      I would rule out use of an electric guitar in the shower. Even though you will get shocking results.

    I sing to put singing into my songs. Someone has to do it and I'm the only one available. I would definately like to improve. This looks like a great way to start. I hope these first steps are followed up by more! Thanks Justin.

    justin, i've followed you for about 10 years now and it's great that you hit all the things i've struggled with as a student of guitar. Even ten years later you are still hitting some of the topics that I really struggled with. Thanks for all you do!

    More! More! More!
    Perfect timing - I've just started to learn how to sing and can't wait for these vids. I've already found singing (two weeks) improves my guitar playing (8 months) and vice-verser.
    Release them all in one go so I can binge-watch please :-)

  • @snorben

    Thanks Justin- this was spot on for helping me as a beginner. I felt that my confidence in singing was slightly eroded by my siblings in childhood. Having started to learn the guitar at age 53 having started to learn a few months ago, I'm currently trying to sing songs with the 3 chords , I have mustered- A, D and E so I hope to inflict my singing on my guitar tutor, some easy Beatles, Buddy Holly and What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor?

    • @irenahalder
      @irenahalder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      snorben wow great progress in a short time! I began guitar learning at 58, now I'm 62 so have almost 4 years under my belt. Be persistent and play daily are the most important things. And don't expect rapid progress - it's a ten year project and there's no finishing line, that's realistic I think. Sorry, you didn't ask my opinion .......

      Mohsin Kazi It’s great, when you’re older, to finally have the time to study and learn. Like myself, many women give their ‘best’ decades to family matters, but later in life is a great time to do new things, as I have discovered.

      Too late?? Anyone can learn to be at master at anything, and at any age! You need to be dedicated, be prepared for years of hard graft, and never become complacent with the level you have reached. There's no such thing as natural talent - it's all about hard work and commitment.

    • @richardadams3860
      @richardadams3860 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I learned a few chords when i was 21 but didn't start playing with any seriousness because i felt like it was too late and my friends who played were already really good and i felt stupid to be a beginner. i'm now 47 and started playing again two years ago and am really enjoying it, but jeez..if i'd just started then i'd now have 25 plus years of skills by now. smdh

    You have to start somewhere, don’t you, and this lesson helps you do just that in an encouraging and grounded way. However you sing, it’s really great for the psyche. The feeling of letting those notes ring out from somewhere within is such a satisfying and pleasurable experience.

    First attempt of singing I was contacted by a band of established/experienced musicians who lost their vocalist of several years 8 months prior. After 8 months and around 10 auditions along came me, no prior experience some week guitar skills but no F's given. So auditioned 2 weeks later with the few originals and some covers. Needless to say I was horrible but out of the 8 others astonishingly I was the only one who learned the lyrics and phrasing so I actually got a second audition and end up getting the job. For the moment. Long story short they ended up keeping me around later needing a booking agent and social media person but under the impression if anything happens I would get another chance providing I showed improvement and practiced. FF 1 year opportunity arose never got that chance despite practicing 4 days a week along with lessons and studying so I bailed all together and now am doing good with mi own band, equipment, and studio in the works.

    Another little tip that people having trouble finding the right note is to slide up or down from the note you start with until you land on the right note. Rather than randomly jumping around, just do a vocal slide. It's easy. As Justin says, you'll notice when you land on the same note. It's also good for your voice to sing long slides - do this gently - start as high in your voice without straining and slide down low as you can go without straining. Starting high is the best thing for guys or people who can't bridge their head and chest voices. And there's a guy called Mark Baxter on youtube who has some very easy and well explained vocal warmups and exercises. His videos are nice too. That's for people who want to go just the next step.

    This is great advice. I like to get the song down first on my acoustic, then I look up the lyrics and memorize them. Your singing will improve with conscious effort and singing while playing helps your overall timing and playing with emotion. For instance, I like to play Pink Houses by ole Mellonballs, I can't imagine not singing the lyrics as I play, it would be so dull.

    • @elijahmonn3757
      @elijahmonn3757 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I only do backing vocals. Its easy to pitch against a band mate... i struggle with Lead Vocals though but im trying. Biggest thing i do is revert back to 5th and 7th on choruses (choruses is my job as backing singer).
    This Summer i have gone to a few open mics and annoyed the locals with some bad singing... but i took honest friends who gave feedback!
    Looking forward to the lessons to improve.
    Love your channel.. and your hat is so cool!

    It's important to warm up first. Keep it simple. I like to hum and match the note. Look for TH-cam videos " vocal straw exercise". Extremely simple and easy way to quickly warm up. You can hit higher notes after warming up and it protects your vocal chords.

    I think what really helped me is trying over and over again to sing the same songs alone in my room and recording it then playing it back and hearing where it went wrong, sometimes during playing you don't notice the mistakes (especially when you're just starting it out). Over the course of 6 months or so, I went from being too shy to sing in front of anyone and actually embarrassed to hear my voice on the playback of the recordings, to being....well above tolerable I'd say. I have since started singing during small friend's gatherings and BBQs. It is such a liberating feeling after years of wishing I could do it xD
    It also helps a lot if you have a couple of friends who play the guitar and sing. I noticed at first it was much easier (still is btw) to sing along to someone else's singing and tracking their tone and mimicking it than being the only one singing.
    But the note singing technique is something I've never tried till now! thanks a lot Justin, this could help improve my singing even more :D

    It's amazing how many musicians I know that can't actually sing. I don't know if it's genetic, but some have a natural ability, in others it's totally absent. It's just talking with melody but many people people have great difficulty in achieving this. Can singing be taught to all people?

    To my own surprise I managed to hit the notes you played right away, but I still have an issue where it's incredibly embarrassing to practice with other people around. I don't quite know my vocal range, so often times I just end up sounding like a dying goose, knowing which does wonders for destroying your confidence when there's someone else around.
