i appreciate that you took notice. I can only blame gameranger because it was the only thing that could have caused it at that point. Its always possible a backround script somewhere on my pc caused the virus. As for my firewall i had AVG 8. Its never failed me like this before soo...
lol, IG zones shut down for star wars like 3 years ago. It WAS the main source of attention, they had plenty of players, tournements, contests, etc. but now, the games pretty much lost its community and fanbase. the zone whas replaced by a website called voobly, but guess what? NOBODY PLAYS ON VOOBLY. I mean 0 people practically. If anyone wants to play multiplayer, they should use gameranger. It acually works pretty well, its better than voobly or Xfire
I know this is a little late, but I'm actually having the same problems. Are you playing on a small screen? Because the ratio that fits it has less colors than normal, so that might have something to do with it. As for the confusing faction colors, I would recommend going to the "Options" menu, and turning on "Friend or Foe colors", so that all factions are color-coded (player is blue, allies are yellow, neutrals are gray, and enemies are red).
lol here's one for ya, a friend of mine about a week ago tried gameranger and got the exact same virus i got. apparently the virus was a registry edit that removed the ability to run an .EXE program.
second of all, i apologize for the virus :P but man, there are hundreds of people who use gameranger, never heard of it giving them a crippling virus, i dunno what went wrong with yours :( i assume you're using firewall and all that stuff? anyway, i don't see how GAMERANGER caused a crippling virus, but i assure you, more goes on at gameranger nowdays than voobly (at least starwars related)
@TheWomacker you can donwload a fixer for color on w7. It fixes the .exe of every old game that has color problems. Age 2, Starcraft1, and so on. I can send to you e-mail, if you want.

i remeber this was such a great game of its time. of course now i mean, its kind of horrible. but it did use to be great.
