Paul Simon was at that performance and when asked what he thought of Elvis's performance of the song. Paul said he was going home and hang his guitar on the wall because there was no way he was going to be able to out perform Elvis's performance, ever. Bless his heart. 😊

Opera singer Kiri Te Kanawa told Michael Parkinson that: Elvis had the greatest voice she had ever heard. Tenor Placido Domingo in an interview said: He was the one voice I wish to have had. Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel said: Elvis was very classically orientated with his voice and diction. Very sincere in wanting to get everything perfect

When Elvis covers a song it becomes his.
There is a reason he is declared the King of Rock-n-roll, his voice, his showmanship and stage presence, his band and back up singers when you went to an Elvis concert you never left feeling you did not get your moneys worth.
As a child growing up where my mom was a huge Elvis Fan his music was a regular staple in our household.
I cannot hear Elvis and not think about my mom and as she passed long ago it is a happy/sad memory at the same time.

Great reaction. Thank you for doing this and great observations. This is Paul Simon's favorite cover of this song. Of Elvis's interpretation, Simon stated (paraphrase) "How the hell am I supposed to match that?" Elvis not only shows off his range and dynamic control, but also his ability to convey emotion with his entire performance. The musical arrangement is also so key to the effectiveness of this performance. Bravo to the piano player (Glen Hardin), the orchestra and the backup singers who provide a gospel flair.

Therefore, he worked with his piano player in putting together arrangements, such is what you see here. It's why I think he's one of the most underrated producers in history. Everything, and I've watched the behind-the-scenes footage where Elvis is working out the arrangement for this with his band and backing vocalists in practice, and it's a terrific insight. Elvis was an amazing arranger. But vocally he kills it and the band just kills it and the backing vocalists just kill it. His sense of nuance and dynamic range there at the beginning is so incredible. And you can hear all the little different flavors to his voice; it's so quiet you could hear a pin drop otherwise. Then he goes all Opera at the end and it just totally kicks ass.

He says that clearly and it recorded. Everyone knows they had a falling out. I think he wanted to hear it in a deeper tone to know if he could have pulled it off. This is my first time viewing your Channel. Being an ELVIS fan since I was a little kid, there's much to explore about him. Not just the 800+ recordings, but also videos showing the humanity of the legend. As he was Blessed, so in turn he gave to others. There's also a 2-Part documentary, "Elvis Presley and The Black Community, That Echo Will Never Die", chronicling his early life, and his hurtles his critics placed on him. Segregation was alive and well, all throughout this time period. I Subscribed to your Channel! THANK YOU!

As commented below, Paul Simon said "How the hell am I supposed to match that?" I was privileged to get to hear Elvis live in the early 70's. Speaking of the price of tickets, my first Elvis concert had me driving with my boyfriend from Nashville to Louisville, KY, and the ticket. cost $10! You had to find out early, though, when the tickets would go on sale or they would sell out. There was no internet back then, and no cable TV. One of my teacher friends, knowing I had been an Elvis fan since early childhood, told me ahead of time that she had heard about the upcoming performance in Louisville that would be advertised the next day in the Sunday paper, and she urged me to order the tickets right then, which I did. Our seats were on the floor, and of course, there was a frenzy when Elvis came out and mostly what I remember is that everyone stood up, of course, and I could not see over them. Back then they did not have the screens to show close ups of the performer. I was able to see him two more times in my hometown of Nashville, but one of my biggest regrets today is that I never saw him live, in Vegas, in a more intimate setting. I would go in a heartbeat today, but back then I was a young, sheltered, Southern, single schoolteacher, and getting on a plane, flying to Vegas, and staying in a hotel is something I just would not have done back then, and surely could not afford. I have gone to Vegas to see several performers now, but it just never occurred to me to go to Vegas at that time. Yes, I do regret that, but am happy I did get to see him live three times, and I am thankful for the videos so I can experience his Vegas performances , his TV performances again, and for all the new young fans, like yourself, he is gaining from these videos. Keep in mind there was no autotune, and Elvis wore himself out performing in Vegas, always doing two shows a night, and sometimes three. It has been said that no one performs that much in Vegas now. Elvis has also, today, been described as a musical servant. I welcome you to the world of Elvis; he deserves all of these new fans. His music was everything to him. He took part in all the arrangements, and it has been said he was actually his own producer. His backup singers and band members knew to watch him at all times. There are classes taught in some universities about the Elvis phenomenon, but suffice it to say he was the first ever entertainer listened to by both black and white audiences. Before then, White people listened to white performers, and black people only listened to black performers. Elvis was white, but had the unique black sound. Elvis feared he would never be remembered. Not so! He is getting many young fans today who recognize his unique talent! RIP, Elvis. Job well done!

All you have to know was Paul Simon watched Elvis perform this song and he said I cannot stop this. Elvis could sing so many other artists songs and do it better then the original artist did with the song that is the Magic of Elvis Presley the one and only King.

Elvis had differents eras (much like The BeeGees!❤) - do Jailhouse Rock (1956 or so), Treat me Nice. Then he went to the Army - excellent on Frank Sinatra show - great harmonies with Sinatra (stay for Stuck on you); then movies (some good songs like Crawfish, Don’t be Cruel, Trouble, Return to Sender, Can’t help falling in love, GI Blues); 1968 Cmback Special is golden (start with Trying to get to you) and then 1970-73 Las Vegas - Just Pretend is a must, How Great thou art, Why me Lord. There are lovely duets between him and his daughter, like Don’t cry Daddy, In the ghetto, Where no one stands alone. Thank goodness for technology.❤
