Pat was not non-binary or any part of the LGBTQ community. Pat was a character who did not realize that Pat's gender or sexuality was not clear. There are several Pat skits and a movie that introduced this characte's background. Several times Pat stated that Pat's gender was obvious. Pat also made it very clear that Pat was heterosexual. Pat was clueless that Pat's apparel did not conform to Pat's gender, making it clear to others. Pat was not LGBTQ, and should not be used as a poster child or offense to any community. Many womrn and men during this time dressed androgenously and did not realize how they appeared to others. People appear to have forgotten this and others looking through a modern lens missed the point.
I dont think anyone claimed that Pat was meant to be 'non-binary' or LGBT, tho. The whole premise of the character is clear enough - a person whose gender cannot be determined through any means. The fun is seeing how Pat consistently avoids 'gender reveals'.
Before the non binary trend be openly spread., there it was Pat, outstandingly performed. The think with Pat character is that despite it recognizes the value of personal (gender) choices it also points the confusing even absurd matter it may be for the majority.

Watching this for the first time in 2020 after hearing about it from Kate Bornstein’s writing. The character Pat is portrayed pretty unkindly but I think the real joke is how much everyone around them cares unnecessarily about what their gender might be! yeah, i watched these when they originally aired when I was in my early teens - and that's what i always took form it - how ridiculous it was that everyone needed to know so bad. But my issue was, that they portrayed Pat like they were a bit mentally-challenged or autistic. It made me sad, because they portrayed that as a negative thing.

Autistic individuals have a tendency to not understand some of the meaningless societal enforcements and rules, such as adhering to gender standards. I guess part of the skit is about how everyone else is uncomfortable and almost victimized by Pat and their lack of obvious affiliation to one gender, but also by their ‘abnormal’ behavior. This is something I see a LOT nowadays, where people who parent a non-conforming child, and especially an autistic child, play victim instead of being there for the child. I get that autism can be really hard to deal with for other people, but it is also hard for the individual, and they shouldn’t be othered and used as a prop for pity.

It's 'funny" I remember watching these first run/ran, and everybody I knew thought it's a little funny but pretty weird because no one we knew was like Pat in real life, nowadays we are living it.
You guys ain't going to believe this but I actually met a real person like this. I was at the Saginaw fair with my family in the mid-90s, my wife was pregnant with my fourth child we were walking through the commercial exhibits, I stopped at this kiosk and this person was selling this product called "Worley's Wonder" the person demonstrated this product which was a spray that you spray on glass to make it . Anti-fog and Sparkle, and jewelry to make it Sparkle, it's a really good product. all along I was confused on what sex this person was because it had a dorky haircut a white shirt with a vest and its hands were soft and it had a Pudgy looking body(just like pat). And a soft feminine voice tone, finally I came to the conclusion it was a guy, my wife said to me.... honey "she's" going to..... then that person interrupted her saying HE...! HE...! my wife looked astonished and said. I'm sorry... after we left we both had a good laugh after the incident
Oh trust me, these people have existed since forever. My youngest son once asked me at a petrol station if the cashier was a man or a woman, right there within earshot of them. They didn't react, but I quickly got us out of there and had to tell him that's rude. Secretly I chuckled about it to myself though.

Remember when people tried to avoid offending people by misgendering them? (Literally the entire premise behind the Pat sketches, where everyone is trying to be careful not to get it wrong and not to offend by asking outright.) Now we've got folks who relish the opportunity to aggressively misgender people in the most insulting ways they can imagine.
I remember when friends of mine were in the closet, got beat up or thrown out of the house or attempted suicide for being gay...glad things have changed...we have learned to have empathy now...some of us.
This skit was ahead of it's time now Pat's are everywhere.

I was taught to only say ma’am and sir as a child and only to old people as an adult. Otherwise it’s rude, like calling someone old or looking at them badly, it’s unfriendly and aggressive . Except southerners I guess
I finally was told at my job to drop all pronouns when answering business calls. Been bitched at so many times for "misgendering" various clients. When I hear Vin Diesel's voice and ask "how are you today, sir?" I don't expect to be told I "misgendered" a wannabe woman.

@@Britt3334 I was working the festival booth in high school in the '90s and someone came up who was a Pat. Me and my teacher were trying to figure it out for a while.
Pat was not non-binary or any part of the LGBTQ community. Pat was a character who did not realize that Pat's gender or sexuality was not clear. There are several Pat skits and a movie that introduced this characte's background. Several times Pat stated that Pat's gender was obvious. Pat also made it very clear that Pat was heterosexual. Pat was clueless that Pat's apparel did not conform to Pat's gender, making it clear to others.
Pat was not LGBTQ, and should not be used as a poster child or offense to any community.
Many womrn and men during this time dressed androgenously and did not realize how they appeared to others. People appear to have forgotten this and others looking through a modern lens missed the point.
I dont think anyone claimed that Pat was meant to be 'non-binary' or LGBT, tho. The whole premise of the character is clear enough - a person whose gender cannot be determined through any means. The fun is seeing how Pat consistently avoids 'gender reveals'.

Watching this for the first time in 2020 after hearing about it from Kate Bornstein’s writing. The character Pat is portrayed pretty unkindly but I think the real joke is how much everyone around them cares unnecessarily about what their gender might be! This episode also shows the silliness of gendered items like razors too. I wish they’d made more of a focus on the ridiculousness of that
yeah, i watched these when they originally aired when I was in my early teens - and that's what i always took form it - how ridiculous it was that everyone needed to know so bad. But my issue was, that they portrayed Pat like they were a bit mentally-challenged or autistic. It made me sad, because they portrayed that as a negative thing.
@@whoareyoutoaccuseme agreed- it shouldn’t matter why people portray themselves a certain way. people shouldn’t have to make themselves palletable for everyone, and while I do think it’s good to show yourself in a tidy way, it really shouldn’t matter what gender you are. As for your comment regarding autism, I agree wholeheartedly. Autistic individuals have a tendency to not understand some of the meaningless societal enforcements and rules, such as adhering to gender standards. I guess part of the skit is about how everyone else is uncomfortable and almost victimized by Pat and their lack of obvious affiliation to one gender, but also by their ‘abnormal’ behavior. This is something I see a LOT nowadays, where people who parent a non-conforming child, and especially an autistic child, play victim instead of being there for the child. I get that autism can be really hard to deal with for other people, but it is also hard for the individual, and they shouldn’t be othered and used as a prop for pity.

It's 'funny" I remember watching these first run/ran, and everybody I knew thought it's a little funny but pretty weird because no one we knew was like Pat in real life, nowadays we are living it.
You guys ain't going to believe this but I actually met a real person like this. I was at the Saginaw fair with my family in the mid-90s, my wife was pregnant with my fourth child we were walking through the commercial exhibits, I stopped at this kiosk and this person was selling this product called "Worley's Wonder" the person demonstrated this product which was a spray that you spray on glass to make it . Anti-fog and Sparkle, and jewelry to make it Sparkle, it's a really good product. all along I was confused on what sex this person was because it had a dorky haircut a white shirt with a vest and its hands were soft and it had a Pudgy looking body(just like pat). And a soft feminine voice tone, finally I came to the conclusion it was a guy, my wife said to me.... honey "she's" going to..... then that person interrupted her saying HE...! HE...! my wife looked astonished and said. I'm sorry... after we left we both had a good laugh after the incident
