Loving the channel Just bought my first bike computer after many years without one and went for the bolt Very interested in a video on the varia radar especially when used with a bolt Nice too see genuine reviews and not reviews from people that haven’t spent their own money
Thanks Ma Wi. I’m rather shooting my bolt (ha) with this but I LOVE my Varia. You would not believe how much value it adds to the whole riding experience. Until I got one I couldn’t have predicted this (even I bought one cos DCR said this was the case). Video definitely on the way.
The reason I chose the Bolt over the 530 was the bigger size of the text despite its smaller screen. The Garmin wastes that beautiful big screen with tiny text comparable to my old Edge 500 - even on pages with few data fields. MAMILs with ageing vision will appreciate the Bolt. Great video, you’re channel deserves to grow way bigger.
I just switched back to the Bolt because of the Strava Live Segment differences between the two. With the Garmin you cannot see your current time on a segment. You can only see the ahead or behind time. That is completely dependent on accuracy of the GPS at the time. Unacceptable. And you cannot choose which segment you want to see on the Garmin. Sometimes there are shorter segments within much larger segments. With Wahoo you can easily switch between segments and even look at segments you’ve just completed (with the corresponding times). I couldn’t find that option with the Garmin.
Hi Bikegeek - you've really gone into detail there. Thanks for that. I'll take a look the next time I'm on a segment. I'll be honest, whilst I have one starred segment near me, I don't use the feature a lot at the moment. I can see if I really got back into training and was going up to the hills, I'd use the feature more.
I really love your sense of humor, keep it up... and thank you for your review and perspective, that was insightful. I'm new a this so this may be obvious.... does the Bolt V2 and Garmin 530 have voice navigation, or do the units just notify you with a beep of an upcoming change of direction, and then you have to view the screen to see what turn is coming up next? Thank you!
9:52 what's the closest distance you can zoom in in these bicycle computers? I have a basic iGPSPORT igs620 bike computer which does have basic navigation but the closest I can zoom in is 125m and sometimes while doing some MTB courses I feel like I'd appreciate a little more of zoom level when trails have many crossings nearby each other, maybe it's because of the lack of panning, or maybe because sometimes the course doesn't line up perfectly with the bearing, does that can happen here as well? From what I've seen the bearing is always in line with the course, but not sure if a file from a different GPS can cause that issue here as well on these computers.
I've just tried my Edge 530 and that Zooms in to 5m (i.e. the little scale marker is for 5m). It has 5m, 8m, 12m, 20m, 30m, 50m, 80, 120m. The 530 now has a dedicated MTB map view, as well as some sort of integration with the Trailforks app that shows specific trail turn data. I've used in for mountain biking precisely one (I'm not a mountain biker) but I was impressed with the trail directions that kept flashing up. We were riding in an area with trails kriss krossing one another and we largely stuck to our intended trails...
Great video! I wish i watched it before a got the bolt! Really disappointed with the lack turn by turn navigation! Do i have to use/subscribe to Ride with GPS to get turn by turn nav on the bolt?
Hello the screen on the 530 seems really dark (while following a course) compared to the 520. What do you recommend in settings? Also the virtual partner takes up the entire bottom of screen when following a map.. any way to loose the large green VP field at the bottom? Great review and thank you for your time
the thing i like about the garmin is the connect app which allows you to get voice directions and also avg speed and HR read out, which is great when you have headphones in, saves you always looking at the unit. the other thing i like is your activities are uploaded and stores on Garmin servers a bit like strava, where with wahoo it does not, so if you have to uninstall your wahoo app, you lose your history and rides
Now that's is what I wanted to know more. Thank you. I use my mifit to give me reading through the earphones, like hr, kms and avg time per km. while running music player and bike computer app.
That's actually a very important aspect for me. I didn't even know that before I ordered it. I do have that audio feedback with my Forerunner, but since it's "only" the 745 it only gives me interval alerts. It doesn't have proper navigation features, only a breadcrumb path. Good enough for running, but yeah, no audio cues for your route.
Edge 530. It’s more powerful and therefore quicker to generate a route. Rider 750 has the advantage of touchscreen which may make moving around the map more intuitive. Because it’s a bit slow, this benefit is slightly negated. Edge 530 obviously more expensive though.
I am user of 410 Rider (no map, but with gps), Bryton has very poor quality of android app and software overall, something is very complicated to sync computer and phone.
Thanks for the review, Monty! Tell me, is it possible to monitor the air temperature in Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT v1 on the display? When I see a track in Strava, I detect the temperature in it, but I can't find an option in the settings to display it on the screen.
Yes. You need to go into the ELEMNT app and edit the Workout page. Pick one of the data fields in the list to edit. Then from the list of available data fields to change it to, pick ‘Weather’ then ‘Temperature’.
I can’t see the comment where you were having issues but you inspired to produce a new format of TH-cam short called ‘Bike tech support’: How to change a data field on a Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT V1 th-cam.com/users/shorts9WEReOqop3U?feature=share
That was helpful. I have an Elemnt Bolt I've used for the last three summers, but am thinking of switching to a Garmin because it's less tied to a smartphone app. Your video was informative, but there is one other point I'd like to be sure about. My Wahoo Bolt can still use routes that are created in RideWithGPS and copied directly (vis USB cable) to the Routes file on the Bolt. But my Bolt is (intentionally) not up-to-date and I understand that capability has been taken away in recent updates. That is important when I'm in a hotel room where the WiFi requires interaction with a login page. I can't go forever without updating my Wahoo Bolt, and when I do, it seems my Bolt will become worthless in those situations. (It's also a nuisance not being able to change the timezone without using the app. I am hoping a Garmin can handle that without the app.)
Coming from using a Edge 810 which came off my bike the other week and broke the screen (though it still works ok) so thinking about maybe upgrading rather than repairing. Having used Garmin for donkeys years I’m not really interested in swapping to Wahoo, would you say the 530 would be a suitable replacement for my touch screen 810 or would I be better spending more and going for the 830 instead. I understand the 830 is basically the same as 530 with a touch screen.
Hi Dewi. The Edge 530 is definitely a very good bike computer. I've used it a lot and really like it. I am afraid I can't comment yet on the 830 as I haven't used one. I just bought one, along with the ELEMNT ROAM, for testing/videos but it'll be a while before I can post those videos. As you say, comes down to whether you need the touchscreen...
Definitely persevere with the Edge 530. It’s a great unit. Bit of a learning curve but once there I really like it. Review on the way where I essentially say this.
Thanks for the review. Been pretty happy with my Bolt and routing has been fine with Komoot routes (albeit a bit chatty) or the odd reroute with the app. It would be better if the map screen could pop up/away when turns are approaching though as I find myself spending most/all of my time on the map screen (except when climbing) and not on other screens with potentially useful data. I don't think that would be any better on the 530 though ? I'm going to be picking up a 530 though for the ClimbPro feature as I did some climbing this past week-end and it would have helped to know what was left in detail. The profile screen of the Bolt is only marginally helpful in that respect. With lots of long climbs lined up this summer in the Alps it looks like a must...or at least that's my story ;-) Having color warnings for the Varia 315 (currently at 90£ on ChainReaction) will help too.
For the directions things, I think the Edge 530 *will* be better for the use case you're describing. I'm sure a brief map screen pops up ahead of every turn, no matter which screen you're on. Sounds like you're pretty set on getting one, so you can report back! Deffo on the ClimbPro front. A must for Alpine climbs! (I'm sure you want me to endorse your purchasing decision...)
I was Edge 500 user forever, then switched to the Bolt in 2017 (I've had 2 units). I loved the Bolt, but wanted a bigger screen and color. Recently I bought an Edge 1030+ and I must say I was very disappointed. I do not like the touch screen, the font size does not fill the fields well, Its way to big when mounted out front, I find the navigation overly sensitive (street vs parallel bike paths). The only positives are battery life and .... well that's about it. I just got the Bolt 2 and its very good. Color maps are good and detail has been increased when zooming out to the 1, 2, and 5 mile scales compared to the original. Varia radar integrates better than on the edge - with the green border always on (not overlaid and blocking the screen as with the Edge unit), plus the top LED's light up with the Varia. The Bolts' size is perfect for optimizing size/performance. And it charges quicker now. Plus, I find the phone app much easier to use. Perhaps I would have been happier with a smaller edge 530 unit with non-touch screen...live and learn. I guess I will save the Edge 1030 for those extremely long multiday rides and indoor rides with the pedal dynamics.
Thanks for the detailed comment. I'll use it as the basis for my future review of the Bolt v2 and comparison videos! I just got the v2 BOLT this week and used it once. It was playing up with my Varia - it kept flashing up a radar disconnected alert every 30 secs. This was a Bolt v2 issue as the Varia was working fine with the Edge 830 and ROAM on the same ride. I think the software is perhaps a bit buggy right now (see DC Rainmaker review) so will wait before making my videos (ha! as if that's the reason why I will be slow to publish the videos....). That all said, I'm pretty excited about it. (Hopefully, eventually) the same great Wahoo user experience with a colour screen in a small form factor. BTW, the thing about the Varia integration with the Edge - I think I made the same point as you in this video about it overlaying on the Edge 530 (in this case) screen - I've since found the option to switch it to other formats - I think one of those is a solid bar that doesn't block the screen (a while since I looked at it). I've not quite made the 'investment' in the Edge 1030+... one day perhaps.
@@Sportivecyclist My varia never dropped with the Wahoo units, but did so with the 1030 (momentarily only). But connecting any of these gadgets to multiple head units simultaneously may be a source of signal loss to any single unit. 👍👍
Thanks mu mu. I saw your comment on the other vid and wondered whether it was for this one. At the same price I think I’d go for the Edge 530. Whilst I’m not a big user of navigation features beyond what the BOLT has, there is a definite advantage to the rerouting and the larger, more detailed colour maps. Remember there are buying links (affiliate links) for both in the description or in the long blog post I wrote comparing the two - on my website.
Thank you for a nice review, very useful. Unrelated question: what sunglasses are you wearing in this video? I've been trying to find a nice solution to combine my normal glasses with smth to protect my eyes from the sun while cycling... Thanks!

Be mindful...the BOLT sometimes has an issue where it will stop charging when off and plugged in. Having to return mine to the manufacturer to get a replacement. Probably buying the Garmin regardless of the replacement ELEMNT
Thanks Tom. I have the answer for you in this video: th-cam.com/video/2RatQ0A8hBA/w-d-xo.html (It's the Orkaan water resistant jersey. SG sent me it, plus the Climb & Conquer winter jacket, to try out. I know I got them for free but I literally wear that Orkaan all the time now... The C&C is great too - gets a lorra love on my Strava timeline).
i have the roam and the 530, i had the bolt but it broke, it was still under warranty, i ask Wahoo how much extra would it be to upgrade the bolt to the roam, wahoo said that i can have the Roam as a replacement free of charge. that's good customer service. there is some things i like the the 530 and some the Roam, if i have to choose to buy again i think i would go with the 530, as i like that if you wear head phones that you can get voice prompts for the navigation and also for you avr speed and your heart rate. also all your rides are uploaded to garmin connect, where as wahoo does not have that feature,
Hi LeJuan - mine does that for what feels like a long time, but eventually will recalculate to a later point on the route. It certainly isn't dynamic. I don't know if you can change a setting to make it more sensitive to re-routing. Will investigate...
This is my opinion lol I initially was aiming for Garmin but then found out about Wahoo. I ended up getting the bolt because of its smartphone integration. It looks like setting up a Garmin to your liking and installing stuff looks like it lags and takes time. But that’s my point of view I love my bolt Was looking at Garmin 130,130+ 520 and 530 before getting the bolt
I’ve been mulling over the original question. For me I think the 530 is worth the extra money. The colour screen and better onboard navigation are worth having. It took me a while to get into the 530 (so many menus ...) but now I’m getting the hang of it I really like it. Back on the fence though, I don’t think anyone would be disappointed if they accidentally bought the BOLT instead.
@@brandonbernard6751 I set my 530 [all 3 profiles mtb, road and indoor] in 30min. And im new garmin user(had bryton before). Everything is intuitive and the menu is not complicated at all.
Thanks for clarifying the turn by turn navigation, I was wondering why it wasn’t working on my Bolt. I will try configuring my route with Ride with gps as opposed to those created in Strava.
@@sethleibowitz2906 you can plan your route with Strava amongst others. The ride with GPS option is for using the turn by turn navigation and the Led direction guidance.

Thank you for a nice review, very useful. Unrelated question: what sunglasses are you wearing in this video? I've been trying to find a nice solution to combine my normal glasses with smth to protect my eyes from the sun while cycling... Thanks!
Hi Oleg -thanks for the comment. Here is an older (and therefore a bit rubbishy) video about the glasses (unboxing; trying them out): th-cam.com/video/MZypvLtN6Dw/w-d-xo.html&lc=UgwaFDy36bG3fNpOXc14AaABAg
I'll probably do another longer term review of them at some point as I get a lot of questions!
Be mindful...the BOLT sometimes has an issue where it will stop charging when off and plugged in. Having to return mine to the manufacturer to get a replacement. Probably buying the Garmin regardless of the replacement ELEMNT
Great vid - which Stolen Goat jersey is that?!
@@Sportivecyclist Awesome thanks bud
How does the Elemnt Roam compare?
Now there's the question.... And one I will soon answer as the ROAM I just ordered should arrive tomorrow 👍🏻
@@Sportivecyclist tell me please what do you think after 1 week of usage)
i have the roam and the 530, i had the bolt but it broke, it was still under warranty, i ask Wahoo how much extra would it be to upgrade the bolt to the roam, wahoo said that i can have the Roam as a replacement free of charge. that's good customer service. there is some things i like the the 530 and some the Roam, if i have to choose to buy again i think i would go with the 530, as i like that if you wear head phones that you can get voice prompts for the navigation and also for you avr speed and your heart rate. also all your rides are uploaded to garmin connect, where as wahoo does not have that feature,
Hi, If I am in a group of bikers who have garmin headsets and I have the bolt, can I track their location
Nope, unless they share their Livetrack with you and you check it out on your smartphone.
How do I get my Garmin to "re route" me? All mine does is say "make a U-turn" no matter what I do. It's do dumb.
Hi LeJuan - mine does that for what feels like a long time, but eventually will recalculate to a later point on the route. It certainly isn't dynamic. I don't know if you can change a setting to make it more sensitive to re-routing. Will investigate...
In your opinion, do you think the Garmin is worth the extra cost?
This is my opinion lol
I initially was aiming for Garmin but then found out about Wahoo. I ended up getting the bolt because of its smartphone integration. It looks like setting up a Garmin to your liking and installing stuff looks like it lags and takes time. But that’s my point of view I love my bolt
Was looking at Garmin 130,130+ 520 and 530 before getting the bolt
I’ve been mulling over the original question. For me I think the 530 is worth the extra money. The colour screen and better onboard navigation are worth having. It took me a while to get into the 530 (so many menus ...) but now I’m getting the hang of it I really like it. Back on the fence though, I don’t think anyone would be disappointed if they accidentally bought the BOLT instead.
@@Sportivecyclist If your going to pay £260 for the Garmin Edge 530 then you might as well just pay £299 and get the Wahoo Elemnt Roam?
Ah but when does it stop...? I think I’ll buy a Roam and an Edge 830 next to compare those two.
I will try configuring my route with Ride with gps as opposed to those created in Strava.
which app would you need to plan your route with the element bolot
@@sethleibowitz2906 you can plan your route with Strava amongst others. The ride with GPS option is for using the turn by turn navigation and the Led direction guidance.
Nice video! tell me about your cycling glasses. What's the model?
Thanks Dmitry. They are called the Eyepod Hawks. I got them from this UK company - my sense is that this is a licensed design (I don't know), so perhaps there is a local supplier in your country: sportsglasses.online/product/hawk/
@@Sportivecyclist Thank you a lot!
Has he considered taking a tranquilizer before filming.
Dunno. Has he?
Time for a new video with the new Bolt unit 😉
Yes! harrumph! I’ve just ordered a v2!! (I also renamed this video with a v1 to try to make it clear).
After your review I do not understand who will buy Wahoo, just piece of something brown, map looks like on my Fenix 3. Will be choosing between 530, 830 or 1030.
Just interested, Wahoo ELEMNT Roam is the same awful map as Bolt has?
Full mapping on the Roam so I believe
transmogrified!!!

Get a tripod or set the camera down.
Do you live on a farm Monty?
Sort of. We have a yard with some old knackered farm buildings. In the alternative reality where I become a TH-cam millionaire, this yard is the site for a large bike workshop, cafe, (micro-brewery) and all purpose bike space....
