    I remember one skit in which Pat walked into a store and asked where the restrooms were. The sales woman or cashier pointed, Pat looked and there were two restrooms, side by side, one marked "Men" and the other "Women." Pat started walking in that direction and we felt like we would finally know the answer, male or female, but as Pat neared the restrooms SNL broke in with a fake news alert before he or she got there. When the alert was over we saw Pat had exited the restroom but we didn't know which. The response to the skit was hilarious.

      Maybe cause it didn't matter to them. They were probably non binary. But there are people who are within the binary who do mind. And that's ok. I have a feeling you mind if people call you a sir or ma'am. Not a big deal. I don't think MOST people care if you make a mistake, I think people only care if you don't honor their request after they've already told you what they prefer.

    • @indiannataylor3994
      @indiannataylor3994 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@chrisbrooks6697 binary is limiting to two. Non binary proposes that there are more than two gender identities, therefore the limitation you speak of is in your own mind. Because non binary means not within the binary, as in more expansive than the binary of 2. Now....if what you commented was just to spout off your belief in only two genders then say that. Also the non plural they is used often in the English language. Mostly to address someone you don't know the name or in this case the identity of.

    Pat was not non-binary or any part of the LGBTQ community. Pat was a character who did not realize that Pat's gender or sexuality was not clear. There are several Pat skits and a movie that introduced this characte's background. Several times Pat stated that Pat's gender was obvious. Pat also made it very clear that Pat was heterosexual. Pat was clueless that Pat's apparel did not conform to Pat's gender, making it clear to others.
    Pat was not LGBTQ, and should not be used as a poster child or offense to any community.
    Many womrn and men during this time dressed androgenously and did not realize how they appeared to others. People appear to have forgotten this and others looking through a modern lens missed the point.

    Watching this for the first time in 2020 after hearing about it from Kate Bornstein’s writing. The character Pat is portrayed pretty unkindly but I think the real joke is how much everyone around them cares unnecessarily about what their gender might be! This episode also shows the silliness of gendered items like razors too. I wish they’d made more of a focus on the ridiculousness of that

    • @whoareyoutoaccuseme
      @whoareyoutoaccuseme 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      yeah, i watched these when they originally aired when I was in my early teens - and that's what i always took form it - how ridiculous it was that everyone needed to know so bad. But my issue was, that they portrayed Pat like they were a bit mentally-challenged or autistic. It made me sad, because they portrayed that as a negative thing.

    • @Waybelowaverage494
      @Waybelowaverage494 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@whoareyoutoaccuseme agreed- it shouldn’t matter why people portray themselves a certain way. people shouldn’t have to make themselves palletable for everyone, and while I do think it’s good to show yourself in a tidy way, it really shouldn’t matter what gender you are. As for your comment regarding autism, I agree wholeheartedly. Autistic individuals have a tendency to not understand some of the meaningless societal enforcements and rules, such as adhering to gender standards. I guess part of the skit is about how everyone else is uncomfortable and almost victimized by Pat and their lack of obvious affiliation to one gender, but also by their ‘abnormal’ behavior. This is something I see a LOT nowadays, where people who parent a non-conforming child, and especially an autistic child, play victim instead of being there for the child. I get that autism can be really hard to deal with for other people, but it is also hard for the individual, and they shouldn’t be othered and used as a prop for pity.

      @@horacio-ho3bf LoL that's such BS, sorry to say. Trans was never really a thing of center of attention. Yes it's been around for many years. BUT we've never had them being forced into our schools to read to our children, NEVER have we been forced politically or socially to hang their flags in all areas of businesses/schools, now we are being persecuted if we deny them entry into a bathroom that they are not of the same sex. SOOOOOOO women's or men's rights no longer exist when it comes to bathrooms. Did we forget how women's sports are now being taken over by men lol.
