Imagine you're a 12-year-old kid in 1967 and you love this song when you hear it on Top 40 radio, and buy the 45 rpm single. Then a while later you graduate to FM radio and hear the album version for the first time. The single had the ENTIRE instrumental portion cut out of the middle. Hearing the full version was life changing.
Not to mention our parents reactions!!ðĪĢðĪĢðĪĢ I was 15 when this was released!!! Great times!!ðĪðĪðĪðķðžðĩ

I remember this around my 4 th birthday and even liked it then!
Had to fit that 2:55 limit for radio.
The Doors were booked on The Ed Sullivan Show to sing this song. Ed had asked Jim not to sing the word higher because of the drug implications involved. He wanted him to rephrase it or substitute another word. Jim assured Ed he would do as he asked and then sang the original version live on the show. Ed was furious and yelled at him afterwards that he would never perform on The Ed Sullivan Show again. Jim looked at him cooly and said "I just did." ðĪĢðĪĢðĪĢ Legend!

It's hard for me to imagine an adult hearing this for only the first time; this song was SO influential, pervasive, and central to the late 1960s that it is a defining touchstone. Hearing this, all the smells and flavors come rushing back. The band Love was the Doors' best frenemies; try their "Alone Again Or" for more psychedelic 1967.
Absolutely sterling suggestion. Love were the Doors' heroes before Jim and Co. surpassed them on their own label (ouch!). Still, Love's Forever Changes is one of the most influential albums of the rock era, along with everything the Doors ever recorded. Lots of great listening ahead for you, Salvo. Enjoy!

Highly recommend When The Musicâs Over, from Absolutely Live! Jim was an absolute amazing live performer. He must be captured in his element, you wonât regret it.

I love the doors and theyâre one of the better bands that hold up from the 60âs. A few suggestions would be Break on Through, Soul Kitchen, Back Door Man, Five to One, Roadhouse Blues, Peace Frog, The Wasp and of course everyoneâs favorite The End.
"Not to touch the earth" my fav rarely does anyone react to it on youtube too wild I guess and "The Soft Parade"..

One of the most psychedelic songs from the same year is George Harrisonâs âWithin You Without Youâ from the Beatlesâ Sgt. Pepper album. Incredible song.

The two Doors songs that you have listened to have leaned more towards their jazz influence. They also had a very good blues side. You should try Roadhouse Blues, 5 to 1, or Backdoor Man. Some other amazing songs are L.A. Woman, Peace Frog, and Break on Through. Listen to at least a couple of more Doors songs before you try When the Music's Over or their magnum opus, The End. Both are unique in both their music and lyrics, but they are deep down the rabbit hole.
If you want psychedelia, I would recommend "In a Gadda Da Vita" by Iron Butterfly, but be aware that the full studio version is 17 minutes long...
What else, then? You've already covered "White Rabbit", but Jefferson Airplane did quite a bit more. I definitely can recommend "Triad" (technically a David Crosby song, but the Byrds version didn't get released until later), "Crown of Creation", "Plastic Fantastic Lover", and so much more of their works.
Jimi Hendrix is another must hear when it comes to psychedelic rock, especially "Castles Made of Sand", "Crosstown Traffic", and most of all, "Purple Haze".

I was only 6 years old but remember it ALWAYS being played on the radio and many plays for years.
I was watching a Doors documentary just yesterday and thinking, "I hope Salvo listens to Light My Fire someday." The whole album is fire. In the last video, you were wondering about Jim's personality. He was a pretty intense guy and the album reflects that. Light My Fire came out in 1967, the Vietnam war was raging and it was a turbulent time for a lot of people. His songs reflect that, imo. For a lighter vibe, I'd suggest People Are Strange.

The Doors were one of those bands that are a genre all their own. Along with the Stones, the embodied the darker side of psychedelia and the 60's. They were NOT about peace and love, but about exploring the shadows and finding wisdom in the night. I highly recommend "Not to Touch the Earth", a song I still haven't seen anyone react to, but which encapsulates Morrison's strange, poetic vision of reality. :)

I can't tell you how many times this song was played on the juke box in our local pub.
The next song you need to do by The Doors is "The End". It is a journey and worthwhile but be prepared to be shocked by the song's lyrics and subject matter.
Others to listen to would be "Alabama Song (The Whiskey Bar)" (which was written by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill for one of their musicals, which I think is the only song they did that they did not write), "The Crystal Ship", "Love Street", "L.A. Woman", ""People Are Strange", "When The Music's Over", "Hello, I Love You", "Love Her Madly", and "Touch Me".
Also, when you feel up for it...'The Doors' co-written and directed by Oliver Stone starring Val Kilmer (as Jim Morrison), Kyle McLachlan (as Ray Manzarek), Kevin Dillon (as John Densmore), and Frank Whalley (as Robby Kreiger) is a fun movie. Not completely accurate, and, in some ways, flat-out wrong...Val's performance as Jim is amazing, probably his second greatest performance, right behind Doc Holliday in the western 'Tombstone'. Val also sings most of the songs and sings eerily like Jim did.
Back Door Man was written by Willie Dixon. Crawling King Snake came from the 1920s. They did many covers live.

It was called go to designated persons house, our guy was Turner, we smoked some weed, have a couple drinks, all your friends are there, pick a few albums and put them on the stereo, this was our autoplay...seriously,,, Then turn the tv on and turn it down, don't ask why, we watched but listened to the music. Ok, things are getting slow so we all run out to the car, everyone that we could fit...lol We pass around a couple joints, jump out of the car as fast as we can and slam the doors to preserve the smoke, then a little while later you get a second free high...lol I'm dead serious this was Friday and Saturday nights for us! Go back inside play monopoly, poker, whatever game we picked, these were cards and board games! You get a good game going and you run out of music, so you either put more albums on or turn the radio on, only am back then on transister radio! Now I wrote all this cause if the Doors and a few other bands come on and you've got a nice buzz going, you can sit and listen to it all night and day and stare at the tv and zone out, I call it hippie meditation, but it worked, there were never any fights and we all made our curfew home on time! Except if we went roller skating on 4 wheels on a rackety wood floor or went to the one theatre we had, oh and we had 2 drive in movie theatres but that's a Whole nother story...lol!

I can assure you that if you ask most people of that era to name a Doors song, it will be Light My FireâĶbut, when I think of Phsycadellic Rock, I think of Crimson and Clover by Tommy James and the ShondelsâĶit was in that era, maybe a little later, but not muchâĶAWESOME song!!! Experimental and a certain lane indeed. I don't generally "reach for the Doors" in my musical journeys but they have more than a handful of songs I am glad to have had in my life for decades. The movie was a good watch as well with Val Kilmer.

One of the first songs that gave me an insight into the power of words. I recall a conversation with my dad about the word pyre. We discussed the rhyming with mire but the change in spelling & that some cultures used to burn the bodies of their dead loved ones. It was in that conversation that I examined my own mortality, too. I was around 6 or 7 years old (late 60s).
The Doors are a very good album band. A high quality on their songs. They're not the Beatles, Stones, or Zeppelin, but they had a very distinctive style. Speaking of style, the guitar on this one is a little reminiscent of Santana. Early trance rock.

This song was written by Robby Krieger, (guitarist) trying to write something to compete with Morrison's earth/death/or fire themes. He wrote a few songs, all becoming their biggest hits. He still plays today.

I was a baby when this hit the airwaves in 67. Got into the Doors around 13 so that would have around 1980 been a fan ever since the first time I heard them.
This came out the year I started kindergarten. My favorite group. Listening to them makes my headaches go away.

This takes me back to my first Middle School dance in the seventh grade.
I personally love to drive to that song. It's a great road trip/pass the miles type of vibe to me. There is always the obvious "stoner" vibe about it as well. One thing to keep in mind as well is the fact that this is off of their very first album and "Riders on the Storm" is on their last album, so you can kind of see a growth to the band through the 4 or so years they were together. You just heard it in reverse...lol.
I might humbly suggest "The Soft Parade" or "Not to Touch the Earth" for Doors songs. I would go studio before trying out live Doors. They were good, just really rough through all the live recordings of them I've heard. My 2 cents, anyhow :)

Hey Salvo, I agree Riders and LMF do not leave a clear sense of the band's true aura; how does their sound fit in popular music? I thought about it and would suggest their power ballad, "Touch Me", off their Soft Parade album. It has their trademark driving beat, Ray Manzarek's bouncy organ and Jim's throaty vocals, but it also has a sexy, catchy melody, a soaring chorus and a nice infusion of horns; and the last few words that end the outro will blow your psychedelic mind! Pop on acid, with a twist of Big Band.
