing to give it a shot.

Yea, that game looks more like a Pokemon battler to me, not really seen much of it.
I'll probably bust out my wallet and buy this game for the kiddos just because I like zoids in general. So much nostalgia from back in the day. Plus busting out the gamecube and even if I were to pop in zoids battle legends it's just not to their Fortnite standards

OK Zoids has definitely changed since I was a teenager. I don't remember them riding ON the Zoids, I always thought they rode inside them like mechs. Also the character designs...they're just so bad. Not to my taste at all.
Yea I haven't really seen the previous iterations of Zoids so I can't really comment on it lol, I assume they are trying to bridge that gap between digimon and gundam.
It's how zoids were before they were altered the zoid core to have cockpits.
I personally prefer the zoids franchise with the cockpits so the pilots won't get hit by any attacks

I can't believe I am seeing people complaining about this game being $40 when a switch title is usually $60. People are just so damn cheap. Look, if you want to try it, buy it and support the franchise. $40 is not that much in comparison to a normal switch game price
No I don't agree with this, yes a first party Nintendo title usually costs $60, but most indie titles are generally cheaper and while I thought the game was a decent fighter, albeit one made for kids, I cannot say that I think it is worth the full asking price unless you are a fan of the franchise.
@@SwitchStars This isn't an indie title. It's a 3rd party title. You may want to learn the difference between 1st party releases, 3rd party releases, and indie releases.
The game was developed by Codeglue who are an independent Dutch developer? I take it as though anything not first party would be classed as an independent title.

My understanding is that "indie" (independent) means the game lacks a separate publishing company so the developing company has to do all of the publishing work, even when that simply means releasing the title on large distribution platforms like Steam.
I think people have different understandings of what indie means, the term is a little more broadbrush now, Its my understanding that if the developer doesn't receive support from the publisher then it's and indie game, without knowing if outright games did anything but publish the game for them such as financial support the I can't say for sure.

They downgraded it quite a bit with the stupid re-names of the Zoids and removing Wild Blue insert song for Wild Blast
From what I understand they also re-named the bad guys from Death Metal Empire to Dark Metal Empire.

Probably because of the connotations of the word Death, In Japan its used quite liberally and I don't think they view it in such a negative light.
This is a fun game, yes the whole having the person riding on top of a zoid is distracting and dumb, it still a fun game I mean at least we got a zoids game in the current year.
However, I still don't understand why in today's world of advanced hardware we still don't have a Zoids game that has the pilot in the cockpit, and see from the cockpit's point of view?
Yea I don't know, I think the cockpit view might just turn it into more of a mech warrior type game where as they probably wanted to keep this one more of a traditional 3rd person fighter.
@@SwitchStars Maybe, again I don't really have a problem with this game, actually it's one of the fun Switch games I've played recently. I think my favorite characters in this game so far are Drake Ruin, and Apex and Alpha Shadow.
I like this game a little bit better than Zelda Age of Calamity, mostly because the fighting mechanics is a lot smoother in my opinion.

a poor attempt to re launch zoids, a Nintendo switch remaster of legacy and saga is the way to reboot this epic franchise
I think they're working on another zoids game but not entirely sure what it will be focusing on.
@@SwitchStars with any luck the graphics and technology from the switch mixed with the rpg and customisation elements from legacy/saga , then you can make 2 differant games one with pokemon style combat like legacy and saga and then another like the one they released on game cube

@@SwitchStars Zoids isn't known for good gamss but I will say my favorite was this rpg on the GBA where you would cross over between the various worlds such as the war world or the tournament world and collect parts and units to make a 6 Zoid squad along with your battleship. Hard as heck though.
Yea I saw they had made quite a number of different games, I use to like Digimon World 2, they did 2 of them on the PS1 and each was distinctly different, it seems like franchises like this experiment when it comes to gameplay genres.

@@dustybunny6716 Yea I was so confused with the first game and its breeding, 2nd was great though traveling around in the truck thing levelling up and evolving Digimon, I never played the third.
i really dont like what zoids has become. zoids battle legends and zoids legacy are still the best video game versions of the old anime.

This is the dumbest comment. It’s a fighting game in 2020 without online multiplayer. Even friggen super budget fighters like fight of gods has online. Even if it was barebones it would be worth it

I think the problem is with nintendos online community, nearly every new release that has had an online mode barely has players to join with, I'm assuming the devs saw this and decided It wasn't worth investing in for now.
@@SwitchStars Yup. I agree. Unless Nintendo makes online free, no online mode was the right choice for them.
I personally think you need to offer the option of online multiplayer if the title would clearly benefit from it, I think a lot of replayabiliy comes from online when it's done right and these days unfortunately it's where many gamers meet others
