      I'm glad I could help! I went through all that nearly 25 years ago when I got my first Epson photo printer. When they introduced the Advanced B&W Mode, it made life so much easier! Back then I had to buy a third-party printer driver that cost over $800 to get good B&W prints! I make my living selling my prints, so it paid for itself, but it still hurt having to shell out that kind of money.

    Hello Christopher Thanks for this tutorial which helped considerably in setting up my Canon FS4000 scanner for scanning slides. I have however still been having difficulty bringing out sufficient detail in shadow areas - particularly with underexposed slides ; I tried doing 4 passes as you suggested but found that there was barely any improvement in shadow detail and the shadow areas remain "blocked up". However I came across on another website a reference to the "multi exposure" setting which your tutorial just says to leave unchecked, so I had not previously tried this option. But, according to the VueScan manual, this setting is intended to bring out detail from the shadow areas ; here (between inverted commas) is what the manual says : - "This option provides a way to get additional detail from the darker parts of the scanned image. It is available on scanners that are able to increase the CCD exposure time. A first pass is performed as usual with the normal RGB exposure. This will be an appropriate exposure for the image as a whole. Then a second pass is performed with a longer exposure, which can reveal additional detail in dark areas not captured in the first pass. VueScan then merges the results of the two by choosing from either the first or second exposure pass." Having (albeit only briefly) tried this setting it does indeed seem to produce a scan that compared to a scan without this setting gives a wider range of detail into the shadow, so thought I would bring this to your attention in case you (and others reading this posting) were unaware of this function. Thanks again for taking the trouble to produce a useful tutorial.

    Thanks for making this tutorial. My impression is that the goal is to make the scan as close to the desired end result as possible so that the scan has the information to be read in PS or LR. Is that not correct? For example, increasing Brightness to lighten up the shadows, kind of like exposing to the right. I have checked the pixel colors box to see clipping and/or out of gamut and then struggled to fix an issue with the various sliders and the histogram in the Color tab. Do you not do this and rely on PS/LR for the fix? Also, would 64 bit be even better than 48, putting the scan time aside? Thanks again.

  • @BrianBeker
    @BrianBeker 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thank you for the excellent tutorial. One small question: with regard to using 48 bit depth, what is your guidance on why not to select 64 bit RGBI. Is it because the "I" in RGBI is for an infrared channel used only for the dust and scratch removal processing? Would using 64 bit RGBI have any advantage over 48 bit otherwise, or would it just unnecessarily bump up file size and/or scan time for no other benefit? Again, thanks again for producing such a concise and informative tutorial.

    I would disagree that scanning B&W in RGB mode only makes a bigger file; it does give a lot more too; maybe your scanner does not need the extra assistance; I'm recently scanning with a flatbed, in RGB mode [by accident] and yes; it is different ~ I'm getting a bronzed effect ~ almost like colour or that Sepia Toning that I never did like, or get right 55 years ago. ~ ;)

    • @chrisandsneaky2453

      That's because the scanner is adding color that is not in the negative. You are NOT getting more shades of gray or more image detail. You can tone a picture in photoshop later and have much more precise control of the color.

    I always get super green blue negative scans with Vuescan and my V700. The only setting that comes close to normal is auto levels. Nothing else works. Any ideas?

    • @chrisandsneaky2453
      @chrisandsneaky2453 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine come out like that, too. I think that color is basically an inversion of the brown/orange base color of color negative films. Vuescan just doesn't do a good job of neutralizing that color cast. I they would make color neg films without the orange base; nearly all color negs now are printed by scanning them and making digital prints. Even in photo labs, virtually no one operates optical printing machines anymore. Most labs use Noritsu digital or Fuji Frontier minilabs now. The base color was needed to make the colors look good when printed on RA-4 type color print paper. It is not needed for scanning and digital printing, and having a colorless base like slide films would make negative films MUCH easier to scan! You'll just have to edit the scans to set the correct color balance, like I did in the video; and yeah, its a lot more work than it should be. I recently tried a photo lab that scans using the Noritsu HS-1800 scanner, which is probably the best 35mm scanner ever made. It produces 4500dpi resolution and gives 16 bit uncompressed tiff files. I was amazed by the quality and color correcting the scans (they do need editing, but are easier to edit then my home scans were) was much easier and faster. I want one of the Noritsu scanners, but it costs $20,000! I think I'm going to have them do all my color neg scans; its only $20 a roll and my time is worth more than that. I have a lot of health problems and don't have a lot of time anymore to fuss with it.

  • @johnrogers2418
    @johnrogers2418 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only reason I have found to scan in RGB instead of 16 bit Grey is that some tools in photoshop and other editing software seem to get confused when working in greyscale. Even the SilverEfex Pro sometimes gets a little wonky if the image is not RGB so if I am not as concerned with the increased time and file size it is something that I occasionally do if I plan on using anything that relies on the different channels even though they are all grey.

    • @chrisandsneaky2453
      @chrisandsneaky2453 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, there are some filters and plugins for PS that only work on RGB images. What I do is scan as grayscale; it makes scanning faster and the file smaller; then if I need the image to be RGB for a specific purpose, you can convert it to RGB in photoshop before running the plugin. Edit: Didn't realize I was commenting as my other TH-cam channel! ChrisAndSneaky is my cat's youtube channel.

    Thank you for providing an excellent tutorial. I have a question. I am using Lightroom's color grading panel to add a warm color tint to my black and white photos, because I love the color blending, luminance and saturation aspects of that tool. I then open the file in Photoshop for tweaking in layers and print optimizing, and then print using Photoshop to manage color. Should I be concerned about the grays being neutral and color casts when printing in this manner? Thanks.

    • @christophercrawford777
      @christophercrawford777 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're printing using the advanced B&W mode, you should not add a color tone in Lightroom or in Photoshop. The printer driver will convert the image back to B&W and then apply its own tone (the one you choose in the printer driver). You could print the toned image as a color image but it probably will not look as good as a grayscale image toned in the driver.

    • @chrisandsneaky2453
      @chrisandsneaky2453 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, that doesn't work well. First off, you need the image inverted. Second, the amount of color correction needed if you invert a scan of the neg that was scanned as a transparency is extreme. Why do all that work with no real benefit?

This lack of focusing ability is the big reason why flatbed scanners give softer scans than real film scanners. There are companies that make adjustable-height film holders for the Epson scanners. These let you 'focus' by adjusting the distance between the film and the scanner glass; they work but are incredibly time consuming to set up.

    Thanks for going through your settings - I'm back using VueScan again after a long break from scanning and your tutorial proves useful in getting the most from the scanner before taking the image into photoshop, etc. One issue I am trying to sort is that I cannot get VueScan to show in the import section of Photoshop. I just moved to Mac OS from Windows where VueScan was present as a plugin, but it does not seem to have installed on the Mac. When I try adding the scanner using Mac OS it does not see my scanner, however using VueScan as standalone on the Mac shows the scanner and works just fine. Just wondered whether you have any experience with this before I head over to VueScan for a support ticket :)

      Adobe removed support for that feature in Photoshop, unfortunately. There's nothing that Hamrick (the company that makes Vuescan) can do about it. The link below explains it. Scroll to the bottom of the screen, the info you want is down there. www.hamrick.com/twain.html
