Great review. This was all I needed to choose between the two. I can endure a bit of tricky setup as long as it performs once I use it, and I have always been a bit skeptical to touch screen on a device I will use on my mountain bike, both summer and winter. So, 530 - here we go!
I recently bought an 830 to replace my old Edge 1000. I wasn’t sure if it was worth changing but boy am I glad I did. The difference is like night and day, it’s so much faster. The other big plus is the battery life. I no longer have think about carrying a backup power source if I’m out for more than a few hours. The 830 battery life is fantastic. My only issue has been occasional freezing when I go to power off and the circle remains on the screen. It’s happened maybe 3 or 4 times since I got it (at start of the year). Not a huge problem though: just hold all the buttons for 20 seconds or so, then it reboots and is fine again.
Thanks for the review. I'm so glad you addressed the issue I was concerned about...operating the touch screen verses the button driven device while riding. I always ride in gloves, so it looks like the 530 for me.
A tip so it doesn't freak out so much when re-routing: Eliminate as many little dots/waypoints/etc from the route as possible. If it's a section with no route marking dot, it doesn't freak out usually, but if you want to skip over or around a route marking dot it will lose it's shit and insist you go back to that dot.
Just been checking online reviews to help me choose the right device for me and yours was one of the better reviews. Thanks for that, I now know it is the 530 I need in my life.
Great review, I hadn't considered a few points you raised so this was helpful. The ending was a bit ominous, you were about a month into lockdowns in April 2020, looking forward to "riding with all our friends again" now here we are September 2021 and things in Australia in particular couldn't realistically be worse, lockdown-wise. Stay safe!
Just the review I needed. I was hesitating between the 2 units, and the insights you provided sealed the deal for me. 530 it is. Thanks for the effort you put in. Great work.
Currently deciding between the 530 and 830 and this review really helped, thanks. I agree on your conclusion that the 530 is the better option. I dont want to deal with a touch screen while on my bike, nor want a dirty screen. The struggle to setup the 530 is the compromise, but worth it.' Judging by how fast touchscreen is implemented, I would not be surprised if the future 540 will have touchscreen as well, unless they keep that on 840/1040 only. Makes the decision to go for the 530 even easier :)
This video makes me think having an 830 or 1030 is more of a status symbol than anything. 530 it is! Thank you so much for the in-depth and (most importantly) honest review--especially of its downfalls.
I'm surprised the computers we carry on us every day (Phones) can't just replace these Garmin Head units.. Why can't I install an App on my phone and have my phone do and show me EVERYTHING this unit can, but maybe even better?
I bought an 530 after problems with the batterylife of my 820. After 4 hours with navigation (and in colder temperatures) my 820 would be dead, with my 530 after 4hours with navigation I still have about 60% left, I also bought the extra battery that u can attach so I could probably do 20hours with navigation! Also the buttons are so much easier with gloves, with the 820 I always needed to take my gloves of!
I found the screen dark and hard to see. Mind me asking what is your brightness set up? I'm so used to the 520 at 0%... I never had an issue. The 530 is different and much darker. Also have you figured out how to loose the virtual partner and the large green field? Thank you for your help
Great review which made me go for the 530 because I also dislike touch screen on a bike. But what I don"t understand is that you like the Garmin connect app. It's not that good. With 2 devices connected you have 2 different training statuses. My Forerunner telling me that I'm productive and my edge 530 is telling me that I'm on recovery. Not very usefull in my opinion.
Hoping you might be able to help me here! I just purchased the 830 Edge and I am unable to find the Ride with GPS or Strava Routes applications within the screen you're seeing on the right at 2:50. Is there some place in the Garmin Express app on my computer that I should be looking for these applications to add to my Edge? I'm stuck here
I had the 530 (lost it and got it back) and bought a 830. I liked the physical buttons on the 530 but doing anything other than shuffling through data screens was really annoying, especially using the navigations/map feature was a nightmare. So now I'm really happy with the 830, which can compute routes on the fly, although the touch screen can be a bit annoying with gloves. The downside of touch screen in winter far outweighs the added functionality of the 830 vs. 530. Just my thoughts.
Great review and I think you got me sold on the 530. I know this video is 2 years old, but my 520 needs a replacement. The rubber/silicon of the nav buttons has finally deteriorated to the point they are unusable during a ride and only work when I am able to stick something like a hex wrench or the tips of my sunglasseses’ arms in the space.
You would think after all these reviews they would have taken heed to changing/ updating the device to be more user friendly for simple set up for the basic rider, especially. I just purchased the 530 yesterday and I’m ready to return it, not even taken it out of the box yet, just watching reviews. I’m feeling quite overwhelmed with everyone saying not user friendly hard to set up, like in these modern times why? That would be a top feature for any device. I have 90 days to try it out to get a full refund, so I’m going to mount it and play with it and see what I think. Thanks for this review
I’m in the market for a new unit. Coming from an Edge 520 I can’t decide which way to go. I like the idea of a touchscreen and the 830 is appealing. The price of the 1030 is too high. Or just go to Wahoo and get no touchscreen. Can’t decide.
Hideaki Sakakibara I like the 520, it’s just older now. I’d like to have a touchscreen and the new features that are out there. Also it doesn’t support cycling dynamics. I like to nerd out over the numbers.
Thanks for the review. It's very helpful. Just wondering about the battery life. Three years past how did the battery perform? still good? I have a foreunner 245, the battery can hardly hold for one day if I have a two hours ride.
Hello great review and thank you. I have two questions.. How do I loose the large green virtual partner field on the bottom of map screen. It's terrible. Compared to the 520, the screen is so dark and hard to follow when in map navigation. What do you recommend? The 520 was zero brightness. The 530 everything has to be 100% 🤨
Don't need anything more than what my old 500 provided. Unfortunately I'm starting to have battery charge issues...100% at the beginning of the ride only to have it die less than 3 hours later. Didn't think I'd be looking at spending potentially $300 for a new one either but...I have had and used that 500 for 10 years or so and I can't complain about that.
i bought my husband a edge 530 for his birthday.. he has had 3 tries at setting up but on all occurrences he has failed, bluetooth does not connect, heart rate belt does not connect(but does watch to phone), tried to delete a test ride could not work out how to actually delete, tried to change some of the fields but could not work it out change them, simply put very very disappointed... is the 830 any easy to setup?
Sigh I'm still in between these two. I can get a Garmin Edge 530 SENSOR BUNDLE for around AUD 590 and Garmin Edge 830 DEVICE ONLY for AUD 610. I don't know if I'm gonna miss the touchscreen or not :(
Agree with you there Mario. Both the 530 and 830 have screens that are both dull, and highly reflective. It's lucky they've improved battery life because the backlight is crucial for readability. On the other end, the Wahoo ELEMNT Roam had a fantastic screen.
Quick tip, I changed my screen to dark background and it improve greatly the readability and also saves battery as crazy. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed
I once put my 830 into my back pocket during a ride of the NC500 (cafe stop). Lost half of the Day 1 ride including Bealach na Ba climb because the heat from my back was touching the screen. 😫 That said, has been awesome since I learned this lesson, until my dog chewed it up this weekend.
I'm rather interested in this unit. But I want to know what watches can be used as hear rate sensors for these head units. I'm not really a fan of the chest strap set up. I hope someone can help me. Thank you.
@@JustRideAdelaide, one more question for you... I have an original 500 Edge. I am totally happy with it, don't need mapping right now. But, the screen lighting sucks, like Casio watch. Would the 530 in your opinion be the next step up without mapping? TY.
You said it takes a long time to set up the 530 because of the the no touchscreen and so many menus. Is that only during the initial main setup? Once you’ve adjusted your setting to the main screen you should be able to turn it on and go from that day in with your settings on the screen that you want to see right?
That's correct, it functions quickly once set up. But every time you need to use the menu and change something it's slower because of the button interface. I still think it's worth it though, especially if you're changing things while riding.
Great review. Been debating whether I need a Garmin (or similar) for years. LOL. Still prefer having my smartphone rocking RWGPS. Nothing can beat the use and the speed a smartphone has. All these dedicated cycling units have a very meh interface and are way behind even the cheapest smartphone. If I need more juice, I just strap a cheap small 5k ma powerbank to my handlebars which will keep me going for another 3 hours. Will keep thinking for now I guess. May be Garming 840 or Karoo 3 or smth else will finally make me try it.
so i can ride out with the garmin 530 and leave my phone at home, and when i get back, i can connect all the ride data from the garmin on my strava account (segments, times for medals etc?) or did i missunderstood that? :3
Thanks man, you've sold me Edge 530! However, I have a question. Can you display a map with navigation along with some other data screens such as speed and cadence? At the moment I'm using my Garmin watches and I'm struggling with the screen size and the number of data fields that they can clearly display. I always have maps on and I would like to see something more than that.
Hey mate, they certainly can show data below maps. I just got back from a ride where I had the map on almost the whole time following a route, and had 2 data fields showing at the bottom. 2 is all you get though.
I have the 530 and it has been working well with everything except Strava segments. I have the segments starred, Strava and Garmin Connect are synced for courses and activities, the segments show up as enabled under live segments on my 530, but I do not get the live segment screen to pop up when I am riding and approach the segment... PLEASE can you help explain how to get it to work
follow up - does the segment screen not pop up if you are actively navigating a course? I have only tried to hit segments while navigating a course, I havent tried any while just "free riding"
Very good review, Thank you!. I was hoping if you could please advise me on this.Right now, I am getting an offer for 1030 going for the same price as the 830. Now should I go for the 830 considering its newer hw and 1030 is due an upgrade in the next 12 months? What would be your view? Apologies but still learning about cycling computers. Thank you!
Glad you liked it! There's a couple of things to consider here. The 1030 screen is fantastic but the internals are quite old now so it feels a little bit slow when you're using it. The 830 is smaller but it's fast internals make it much better to use. I do think a 1030 update must be close but who knows how soon that'll come out. Personally I'd still likely choose the 1030 but I'd want it to be cheaper than the 830!
@@JustRideAdelaide Thanks for responding so promptly. You are right as in no matter how much of firmware updates, you can never upgrade the HW so we can only expect slowness to increase over time. As for the price, the offer i am getting is the same price. As such, I will go with 830 for (i) product longevity/support and (ii) learn the Garmin ecosystem better i.e as you've said - 830 is better to use and i am a newbie. I can always look at the flagship product at a later date (hopefully in a few years) and when i do, i should be able to get a better re-sale value of an 830 then a 1030 . Thanks again for you advise! TBH, this review swayed me bigtime. :)
Hi all, just a quick question..all these Garmin gps computer calculate the speed without any additional sensor or I need to buy an additional sensor just to track the speed?
Hey Nicola, every Garmin will track speed based on GPS and doesn't need an external sensor. Garmin does make a speed sensor but the unit itself will track speed just fine.
@2:33 "after approximately 3 hours of setting it up"??? What???..3hours??? I might have to lean towards the WAHOO ELEMENT ROAM..im looking for simplicity..
@@JustRideAdelaide just like my kind ask for a software update for usable battery life 😂 after 6-7h it’s dead even on lowest screen brightness. A shame cause it’s a great GPS but useless for long rides...and took 6months after my pre order to arrive.
Hi there, if I was to purchase new a Garmin 530 or 830 from the UK would it be programmed differently than one purchased in New Zealand or Australia ie maps etc? Also I would be interested buying as a Bundle, heart rate and cadence, can you comment on that please. Thanks for the review, sorry about such awkward questions. Cheers
No worries John, happy to help! My understanding is the unit would have UK/Europe maps installed because that was the region it was purchased in. I think you can buy other regions but I've never had to do it so I'm not sure. There's also ways to import Open Street Maps onto the unit, and DC Rainmaker did a video showing how. The bundles are a good option because Garmin tends to make quality sensors so no worries there. You just gotta open your wallet a fair bit! Hope that helps
The answer is no. Especially if you've never had a bike GPS. Both will overwhelm you with features. The 530 is definitely superior though but probably overkill for your first GPS
Great comparison! I chose the 530 for the same reasons that you mentioned! I do hope that their navigational features on the connect will improve in the future though! I am currently always planning my routes via komoot! How do you do that?
@@Swoonorama Haha, ok got it. I use Ride With GPS personally. I find it's the best way to make complex routes. Strava can freak out sometimes with the routes I make. Then I directly access from the Garmin and go adventuring!
@@JustRideAdelaide I use Garmin route maker which works fantastic and also I use mapmyride or Runkeeper route maker which is great too. Strava route maker really sucks like all Strava itself. I just have Strava because it's a Facebook for showing and seeing mine and my pals activities. Perhaps the segments to push myself harder but that is all I care about Strava. As you said, Garmin Connect activity analysis is fantastic and you really see is made for that. Also all the Garmin Ecosystem is unbeatable
Do you have any experience using these with a smart-trainer by now? Such as the suito from elite? I currently "just" have the watch and it doesn't really work well together (watch tells me I go 500 kilometres an hour no matter what wheel diameter I dial in - I don't think I'm this fast XD) is it better with the edge? Can I effectively control a smart trainer with it as well?
@@MVVM unfortunately not, Elite says they are currently having problems with their application, but that shouldn't cause the problem I think. Tried customer service, they haven't responded yet

@@mikicastan I don't know exactly what the differences are off the top of my head, but there's quite a bit more going on in the Roam. It's also quite a lot bigger.

Maybe they should make a devise that you can swap from touch screen when off the bike. Then switch to buttons when riding. Can't be to difficult to do. Anyway I am a fan of buttons myself. Touch screen is hassle when riding.
Thank you for this vid! I've just ordered the 530 as I wanted to get away from using Samsung Health (it works, but, you know.. lol) and was wondering if I shouldn't have gone with the 830 instead. Thanks to you I think I made the right decision after all =)

Nice review! Although we can't type an address, can we pinpoint the spot we like to go on 530?
Great review. Been debating whether I need a Garmin (or similar) for years. LOL. Still prefer having my smartphone rocking RWGPS. Nothing can beat the use and the speed a smartphone has. All these dedicated cycling units have a very meh interface and are way behind even the cheapest smartphone. If I need more juice, I just strap a cheap small 5k ma powerbank to my handlebars which will keep me going for another 3 hours. Will keep thinking for now I guess. May be Garming 840 or Karoo 3 or smth else will finally make me try it.
so i can ride out with the garmin 530 and leave my phone at home,
and when i get back,
i can connect all the ride data from the garmin on my strava account (segments, times for medals etc?)
or did i missunderstood that? :3
Yeah dude, the GPS works fully independently of a phone connection
@@JustRideAdelaide thank you so very much for your reply.
i just placed my order on a 530 :3
Thanks man, you've sold me Edge 530!
Ride Adelaide sounds great, thank you.
Great review! Thanks!
I miss group rides. Thanks for the video, the internet 'research' continues.
I miss group rides too !! ☹
Great reviews. Nice job
Hi all, just a quick question..all these Garmin gps computer calculate the speed without any additional sensor or I need to buy an additional sensor just to track the speed?
Hey Nicola, every Garmin will track speed based on GPS and doesn't need an external sensor. Garmin does make a speed sensor but the unit itself will track speed just fine.
very nice feature overview dude
Cheers Felix 😁
Can you tell me what mount that is? You show it pretty well at about 1:30 in...
That's the bog-standard Garmin mount that comes with the 530 and 830 nowadays. It's nice and long, plus comes with the Varia interface underneath.
@@JustRideAdelaide Thank you! Picking up my 530 tomorrow.
Very helpful, thank you for this review
@2:33 "after approximately 3 hours of setting it up"??? What???..3hours??? I might have to lean towards the WAHOO ELEMENT ROAM..im looking for simplicity..
The interface isnt that bad is it. Takes me around 30 seconds to change a data field
The 830/1030 will do that in about 5 seconds 🤷♀️
@@JustRideAdelaide i can wait the extra 25 seconds....
Hammerhead should send you one of their Karoo2 - would be a great one to compare to the 530/830
I asked, but my email to Hammerhead seems to have been ignored 😅
@@JustRideAdelaide just like my kind ask for a software update for usable battery life 😂 after 6-7h it’s dead even on lowest screen brightness. A shame cause it’s a great GPS but useless for long rides...and took 6months after my pre order to arrive.
Oh dear! Maybe I should buy one 🤔
Cant the 530 be used on different bikes? I want to make sure I buy something that I can swap between my MTB and gravel bike.
Yep, you can set up several profiles for different bikes with different sensors.
Cool, thanks mate! ill go with the 530.
Do you have winter in Australia? 🤔That you need gloves? 😇
It gets fairly cold here, down to about zero degrees Celsius in mid winter on the chilliest few days. But mostly I'm soft and I like to be warm!
is it possible to save rides with the 530 on a smartphone or the garmin app? im new to tracking computers so just wondering
The Edge syncs your ride with the Garmin phone app but the ride itself isn't stored on the phone or recorded on the phone.
i heard that the first 530's units had an inssue with the buttons, have they fixed it?
I haven't had any issues. Can't comment on any other units 🤷♀️
@@JustRideAdelaide in 3 yrs, the rubber buttons will crack
Brilliant abd exhaustive comparative analysis, thanks for sharing!
Really helpful video - Thanks!
@@JustRideAdelaide Many thanks for your response John
Did you even mention the mtb trail features?! 😅
It sure has those features! I didn't mention them because... I don't use them...
I'm about to get the 520 as my first gps bike. The difference between the 530 to 520 is that big? 520 plus goes for 199 now
The answer is no.
Thanks Shibui! When you say "how do you do that" are you asking how I plan my routes?
@@JustRideAdelaide sorry, yes that is what I meant!
Same question.Did u find any answer somewhere?Thx
@@MVVM unfortunately not, Elite says they are currently having problems with their application, but that shouldn't cause the problem I think. Tried customer service, they haven't responded yet
@@thomasploner9424 I had a few days with a Tacx Neo 2 and everything seemed to be fine, but that was a few months ago. Unfortunately I can't really give any help with compatibility to other brands!
I'm waiting for my new garmin device (Edge 530) and already have the Suito so i will try it and will see.
@@MVVM please let me know! I'm eager to find a solution
This was helpful-thanks!
Literally just bought the 530 yesterday to use mainly for the navigation but now I’m wondering if I should have gone with the roam 😭
Don't worry mate the 530 is still a great unit. You'll get used to it's... uhhhhh... vigorous approach to navigation.
Ride Adelaide I hope so! Keep up the good work
kiki the Roam is amazing. Way more intuitive than Garmin. Trailforks baked into the 530 is the only advantage I see.
Saf Jr I regret my purchase more and more everyday. Constant problems 😂
@@kiki-ig8fq what are the problems?
The touch screen of the 800 was ok, but with theadded features of the 830, it became horror.
If you want to zoom, you get the screen to go to the home page, horrible.
Greet video, well done.
After watching your movie, I decided it. Thank you very much!
Glad I could help!
Are you happy with your choice?
Great review buddy!
Good video! Like your style.
Garmin 830 with Garmin edge remote control on my gravel - touch screen and buttons
So, that is what the remote controller is for?
@@SidiNic It's nice to have buttons option to press with your thumbs, without taking your hands of the hoods, just attaching the remote on the inside of the handlebar, where the lever meets the bar, doing tirangle attachment point with the rubbers
Accurate. Easy install.
Do you need the sensors to see you're speed? Or is gps enough?
GPS is plenty. They've gotten really accurate now so I've stopped using speed sensor completely.
What demons are this thing on your horns ?
Thanks great info
So,wahoo or this?
I'd take the Edge 530 over the ELEMNT Bolt because that''s a few years old now, but I did review an ELEMNT Roam a couple of months ago but didn't make a video. I'd probably take the Roam over the 830.
Ride Adelaide
Diferent betwen element bolt and roam are not that big at all,i’m i right?
@@mikicastan I don't know exactly what the differences are off the top of my head, but there's quite a bit more going on in the Roam. It's also quite a lot bigger.
Ride Adelaide
Regards maping,color screen,battery is better
But regards overall use and training metrics they look very similiar
@@JustRideAdelaide do you have a written review of the wahoo? No worries if not but thought I'd ask. Thanks for this review too super insightful, the 530 looks really good
ill stick to my 510 unit
Maybe they should make a devise that you can swap from touch screen when off the bike. Then switch to buttons when riding. Can't be to difficult to do. Anyway I am a fan of buttons myself. Touch screen is hassle when riding.
Thank you for this vid! I've just ordered the 530 as I wanted to get away from using Samsung Health (it works, but, you know.. lol) and was wondering if I shouldn't have gone with the 830 instead. Thanks to you I think I made the right decision after all =)
Glad to help 😁
my biggest gripe with samsung health was the touch screen and the complete uselessness when it rains, which is a lot here in the Netherlands
Cool cycling room
Thanks Paul! It looks nice from this one angle. Every other direction is messy as hell 😂
Nice review. Help me to make my choice.
530 it is for me
