  • Throughout the Attack on Titan Series we watch as Reiner shows contradictions in his personality and his actions. He dealt with a split personality during his time on the island of Pradis and during this time committed many acts that directly clash with his morals and philosophy that he lives by. In today's video I'll summarize all of this up and discuss why these actions are exactly what led him into depression and becoming suicidal, and what type of person Reiner really is underneath it all. I hope you enjoy this Attack on Titan Character Analysis of Reiner braun!

Reiner is by far my favorite character, he has so much depth to go in on. He suffers like a actual human, he regrets everything Because he betrayed his freinds, and no matter what he put others before himself, he truly is a warrior. I can’t wait to see where he goes in part 2

Felt so bad for Reiner and my empathy towards him only grew after realizing that he and others were only kids when they destroyed the wall.
He's-- he's a walking PTSD. Full on dissociating from the horrible deeds he and his friends commit a second after they happen, because his brain Just Can't Take It.

    • @shriefallam8866

He destroyed the walls twice, the second time, he was not a brain washed kid anymore, your argument is wrong.

The character of Reiner greatly reflects the conflict between conscience and duty. He's such a shattered character and we see how it consumes him while he lives. The author prolongs his life to show how guilt can really eat up a person.

Reiner is such a well-written character. His arc is probably one of the best in the series. I find it ironic how he longs to die after betraying his Marleyan friends but ends up witnessing more tragic situations such as Colt and Porco's death knowing. Although he was a perpetrator of many people's deaths including his own comrades in Paradis, he was also a victim (or a tool, as you've said) and it's very much apparent with the amount of guilt he felt after returning.
Great analysis! Hope you do more of other AOT characters. New sub here :)

Reiner is probably the most grounded human in AOT and his back story like anyone in the AOT universe is saddening and full of dispair. Imagine everything you were told to believe conflicts against what you discovered yourself

3:32 It's not like Reiner has much of a choice here. If he started talking about the people of "paradise", not only would he get punished but his entire family as well. That's why he corrects Falco when Falco starts talking about not wanting to fight for Marley. Since if anyone other than Reiner heard talk like that, Falco and his family could be turned into titans. Reiner doesn't "move on" becouse he chooses, but becouse he has to in order to survive and help his family.
Reiner also didn't choose to remember his friends coldly. He was being sarcastic, reminiscing about the good times he shared with them. In the manga, he smiles briefly while thinking about it. That's why his mom reacted that way. She wouldn't allow Reiner to humanize the enemy, becouse it brings all of their lives in danger if word got out.
Other than that, very good video on Reiner! He's definitely one of my favorite characters as well!

I actually have no problem with my man Reiner sniffing Historia's letter. Yes it's weird. But Reiner basically gave up his whole life to fight for Marley and for his parents' affection. He had no childhood. With him no longer being cursed to die after 13 years, Reiner has a lot of life to live. If he wants to act like a dumb teenager, let him act like a dumb teenager!

Agreed. Like who cares it's funny, Reiner has already made some comments towards women before this isn't his first time. After everything Reiner has been through and has fought Reiner desveres his new life and if he wants to joke around and be a goofball then he shall do as he damn pleases. Look at characters like goku and naruto, goku despite being one of the most powerful characters in anime history he's afraid of noodles and freaks out like a little kid and he's still a legendary and very well loved character and there's naruto, he's done so many goofy stuff in his life he was like the prankster as a young boy, hell he even turns himself Into a naked girl and tried to sneak into the girls bathroom but is still a very well loved character and is also a legend. Reiner did wayyy less then those 2 combined😂

    Thank you for your analysis!
I wont go in detail, but i also have a type of identity disorder that makes me split in multiple personas and how Isayama portrayed Reiner's mental illness is, in my opinion, very accurate and well thought. His suicidal tendencies are a common consequence of his (probably) depression, guilt, despair and personality disorder.
    Amazing content. Keep it up!
