  • This is a catchup video in the VF1000R restoration series covering application of basecoat, decals and clearcoat for the gas tank and fairings. The lower will be covered in a separate how to video, which will take you through the paint process in more detail as well as the finishing stages, which includes application of the flowcoat, final cut & buff.

Cracking job on the paint work, the bike is going to look exceptional when complete, 😎.

Thanks, looking forward to the final paint stages. These colors are awesome and are going to really pop once we do the final polishing, especially the candy blue!

Awesome work MCSR. What a beautiful restoration. Do you have a local tank dent puller by chance? I got a quote from a MC tank PDR professional. I am sure he would do great work but the prices were extremely high. Trying a few things myself in the mean time on some not so great "practice" fuel tanks. Next will be a stud gun. Should be fun. Videos forthcoming. Thanks! Ken

Hi Ken, I know a PDR guy in Oregon who is very good, but not sure how he compares price wise. I’ve got the PDR kit but get mixed results with it. Stud guns are my go to, it’s easier to use and more precise, you just have to accept you’ll be touching up or respraying the tank.

Bought this years ago, still going strong, and ideal size for motorcycle gas tanks.

does it not bother you that the TRAC decal on right fork is applied upside down ?

Yes it bothered me a lot once it was brought to my attention 😣. If you watch the latest video you will see I turned it around. Thanks for the feedback though, it was another viewer who pointed it out and I appreciate that.

@@MCSR52 I watched all 6 parts before commenting, I saw it upside down all the way through every time. for the first 3 i was wondering why you painted parts green on what was supposed to be a factory spec restore, Still the best restoration of a VF1000 i've ever seen. only other thing, from memory top yolk and bars might not be original factory colours ( perhaps in USA) but I remember them being gold and silver. Also considering the amount of money you spent, you even fitted the Euro tank which is much better looking, so i'm surprised you didn't buy a dual headlight, as the dual headlight is the finishing touch every VF1000R needs.

@@elvisburgerking8675 the top yoke was black on 85, gold on 86. I do like the twin headlight option but the subframe for it is different to the square light and trying to find both is difficult, plus I didn’t want to take the front of the bike apart again to switch them over as it’s a big deal. Euro spec tank does make a big difference though.

For the TRAC sticker there is a posting in the community section where I show it being removed and replaced in the correct orientation.

@@MCSR52 I'm not convinced, not that it really matters, I owned 3 from new including one of only 3 RG models in my country, bought and registered in 1990 although manufactured in 1986. I still have 8 of the other VF1000 models in all colours but sold my last R quite a few years ago as with the riding position and 16 inch front wheel, they are not comfortable to ride, so I'm only going from memory, although some photos still exist on old hard drives so i could possibly check on exact original colours, if i could find them, my memories of riding the R versions , you are looking at the bars infront of you all the time, and it just looks wrong, I can't pinpoint it, as I think it's a combination of things, the top yolk, the bars, the brake levers and possible even the bar ends. I never had an RE, they were probably different again, only the RF and RG. the FF and F2F have black everything from yolk to bar end, which is why riding an RF or RG looks different to the colours of other models, from your videos you have a black seat, the only R that had a black seat was the Rothmans RG. yours is an 85 RF with line bored cams and probably a double oil pump, anyway back to the headlight, I can't check anymore, but i'm 99% convinced its a direct swap, the double light and plastic grill underneath was removed in the US due to regulations and replaced with a single unit from FF or FE and plastic trim to fill the gaps and it looks pretty poor in comparison to original design with a double headlight.
