  • In 1971, my father took me to see Evel Knievel jump cars at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. It was a thrill then but looks really cheesey 42 years later. There is no sound on this video.

I am glad to see such a positive response to this video. I am surprised that so many people found it worth watching. I was a big fan of Evel's in the 1970s and like a lot of kids, my brother and I build ramps to try to duplicate his feats on our bicycles. Yes, contrary to warnings, we did try that at home.

I broke two bicycle frames jumping7. The second time, that was it for my Dad. I had to use paper route money and buy the next one.
STILL an EK fan. Glad to see videos like this get posted. Thanks!!!

That had to be the first year Evel started jumping the XR 750. Same gas tank paint job as in the 1971 E.K. movie. By 1972 he changed gas tank paint scheme to more red white and blue. The ski jump ramp makes this a hard jump , looks like Evel nailed it perfectly. Funny to see Evel ride with out a helmet. Great video thanks for sharing

Its just a sign of the times is all .......... This was daring & risky back then & Unseen by most people. Let someone try doing what he did on a big Harley or Triumph like he did with the suspension bottoming completely out on impact and weighing way more than todays enduros & Motocross bikes that are more built for it, Plus this guy didnt take a bad spill a few times & quit, He took a literal beating, internal bleeding multil Bones broken & still get up to say a few words to the audience & was a pure hardass straight shooter tell it like it is hero back in our day.

Evel just sits on the bike and uses up 3/4 of the suspension travel on that Sportster. It is a near miracle miracle he safely landed even once on such a "primitive" set-up....Nothing "cheesy" here. Evel was many things, and not all of them good, but he earned his money on his jumps. Every time he left the ground on one of those things, he put his life at genuine risk even on one of these small "exhibition" jumps. Anyone who ever got to see him perform has a lifetime memory of a true original.

The ramps were covered with a cloth. If you look at about 40 to 42 seconds in, you can see the blue ramp and red cloth hanging on the side.
Here is another video filmed the same night from the other side of the arena. In this one, you can see the red cloth lying on the floor next to the ramp.

As a human being he was the biggest douchebag that I've ever met.
I met Evel in the 90's in Sunnyvale CA
where he lived at the time. Evel was known for getting drunk at local bars
long before noon & walking out on his tab. Evel was addicted to painkillers, alcohol & drugs since nearly killing himself & breaking all those bones during all those stunts, testing, crashes & hundreds of surgeries. He won't be missed !!! Just honest facts.

One can judge a man many ways. I judge him by the thrills and positivity that he gave to millions upon millions around the world.. Read these comments. He touched so many and they have never, ever forgotten it. His many personal failings were his own, but he belonged to his fans and they loved him and still do. In any case, he gave much more than he ever got from his life , and he got a helluva lot.....

@@thatmanstumototours2270 so did Jim Jones, Charles Manson, & our for Father's.
If you met Evel Knievel you would definitely agree he's a major douchebag. No excuses no apologies.
I can judge a man after meeting them.
      Your reality is false.

Something that cracks me up about Evel was his bullshit. He was NOT in a coma for 29 days after Caesars Palace. And his big claim that he was in the hospital for 3 or 4 total years was pure BS...track the time-line of his career, there is no way he was in the hospital anywhere close to that long.

We were young stupid kids back then. We worshiped a guy who in fact was a lousy human being.

We were told about “worshiping” people. That was prob your problem and why the bitter attitude when your “hero” turns out to be human.

Speak for yourself. I didn't watch him for moral guidance. I watched him to see Evel Kneivel. And that is what I saw.

He was a raging, abusive alcoholic who cheated non-stop with hundreds of women, abused his wife & kids, treated people around him like shit, didn't pay bills, beat people up,was a lousy father, etc......THAT'S the reality of the man. He was a hero to kids between 4:30 and 6 pm on Saturdays on Wide World of Sports......the rest of the time, he was a lousy, pompous, self-absorbed jerk. The bravest, toughest Knievel wasn't Evel, wasn't Robbie...it was Linda, who took his shit for way too long.

And as long as Evel fans (fanatics) try to push the myth that this was a halfway decent human being, I'll push back with the truth. The man was a WRECK.

@@stevestarr9769 If you have any new information, please share it. You seem to think people are not aware, after 60 years of books, movies, interviews and articles that Evel was an extremely flawed human being. But that is not why we are here commenting. Lots of shitheels in the world, but few if any made people feel what EK did. And that is what we choose to remember. I can wlk down on the corner and see an abusive, pill popping drunk. I can't walk down there and see Evel Kneivel.

As a kid I absolutely idolised him .
As an adult I realised the truth .
      His life , his rules.
There is often a "hidden story" behind many celebrities who came from obscurity & suddenly had it all.
      He was no different.
