- Pat Metheny: "What's It All About" (available June 14th)
"To me, there were always several interesting things about this piece," Metheny says of Carly Simon's first major hit (That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be), "not the least of which is the way that she moves from root minor key to the major key just a half step above it so effortlessly in a way that is almost invisible. But also, I always just thought it was a great melody, with that big leap at the end of the first phrase. And form wise, the way it goes through this whole thing and then starts back up again to make the same build again. My take on it harmonically colors in some of what I always thought was implied in there."
After nearly 40 recordings under his own name, this is the first Pat Metheny album where there is not a single Metheny composition represented. This is a personal view of ten classic songs, some very well known, some less so, filtered through the harmonic and melodic ideology of a modern master with a most individual approach.

Been listening to you for 32 years now Pat...you are still the king of the hill to my ears, ...and thank you for ALL of your work.
That note of cord in emotion
An absolute pinnacle of technique, tone, and feel
"it moves me in ways I still don't understand" ..... the first time I heard a Pat Metheny song I had that same reaction...and I still always do. I love this music too... like none other and nothing else ..
I'm a grown ass man, and Pat Metheny can literally bring a tear to my eye at an instant. Always been one of my biggest heroes
when I was 16 my cousin Toni put the san lorenzo tune from patmetheny group's first album...and something changed forever...the way I listen and understand music

Amazing acoustic guitar performance!!! I was impressed very much. Thank you Pat. I remembered the memory of your "The Way Up" concert in Hiroshima, Japan. Because the standing ovation continued forever, You had to say to the audience "Please sit down". You know
For those who still have emotions God sent Pat :)
Excelente Pat, si pudieras producir más temas solo con guitarra, sería fabuloso.
Pat, the soundtrack of my life. Thanks.
In my humble-but-most-accurate opine, very few excel at 'purely-musical' interpretation - then, its revelation on the guitar of compositions by others - better than Mr. Metheny; even those considerable tunes with lyrics. And he's been doing this, exponentially and dramatically, for a long time. He is to be lauded, commended and recommended for his expertise within this unique style. An amazing instrumentalist. I think we kindred recognize genius when it presents itself - and then, to our utter amazement.
Mr. Shank, I read youtube comments with feelings and with thought, and some trepidation, of course. Your words here help me to feel like what I have enjoyed and has thrilled me isn't too far off of what the experienced and talented ones recognize as 'good'. I play some guitar and I loved your words. Thanks.
Happy I got to see him in concert many yrs ago, master of the guitar
I haven't heard Pat in years and stumbled upon this, beautiful.
I love this song and really enjoyed your rendition, Great work!
This speaks to my inner being in ways that most other "music" cannot even come close to!
He takes a perfect song, and brings us an entire new enjoyment
Proof that a melody will set you free
Very very beautiful playing and the sound of the guitar is just exellent
I don't even know why there's a dislike button. God himself wouldn't allow that any of us could dislike this kind of music.
He's been around for many years. He's done some soundtracks. Look up 'the falcon and the snowman' among others. Seen him in concert many times. Tends to play with other jazz artists when he's touring with out his group. He's one of my favorites.

Dear Lord, that is gorgeous!
Technical virtuosity delivers rich emotion Thnks nice cover
Love his music
Brilliant--masterful! Nobody does it better, as I'm sure Carly would agree.
One more show form the master!!!
this song brought tears then and even more so now. great composers, great musicians equal timeless music that can be extracted from the "vault" then reintroduced. Pat M. does it again and again on guitar. Thank you, Carly for the original.
A request for Pat--
I would SO love to see a TAB music book of this new solo album, which I have been very highly anticipating. I am currently building a Baritone to be set up for your "partial Nashville" tuning so that I can learn the tunes you so beautifully transcribed in your "One Quiet Night" book.
All the best to you, and thanks so much for your constant inspiration.

Your skilled my man!!
Amazing stuff Pat, beautiful!
Pat u are my Hero !!!!!!
Nice song! I loved it!
this sounds pretty nice
Pat Metheny's version was beautiful, but I truly like your version more. I played the video at %75 speed and it was close to the original song and added a bit more of that "raining on a sunny day" feel. I would love to hear it replayed a little slower if you ever felt up to it. Either way simply amazing!
Great!
Phrasing is birdsong. Thanks Pat.
It would be so cool to be able to play guitar like this
Perfect!!
Love pat metheny!
love
Pat will you please share that tuning! Beautiful!

That's an overstatement, I suspect. He acknowledges that music comes from a source that transcends the material realm as we understand it. He was raised around (not "in," really) a pretty bizarre sect in Missouri, which probably did quite a bit to cultivate an aversion to religion -- something I share, even though I'm a Christian believer. And yes, I earnestly believe that Pat and his music are gifts from a loving God. :-)
...thanks..
How wonderful... Pat is such a Genius.
does anybody know what is this baritone guitar ?
your music is like a glass of water in the desert
Gênio
Wow!
first arpegio of this song is from another song's first arpegio called que alegria of john mclaughlin
The geniality lies in the simplicity
This didn't really hit me until I played the original (elsewhere here). Gorgeous tune.
only joy
@kasmeria totally agree!!!!
why can't the real world be like this?
