  • Here's how you can make a form box to make a silicone mold for a good sized concrete planter. Use cheap, easy-to-find materials to make the mold form. This is how you can make copies if objects from your home to use as molds for your planters or any other concrete items.

    Thanks for this, just planning a bowl mould. Clay is good for sealing too, and reuseable unlike glue and caulk.

    I plan to use a core to fill most of the hollow in the pot, lots less silicone and much easier to demould, just a bit trickier due to the core needing to be suspended above the pot.

      Hi, yes, I've used oil based clay before, but wasn't sure it would be strong enough for this since it was so heavy. I also considered adding a foam core, but didn't want to have to figure out how to suspend it. But it's definitely a money saver.

      @@ArtsyPrettyPlants I've found a 3D printer to be really helpful with making mould boxes, suspensions for cores and things like that.

    Do you have any tips on how to make a large sphere silicon mold for cement pots?

    • @ArtsyPrettyPlants
      @ArtsyPrettyPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll either have to do a 2 part mold with the type of silicone I used here- linked in the description, or use a really flexible silicone like in this tutorial where I made a small sphere, but with an opening at the top. artsyprettyplants.com/silicone-sphere-mold/
      I'm not completely sure you'd be able to make it in one piece and have the cement release, even with this flexible mold. the customer service at Alumilite is quite good, so I'd ask them.

    Would it make sense to make a box for the mold to go in for strength, and cut the actual mold down one side as well to make it easier to remove the planter from the mold?

    • @artsyprettycolors
      @artsyprettycolors 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, you can do that, but you will get a line mark on the concrete where the cut is and usually sanding won't remove it. But, just don't use rubbing alcohol to clean the glass like I did because that made it much harder to remove. It will be much easier than it was for me if you don't do that.

    • @devoncarter9062
      @devoncarter9062 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@artsyprettycolors On cost benefit analysis, if you make a mother mold out of less expensive material to support a thinner silicone mold and only cut through it for rejoining you can avoid the line mark and speed up your extraction.

    Can the silicone be coloured?

    • @ArtsyPrettyPlants
      @ArtsyPrettyPlants  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure. I would be hesitant to mess with the ingredients because the silicone may not cure properly. You may want to contact the manufacturer- Alumilite.

      Look Superman, for DIY it’s hard to make larger silicone molds due to recourses. So yes, for a DIY concrette/silicone planter, it is a large planter.
