      +daipayan sen Many thanks, I been tryin to find out about "guitar training free download" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Peynharlotte Acoustic Smasher - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my neighbour got excellent success with it.

    The first melodie I figured out was "Ode To Joy" by Beethoven
    and just recently "Pretend We're Dead" by L7
    also "He's A Pirate" and the Solo of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" are good songs to start with
    And maybe the first and second solo of "Sweet Child O Mine"

    Question: what if In my musical mind, even the most familiar and simple melodies don’t play accurately? How do I work on that?

  • @JSDJerry
    @JSDJerry 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Kudos Justin. I'm a fan of yours for years. As an aside , I started working on the Barney Kessel "Improv" DVD on youtube. The first lesson is "Play what you hear. " He says the same thing as you. Start with familiar tune or nursery rhyme . The question I had is this. If you are playing a familiar melody or even your own improvised melody to a specific harmony, is the only way to know if your melody fits that harmony is if it sounds right?

      It's great there are so many methods for ear training. Me, I use functional sounds to teach the ear, mind and fingers to play as one. Functional sounds retain the function ( 1 b2 2 b3 etc) of each member of the chromatic scale. They are easily mapped to the fretboard to complete the learning experience.

    I try this all the time and always find stuff by accident. Mostly Xmas tunes for some reason but I have yet to purposely find simple solos of songs I know. I can hear them in my head but my fingers just can't ever seem to find the notes so I get frustrated and quit. I try again once frustration wears off though..lol...Guess it just takes time

  • @keithwellerlounge74
    @keithwellerlounge74 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Justin, I've got a question about this - is it something that you learn automatically from doing the exercise or am I supposed to be thinking about it? You spoke about guessing towards the end of the video, which is at the moment what I'm doing basically. I don't know all the notes on the fretboard yet, should I finish learning those first? Should I be thinking about what specific notes they are in Happy Birthday (for example) or at least what is higher or lower than the last note? Or will I naturally develop my EAR if I fumble around until I get the right notes? I can pretty much hear when I'm doing it correctly but it is just trial and error to get there. Is that ok? Thanks mate.

    What are the things on guitar you should work on frequently. I am a bit lost. There is so much to learn and I don't see much progress in my training.
    So, beside the eartraining. What else should a intermediate guitar player practice regularly?

    Would you do the song We Could Fly Rhiannon Giddens melody line. I love the practice schedule ideas I’m trying to figure that out so I’m not mindlessly learnt for 8 hours. Never sure how to work through so much information. I won some lessons but It never tells me how long to work at something and it has side lessons for ear training and music theory along with the bluegrass guitar lessons. What I need is a lesson plan. Any way I really want to hear this song broken down so I can lean to play it’s melody not just chords and strumming. A tab would be useful. Even if it’s just a verse and a chorus that’d help a lot.

  • @lew162
    @lew162 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel really lost for the first time since I started following the beginner course. Am I supposed to just play random notes until I find one that sounds kind of right and then repeat that process for like 20 notes in a given melody? Sounds insanely hard and cumbersome, especially since I struggle with finding even a single note. Should I study music theory before starting ear training?

    • @JustinGuitarSongs
      @JustinGuitarSongs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Initially it may sound like random notes and that is exactly what Justin is trying to demonstrate when he plays it in a 'trial and improvement' manner. And this is why you really need to use melodies that are so well known to you. You will know whether the next note is up or down, up a lot or just a bit, down a lot or just a bit. With 5 minutes practice on a regular basis we can all make massive progress in this quite rapidly.

    Happy Birthday is a bit of a tricky tune -- it starts on the 5, not the 1, so once you realize that, it's in F when played in the first position in the video. That helps narrow the note choice. Nothing wrong with using a bit of brain power to help the ears!

  • @joezantingh6737
    @joezantingh6737 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried this for twinkle twinkle little star and to me, it sounded right staring on the open B string to F#.... should I make sure before I start that I'm at least starting on the note, or is it still okay to go through the exercise blind from the start even if you're just slightly off for the whole song, I just don't want to do this exercise and by mistake make bad connections in my mind.
    so I had;
    B B F# F# G# G# F#
    E E D# D# C# C# B
    the correct version after looking it up:
    G G D D E E D
    C C B B A A G
    thanks!

    • @JustinGuitarSongs
      @JustinGuitarSongs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you are trying to find is the melody from any starting note by finding the relative notes based on that start position. It does not matter what note you start in - there are 12 notes and only one of those start notes will put you in the key of the original song. But all are valid melodies just in different keys.
      Cheers 😊

    • @45zapatero
      @45zapatero 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Benzo , thanks for your answer. I agree with you when you are strictly talking about performing eg when improvising bon blues.
      The topic here is hearing a melody and trying to copy it. In that case maybe you could say that knowing the notes and theory in general might help you : eg when a melody has a tonic on a c note and you hear a major third, the scale of the melody is probably c major and the notes are c,d,e,f,g,a,b.
      Or am I wrong again. I am interested in your thoughts since the melody copying exercise is completrly new for me and I find it really difficult.
