    NOTE:
    Question asked by Daniel was:
What do you think about Dali rubicon 2 vs Opticon 6?
    - small room 3x4 m2
    - 2.50 metres from the listening position
    - I listen to all kind of music
I ANSWERED A SIMILAR QUESTION: Kef LS50 and subwoofer vs Dali Opticon 6 in this video:
    • KEF LS50 + SVS SUBWOOF...
    ---- SUMMARY ------------------
    FLOORSTANDERS
+ Bigger, more convincing sound that fills up the room (higher spl)
+ Provides a more full-range sound (start rolling off around 40-50hz)
+ You could use it for more music genres
+ You could use it for movies - more sub-bass - lots of bass effects
+ Less need for a high-powered amplifier (they’re more efficient by design)
    - Room gain (especially in smaller rooms)
    - Typically lower audio fidelity
    - Typically less rhythmic and agile as good standmounters
    STAND MOUNTERS (BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS)
+ High fidelity sound comes at a lower price
+ Integrates better into small and medium rooms
    + Better rhythmic and timing
+ Sometimes a wider soundstage and better imaging
    + Less drivers to integrate
    - More wattage is needed to drive them
    - Rolls off around the 50-60hz mark...so no good for sub-bass
    - Which means some music genres will sound more convincing on floorstanders
    - Which means movies will typically sound better on floorstanders
    - You need to buy stands (good, acoustically inert stands)

@@olsp.system hello. What is your purpose for the speakers? E.g. Room size, your location in relation to the speakers, what sort of music/movies you listen to, and the exact application? Is it for pleasure or work?

@@olsp.system Hello again. Reason I ask is because I have a mate who is a Focal fanatic. I haven't heard those exact speakers (but I've heard a good few Focals in my time). If you want I can ask him he's heard those speakers?

@@olsp.system hello. Yes I did ask but that guy hadn't come across those. I think because they are active monitors they are intended for professional studio use.
But as I am a musician, I do know another guy in music production who has come across these speakers. He has said to me they are very "spot on" in terms of their detail and imaging - very nice to work with. Quite a forward sound. Very unique bass extension and resolution. But the side mounted radiators made some problems with positioning side by side. Some effort is needed to get them set up right.
To be honest, these two speakers aren't really comparable as one is more for hifi (you'll also need your own amp with the Dalis) and the other one for music production or critical work.
If you're a professional engineer then you definitely wouldn't want those Dalis. Those focals are likely to be alot more accurate but is that what you want? It all comes down to preference.. What speakers have you got now and what speakers have you had success with in the past?

Im using KEF LS50's with my Hegel H90 im getting really nice bass but im thinking about adding an svs sb3000 to get a better lower frequency response, unfortunately 2 subs isn't an option for me .
So its either stick with my ls50's and add a subwoofer or get some dali opticon 6's.
    What do you think?

Hi Tony. Happy to answer your question.
First of all, 4.5x4.5m room sounds very nice for setting up your gear as you can get everything nice and symmetrical. You can also push the speakers away from the wall quite nicely I think.
The Dalis are a great choice seeing as you listen to all those music genres - I think the Dali lineup are one of the most forgiving speakers for music. They all make music sound...well, like music!
So, you are considering the Rubicon 2, Epicon 2 and the Opticon 8? I mean, these are all great speakers, but considering the room size, I wouldn't really recommend the Opticon 8. Have you seen them? They are gigantic..they are really designed to produce high SPL over anything. Sure, they are also nicely detailed, but the Epicons will blow them away for quality. If your room were larger..maybe 50% larger or so..then the Opticon 8 would probably be more compelling and better value for the money. They need to play quite loud to sound their best.
I think it really comes down to the Epicons vs Rubicons partnered with those subs. I think best in terms of the value proposition would be the Rubicons. The Epicons are a lot more money and you get a little bit in return but not much.
However...the Epicons blow the Rubicons away for looks in my opinion. I love the Ruby Macassar colour myself....If had the money, I'd buy a pair of Epicons right away! They also sound fantastic - in terms of resolution, they almost have the resolution of the B&W 8 series standmount (the ones with the diamond tweeters). The B&W has a bit more detail, but for me it's not as enjoyable as the Epicon 2 for sure, and the bass of the B&W 8 series is a bit lean which might not suit all those genres.
I hope this answers your question Tony!
Let me know what you decide to buy!...Sounds like you've got a killer budget mate - I am jealous hehe

    Hi there.
I know, it is pretty old (2years) thread.
However, it still could be a beneficial for some some lads, but Daniel.
Have a kinda similar problem size-wise with my living room.
It is wider ok - around 5 metres by let say 3 m.
    Quite tall though.
    I'd say, closer to 3 m.
I've enjoyed a good number of speakers ( still keeps them )
From the leanest in bass but with the nicest sound stage PMC DB1i through bassy Monitor Audio gold 100 5g, ProAc Tablette 2000 up to Dali Rubicon 2.
Also, I had floor standers - Piega classic 5.0
I arrange ( willy-nilly ) my speakers the way they firing across shorter size, but it gives me a lot of space out of symmetrically placed room corners and enough space for a sub - Monitor Audio RSW12.
I married them ( with subwoofer ) pretty seamlessly thanks to bass management and Dirac live implemented in my NAD C658.
The really important thing left to be solved is a short distance to the wall behind me.
The plan is to use three flat sound absorption panels.
Two, behind the loudspeakers and third behind me.
    That's the plan.
    What would you say ?

    • @propercushty
      @propercushty  ปีที่แล้ว +2

i'd say there's probably going to be alot of bass build up behind you judging by how your room is set up. at the very least you're going to need some thick bass traps behind you - in my estimation they'd have to be at last 3 or 4 inches thick if you really want to make a difference and improve the bass in the room.
However, don't got too crazy on absorption panels because you can overabsorb the trebles and your music will just sound dead. You can always by wooden panels or add planks of wood to your absorption panels if you want to continue absorbing bass and preserve your treble frequencies.
You can also think about a mixture between bass traps and diffusion panesl at the back of the room if you want your room to sound a little bigger. However, you should really leave some room behind you if you're going to use diffusion panels.
The key is experimentation though because each room is different and I don't know your furniture.
My guess is your room layout isn't helping because your speakers are firing against the width of the room (not recommended if you speak to an acoustician).
But I do understand these are the constraints that we live by and we can never achieve 100% perfection so you just gotta do what you gotta do.
      Wishing you the best buddy.

      Hi again.
Might sounds like kinda self-comforting, but...
Am I actually sitting and the end/beginning of standing wave of room resonance ?
If yes, the air pressure is the lowest, isn't it ?
The other thing is I did a lot of positive changes by measuring room and using Dirac Live correction ( full band version )
      What do you think ?

In a small room, he's better off with infinite baffle (sealed cabinet), something like Harbeth or ATC.
The Rubicon 2 need some breathing space. They sound great but need an amp with clean current.

Hello from Ukraine. I wanted to get an answer to this question, but I was not given such a reasoned answer as I heard from you. Thank you very much for your work. But I have more questions: 1. Opticon 6 ($1200 displayed in the store) vs Opticon 6mk2 ($1900 closed box). 2.This is a bad amp choice : Rega Elex-R, Cambridge Audio CXA 81, Marantz 8006? Is it better to buy second-hand amplifiers from your list? I have now Dali Zensor 3+NAD D3020+ Bluesound Node2i. A room of 45m2 in which the listening area of 16m2 is separated by a sofa. I listen to rock, electronic music, classical, jazz. Thank you.

    • @propercushty
      @propercushty  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello, happy to answer your question as best I can.
Opticon 6 vs 6mk2 -> it depends - I think you won't find there is a huge difference in the audio quality between these two speakers, but the balance between bass, mids and treble is a bit more conservative with the mk2. The original version is a bit more 'rock concert' which is not a bad thing. You can always customise the sound with DSP to make it sound however you like.
In terms of amplifiers, if you want a 'no joke' amplifier, then what I would recommend at the moment is a Hypex NC252 or NC500 to power your speakers. Even better, try and get the monoblock versions of these and have a dedicated amplifier for each speaker. You have quite a large area to fill, so I'd make sure you get some powerful amplification.
      MY TOP RECOMMENDATION
Buy 2 of these (two monoblock power amplifiers):
      www.audiophonics.fr/en/power-amplifier/audiophonics-mpa-m500nc-mono-amplifier-class-d-ncore-1x500w-4-ohm-p-14319.html
Buy this DAC with volume control
      www.audiophonics.fr/en/dac-with-volume/topping-d50s-dac-2x-es9038q2m-xmos-u208-bluetooth-50-ldac-32bit-768khz-dsd512-silver-p-14046.html
If you want slightly better, you can try and find versions of the above which have balanced XLR connectors. But RCA should be fine under most circumstances.
This will be one of the best systems you can buy on the market today - you would have to spend thousands more to get slightly better audio quality.
      Hope this helps

@@propercushty Thank you for your time. You helped save me money! I do not have enough knowledge to assemble the HYPEX amplifier on my own. I will study this issue. The link to DAC is wrong. What is the total budget for the HYPEX option? My amplifier budget is $1500. What would you recommend number 2 after HYPEX. We don't have the practice of getting an amplifier to try out in our country ((. At >$2000 I can only try Naim Nait XS 2. Others can only buy blindly.

    • @propercushty
      @propercushty  2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@user-iw7ji8cz9r The hypex amplifiers are built to order - you do not have to build them.
You can buy from websites like audiophonics, nordacoustics, kjfaudio, apollon audio.
These websites usually have 14-30 days money back guarantees which means you can return them if they are not for you.
You will also find many of these options on eBay which offers you a returns policy.
If you are buy power amplifiers that support XLR, then you should try buying a DAC which supports XLR.
If you are buying power amplifiers with RCA connections, then you should look for the DACs with RCA connections.
The Topping D50 does support RCA, so you should be fine. If you want balanced XLR, then some DACs also support this (like the Topping D90). Another pro-level DAC is the RME ADI-2 .. a bit more expensive but one of the best you can buy today.
By the way, XLR is a more professional level connection, but RCA should be fine in the home environment, especially if the cable lengths are short (1-2m is fine). It is up to you which you choose. These days, I prefer XLR where possible.
I think brands like Naim are way too overpriced but alot of people like them. Only way to know is to test them!
Quite a good website to check out reviews is audiosciencereview - many of these pieces of equipment are measured there so you can objectively compare them before you purchase.
      Hope this helps
