she said a few times that that's the way she makes songs, mostly improvised, even the recent ones she's very authentic and that's why i love her so much
So the song "Carmen" by Lana is so haunting. It's about a tragic woman who's a star pretending to be happy. You should add it to your long list of songs to react to.
The way she sings hits me hard... Do you know when you're deeply willing to cry but you hold it and then your throat starts to hurt? That's the way I feel she sings.
Do you know that she used another song for musical inspiration/sample for this one? If not, check “what is a youth” from 1968 “Romeo and Juliette” movie by Italian film director Franco Dzefirelli (hope I spell his name right)
Lana is so deeply talented. I think she really deserves to be more recognized. She pull’s from her deep darkest depths of her pain and can just improvise this as if it were poetry to that she is able to help others with. She has been through so much pain and suffering and complete heartache, but it is also so relatable. I adore Mere for covering it, because I have been through things like that. It makes me feel that it’s okay to feel how I feel about it. I know I will definitely add it to my playlist and probably talk about it with my own therapist. ❤
Mere, you are just an angel. You were meant to do this…you are a healer. And some ppl are just meant to be therapists, psychologists,,psychiatrists…. Thank you! You have really made a true difference in my personal life. Thank you. I had a hysterectomy 2 yrs ago and have been struggling with various issues. Watching and listening to you makes me feel like I am really not alone. ❤
Thank you for sharing that comment, I can completely relate. I have health issues, endometriosis and a whole list of autoimmune. I have to have a hysterectomy before the end of the year. Dragonslayer by Lana is a song that was meant for Ultraviolence but didn’t make the final cut-it’s spiritual and actually somewhat hopeful and uplifting rather than sad
absolutely agree with you about the statement being addiction can be both a disease and a choice. Unfortunately the reality is, the ones who haven’t lived it themselves, thus understood it or depended on a loved one with an unhealthy addiction with no urge to change it will simply not understand. Things you’re saying are very true and I respect so much sticking to your guns. Keep doing what ur doing xx!
Hi, I'm Brazilian and I love to follow your reacts of the songs, I'm a big fan of your work, whenever I can I'll marathon your videos, I wish you every success! And that in the same way that your videos bring me joy can cheer up other people too❤
I prefer the framing of addiction as a choice rather than a disease because I feel like it being a choice means it's never too late to change your behavior, while framing it as a disease implies addiction is just in your nature and there's nothing you can do to change it.
Do you think people cant recover from diseases? 🤣People win battles with Cancer, Liver disease, STIs, Malaria every day. It is no different with substance abuse. About the song: you should definitely check any Lana's live performance of this one. She always sing it literraly lying on the floor. Her voice is really powerful but sad. About the reaction and meaning: always on point. I love you and I love your reactions and takes on Lana's lyrics. ps: and there's not a single video where you are not beautiful / good looking, even on that live reaction to kintsugi / fingertips

I think it's beautiful when someone is able to connect to their emotions, be vulnerable, and cry. (not talking about making someone cry and enjoying it, that's gross) I personally don't think ugly crying exists. I wish there wasn't so much shame around it and pressure to look happy all the time. People need to appreciate crying more, it feels really good when you're actually able to. Maybe that's just me coming from a family that "hated seeing me cry" so I repressed my feelings. I don't know. Could you please react to You'd Never Know by Blü Eyes? It is an incredible song about the healing process and loneliness. It describes how I feel and what I've been through better than anything I've ever heard. You may relate to it too, in a different way. She's not a very well known artist, but her songs are absolutely beautiful. She does a great job illustrating what it's like battling a mental illness. Just for yourself, I'd recommend listening to I Am Not Nothing by Beth Crowley. It's pretty powerful, think you might like it.
I really love Lana and I also love Mere's reactions, but sometimes it kinda hurt me the way Lana's songs seems to affect Mere, I hope she doesn't feel way too bad about it 😢
You’re such a positive energy + you’re very reassuring. I felt every nerve in my body undergo some quite visceral distress while listening to the song, as I was watching the video, after a long long time of not listening to Lana at all. Thank you so much for your work and your passion. 🩷
you should do more florence! maybe Delilah? but if you want something both empowering and dissectible i think “King” would be a great start. I’d also recommend “cassandra”, “dream girl evil”, “morning elvis”, and “the bomb” from her recent album (even if u just listen to them on your time and don’t necessarily react to them here)
Great job, as always. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on addiction. I agree with you. When you can, please do “Old Money,” which is one of my all time favorite songs from her.
this song creates an atmosphere of sadness and its a big big energy of everyone hearing.....like lana in Mexico City being a witch and making come weird charm at people during this performance!!!!! i was there and i feelt so overwhelmed for al the emotions i experienced
totally agree with you, it is a disease, and also a choice. and its so sad, cause you are waisting your time and heathness, instead of living a better life with the people who truly loves you, and will be 100% there for you to help and give you the support that you need. love for all of you, and remember that you can choose be better everyday ❤
I’m here with my shield to back you up against any haters. I appreciate your unwavering commitment to seeing addiction as a choice, every time(I believe I accurately understood). I feel this way, though I have no direct exposure, myself. This is a tough song. Lana has so many tough ones. She IS tough and beautiful. She makes the songs sound so beautiful every time, yet you know something isn’t right from the way it has that haunting cadence. Love the variation of content, as you find appropriate. Thank you! 🫶
god bless Mere for going through the Ultraviolence songs, they’re rough btw this album holds interesting stories, for example Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems was actually a demo for Ultraviolence, originally was a very dark song about being in an abusive relationship with an addict and contemplating suicide, then years after this song was remodeled and released on Lust for Life with Stevie Nicks, in the end the line “she wants to die and she should fucking try” became “beautiful problems, god knows we’ve got them, but we’ve gotta try, every day and night”, and i find this curve so beautifully meaningful
Think it’d be interesting for you to react to beautiful people beautiful problems - both demo (2014) and released (2017). Same song but so different and so much personal growth
i dunno why, but i personally believed that Lana used upbeat instrumentals to compare her no chances to talk 'cause of those instrumentals being her partner's abussive control. he doesn't let her talk, he dominates her brutally, making her believe she's the main problem. she just repeats to herself "i'm pretty when i cry" due to her current partner kinda say "you're prettier when you cry. that's the only thing you can do well." that's why i think this track is called "pretty when you cry" instead of "pretty when i cry." she emphasized on how he takes the control of it all, it also happens when the instrumentals in Shades of Cool grew higher. at some point, in the bridge, what she's sayin' is unintelligible. how spooky and torturing that is!
as an addict in recovery, working my program, it is definitely a choice. yes it is a life long disease but it has a life long solution as long as you chose to work it
Hey Mere, thank you so much for this amazing video and your insightful analysis! I always enjoy your takes, they're so deep and seem just so honest. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into this as well! Additionally, I'd like to request something I already saw someone else here comment because I think it'd be amazing to compare; "Beautiful People Beautiful Problems" and "Beautiful People Beautiful Problems (Demo)" by Lana. The demo was made way back, I think between 2013 - 2015, and then reworked into LFL in 2017 as a way brighter version. The demo is really, really sad, but not something we don't know from Lana yet lol, so it would fit in with the other Lana songs you've reacted to, especially this one. The contrast is just so beautiful, though, it's like a full circle moment because that sad song, purely sad, became a different sad song, but one full of acceptance and a brighter view of the world. I would LOVE to see you react to both and compare! I think you'd love the growth. Anyways, thank you again for this wonderful video and have a nice day
' I'm pretty when I cry " one of my favorite songs, especially for its live performances, but it gives an idea like "I'm pretty when I cry, but why doesn't he notice me, like a choice maybe to seek some attention,
This song reminds me of the man I loved the most, with whom I had the longest and most significant relationship. Everything applies to him except the drug part. But in my case, "I'm pretty when I cry" reminded me of him, because while we were together and happy (he treated me so kindly and sweetly), I was going through a dark phase as well, and sometimes I'd feel depressed and cry for things unrelated to him, and he would comfort me and then say: "I'm sorry, I know you are feeling sad, but I can't help but think you look so cute when you cry", and look at me with loving, compassionate eyes. Every time he said that, he would make me smile and laugh, and I'd feel better because I felt loved. Anyways, things change; we broke up, kept a long-distance sort of relationship for a long time, and when he finally moved on and changed how he treated me, when he became cold and indifferent, this became his song, but my connotation to "I'm pretty when I cry" was different than Lana's narrator, of course. To me, it made me think of those past sweet moments when he had my back. Fun fact about Lana performances of this song: she usually changes the part following "I don't really mind, I've got much more than that" to something positive, like along the lines of "like my copy rights and playing for this crowd."
i wonder what she meant with "I'm preatty when i cry" after saying all those strong things, Like maybe it means that she is pretty crying thats why he hurts her so much, Or maybe because she knows she is pretty crying she allows her self to be in this situations repeatedly, or the interpretention that i love the most, that the pretty is not like beeing pretty but she does pretty things out of hurt, out of crying, like the songs she write and sing, like turning a sad thing as crying in a spectacle to heal herself and help to heal someone going to similar stuff. I love this song.
First off, hello love I am also a dedicated subscriber since the beginning and I have been kindly insisting you do Sportscruiser from Lana’s poetry book, still insisting by it will heal you🤣💜💜 Secondly, I am a recovering addict almost at 5 years, you are very right addiction is both disease and choice. It’s not an easy thing to admit but it is 100% true. I could still be an addict but I CHOSE a hard choice and sought rehab and further help all on my own, that’s why I’m alive and a lot of my peers are not 🤷🏽 a sad tragic truth. Third, this song is a favorite. As others have said it is freestyled BUT I have not seen anyone else say, you are right about everything you said here. However, she has mentioned that this song is also meant to be an empowering song. If you think of it as the perspective as her telling YOU, YOU are pretty when you cry, and her say I’m pretty when I cry, shes saying it is ok to be sad though also, it is ok to cry. You are allowed to cry. A lot of people don’t want to cry and “look ugly” but screw that, you’re pretty when you cry, feel empowered to feel your feelings. Mere your correct in everything your saying but there is another view to take, and sometimes when I’m crying and like I should not be crying get it together, NO. IM PRETTY WHEN I CRYYY🤣💜 Love you. Waiting for sportscruiser. If I need to send money to bump it to the top of the cue, I will.🤣🤣💜
Ok, THIS!!! Firstly, congrats on 5 years. Sooo hard but you are doing it! Proud of you. I LOVE how you explained this, that it’s empowering bc who cares if you cry, you are pretty and to let the tears fall! ❤
i think pretty when you cry is about how you can hurt her as much as you want, but no one cares how bad she’s hurt bc she still looks pretty when she cries so she can’t mean it. even tho she is genuinely crying and can’t help it looking pretty to them
Mere, with your hair up and your lipstick and that color blouse, you look so beautiful. Prayers for your dad, he sounds amazing. Sugar is a real addiction too. I'm sorry this made you angry, I hope you're feeling better from it.
Ok so idk why people are mad at you about talking about drug issues when seriously, it is a choice. YOU have the choice to go to rehab to get better, YOU have the choice to change. NO ONE else does.
If you wanted to look any more into phoebe bridgers, I'd suggest the song "savior complex", which I think you'd have a lot of insight for and I think semi-implicitly references some addiction problems in its lyrics
if you get a chance, even though you are a swift oriented channel which i love, id love to hear you react to skinny, the greatest, and wildflower by billie eilish as well as the other songs from hit me hard and soft!!
I'm trying to beat my dependence (not addiction quite) to benzos but the anxiety disorder is kicking my ass without them and I've tried every medication almost. life is hard.
It is hard. Benzos are so tough and I understand how helpful it can be for anxiety, they are incredibly hard to get off of. I’m sending you so much love
She freestyled this song on vocals/lyrics and the guitarist freestyled with her on electric guitar. Nobody does it like her. This song is my anthem.

I think the diabetes example is a very apt one, people with diseases especially have choices and can make healthy ones. Thank you Mere
First off, hello love I am also a dedicated subscriber since the beginning and I have been kindly insisting you do Sportscruiser from Lana’s poetry book, still insisting by it will heal you🤣💜💜
Secondly, I am a recovering addict almost at 5 years, you are very right addiction is both disease and choice.
IM PRETTY WHEN I CRYYY🤣💜
Love you.
❤
this song is just heartbreaking 💔💔
Right on, Mere. Totally agree 100%.
To freestyle t h i s, to deliver such a powerful message literally on the spot, just like that... That's what Lana is about imho
Omg yessss finallly something from lanaaaa
Saw the thumbnail and jumped
please react '' the other woman '' by lana, love u
i think pretty when you cry is about how you can hurt her as much as you want, but no one cares how bad she’s hurt bc she still looks pretty when she cries so she can’t mean it. even tho she is genuinely crying and can’t help it looking pretty to them
you always go for the toughest ones 😂😭
Mere, with your hair up and your lipstick and that color blouse, you look so beautiful. Prayers for your dad, he sounds amazing. Sugar is a real addiction too. I'm sorry this made you angry, I hope you're feeling better from it.
Ok so idk why people are mad at you about talking about drug issues when seriously, it is a choice. YOU have the choice to go to rehab to get better, YOU have the choice to change. NO ONE else does.
I completely agree! People get upset bc they believe it should only be looked at as a disease
My heart stopped for a sec
You have to react to "God knows I tried" from Lana, in my opinion is one of the most beautiful songs from her!
Arcadia by Lana is so good and not to sad
Mere you need to react to Burning Desire By Lana!!!❤❤
REACT TO SAD GIRL
oh my gosh yeah she should
YES
Hi Mere! Have you reacted to Lana’s “Yosemite”? It’s one of my favorites
please react to put me in a movie!!!! that song is completely dark and touch very fragile themes
yes she needs to do this one!
Lol yess
If you wanted to look any more into phoebe bridgers, I'd suggest the song "savior complex", which I think you'd have a lot of insight for and I think semi-implicitly references some addiction problems in its lyrics
Please do Two people from Gracia Abrams! I love your videos
REACT TO OLD MONEY PLS😍
This whole song was freestyled btw 🙈
if you get a chance, even though you are a swift oriented channel which i love, id love to hear you react to skinny, the greatest, and wildflower by billie eilish as well as the other songs from hit me hard and soft!!
Addiction is a result of terrible choices. You don't need medication for that, you just have to have the will to stop 🙁
pls do Beautiful people beutiful problems
I'm trying to beat my dependence (not addiction quite) to benzos but the anxiety disorder is kicking my ass without them and I've tried every medication almost. life is hard.
It is hard. Benzos are so tough and I understand how helpful it can be for anxiety, they are incredibly hard to get off of. I’m sending you so much love
Please do “the greatest” next
