I wish more instructors would talk about principles, it's such a crucial aspect of bjj and yet it gets overlooked a lot
Yeah for sure, the thing is some of these simple big principles are the hardest thing to discover in a way they seem obvious once you know them but they really aren’t so easy to figure out
Agreed, that's my issue with the school I attended.
@@JonThomasBJJThank you.
I travel for work and I have visited 70 jiu-jitsu gyms, and concepts are almost never taught.
Yeah some instructors like John danaher just don't go into enough detail
4 year 1 stripe blue belt here. Half way through and I had to stop and comment that this video is straight gold
This is one of the GREATEST free guard passing principles videos ever made. PLEASE don’t take it down.
You need to write a book on principles.
I’m drilling with my sons… 10 and 13.
2 weeks into my bjj journey and this channel has become my go-to after class. I always come back and watch videos on the positions I struggled in that day. Thanks for all this info Jon !
Real
Professor Jon your passing principles are truly the core of guard passing! It’s easy to remember the principles vs passing technics because the process of passing has too many variables that are difficult to predict , but the principles allow you to stay ahead of many technical transformations. When you add both technical skills and practical principles they complement each other! I ‘m definitely going to add the principles to my game! Thank you for sharing and pushing Jujitsu to the next level!
Coach AL
One of the best conceptual videos out there, only missing one thing: chapters!
I had added them already but somehow they didn’t come through, I’m going to add them in later today again. Thanks for letting me know
This is *such* a good video. I might only be a 3-stripe white belt, but from now until forever, whenever the technique of the day is a pass (or a guard/escape), that technique will be filtered through this lens that you've just opened my eyes to. 🤙
Deep dives into conceptual processes are my favorite types of videos from you
Thanks buddy will be doing more for sure!
Hello master! White belt with a few stripes here. Thanks for the content first of all :)
As a suggestion I would tell you that maybe in your videos you could include a breakdown - every now and then - of systems/principles from either IBJJF fights or even from your students sparring, highlighting the application or lack of application of these concepts.
Spending just a few minutes after class with my instructors asking "what did I do wrong there?" is priceless because of the wisdom they share, so consider this: in BJJ the majority of practitioners is white/blue: show them (me) what goes wrong during our sparring and then a top-notch application of what should be done instead from IBJJF tournaments.
Thank you for this! Brown belt here and this is extremely helpful.
Really enjoyed your seminars in Halifax. It changed my mount game a lot.
This is GOLD, THANK YOU!! 🔥🔥🔥🙌
Love your breakdowns - your videos are an awesome mix of narrated concepts and live-narrated techniques. This is such a great format! Vid is 🔥🔥🔥
Great video! Lucas Lepri visited our gym in April (FF in Milwaukee), and he covered this principle some. This did an excellent job expanding on that further and in a few other passing situations then he covered.
Really fantastic video, Jon!
Great vid as usual thanks Jon.
Jon! This is one of your best videos yet. So much excellent information in this, I will certainly share this with my team. 🙏🙏🙏
Very nice!! Not many people discuss the foundational principles of Jitz. This really breaks it down. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. OSS!
Great channel! Always incredible videos!
Awesome mini-instructional. I didn’t mind paying for the ones you sell because your youtube channel has 100 times more free content of the same quality. Thanks!
Best instructional information on the web! I am 60 and a blue belt still training, and this information is extremely helpful! Thank you!
This is GOLD!! such good teachings!
Great content as always, thank you so much
Awesome principles breakdown, thanks for your videos they help alot. Keep up the good work.
Thank you this has practical principles that can be applied in the next training session.
Incredible details Jon, I like how after the concept you revealed it changed the way I viewed the competition footage afterwards and it all made such better sense. Thanks so much bro!
Thanks a ton will! Call you soon!
Your vids are a must to watch it really helped my jujitsu so much thank you 🙏🏾
As always, great vid jon! I have trained with jon and espen, these guys are simply awesome, not just talented, but great teachers and people.
Awesome video, really loving the principles-based approach
Yeah principles like this are so powerful when you can find them, not always so easy to really figure these out though despite how obvious they seem when you learn them.
This was great, thank you. I've been sticking my foot in front of people's chest for years and thought it was just a late (desperate) guard pass defense for me. Glad to see other folks do this haha. I will definitely be teaching your passing principles too!
Quality content and great examples. 🔥👏
Thanks so much!!
Love your principles based approach!
Very nice content!!
Thanks for always putting out such high quality and well thought out content Jon. These videos are obviously a lot of work.
Thanks so much! Making these helps me organize a lot of stuff in my head as well!
Omg yes. This is exactly what I needed!!! Thank you
Hope you enjoy it buddy
Extremely valuable, I’m grateful to find content like this for free
Hope it makes a big difference in your game!
You are such an insightful teacher! Thanks for the info my friend.
My pleasure!
Very useful information presented clearly. Great video!

Awesome video Jonathan
Thank you!

Thanks! Means a lot! Been working on evolving it!
Great job! I love your content.
Really appreciate it!
Always blown away by your content JT!
Thanks so much! Put a lot of work into it!
Amazing stuff! As always really helpful!
Happy to help!
So good. Thank you!
Love all your videos but concept driven seems to stick best with me. Thanks for so much good content!
Always amazing content, thank you!!
No problem happy you liked it
Great video. Defo deserves a comment. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Thank you so much! Put a lot of work into this one!
Great stuff ozz from Australia
Excellent video
Again. Great stuff. Always helping me advance.
No problem!
This was a great video with a great setup and it taught a lot You got me to subscribed 👍👍
Man so happy to hear it from someone just now seeing my content. Hope you like some of the older videos as well. Check out my mount video, it’s one of my favorites
I watch you at half speed mate, it’s a real treat, I can absorb everything and it’s like watching Trevor on GTA when he’s had a few. You should try it 😄 (superb vids)
Hahahah I need to google Trevor from GTA now I’m not sure which character that was! Thanks for the support buddy!
Love all the Lo HL clips 🙌
Yeah it’s fun going back through all of those!
Passing like this has never been an issue for me, my issue is either not being far enough back to where they have a collar grip or a grip on my lapel and i start to play their game. I know she wasn’t trying but if this video had an active bottom player where the hands are also involved I think that would help a lot
I loved this video. Many a tad long for my attention span but I managed 😂
This is basically my style of guard passing but loads of details I will pay attention to in the future because there is a lot of room for improvement. I struggle with very flexible guard players. So plenty to take away here as regards them trying to get the foot back in.
I will be applying this stuff tomorrow & see how I get on.
Thanks for the great content!
Happy to hear it buddy! Yeah on retrospect I should have made it two or three video series or condensed it. Gonna be a bit more concise on the next one
absolute gamechanger.
Thank you 👊
So much good material thx! The one I’m going to try is the step back around their knee shield. I’ve been stuck behind some strong knee shields and I think this will help.
That knee shield run around is great! One of my new favorites!
Great job, really enjoy your hard work
Thanks so much buddy it means a lot!
Tried this today, dude straight kicked me on my face. Currently in the emergency room re-watching the video.
man your content is so choice
Amazing explanations, like the broll of competition showcasing the points you're making
Yeah I think the narrations help a lot!
Incredible instructional, thank you 🙏
You're very welcome!
Hey Jon, Thank You 🙏
Happy to help!
This is one of the best videos if not the best out there to understand the pass system .Oss
Thank you so much! Happy to see people understanding the true depth of value in this principle, it seems small but it really is everything for passing!
@@JonThomasBJJ you have changed my game with those videos!
Amazing details thank you
Happy to help
Thank you for these principles. I'm enjoying this format. What are your thoughts on ecological dynamics coaching applied to submission grappling (e.g. constrainst led approach, "games" vs drilling, etc)?
amazing content!
Thanks a lot buddy!
I enjoy this video very well!
Thank you very much!
So many details!
Yeah there was a ton in this one
Great video thanks 👍
No problem happy to help
I appreciate the combination of older and newer competition footage. I don't always know what to look for so thank you for this
No problem hope you are doing good! Gonna be back in Croatia soon for a camp!
This was more great content.... when is the Patreon coming?
Thanks!
Thank you so much for the support means a lot!
Incredible video. I don't think most people realise the value they get for free here.
Hard to really tell the value of certain details when weighed against all others on internet, but those who really work this will really understand for sure
I'm a blue belt and my passing is weak and this will definitely help, I'm much better off my back. I seem to get tired much easier trying to pass guard, mostly I get tired from fighting grips, especially when the higher belts grab my collar and use it to break my posture when I'm standing and pull my head down, I usually have to go to lower level on one knee to relieve the pressure, anything to help me with this would be much appreciated. I think half my problem is letting them make grips and taking too long to make my move.
I think when passing them making grips on you is inevitable so it’s more about learning to pass through certain grips than it is to not let them make grips on you. You gotta break it down by most common grips then have plans for dealing with them.
@JonThomasBJJ that makes sense, look forward to seeing more videos on this in the near future
no critique, love the content
Thank you so much!!!
Do you think the self frame - foot between guard retention style is too flexibility dependent and will break down as one gets older
As a purple belt with primarily open guard game this is sick for those times I'm on top. You're right about the grips at the end, we'd like to know more, for example, sleeve grip and kick off the pant leg is a killer and often what I fight for, lose that and you lose the position, any ideas on how to stop them getting it back?
This video gave me another Video idea: the pros/cons of wearing mismatched gi bottoms - overexplain 😅
Hate to brag, but I am a white belt with an intimidating amount of two stripes on it. Yet, I can still learn a lot from your videos.
Good
I never been to a bjj competition the footage looks really cool like a movie trailer.
Haha well if you like the sport it’s great!
You should link the second channel in the description!
I actually did but somehow all the chapters and link to second channel got deleted. Gonna add it back in later today
@@JonThomasBJJ Thank you Jon, your videos are my Bible. I wish you more no-gi content but I understand if that isn't as big a focus for you. I also prefer the gi
Would you be interested in doing a seminar in Springfield IL?
Usually I get a takedown on the opponent, or we start sitting and I take him to the back.
In eigher case my opponent gets time to grap my sleeves and I end up between his legs. I can get one of his legs to the ground the other one I try to put in knee shield position, but then proceeding is kind of awkward.
Removing a sleeve grip would require both hands, freeing one leg and he could regrip, but I need to circle around the knee shield, stepping over the pinned leg I'd get to half guard, but with insane chest distance. Help would be helpfull😂
Would love you to talk about the ecological approach. It seems your venturing into that concept with this video
👌

At :40sec in That is Jon absolutely dominating Gordon Ryan. 100% fact you saw it here first! lol 😮
Lmao Gordon with a mis matched gi lol
Where can I see the match between Lepri and Espen?
You are the Kyle Connor of jiu-jitsu or the other way around
::Comment for the algorithm::
Thank you so much
`19:46 : hahah atta boy;)
When will Jon do more no gi videos 😞
Haha hopefully sometime in next year
Comment left
Appreciate it!!
