SECRETLAB'S MAGNUS PRO - Customisation and good vs bad accessories

- Spoiler alert! the Secretlab's Magnus PRO is a great desk but not all of it’s accessories meet expectations. In this review I give an overview of the assembly procedure and a detailed review of the desk including a wobble test with examples to show stability. There are also some things to consider before purchasing the PC mount, especially if your case has top mounted vents.
Also reviewed are all the accessories available at the time of purchase. Plus, I show how with a 3D printer I created some simple addons to make it even better.

this is the best review for this desk that I have seen so far, thanks man.
Thank you, that's very kind of you to say so.
The information alone, to take into account that top mounted radiators are partially covered, tells me that I am at the right place.
I just became a happy new subscriber.
Thanks glad you found it helpful.
I highly doubt that the pc mount affects the performance of top mounted radiators.
This is by far the best review of this desk I've seen AND with some unique additions that I have never seen. THank you sir!
Thank you so much. That's very kind of you to say. Follow up video coming soon on the network cable extender but that will be on my new tech dedicated channel.
Found your video to be quite straight to the point, highlighting interesting and relevant points that will definitely help make pre-purchase decisions.
Thanks, that means a lot. Really glad you found it useful.
Good, I meant every word.
I don’t normally comment on videos, do give likes as I go. However, there was something about this video that I appreciated compared to many others I have watch.
Keep up the good job. :)
Great review at so many levels! I will be moving in a month and I’m undecided between the magnus and flexispot… I think the cable try in this one is really nice plus the monitor arm will be a bit closer as it’s mounted ahead of the try.
So far I’m leaning towards the Secretlab and this review has a lot of useful info, cheers!
Thanks, I'm glad you found it helpful. Hope your move goes well.
Great review and love ingenuity to make your life even better :)
Thanks. Hope you found it helpful.
Well put together video, thank you!
Thank you, that means a lot.
Brilliant review for the desk, thank you kindly mate!
Thank you. I'm glad you found it useful.
Had heard of the wobble "issue" but based on this video my stationary desk with 5 legs wobbles just as much
I agree most standard desks are going to be pretty similar. My previous desk was a built-in bench bolted to the walls and even that had some wobble.
A honest and very nice detailed review. thanks, i wanted to buy 2 rgb strips, but I guess i will keep my tapo strip, just move it to the new desk
Thank you, I'm glad you found it helpful.
Brilliant review. I think the monitor arms and not just the placement are giving you more wobble than expected. I switched out the Secretlab for Ergotron monitor arms and have no wobble on two heavy 32 inch monitors.
Thanks glad you liked it. I suspect you are correct on the arm wobble and there are better arms out there. But I've not found the wobble to be annoying or distracting and the arms do look good. (For monitor arms 🙂.)
Very nice mention of your height vs the desk, I have the same height, and often have desk issues too :)
Thank you. I haven't had any real issues in terms of size vs my height. I can touch the underside of the cable tray with my knees, but only if i really try. So you should be fine with the magnus pro if you are same height as me.
7:03 SCARED TS OUTTA ME! Lol.
Great video! Been thinking about getting this but my uplift desk is fine for now. Gonna keep saving.
Sorry about that (But your comment did the same to me I forgot I'd put that glitch change in 🤣🤣)
Keep saving and buy what's best for you .
Great video! I am in the market for a desk, I have contemplated doing a DIY buying my own legs and doing my own wood top, The Magnus XL, and possibly an Uplift desk. One of my concerns is depth since the room my office is in isn't particularly deep which is why I have been leaning towards DIY and doing a 27 inch deep custom desktop. But the sleekness of this desk is something that makes it appealing. If I do purchase it, I know all of the details from watching your review!
Thanks glad you liked the video, and I hope it helps you to make a decision either way.
Great video!! 🎉
Thank you
Great review, thank you! Good to see the some of the gotchas pointed out.
With the crossbar you mentioned, how much depth is there for your legs before your knees hit?
Any changes you'd mention or extra 3d printed parts since you made your review?
Thanks, I'm glad you found it helpful. In terms of leg room if I sit as close as possible to the desk my knees are about an inch away but level height wise with the lowest part of the crossbar. I can just about make my knees touch it but only if I'm effectively starting to slide under the desk. I'm 6ft4 and fairly slim, so can get closer to edge of desk than most. But I'd never sit that close so it's not really an issue.
I haven't thought of any other 3D parts to make as yet, but I have just received the SecretLabs network extender which is pretty good. I'll be posting a video review of that on my new tech focussed channel www.youtube.com/@DTSquaredTech very soon.
Great video
Thanks, glad you liked it.
best review !!
Thank you
Due to spinal fusion, I was in the market for a sit/stand desk. This is by far the best of the many reviews I reviewed. I also have a Titan chair. I added a lot of accessories but haven't ordered them. Thanks to your review, I'll skip the LED and order elsewhere. Unfortunately, after your review, I find myself in need of a 3D printer. I don't suppose you have a review of those? Thanks again!. ❤
So sorry to hear about your back problem, I hope the sit stand desk helps.
I haven’t made a review of my 3D printer (perhaps I should) but it is an Ender 3 S1 Pro and whilst not an expert on 3D printers I would recommend it.
I had one issue after a month or two where the extruder stopped working. It turned out to be the ribbon cable and after contacting the supplier / Ender they sent a new one out pretty quickly and it’s worked fine since. I’ve printed loads on it almost entirely parts I’ve modelled myself, to the point where what I thought would be an occasional toy to tinker with has become something I’d instantly replace if it stopped working.
Glad you enjoyed the review your kind comments mean a lot and I hope the Magnus Pro works out well for you.
Its a well made desk. Im loving mine. It does have a little wobble but nothing that makes me nervous. The cable management is very good.
I agree, the only issue I had was with the MAGRGB. Other than that it's great
Mine wobbles like crazy at height. Will be sending it back. Omnidesk my other desk is much more stable and the Secretlab monitor arms are flimsy and wobble easily as well.
I'm not sure how to set the max height, but I was able to set the minimum height by adjusting the desk to the desired height, then pressing the up and down buttons together until you hear a beep. The table will no longer go down below that point (even when using a previous preset that was lower).
There is a way to set the lowest height possible. You just gotta go to the desired height and then hold the up and down button at the same time until a beep sound is heard.
I found that out after watching the review of yours and then buying the desk.
I'll try that if it works, that's really good. Thanks for the information.
EDIT : Just tried and it works perfectly !! Also in case anyone else tries this pressing both buttons together again until you hear a beep un sets the lower limit.
@@DTSquaredglad to hear that :) also your 3d prints are really usefull thank you for that
I suspect wobble might be a function of the weight of the desk top. Weighty ones stabilize, lighter ones easily transmit the wobble from any leg instability. My solid wood top (30-40kg according to the specs) absorbs most of the kinetic energy from knocks fairly well and there is very little screen wobble.
I think you're correct that the desk top weight will damp any knocks, etc. But the top is pretty heavy, and I think in this case it is more that the arm that's amplifying the wobble. Either way I haven't found it too distracting, and I've seen similar screen wobble on permanently fixed desk tops.
Thanks for your review. Have you had any issues with the power delivery wirh build in power cable extender? 😊😊
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it. I haven't had any power related issues at all with the built in power delivery on the desk (or the 8 gang extension lead I added in the cable tray, just in case that's the one you meant.)
I think I did read about some people, that had had some issues with tripping RCDs, but if I remember correctly, it was earlier versions or a specific batch issue. (Though that is just from memory of a Redit post.) Mine has certainly been trouble-free.
Great review - thank you! Can I ask how big your monitor is? I’m planing to have a 32in and 28in dual monitor setup, and wondering if perhaps the monitor wobble would be reduced with a smaller monitor? I also plan on having the desk pushed up against a wall, so I’d be in the same situation with the side placement of the arm. Thank you!
Thank you glad you liked it. My monitor is 30inch (diagonal) and the wobble hasn't been a problem (apart from when I make it wobble by drumming on the desk, but it stops when I tell myself off 🤣). If you are using the double arm then I'm not sure how much you could move the mount to one side. I have my desk about 4inches from the wall (distance makes the lighting effect better on my wood veneer panels.)
With that gap I can get the lower arm section pointing straight back.
I'm not sure if the lower weight would make much difference. There's an argument to say that a lighter monitor has less inertia and so could wobble more. But I suspect the difference would be very marginal either way.)
@@DTSquared Thanks for the added info, very helpful!
13:12 “Normal-sized humans” 😂
Brilliant video! I have a tower tall 57cm do you think it's possible to mount on the Secret lab PC Mount? If I see the maximum height is 543mm how did you manage that with your case?
Sounds like it could be borderline. The thing to check is the distance from the top and bottom faces of the case in the middle (front to back) since that is where the clamp grips the case. my case has feet but those are only on the corners so don't affect the clamp.
@@DTSquared how would the pc mount handle a corsair 4000d airflow case?
does the clamp top been in middle effect the airflow?
@@FunRageDIEyes it does impact airflow i mounted my aio in front on my case to circumvent the issue
hey not sure if this has been mentioned but I was in a situation where I couldnt reach wifi frim where my nanoleafs could function nicely so I ended up installing the app on my PC and avoided using my mobile at all. This may help resolve this issue. For me personally I am limited to what I can and cant buy when I get this desk and the RGB strip will have to wait either way.
I'm pretty sure this isn't an option for the MAGRGB. It is outside of their normal eco system so the apps and other PC integration isn't supported. I think I mentioned that in the video as another limitation with the MAGRGB. I don't know if this is because of their move to Thread or they just decided to leave it outside of their existing eco system.
I had the same issue with the discount code, they have apparently recieved a number of complaints about this, but still haven't changed it.. very disappointing.
I agree, it's a shame when companies do things to promote their brand which can actually put you off them.
Can this desk also be used for music production, e.g. 2 speaker monitors (14 kg each), 1 ultra wide screen monitor and possibly a keyboard? And which size table is yours - 1500 or the 1700?
I would say that it could be used for music production. Double check but from memory the weight capacity is over 100kg so your two speakers and monitor shouldn't be a problem.
My desk is the smaller model.
Would be nice if they made a bigger desk but no standing option. Would be cheaper
Would it be possible to purchase those custom ends for the USB from you? I have no way to print those out
Hi, I don't normally supply parts as I'm not really setup to produce significant numbers of them. In the case of the USB bar ends they will only work with these exact USB cables as the holes have to match exactly (unless smaller USB cables and a lot of glue is used). These are the cables I used.-
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0932RLXXJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Are you based in the UK and able to get this type of cable?
Did you use a surge protector connecting to the desk?
Not from the wall to the desk but the 8 gang extension lead which is plugged into the desk has surge protection. So the desk is NOT protected but PC, monitor and everything else on the desk IS protected.
Do you suggest this desk?
I'm seeing this one because of the accessories, but I'm not sure if it's the best desk.
Difficult to say if it's the "best desk" I would say that it is certainly the nicest looking desk in terms of general style and finish of the ones I looked at. Functionally it works well so I doubt you'd be disappointed in it and from past experience Secret Labs are pretty good at fixing any issues that do arise. It's in the upper end of the reasonably priced desks so on balance it's definitely up there amongst the better desks.
@@DTSquared thanks, I like a lot of the accessories and the cable organisation, but already see good and bad feedback
Great video ! could please give a link to your 3d print models ? Also the ugreen laptop support. Thank you.
Hi, Glad you liked the video and found it useful. I've adjusted the description to include links to the laptop support and also the USB cable I used. I have also uploaded the parts to Thingiverss (sorry meant to do it sooner but xmas break got in the way :-) ) Links for parts are in the description. I'll try and add some more detail to Thingiverse in terms of design notes etc over the holiday, but if you have a specific question in the meantime let me know in the comments here.
All the best Dave
What monitor do you have your eye on that weighs more than 15kg?!
I'd like to get an ultrawide 49" curved monitor. Which, depending on the model, is just on or over the 15kg based on the specs. (Though the stated weight may include the stand, so actual load weight may hopefully be lower.)
@@DTSquared
Watched lots of reviews on these desks, yours was by far one of the best and independent so thank you.
I have a 49” monitor and another review had the SLabs single arm and it didn’t even support his 34”. They have a an ultrawide mount “coming soon” on the site but its £300! So holding off until this is released.
Can you share a discount code?
Sorry I don't have any current codes.
@@DTSquared No problem, I'm going to wait for a sale.
The only thing keeping me from ordering one of these is that I'd prefer a dark grey mat instead of the black
The "Signature Stealth" mat that I went for is a kind of dark-dusty brown which looks sort of greyish depending on the light angle. I haven't seen the black in real life so not sure what that will actually look like. I guess if nothing else you do at least have the option to change it at some point, and they seem to bring out specials. I'm still teetering on the edge of ordering a spare one just in case.
@@DTSquaredhow do you film your videos while you talk over b roll footage?
Got to learn a little about the desk and also the plight of an abnormally sized human. 😂👍
LOL Glad it was informative 🤣🤣🤣
Normal sized humans lol. I too consider myself a supreme being
Lol We need to stick together. Or at least duck at the same time as we go through low doors.
i bought secret lab chat a few months ago and its good but certainly not worth the 700-800 euro's.
There's certainly a price premium for the name.
@@DTSquared yea its a shame though because honestly there are gaming chairs that cost only 300 that are just as good.
Secretlab, not labs…
Thanks for pointing that out. Description changed (to Secretlab's) I'll change the thumbnail later.
