- In this video I propagate begonias from leaf cuttings with the help of Margot and Lise.

Begonias are divided into different groups. All of the following groups can be propagated from leaves, as shown in this video : cane-stemmed begonias, rex-cultorum begonias, rhizomatous begonias, shrub-like begonias.
The semperflorens and tuberous begonias cannot be propagated in this way.

Wrapping it in cling film means that it is a closed system so there is no need for additional watering until the cling film is removed. You just need to get the volume of water right to start with.
Will this metode work on begonia autumn leaf also? 😀

I just cut a stem with a leaf and put in water it develops roots then I pot it on .
I was given a cutting from a 45 year old plant and iv had it for 8 years and gave many away
some flowers but some haven't .

Hi, thank you for the video. I just dropped my Begonia Maculata during watering and two leaves fell. Luckily, the plant seems to be ok, but I am still triyng to propagate it from leaves so it's not a waste. Thank you :)

@@RoverIAC Hi, honestly? The plant is alive, but hates me. Leaf propagation didn't go well either, currently the plant has like four 5cm leafs. I will try to put it into my paludarium next since B. Tiger paw, Tripartita and Inca night all liked it for propagation.
@@kiksyame1481 I've some cuttings work out and plenty of failures, but have never tried leaf propagation but may still give it a try. But I'm still at the stage of learning not to over water all my plants.
I did this today with some leaves that got damaged during shipping of my new Begonia Autumn Ember. I hope it works! :) Thank you for your video, it was very clear and nice!

@@krystynan5634 yes, they turned out well! Some new leaves grow under the mother leaf so there's always more than what you see growing. I did the experiment three more times. Twice I put too much water so the leaf just rotted out. So I had 50% chance so far. 😊 Good luck!

What is an ideal temperature to keep this at? You briefly mentioned something about keeping it warm, and then mentioned a warm windowsill. A temperature range would be very helpful. Thanks!

Love your videos! I live in northeast Mississippi and a couple of your plants are found wild here in the forest. It’s interesting what’s very common and found growing wild one place is grown as a specimen in other places.

Had great luck with your method even though the mother leaf was probably kept a little colder than you recommended. My problem was that the transplanted new growth suffered significant shock. Any suggestions for transplanting the new growth? Thank you for your excellent presentation!
I'm glad you had success with this method. To reduce transplantation shock, the separated plantlets could be placed back in the box and then the lid gradually removed for longer and longer spells each day. Good luck!

Good morning and thanks for your interest. Begonias, in general, are not high light plants and cuttings are going to need even less light than the parent, as always. So any north facing windowsill works for me. Hope this is helpful.

I've tried this method with leaves from several varieties. After several months, I have lots of roots -- up to 4 inches long -- but no shoots. Will plantlets eventually form? Is there something I can do to induce plantlets instead of just more and longer roots?
Hmmm, it seems to me that you just need to wait longer. The roots come before the leaves

Wow, I commented 7 months ago. It turned into a roller coaster,for me cause the leaf rotted. I tried cutting into one inch squares, heat mat, anti fungal but the heat killed the leaf. I left one small square in the original plastic pie container. So, 7 months later and I have a 2" plant and not sure what but something else is growing from the rot. There are 6 or 7 teeny bits of green growing. Small as a baby's thumb nail.
The smaller you cut the pieces, the more likely they are to rot. Glad it worked out in the end for you.
@@GardeningatDouentza it was with the exact same plant from your video. It was an 8" leaf from an escargot begonia. It started to rot in the plastic pie plate before I cut it up.. But somehow something is growing from the rot. Life is an incredible force. It's unbelievable. Not 100% sure if there are more escargot begonias because absolutely tiny.
When I do this again I will be sure to clean the pie container better. And sterilize the soil by heating it up in the oven. Use less water than I did or remove condensation from the lid if I see an excess.
To anyone trying this... Just keep trying.
Great video - one question. Are the new baby plants still attached to the original parent leaf or does it just 'fall away' when you get to the stage of potting up the up the new plants ?
The old leaf disintegrates after a time. There may be small fragments left, which cannot be removed safely from the babies. This video is 1 of 2 and the next video deals with the removal stage...

Well, I'm trying it on an Escargot begonia. I'm not sure if I put enough water or if it touches the dirt enough but I'm hopeful. I'd post a pic if I could. How much water is recommended?
Hi there. As mentioned in the video, I watered the cuttings once and covered them. They then don't get watered again as they are in a closed system. It remains like that until new plantlets emerge and the lid is taken off. You do need to make sure the cuts touch the earth though!
@@GardeningatDouentza I wasn't sure how much cause I didn't want to over water. There's some condensation on the lid. I think it's a good amount. I used a plastic pie container from a grocery store so it's sealed.
Its been about 2 weeks since I started it. There is white mold growing but I haven't given up all hope. I used a smaller container than in the video but for future people reading this there was about half the lid with condensation. So maybe vent if you see that the first day. Right now, I wiped off the little condensation that was left on the lid then stuck a dry paper towel near the leaf.

How would you do this without using disposable plastic wrap? Plastic manufacturing and disposal is really damaging to the environment. What were the techniques to propagate begonias before plastic film was invented?

Something broke off 6 large leaves from my Bronze leaf red begonia I set out in a planter outside. Will it work outdoors? I live in middle TN where the temps are 70 degrees at night & in the eighties during the day. They get a little morning light, but mostly shade. I couldn’t tell if you wet the soil. Please help!
I have no idea if it will work outdoors but I doubt it. The leaves need humidity that is why I place them in a closed system where the moisture cannot escape and just circulates.

What type of begonia are you trying to propagate? It sounds like it's a type of begonia that can't be propagated by leaf cuttings

Yes! You are right. I don't have much luck growing things from seed, but I guess I should try it! Your way is so much more interesting tho.
One i have a question madam. How much did u sprayed leaf and how much should i spray when it grows in that pot.
The leaf is in a closed system. That means all of the water stays in the closed system and circulates. If you have sprayed too much you will find a lot of condensation on the lid and will need to open it for a while to let some water evaporate. Experience will be your guide in the end.
My region is already high humid, whether the plastic wrap necessary?
Perhaps you don't need it. Just keep an eye on the cuttings' humidity. Goof luck!

Water the pot once and cover. It is then a closed system so there is no need to water again unless the plastic somehow gets removed and it dries out. Remove the covering when you see new leaves developing.

Yes, I do. There isn't much air circulation under the lid.

Hi there. There is no need to water if the cuttings are in an airtight container. That is essentially a closed system. Once removed, or the lid taken off, then you need to water as needed. Hope this helps.

Yes, moistened with a sprayer. Around 3:30 in the video.

Just cut the vein, not the leaf!

Begonia pendula will be perfect in a hanging basket. Here's what you do with your tubers now...
1) Start tubers into growth in March or April at 18°C (64°F)
2) Fill a seed tray 7.5cm (3in) deep with moist sandy potting compost & place tubers on the surface of the compost, hollow side uppermost, 2cm (¾in) apart and 2.5cm (1in) deep
3) When the leaves are showing, pot into individual 10-12.5cm (4-5in) pots or your hanging basket, using a good potting compost.
4) Plants can be hardened off and planted outside after the danger of frost has passed

Bergenia is propagated from root cuttings, division or seed.

Did she water it? I do this for Gloxinia leaves.
Water once and then cover. The leaf should stay in a closed system so the watrer stays in and doesn't need to be replaced until the lid comes off.

As long as the cuttings are in a closed system (covered), they need no water. The water that is there will circulate. You need to get the amount of water right the first time. Some droplets on the inside of the box/cover are fine but it shouldn't be drenched. Once you remove the covering/lid, you will need to water. Hope this helps.

I cut all the way through the vein but not the surrounding tissue.

Rotting is the result of one of three reasons for this...
1) You're using a begonia leaf that isn't suitable for this type of propagation
2) Too many or too deep cuts on the leaf
3) Too much water or humidity trapped in with the leaves

Will it work with begonia angel wing?
Begonia 'Angel Wings' is a cane begonia so cannot be propagated in this way.
Here is how to propagate it (taken from Wiki)...
To propagate them, cut a two-leaf section of stalk 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) from the end using a sharp knife. Peel off the lower leaves, dip in rooting powder, and insert 2 inches (5.1 cm) into potting soil. Moisten with a watering can. After a few days, tug gently on the plant. If it holds, it has grown new roots. Transfer to a larger, regular pot.[2] Can also be started in water until roots grow and then planted.

50% peat 25% perlite and 25 % vermiculite... no soil at all? I think its a bit overdone.. 50% peat through some soil will also be good for drainage and breathing. Peat has the ability to facilitate bio organisms/bacteria. perlite and vermiculite has not.
There are various recipes that can be used.
True, i thought maybe u had some sort of argumentation behind it. Without soil there is no nutes without ferts right? So when u give ferts.. bio or chemical.. the peat or the perlite/vermiculite is useless... Bio ferts with peat/soil (maybe 8% perlite) will be really good. Some start up bacteria to make it complete.. BIO ALL THE WAY
@@Zaagvis I am propagating the begonia in this video. It doesn't need fertiliser. In fact fertiliser will do harm in this process.
