A24 is the only studio that is not making sequels and reboots and people want something fresh. Their movies are about as good as what you see at an independent film festival and all they do is pick, choose and distribute.
For me its not just the studio ghibli tag its if Hayao Miyazaki was the director. all his movies are the foundation of the studio. there is a massive difference from say castle in the sky and tales from earthsea. same studio but different directors and wildly different movies.
Ex machina, the green knight, the lighthouse, i never noticed they were the same studio, but they all shared a unique common denominator i did notice: they sat with me long after i left the cinema. Knowinf this i'll definetly seek a24 movies from now.

Years ago I didn’t seek out A24 films. I just chose what I wanted to watch, and noticed that a lot of what I loved came from the same distributor. THEN I sought out A24 films.
Yeah that's how it works with anything. How would you seek out A24 films years ago before you even knew who they were? Of course you'll start seeking them out only after you realize they consistently put out movies that you like.
When I see the name A24, the first thing that comes to mind for me is being able to describe it as a "Psychological aesthetic" or "Psychedelic-wave," or perhaps even as "One collective" edit:I modified my comment in order to make them stop barking.
The lighting isnt something special to movies. But like how character driven, or as you said it psychological, it feels, it is consistant. People like consistancy. One director cant make enough movies, and a lot of directors do not tend to be consistent as much as well. Also people got too lazy to remember 30 directors they like, because movies now are mostly seen as just entertainment. Hence a studio is now what we look at. It so happens that A24 is the most consistent in bringing character driven personal drama, with a touch of weirdness so people who like movies can actually say they have good taste. It's good marketing for sure. And thats how they started. Marketing.
They definitely have popularity as a studio, but this isn’t the first time people have rallied behind movies in that way. Annapurna had a strong following, as did Miramax in the 90s. A24 is just the latest.
Most movies that people label as "A24 movies" were not even produced by A24 but merely distributed by them, Spring Breakers being one example of them. They do not have creative input in those movies and they don't even look similar.

Totally agree, this video is dumb by not taking that into account. It's more A24 producing/buying a movie because it falls into their style rather than A24 forcing filmmakers to make movies that follow their style.
Describing Spring Breakers as ‘a Britney Spears video directed by Gasper Noe’ is simultaneously the most insane series of words that I have ever heard and the most accurate summary of the movie itself. Harmony Korine is a crazy person and I love him for it.
Unfortunately, the movie itself is lacking. Like, imo it felt like "all style" but hardly any "substance" (which can be interesting in itself but to me keeps a film from being "great" instead of merely, at best, good).
A24 films have a reputation for their unique and visually striking style. No, people perceive A24 as some sort of a "auteur" force simply because of the marketing blitz they've put on, often times they simply acquire and distribute them once they are full made and finished. They premiere at a festival and A24 scoops in and buys it and slaps their logo on it. But even if they did produce them do you really think a studio like A24 would force true auteurs into putting in a "A24" signature stamp? No, they would just walk out. What the studio does is to give the filmmakers as much freedom as possible to make their true visions come true.
This right here, I was thinking the same thing, I think A24 is drawn more to that style of filmaking vs the other way around which is stll fantastic and refreshing. It like we put our trust in A24 to have back a quality movie
Exactly. They should be appreciated for basically the same reason New Hollywood producers were, but people are on their nuts so hard they barely give credit to the actual filmmakers.

I think A24 has a very specific brand that they know people like. They’ve really solidified their place in the market and people are eager to see what they’re going to do next. Their marketing and promotion is top notch for sure.
"Imagine 10 years ago watching for a studio, that'd be crazy." So I guess the 2000's with Paramount Vantage, Fox Searchlight, and Focus Features didn't happen? They rocked the scene in the 2000s much the same way A24 is perceived now. Newline Cinema and Orion before that of the 80's. Dimensions and Touchstone of the 90's.
The point being made about A24 isn't just that they've had a bunch of hit movies but that there is very deliberate purpose in keeping to overarching stylistic choices. I'd relate that to music labels, how we'd associate Sub Pop or 4AD with specific kinds of artist. I can't say I've ever felt that way about Focus, Touchstone or New Line. It's not about having a run of good movies, but of something tying them all together that you come to expect with some certainty.
What I've noticed with A24 productions is that they are an easy passage from mainstream to a more deep and psychological way of telling stories that helps people who are not accustomed to artistic movies or are afraid of more sophisticated art styles.

I think also that A24 films tend to stay with me long after the film. They are so striking and unanimously creative, it feels super detail oriented and created with passion instead of money in mind
Miramax which you included in the video was literally an example of another studio that had the same type of draw. Oddly Disney who bought them is another example of a studio people used to go see movies from based on the studio's brand.
I love how it’s completely the other way around in video game world where rockstar, bethesda, Ubisoft are the main draws for the game and people like Hideo Kojima are exceptions where people buy the game for a person and not a studio.
Ex Machina is simply one of the best films I've ever seen. As a prgrommer hobbyist, i really appreciate it and all the thought processes that it portrays. Plus the cast, cinematography, the lighting, the music score...brilliant.
Its cause its definitely AI. Almost certain its written by AI too. No one pronounces a24 as “eh, 24” except for computers that struggle to recreate human inflections
the whole video screams ai. the script definitely has way too many similarities to Vox' video on A24, the narration is done by a bot and the sound design is just horrible (what in the actual heck is this music playing in the background)

First I want to say that I really enjoyed this video essay, it's informative and it help give me a perspective about A24 that I didn't entertain before, but what I really liked about this video is how you used ti to market your LUTs it made me realize that I could do the same thing for my clothing brand. I thik it's brilliant because you serve the viewer and your brand. It's not just sell, sell, sell for the sake of commerce, it's thoughtful and giving back to the community. Keep up the great work!
Because they are made by different filmmakers with various creative approaches and the name of distribution company doesn't matter. It's quite hilarious and at the same time very depressing, how many people are thinking that A24 is the creator of all the movies they distribute.
Is it really THAT expensive and hard to use real human narrators instead of these AI ones? These really aren't good enough yet. My ears are bleeding after 2 minutes of listening to this robotic crap.
Agreed Neon releases some great films as well. Really there’s quite a few smaller outfits that specialize in good films. Meanwhile you have bigger stars complaining that there isn’t a market in Hollywood for a 3 million to 30 million dollar film from the big distributors. I would argue that there is a market, but they don’t want to pay a big name actor for that film. These days I stay away from almost products from the big companies as it’s almost always a waste of my money if I’m going to the theater. (I’ll just stream those movies from home) but I will make an effort for a “neon”, a24, blumhouse, or a few other companies as well. But it’s also not too hard to spot decent films, you’ll hear about them through the smaller festivals ect.
Not to be rude, but the listicle part of the video made negative amounts of sense. None of those numbered reasons are likely to produce any kind of similarity, in fact they are far more likely to produce differences.
Beau is Afraid looks nothing like Priscilla which looks nothing like Spring Breakers which looks nothing like The Lighthouse which looks nothing like Everything Everywhere All At Once which looks nothing like Moonlight which looks nothing like You Hurt My Feelings which looks nothing like The Zone of Interest which looks nothing like Dicks: The Musical. There's no such thing as an "A24" look because they're a distribution studio that happens to produce some of the films they release. Stop trying to push for an "A24" look, that diminishes the vastly different creatives that behind these films.
Can you please add the CC option to show film titles as they appear on screen? I remember similar channels implementing it during the EveryFrameAPainting days and it's nice to have that option.
I haven't really thought about it but I like almost anything A24 brings out. They push the boundaries of film and TV by creating unique and interesting pieces of art for everyone to enjoy. And like someone else mentioned, they are pretty much the only studio that seems to care more about the art form over the profit taking. Funny enough, that kind of mindset makes studios the most money lol
A24 also focused early on producing or investing in films that had low production budgets, a smart tactic I wish other studios would adopt. Movies don’t need to be expensive, and just because a movie has a $300 million production budget doesn’t mean it’s going to be good, or good to look at.

I stopped after 2 minutes, because I have not seen the movie. But this is a very interesting view! I have even added A24 logo as a watermark of top quality in one of my films! However, next to it I also added many others, incl. Paramount. Why? Because they also have a true heritage, just different. All these companies operate on different level in a different niche. So, it's not just one outlaw. IMO is more about big and small fishes. Right now there is a demand on A24, before it wasn't? Great video! Thanks!
I remember there being a time in the early 90s when I would get excited for certain studios. Orion, United Artists, Miramax, Bruckheimer Films, Dreamworks, Icon, MGM, and 20th Century Fox. Sometimes thats what got me to stay on HBO because the other option was to flip to the tv guide channel or find the physical tv guide booklet. Sometimes those wouldnt be helpful. Then the opening credits would get me keep me hooked or not.
My thoughts exactly. Even the storytelling is very selfsame. Not a creative, open studio at all. The fact they have many genres of films (terror, suspense, comedy, action) does not imply variety of filmmaking and artistic project at all. True differences run deeper than genre distinction.

You're missing the point... A24 is ACTUALLY LETTING THEIR CREATORS CREATE!!! They don't get in the way of the filmmakers the way other studios do, and that's why the company is blowing up the way it is... So yes they do deserve A LOT of credit for the way they handle the movies they distribute and produce.

Love Lies Bleeding looks completely different to The Witch which looks completely different to Green Knight which looks completely different to Aftersun which looks completely different to High Life - I mean, I could go on. They're consistently good movies, yes, but they all look TOTALLY different, and that's because of the creative minds behind each movie. A24 allowing creators to follow through with their unique vision is commendable, but the individual aesthetic of each project has little to do with the studio releasing the movie.
I think the most important thing is that A24 movies feel unique and tell new stories. Especially right now we're every movie is a sequel/prequel/remake or a biography of a famous person
I’ve been watching A24 films since spring breakers but back then I didn’t really pay attention to the fact it was made by A24. It wasn’t until Moonlight where I really established myself as a A24 fan. Then I went back and looked at there filmography and noticed I liked a lot of there films threw the years. And now unfortunately I’m a A24 fan boy and that stamp alone will cause me to give any film from them a chance. I’ve seen probably 90% of A24 films released I just enjoy the films they choose majority of the time. Neon is also another film studio that I like seeing before the film starts.
All along it wasn't Tarantino trying to slip in references to his obsession with dirty feet. Instead, he was thinking of movie premises that would fit around his filmography of dirty feet. Kill bill wasn't a story about a woman seeking revenge. The movie was actually about the struggles feet faced, while the woman who they belonged to, sought revenge.
I think the lighting design and artistic look of A24 produced films does come down the changing and growing of styles by filmmakers, in the coming decades of film I believe we will see a rise (and have already seen the growth) of stylized look and nontypical art design.
An incredibly weird decision to say all A24 movies are made to look similar at 1:05, but then show three films, two of which are by the same director and cinematographer. They look similar because they’re quite literally the same creative team. It’s not the studio. I just put out a video a few days before this one specifically about the “A24 look” and how it’s not real. It doesn’t exist. A24 isn’t mandating aesthetics. It is the work of the filmmakers. Sure, they lean towards a certain style when they buy and distribute, but A24 isn’t the mastermind behind the look of the films and giving them all that credit is a disservice to the filmmakers who usually make these films without the help of A24 in the first place. I’ve grown very tired of this A24 look phenomenon. It’s not an A24 look. There are tons of films by A24 that do not look like “A24” films, and tons from other studios that do.

Moonlight was not produced by A24 - the movie was produced by Pastel (Adele Romanski) - later on Plan B (Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner) got onboard - some more money were put in and the movie went back into post-production for some final touches - some of the financing was handled by A24 but not produced by them.
@@willy4819 Putting the money is called financier, not producer. Have you seen an A24 producer or rep to accept the academy award for "best film" for Moonlight? No, because the "best film" award is handed to the producer of the film. Big difference between a Producer and Executive Producer (a credit often given to financiers or representatives of the distribution company). There are Associate Producers, Line Producers, Co-Producers or Executive Producers, to name a few and none of them make you the producer of the film.
@@JerryVanSouth IMDB says many things. As an example: IMDB lists that the budget for Moonlight was 4 mil which is not true. It was actually 1.4. The acquisition price was 4 million. That is not a production budget. And that was stated by Jenkins in multiple interviews and Q&A prior to the Academy Awards. And if you would work in film and understand what IMDB is and what is it used for, maybe you would not have such a hard time navigating the informations presented / listed there. IMDB is not and was never the most reliable place to gather info about a project for film professionals. It's a good stop but not accurate at all. Cheers

OH MY GOSH! I had no idea "Everything everywhere all at once" was a movie made by A24. I'm going to watch some more of their productions and might just end up being one of those hardcore fans! Awesome!!
I just see lots of Wong Kar Wai/Christopher Doyle style of lighting and mood. Even in “Moonlight” and “Everywhere” I spotted many frames and shots (especially the step printing sequence) that looked directly inspired by “In the Mood for Love”, “Fallen Angels”, and “Happy Together”.
I remember being excited to watch anything by HBO and Miramax back when they were putting out quality content. These days Netflix originals, especially their documentaries are an instant go-to.
For anyone else wondering, there are other actual good studios/distribution companies out there that are just as good and/or if not better than A24. Here's a few to check out if you are interested... - NEON - SpectreVision - Oscilloscope Laboratories HD - Magnet - The Criterion Collection - Magnolia - IFC - Strand Releasing - Cohen Media Group - Anapurna -Fox Searchlight Feel free to add some others if you know of any good ones
I think it's key that they're a studio that (so far) have let filmmakers create a coherent artistic vision. Nothing feels designed by committee. And audiences respond to that, if given a chance to. Something similar happened with the Andor TV series. Disney had little confidence in it because it didn't feature any characters shoehorned in from the original Star Wars films, so they let Tony Gilroy just run with his artistic vision. The result is something that could easily, oddly, have fit right into the A24 catalogue. Hope we see a lot more of this. (Back in the day the Miramax logo usually signified a great film was about to begin. And today New Line Cinema can be pretty creative and daring.
Fun fact. Many people arrange their dvd/bluray collections in alphabetical order. I arrange them by producer/distributor company, so yeah, I am one of those that in the past would recommend the movie as: it stars... And was made by.... So it gotta be good.
I watched The Zone of Interest yesterday and it fits the vibe you're describing perfectly. It was so disturbing, that the light was so beautiful and simultaniously hinted at these horrors.
You forgot to mention it was the only studio not mentioned in the writer/actor strike. Let me correct myself, it was mention as an example of fair pay throughout the production and providing creative freedom to writers and directors. Maybe one day corporate greed will get to them and rot the entire thing
Very well made video. I have watched & loved many A24 movies, but didn't realize THAT was the common factor. Neither did i know about this phenomenon. Good to know.
CAROLCO was a sign of a good movie. Carolco produced The first two Rambo movies, first two Terminator movies, Totall Recall, Basic Instinct, Universal Soldier, Stargate, Red Heat, Jacob's Ladder, Cliffhanger, Showgirls. I don't think that A24 will have such iconic movies and that caliber stars.

No, people perceive A24 as some sort of a "auteur" force simply because of the marketing blitz they've put on, often times they simply acquire and distribute them once they are full made and finished. They premiere at a festival and A24 scoops in and buys it and slaps their logo on it. But even if they did produce them do you really think a studio like A24 would force true auteurs into putting in a "A24" signature stamp? No, they would just walk out. What the studio does is to give the filmmakers as much freedom as possible to make their true visions come true.
More than anything, A24 are world class curators who respect the art of cinema and the filmmakers behind it. They get behind the best, simple as that.

The point being made about A24 isn't just that they've had a bunch of hit movies but that there is very deliberate purpose in keeping to overarching stylistic choices. I'd relate that to music labels, how we'd associate Sub Pop or 4AD with specific kinds of artist. I can't say I've ever felt that way about Focus, Touchstone or New Line. It's not about having a run of good movies, but of something tying them all together that you come to expect with some certainty.

I used to think I liked his movies for the non-linear storytelling... But now that I'm older, I realize the truth.
What I've noticed with A24 productions is that they are an easy passage from mainstream to a more deep and psychological way of telling stories that helps people who are not accustomed to artistic movies or are afraid of more sophisticated art styles.
So many movies in this video that i had no clue were from A24. I really like their aesthetic and stories. It's new and refreshing!

I think also that A24 films tend to stay with me long after the film. They are so striking and unanimously creative, it feels super detail oriented and created with passion instead of money in mind

First I want to say that I really enjoyed this video essay, it's informative and it help give me a perspective about A24 that I didn't entertain before, but what I really liked about this video is how you used ti to market your LUTs it made me realize that I could do the same thing for my clothing brand. I love lot of movies come out from Neon as well. For 90’s, it was Miramax followed by Paramount indie film division, Fox Searchlight, Artisan Films.
Agreed Neon releases some great films as well. Really there’s quite a few smaller outfits that specialize in good films.
Meanwhile you have bigger stars complaining that there isn’t a market in Hollywood for a 3 million to 30 million dollar film from the big distributors.
I would argue that there is a market, but they don’t want to pay a big name actor for that film.
These days I stay away from almost products from the big companies as it’s almost always a waste of my money if I’m going to the theater. (I’ll just stream those movies from home) but I will make an effort for a “neon”, a24, blumhouse, or a few other companies as well.
But it’s also not too hard to spot decent films, you’ll hear about them through the smaller festivals ect.
I did the same with Focus Feature movies. As a production company they had a style as well especially in the 2000's

Not to be rude, but the listicle part of the video made negative amounts of sense. None of those numbered reasons are likely to produce any kind of similarity, in fact they are far more likely to produce differences.
I used to watch some animations because of the studio. Back in the day, I would watch anything by Pixar, and I still watch anything by Studio Ghibli.

I haven't really thought about it but I like almost anything A24 brings out. They push the boundaries of film and TV by creating unique and interesting pieces of art for everyone to enjoy. And like someone else mentioned, they are pretty much the only studio that seems to care more about the art form over the profit taking. Funny enough, that kind of mindset makes studios the most money lol

A24 also focused early on producing or investing in films that had low production budgets, a smart tactic I wish other studios would adopt. Movies don’t need to be expensive, and just because a movie has a $300 million production budget doesn’t mean it’s going to be good, or good to look at.

However, next to it I also added many others, incl. Paramount. Why? Because they also have a true heritage, just different. All these companies operate on different level in a different niche. I remember there being a time in the early 90s when I would get excited for certain studios. Orion, United Artists, Miramax, Bruckheimer Films, Dreamworks, Icon, MGM, and 20th Century Fox. Sometimes thats what got me to stay on HBO because the other option was to flip to the tv guide channel or find the physical tv guide booklet. Sometimes those wouldnt be helpful. Then the opening credits would get me keep me hooked or not.
#1 Artistic Vision is a contradiction. Distinct artistic visions would lead to movies that differ in their looks, not ones that share an aesthetic.
My thoughts exactly. Even the storytelling is very selfsame. Not a creative, open studio at all. The fact they have many genres of films (terror, suspense, comedy, action) does not imply variety of filmmaking and artistic project at all. True differences run deeper than genre distinction.

Love Lies Bleeding looks completely different to The Witch which looks completely different to Green Knight which looks completely different to Aftersun which looks completely different to High Life - I mean, I could go on. They're consistently good movies, yes, but they all look TOTALLY different, and that's because of the creative minds behind each movie. A24 allowing creators to follow through with their unique vision is commendable, but the individual aesthetic of each project has little to do with the studio releasing the movie.
I think the most important thing is that A24 movies feel unique and tell new stories.

I’ve been watching A24 films since spring breakers but back then I didn’t really pay attention to the fact it was made by A24. It wasn’t until Moonlight where I really established myself as a A24 fan. Then I went back and looked at there filmography and noticed I liked a lot of there films threw the years. And now unfortunately I’m a A24 fan boy and that stamp alone will cause me to give any film from them a chance. I’ve seen probably 90% of A24 films released I just enjoy the films they choose majority of the time. Neon is also another film studio that I like seeing before the film starts.
A24's whole aesthetic really is just "Gaspar Noe film with slightly more plot and slightly less sexual violence"
All along it wasn't Tarantino trying to slip in references to his obsession with dirty feet. Instead, he was thinking of movie premises that would fit around his filmography of dirty feet. Kill bill wasn't a story about a woman seeking revenge. The movie was actually about the struggles feet faced, while the woman who they belonged to, sought revenge.

I think the lighting design and artistic look of A24 produced films does come down the changing and growing of styles by filmmakers, in the coming decades of film I believe we will see a rise (and have already seen the growth) of stylized look and nontypical art design.
An incredibly weird decision to say all A24 movies are made to look similar at 1:05, but then show three films, two of which are by the same director and cinematographer. They look similar because they’re quite literally the same creative team. It’s not the studio.
I just put out a video a few days before this one specifically about the “A24 look” and how it’s not real. It doesn’t exist. A24 isn’t mandating aesthetics. It is the work of the filmmakers. Sure, they lean towards a certain style when they buy and distribute, but A24 isn’t the mastermind behind the look of the films and giving them all that credit is a disservice to the filmmakers who usually make these films without the help of A24 in the first place.

Moonlight was not produced by A24 - the movie was produced by Pastel (Adele Romanski) - later on Plan B (Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner) got onboard - some more money were put in and the movie went back into post-production for some final touches - some of the financing was handled by A24 but not produced by them.
Well, IMDB says otherwise but I think you know better than them for sure …

No, because the "best film" award is handed to the producer of the film. Big difference between a Producer and Executive Producer (a credit often given to financiers or representatives of the distribution company). There are Associate Producers, Line Producers, Co-Producers or Executive Producers, to name a few and none of them make you the producer of the film.
@@JerryVanSouth IMDB says many things. As an example: IMDB lists that the budget for Moonlight was 4 mil which is not true. It was actually 1.4. The acquisition price was 4 million. That is not a production budget. And that was stated by Jenkins in multiple interviews and Q&A prior to the Academy Awards.
And if you would work in film and understand what IMDB is and what is it used for, maybe you would not have such a hard time navigating the informations presented / listed there. IMDB is not and was never the most reliable place to gather info about a project for film professionals. It's a good stop but not accurate at all. Cheers

I've only recently heard of A24 from Hideo Kojima. Apparently, they will be the ones making the Death Stranding movie.
I just see lots of Wong Kar Wai/Christopher Doyle style of lighting and mood. Even in “Moonlight” and “Everywhere” I spotted many frames and shots (especially the step printing sequence) that looked directly inspired by “In the Mood for Love”, “Fallen Angels”, and “Happy Together”.
I remember being excited to watch anything by HBO and Miramax back when they were putting out quality content. These days Netflix originals, especially their documentaries are an instant go-to.

ive always liked a24 creative direction, really enjoyed the green knight
I think it's key that they're a studio that (so far) have let filmmakers create a coherent artistic vision. Nothing feels designed by committee. And audiences respond to that, if given a chance to. Something similar happened with the Andor TV series. Disney had little confidence in it because it didn't feature any characters shoehorned in from the original Star Wars films, so they let Tony Gilroy just run with his artistic vision. The result is something that could easily, oddly, have fit right into the A24 catalogue.
Hope we see a lot more of this. (Back in the day the Miramax logo usually signified a great film was about to begin. And today New Line Cinema can be pretty creative and daring.
Fun fact. Many people arrange their dvd/bluray collections in alphabetical order. I arrange them by producer/distributor company, so yeah, I am one of those that in the past would recommend the movie as: it stars... And was made by.... So it gotta be good.

CAROLCO was a sign of a good movie. Carolco produced The first two Rambo movies, first two Terminator movies, Totall Recall, Basic Instinct, Universal Soldier, Stargate, Red Heat, Jacob's Ladder, Cliffhanger, Showgirls. I don't think that A24 will have such iconic movies and that caliber stars.
