Thank you for upload. This is very helpful. I was looking for B&W scanning tutorial with VueScan. This is spot-on!

Thanks for the info on the compressed air. I've been using some junk from Wally World. I hope it won't eat the coating off my lenses. Where did you get all of the different scanner masks?

7 years later; are you still scanning the same way?

Yes, I am. I do need to make a new version of this tutorial because Vuescan's control layout has changed a bit in the years since I made this. I'm still using the same settings, but they're in slightly different places in the software now. I've been having some health issues the last few years and have not felt up to doing a lot of work. Updating this and doing some new tutorials is one of the things I hope to do next year.
Edit: I just realized I answered from my other TH-cam account. This is Chris Crawford. ChrisAndSneaky is my cat's channel!

Am I correct to assume that the Super Coolscan 5000 ED that I was just given will run as well on VueScan as the Nikon software?

Someone loves you..that is an awesome gift!
Yes the Nikon 5000ED will work great with Vuescan. I'm using a Nikon 8000ED, which is very similar, except that mine can do 120 film and 35mm, and yours is 35mm only.
The Nikon software may not work for you at all. It hasn't been updated in over a decade and I know it will not work on newer Macs. It might, maybe, work on Windows 7, 8, and 10 but I have not tried it. Some people have told me it works, and others have said no. Nice thing about Vuescan is it lets you use older scanners like yours with new computers and current operating systems even though the scanner's manufacturer never updated their own software to work on later systems.

I didn't realize how awesome the gift was until I poked around online, yes I am feeling pretty loved as a result.
I decided to purchase the VueScan software and start the learning curve, I'm glad that I did. So far I have already seen a few images that were bad exposures be saved or more usable because it picked up either more shadow detail or highlight detail and your tutorial was a big help, thank you!

+junelopez215 You offering to buy it for me? The only scanners better than my Nikon are the Imacon/Hasselblad Flextight models that cost over $12,000. That's simply not realistic for me.
