7 Years, and still likely to be finished faster then Binky.

      What I came to say.
No matter how long it takes, you can be confident that it's faster than Project Binky (which I also love).

Apparently they are making a custom tac and Speedo for it and fell into sone weird time warp and are now going to produce them when they are done or something

I can't think of another TH-cam channel, let alone an engineer/car channel, which demands you to watch every frame. Sumptuous, cinematic excellence (and although I'm a software engineer, I do work for a 6 time Oscar winning VFX company). The Merc resto compilation is an extraordinary work of art and should be shown much more widely in other media and venues.

i've been watching some car builds at this point for 6 years. a guy rebuilding a Triumph GT6R, but its 100% custom LS engine, custom everything really. and he's building it with bis pops in basically a small 1 car shed, with basic hand tools no less.
then binky finished what, a year or so ago, honestly that one sorta hurt to watch it finish. miss it.
then you rebuilding this lotus which im not even a lotus guy, but i LOVE the way you present it with the stop motion, time and dedication to it. plus all the cool builds along the way... and honestly if you had a 2nd channel where you just read children's books with that buttery smooth voice of yours i would listen to every freaking one...
but word man keep the builds up and im glad to have been able to watch you

Great project George, a little bit of advice if i may, if youre going to use the car through the winter i might be wise to consider painting the stainless trailing arms, salt and stainless do not play well together. Im restoring a suffix B range rover and your channel gives me motivation to keep going with it, even after i find more rust, and more rust, and yet more rust.
    Keep up the good work.

And once getting to the electroplating process it gave me an excuse to share that i guess ill be taking advantage of this process and idea you mentioned and shared for my project. Always loved watching your therapeutic videos especially for the process of doing as much of everything on your own. Cheers!

4:05 another answer is cold blueing! I experienced the same agony of indecision when it came time to bolt clean stuff back onto my '87 saab 9000. Works wonderfully. I use it mildly diluted into a small bucket so parts can soak in it rather than being applied with a cloth or brush. I can get a rusty fastener off the car, wire-wheeled, cleaned, blued, and back on in less than 10mins now.
Of course, more time in yields better results, firstly a couple of rounds of the blueing-washing-drying cycle means a thicker and more even coating of the new oxide layer. Secondly, curing in oil overnight really toughens the coating up. No need for any fancy oils, I just have a curing bucket with some motor oil from one of the service interval oil changes that came out nice and clean.
    To success!

I finally came up with a name for this style of video: Auto Build Journalism. By including all the mistakes it is like old school reporting where the news worthy points of interest are centered on mishaps or missteps. You are gonzo reporting on the ups and downs of a car restoration. All that is needed is some kind of drug fueled hotel scene where we hear you wax on about the wave that broke in the west sometime during the Nixon administration...but I also admire a subtle Simpsons reference right out of the gate....monorail monorail monorail!
    Cheers!

Love the videos and all your work George. It doesn't matter how long it takes, it's what you get out of it. I am 72 now and have coincidentally been working on my project for about 7 years. I am not very well now a lot of the time, and find I am forcing myself to try and get it finished before my health gives out. Consequently, a lot of the time I am not enjoying it, which is not how it should be. On the subject of the electroplating, I bought a lot of new fasteners from BMW for my car, they are zinc plated from the factory. It has been dry garaged all the 7 years and has not moved, and some are already rusting. As someone says, A2 stainless is the way to go if the tensile strength rating is suitable, otherwise I think all steel hardware will rust whatever you do to it unfortunately.

Will you be fitting spring pads between spring and spring base on the lower control arm? If none are available, you could make your own from HDPE (the stuff ski and snowboard base is made out of) by cutting the shape out of HDPE sheet, fit to spring collar, heat it up till it gets soft and then put the spring on top of it and push down to get the correct shape.
    I enjoy your videos tremendously!
