remember looking at the graphics of these cutscenes and hoping normal video game graphics would be like that one day... wow... look how far we have come...
My family was rather poor when I was a kid. The only electronics we had for entertainment was a slow Packard Bell computer running Windows 95 and a television set that would fuzz out at random. We had a few games for the PC, including Corsairs: Conquest at Sea, Combat Flight Simulator, and of course Age of Empires. When I was four years old, I played Age of Empires for the first time, and I was instantly hooked. It was the only game I would play on a daily basis for years to come. When I was six, my father acquired a new job with much better pay. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings has been out for about a year, and my parents finally had enough money to buy me a new game. They surprised me one day with Age of Empires II, which immediately became my new favorite game with thousands of hours spent playing it. My family didn't have very much money back then, but I was happy with the little we had. Age of Empires I & II were games to explore my massive imagination. I never got into AOE3, though, and sometimes I wonder if I'm missing out on anything.
Check AoE III out if you can. It is not that history-ish anymore (i.e., it still deals with the history of the world at large, but the individuals it depicts are most likely written from the scratch, they are not actual historical figures), focuses on the Age of Discovery and early industrial revolution (so you can probably expect some wigs, rifles, pirates and native americans), but still manages to keep the spirit of the first two games.
man, the age of empire graphic is just blew me of even in these time. its graphic were like it were game that released later. the water were even have the same quality as crysis in 2007
It has a meaning of all that. The two kings in the chess table mean they once were friends to each other and suddenly they start to figth. They escalate the conflict until the last were one king (or both) was killed. the lonley soldier at the end holding that king chess piece mean that he really loves the kingdom and it's ruler following to death. When he drop the king of his hands mean that he fail to protect the king and there is nothing left. Only death and destruction at the end.
Buğra Alparslan Well there was no age gaps for Kings. In medieval times in some regions you could become King at age 15 or at age 35-40 (If your father don't die and manage to go a healty life). Younger Kings were usually more dangerous than older Kings.
DemonicGoat I was just a little kid when I played this game :) I was 3 when I played the original then was arround 6 when I first played this if I remember correctly

@@saifrazorvenus2967 lol yes! When I was a kid I was so amazed by chess because of this game, my father loved to play chess and he bought one for us to play almost every day after doing my homework! Still love chess and play whenever I find someone that does too.
Watching this makes one wonder and realize how priceless our memories are. We may not care how much money we had or how rich our parents were, but still hold unto those good memories with our friends, and our first impressions we had about our world and history mixed with these capturing ancient-themed music and images .. Let this be a reminder for each of us, not be blind of those things that really matter in our lives, and which will, one day, be our proof and contentment, and that we will look back and smile in peace knowing that we had a good life
This has to be one of the best intros ever How the pieces are animated in their heads and it slowly becomes the real thing, and in the end, the king piece is the symbol
Pure gold. I remember picking up this game from our local Fred Meyer. Still have a couple of the old Discs and bought the Conquerors expansion a couple of times so I could get friends to play as well. Such an amazing game and fond memories. THANK YOU!
my whole damn chillhood!.... i love AoE2, and have until today with 30 years a special place in my heart! thanks Ensemble Studios for this masterpiece!
The animation on this is truly incredible, just look at it on 2:15 that looks crazy accurate to a group of archers scrambling to get into position, and the charge made by the footmen would've been better if they had their shields up, but still an incredible sequence.
I remember as a kid having finally got a Aoe disk and invite one of my friends to come over to play together. I went to the bathroom and when I come back the disk is gone. He was the only person in the game room. I asked him and he said he knew nothing about it. After that the friendship is gone as well. That explains how popular the game was😂

Damaskox To be honest, I like the cut version better, but certain unshown scenes from this version (eg. the relic part, and the trebuchet falling apart) should have been shown in the conquerors intro.
Damaskox Ensemble studios always does this weird thing where their original games have a full intro sequence and the expansion packs have some weird cut version of the original. I'm not sure about aoe 3 but i know they did it for AOM and the first two AOEs
Not to mention the guy that drops the king peace, in the HD Addition that guy is actually wearing a crown which indicates the king is the only one left amidst the battlefield and ruins of what he once ruled.
First met you in 2002 on my very first PC with pentium 3 and of course no internet connection. Spent days and days trying to beat the campaigns. You are the only game I truly felt that I am achieving true victory. 18 years later I had to buy a gaming laptop just to install your DE and still enjoy every aspect of your game. If I have kids, once they grow up, you will be first game they ever play on a pc.
+Jack Murphy Also, given The Bishop, he also has the Relic in his possession. +Ben Angell That`s because his Trebuchet was his Pawn ... aka one of 2 main chess pieces (Pawns and Kings) you cannot replace once gone ;)
sometimes, you do not need to upgrade your man-at-arms / some unnecessary unit when in insane multiplayer matches, Trebuchet would tear down castles fast AF while at Imperial Age players tend to built castles
Wow I miss this intro. It’s literally it’s own short story with a great ending. I used to actually enjoy watching this before I played. I hope Age of Empires 4 has an intro this epic!
+GoldieMethrans That piece is dropped by the King that is playing the Black pieces himself ( check their faces, they are the same person), and he drops the white king piece, not his black king piece ( the siege was on the white king's castle; the white king is dead).
Miguel Alvim Oh, thank you for telling this, since really, until I saw the intro for AoE 2 HD where the "soldier" indeed appears as the King himself about a week ago, I always thought that he`s, well, a soldier. ^-^ Your answer is vastly appreciated.
Wasn't the siege on the "green" kings castle? since he placed a tower and it directly cuts to a castle, and when the white king moved on of his pieces the siege was shown... so i'm guessing the white king attacked the green but in the end lost (as shown in the end)
***** Really?! I wasn't talking about Age of Empires II, I was talking about the chess game the monarchs played (in response to GemueseBong's comment).
Yzacata yes you can buy it www.amazon.de/The-Isle-Lewis-Walnuss-Ahorn-Schachset/dp/B004UG0SFW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1397924297&sr=8-2&keywords=isle+of+lewis try this :)
War. War never changes. With each of them end either with the demise of the king and/or the entire empire ... and the soldiers + innocents pay the biggest prize. ;) Just my interpretation.
Chess pieces to aoe units (does not include unique units) Pawn: trebuchet, scout cavalier, militia Rook: castle, archer towers, walls and bombard towers Knight: Knight, light cavalier, every other stables units Bishop: Monk King: King, every MALE hero Queen: Joan of Arc, every FEMALE hero
This just came in my recommendations and holy crap my childhood memories hit me hard I remember seeing my brother play this game and me being a child not knowing what it was obviously it was a strategy game but he was playing through the campaigns and I just sat there blankly staring at the screen figuring out who Joan of Arc and all these other important people of history were. Recently I got back into age of empires 1 and soon thereafter I got 2 and suddenly all these real people actually made sense to me since I’ve already learned about them in history class and getting really invested into the game again I even battled my brother and of course got my ass whooped like 4 times I can’t wait for the new age of empires 2 remastered it looks so amazing and does the original game justice in terms of graphics
''[...]and, disappointingly though, most of the units' sprites are fromA ge of Empires itself.[...]'' Are you expecting to see CnC Tiberian Dawn sprites? What do you mean? x)
+Phoenix4646 I forgot to specify that it was sprites from the 1st AoE game. "Disappointingly" is probably an unfair use of word by me, since the developers likely had to use the old ones as stand-in before implementing their new sprites for the game.
+Kustin I had AoE II as a kid, and so far I remember it was the same exact intro, and I have played through the Jeanne d'Arc campaign, and there was also a map editor! I always thought this was the "normal" game..?
There are a few scenes that were deleted from the officially-distributed game intro. (The scene with the two guards in the tower, the one with the relic etc.)
I remember this, actually entirety of this. There was unofficial Polish version based on that build floating around in the late 90s-mid 00s. Unofficial = one guy with Russian accent voicing everything in a quite bored voice. Eventually got the retail version, though played that one as I didn't speak English well at that time.

Back when intros actually had a message. ...Most of the new games don't even have intros which is kind of dissapointing.
my wife left me during this intro, it still pains me to watch it
Did you try WOLOLO?
message? like "playing chess is actually killing people"?
More like 'was it worth it'
I hate how many of the newer games do not have an intro, but force you into a movie like intro that you play for an hour. Many recent games that seemed cool had such a drawn out, spoonfeeding into that I never played past the first few minutes.
Perhaps the only strategy game trailer that actually tried to get chess players to play the game
actually they did it
I'm chess player I miss the game at every time I play chess
@@saifrazorvenus2967 lol yes!
When I was a kid I was so amazed by chess because of this game, my father loved to play chess and he bought one for us to play almost every day after doing my homework!
Still love chess and play whenever I find someone that does too.
Hearing the building noises at 1:00 makes me want to play
its the blacksmith you dumbass
selbstbewusstesMädchen
yes that's why I said the comment.
***** no you didn't, you said "building noises"
Hearing the arrows sounds is equal to.ingame
for me 0:21
Watching this makes one wonder and realize how priceless our memories are. We may not care how much money we had or how rich our parents were, but still hold unto those good memories with our friends, and our first impressions we had about our world and history mixed with these capturing ancient-themed music and images .. Let this be a reminder for each of us, not be blind of those things that really matter in our lives, and which will, one day, be our proof and contentment, and that we will look back and smile in peace knowing that we had a good life
the best game and intro ever ever ever :)
Age of Empires 2 Intro (Uncircumcised Version)
ha.
SpengRob lol
not really, it is called the longer penis version
What an absolute masterpiece of a game. Best strategy game ever!
Wow... truly a lost jewel. I am sharing this!
*****
Exactly! I just played a couple of matches with some friends, a few hours ago. 15 years later, this game is still being played. Truly a legend.
This has to be one of the best intros ever
How the pieces are animated in their heads and it slowly becomes the real thing, and in the end, the king piece is the symbol
Sounds like you got yourselves a very rare piece from that market in Moscow. Thanks for uploading this.
The nostalgia 😭I remember never skipping this intro
This game aged like a fine wine.
No, the "Finest" wine.
Jesus level quality of wine
Pure gold. I remember picking up this game from our local Fred Meyer. Still have a couple of the old Discs and bought the Conquerors expansion a couple of times so I could get friends to play as well. Such an amazing game and fond memories. THANK YOU!
That ending do, so profound.
wololo
Hello there
Mimimi ayeyoyo
*AZTEC*
That priest tho

I love that the sound effects used in the cinematic are exactly the same as the ones in game
that ending is so powerful.
Damn, kinda shows that young soldiers are just pawns to die in a game played by old men.
ChaosCharge This is SO true.
Tacit said that " war is old man talking and young man dying ".
ChaosCharge shit that’s deep
SO Original smh
"War is where the young and stupid go to die for the old and bitter"
Not all heroes wear capes! Thanks for uploading this!
the moral of the story... Don't get addicted to chess board pieces
hahahaha thats funny
jajjajajja xDD
But love chess ^^
Un juego insuperable
my whole damn chillhood!.... i love AoE2, and have until today with 30 years a special place in my heart! thanks Ensemble Studios for this masterpiece!
The animation on this is truly incredible, just look at it on 2:15 that looks crazy accurate to a group of archers scrambling to get into position, and the charge made by the footmen would've been better if they had their shields up, but still an incredible sequence.
La introducción de una leyenda que nunca pasará de moda
21 years ago I watch this for 1st time, it was such a good intro, great graphics, great music. Best strategy game overall !
I remember as a kid having finally got a Aoe disk and invite one of my friends to come over to play together. I went to the bathroom and when I come back the disk is gone. He was the only person in the game room. I asked him and he said he knew nothing about it. After that the friendship is gone as well.
That explains how popular the game was😂
Age of chess 2: age of kings....
This would be most awesome chess game ever.
An excellent game.
Dunno why this made me laugh so much
Thank you so much for share this video. It reminds me my childhood. i was searching for this intro video for long.
Imagine being a 12 years old boy with a disfunctional family living on a 3rd world country with no friends and then you get and old pc with windows 98, you knew you could play videogames on a pc because you visited a place where they had it, then you have some bucks and decide to buy a pirated cd of a game, that game is age of empires 2, and was the first game you installed on that old pc, with nothing to escape your cruel reality, only this game...
That boy was me, Now im 23 and everytime i got a new pc or laptop the first game to install is aoe2
This happened to me too when I was 12. The game came out 1999 and it was my only remedy to escape the cruel world.
Confirmó bro
WTF where do you know me from?
I can relate to that

I love it this intro is my childhood and one of my reasons for my love to the history, I really love this game, grettings from Chilee.
2:35 mininuks, war never changes
But men do
BlitzTaifun thought the startegies they make
Solid Snake in MGS4 said "War has changed" though. lol
It's bad that they put the cut version in the game.
Erm, my version had this ._.
Xeno Byte Cool. Unfortunately my didn't have.
The Original Game of Thrones ladies and gentlemen.
Wrong.
I was making a joke.
DWatchRazgriz funny.
Naruto AMVs Clearly you have no sense of humor.
oh good one. was that another one of your "hilarious" jokes?
Este juego es de lo más hermoso que habrá en la existencia humana.
El Age esta mas vivo que nunca
Whoever executed this has a wonderfully creative mind.
He looks fucking distraught to have lost a trebuchet
***** So what? There's a whole forest right behind his army and i sure he can get more gold with that crown of his.
+Jack Murphy Also, given The Bishop, he also has the Relic in his possession.
+Ben Angell That`s because his Trebuchet was his Pawn ... aka one of 2 main chess pieces (Pawns and Kings) you cannot replace once gone ;)
Anyone ever wondered why the Attacking King has Man-at-Arm in imperial Age when Trebuchets are available ?! :D
keV Wolf he is just a mofokin noob
keV Wolf only true players know
sometimes, you do not need to upgrade your man-at-arms / some unnecessary unit when in insane multiplayer matches, Trebuchet would tear down castles fast AF while at Imperial Age players tend to built castles
Maybe he went full into paladins and archers.
@Brain Pains! some pointy boys infront of your longbowmen work wonders tho
i think this is the intro that i watched the most without skipping, love it!
Wow so many memories..my first game with fifa 2001 in a windows 98 pc... nostalgia...what a time it was.. super music super games super movies
The most most epic.. still in 24
My childhood, will never forget this!
I honestly couldn't tell if this was real or CGI when I was a kid. Pretty obvious now.
Wow I miss this intro. It’s literally it’s own short story with a great ending. I used to actually enjoy watching this before I played. I hope Age of Empires 4 has an intro this epic!
this intro MUST stay in this quality for ever, it makes it very unique!
2:25 ohh the dieing knight makes me sad
Childhood! I still believe this to be the best strategy war game of all time.
12 years ago and yet this game has stood the test of time. Legendary creators.
When he gazed around him and saw the destruction, dropping the chess piece in defeat, a little tear ran down my cheek.
+SmoothCriminalAaron Also, the chess piece is a king, which carries a huge symbolic value as well. Really, poor poor soldier~
Also, the banners on the castle are green and the archers are wearing green robes. The attacking soldiers wears red (like the older king)
heaven had already visited my childhood
I still remember the first time I met this game as a kid. I love this game and I always will
The king had no villagers left, poor guy
anybody know where i can buy this epic chess game? :O
*****
The chess game.
*****
hahaha i know that this is not a chess game :P but yes, you can buy the chess game in the intro^^
***** Really?!
I wasn't talking about Age of Empires II, I was talking about the chess game the monarchs played (in response to GemueseBong's comment).
Yzacata
yes you can buy it

try this :)
GemueseBong
its not quite the same, but i like it anyway....340€ ftw ?
like many say, the end of the intro is so powerful. it gav adrenalin to hype you for gaming really big
0:48 Thats how the regular military salute came to existence, lifting part of your helmet one handed
Do you know why soldiers nowadays stands with a hand on their head when they salute ? ==> 0:47
This is the origin because someday in the past 2 knights opened that thing on the elmet for see each other
@@gabrielebattaglia3811 the visor you mean?
Wow game intros used to last ages, this is a full blown movie!
I always found it amusing that the end of the opening cinematics end up with everyone dead. It's like the developers are trying to say something.
War.
War never changes.
With each of them end either with the demise of the king and/or the entire empire ... and the soldiers + innocents pay the biggest prize.
;) Just my interpretation.
Chess pieces to aoe units (does not include unique units)
Pawn: trebuchet, scout cavalier, militia
Rook: castle, archer towers, walls and bombard towers
Knight: Knight, light cavalier, every other stables units
Bishop: Monk
King: King, every MALE hero
Queen: Joan of Arc, every FEMALE hero
And queen?
pawn are infrantry and archer
A female hero is a heroine. Keep the sexist terms active, folks.
Recently I got back into age of empires 1 and soon thereafter I got 2 and suddenly all these real people actually made sense to me since I’ve already learned about them in history class and getting really invested into the game again I even battled my brother and of course got my ass whooped like 4 times I can’t wait for the new age of empires 2 remastered it looks so amazing and does the original game justice in terms of graphics
amen brother
Conoci este juego el año 2001 y ahora a mis 58 años aun lo juego,es el mejor juego de estrategia
This is new for me didn't know this veraion existed
one of the best game intros
One of the oldest videos on TH-cam. I remember watching this video as a kid.
So sad that they did not remade this intro for the definitive edition. I know it would have been a ton of work but it would have been cool.
I remember when I was a kid my brother had this game. I had no clue how to play it but when I'd get home from school I would just watch this for fun.
''[...]and, disappointingly though, most of the units' sprites are fromA ge of Empires itself.[...]''
Are you expecting to see CnC Tiberian Dawn sprites? What do you mean? x)
+Phoenix4646 I forgot to specify that it was sprites from the 1st AoE game. "Disappointingly" is probably an unfair use of word by me, since the developers likely had to use the old ones as stand-in before implementing their new sprites for the game.
+Kustin I had AoE II as a kid, and so far I remember it was the same exact intro, and I have played through the Jeanne d'Arc campaign, and there was also a map editor! I always thought this was the "normal" game..?
Spanish archer didn't update to crossbow is disappointed...
There are a few scenes that were deleted from the officially-distributed game intro. (The scene with the two guards in the tower, the one with the relic etc.)
iReal Worlds
Monk temporary healing two injured low hp guard off screen.
that moment at 0:18 when the music switches and the lone soldier on his horse move on, still goose bumps
Thank you very much TH-cam, for recommending me 14 years later beautiful
I remember this, actually entirety of this. There was unofficial Polish version based on that build floating around in the late 90s-mid 00s. Unofficial = one guy with Russian accent voicing everything in a quite bored voice. Eventually got the retail version, though played that one as I didn't speak English well at that time.
