I think one way of thinking about it is that it is hard to let go of something you are good at. Maverick refusing a promotion can is what you layed out but also him think "Well then what?" a sense of if he is not doing what he wants to or is good at what is the point. What is the next step. Lots of interesting themes in a movie about flying around.
Pretty much. It's about meaning, which is usually attached to what you want to do, are good at, can get paid doing and what benefits others (basically the Japanese concept of Ikigai). To be robbed of that is to be robbed of meaning which, as you wrote, is akin to missing the point of existence.
@@CynicalWarlock which to me this idea kinda isn't explored a lot. What does someone do in life? Why do they continue to do anything thing? It is such an interesting themes that is always interesting to explore.
@@Knight1029 Existentialism is an evergreen topic, yes. The idea of combating nihilism with some kind of purpose that you forge for yourself. Can definitely write a book about the nihilism part.
Maverick was never promoted into a commanding position, because he is not a good teacher and he has lousy people skills, plus a tendency towards insubordination. Plus, he is not reliable becaue he follows orders only if they suit him. It's a miracle that he made it into a test pilot program.
Great review man - thoroughly enjoyed it and made me see a few things about TG:M I hadn't really thought about. I'm looking forward to hearing more of your stuff!
@@39hircvv Yeah, I saw one of those pilot react videos, recently. The fact that it's legit makes the film that much cooler. I suppose Tom Cruise wouldn't have gone through this much trouble for the film, just to portray outlandish nonsense.
OMG! I’m after my dinner, finished cleaning dishes, and want to start playing, and got info pop-up! Lock have new movie! He’s alive! And why it is a movie about movie that is sequel of homoerotic classic from 1986!

We need more movies like this. To empower young men again. Our generation's confidence is being destroyed at every corner, that's why military recruitment is so low. There is little self confidence in men, nor respect. Movies like these change that.
Masculin values? Maverick is clearly incapable of doing anything other than flying jets in his life. His social relationship and attutude at works are a hot mess, to an extent that he is totally unable to hold down a long term couple relationship and it takes the constant influence of his best friend turned admiral to keep him in a cockpit. He has been in the military for decades and he is STILL unable to follow orders and not destroy a multi million prototype plane that is owned by the US taxpayers. If anything, Maverick is an unhinged loser who is lucky to have a very good friend with influence. He is NOT a role model for the male youth.
Come on, man, you gotta try harder than that. Conveniently omitting how Maverick's antics made the mission possible, in the first place - and probably saved a bunch of lives in the process - ignoring the fact that I touched on the dark sides of these traits... You even watch the video?
Probably one of the best movie reviews I have ever seen. Very nice work!!!
Thank you.

Correction. The pilots do fly that low
In a war in the very south of south américa a countrys FFAA used flying low to avoid radars

Agreed. Like it or not, it's men - with all their faults - that move society forward. Turning against them just sets everyone back, for no reason.
