- "This was a huge hit in the late 60's. One day i started playing around with it and while under the hood of the tune I found myself marveling at all the interesting moves that happen with the chords, especially on the bridge. And I used the same whole step modulation for the final A section of the song that was on the record, although I added a tag that is really not exactly derived from any obvious single point in the tune". - Pat Metheny

Played this at my wedding. Sadly my wife died in 2016. Still , this song brings me such joy. Thank you PM
Nancy, so sorry for your loss, dear. Bless your future with love.🥰
Hi Nancy, can you share the guitar tuning of this beautiful song?
Condolences. You chose a prolific song.
Tragic.
Life is full of sorrow.
Remorse.
Beauty.
Pain and happiness.
In the end,
our whole existence is forgotten for most of us.
Let us hope we all meet again in a wonderful place with music as magical as this.
I'm sorry for your loss my dear.
Sorry for you loss , I’m sure she’s watching over you 🙏🕊
Pat doesn't just play the guitar, he uses it to tell a story. No words needed.
Pat Metheney IS a guitar.
Weeping. This is the most beautiful arrangement of Cherish I've ever heard.
Yes, it is truly lovely. Just beautiful.
Every time. It can't be helped.
I was a teenager when this song came out it has always been my favorite now I'm 71 it's still my favorite Pat you did it justice beautiful arrangement.
Pat, I'm so glad that you cover these classic pop tunes and do so with such admiration for the musicality of the originals. Some of the best melodies came from the 60's and 70's and it is refreshing to see how many younger listeners are finally acknowledging these treasures. Your instinct for progressions and haunting bass additions is so spot on. Honestly I missed most of your early career, but I am quickly becoming a new fan in this current age. Hoorah for TH-cam for leading me to your music.
You are very correct what do you think know 9 years later . PM now has attempted most things , i still hope for more covers .just think what his magic would produce
Amen
I wasn't expecting this at all, but as I listened and watched, I found myself tearing up. Such is the power of exquisitely sublime art. Thank you, Pat, for making the world a more beautiful place.
Pat's language reminds me that ordinary and special can be the same.. and beautiful as they are.
Alvart Apoyan Incorrect. If the two can be the same there would be no need to distinguish the two by two different words. The very definition of the word special implies out of the ordinary. The same is true with mere mortals trying to be Pat Metheny. They can never be the same.
An ordinary mood for me can feel special since so much is so 'extra' ordinary now. The same way a song that is aiming to be special and/or different can sometimes evoke an 'ordinary' overdone feeling (in me anyway). It makes sense to me, but I understand what you mean.
It's about loving music, not your ego as musican.
Beautifully said, Alvert! (I'm stealing it :)
@@michaelpark5681 What's so extrordinary about this is its ordinarity, if there is such a word.
Humble, unpretentious, clean, well constructed, passionate, of pure heart, deeply personal, and so perfect. Nothing says "I love you," quite like this. Thank you!
RIP Terry Kirkman. So glad PM did this song justice.
This is the most beautiful piece of music i heard in a long time.
The man transports me to places I have never been before.
Song written by Terry Kirkman and recorded by the Association! Thx Pat as usual for everything you have done for Art and Music in all this time. Really Amazing!
There is little that I can add to all the compliments and praise here. Just wanted to add my own little "WOW" to it.
I have always loved the harmonies in this song. The Association wrote some wonderful stuff, who better to give it air time than Pat Metheny.
The master of solo acoustic guitar renditions of popular songs. Pat has this ability to let us see the real beauty and richness of these seemingly trivial tunes. His arrangements for The Beatles' And I Love Her and Norah Jones' I Don't Know Why are also good examples.
Pat, what a wonderful rendition of a timeless love song. Thank you.
Also on this album- "What's it. all About", Metheny covers Carly Simon's "That's the way I've always heard it should be". It will tear at your heart.
I don't think of Pat Metheny as a guitarist. He does not depend on the guitar - it's idiosyncracies and convenient patterns and configurations - to play and express his creative ideas. Instead he transcends the instrument. He is more than a jazz guitarist. He is a complete musician in every way... and a kind hearted and humble man as well. The same can be said of Lyle, whose passing still brings me sadness with gratitude for all he left us.
Pat, I like your music since the '80, and you impressed me all the time. You help people to appreciate good things of life. For me music is really important. I'm a father and a grand-father and last summer I played that piece on my phone and my 2 year grand-son started moving delicately to the sound of the music. Life is beautiful when those moments occurs. Pat a lot of those moment happens when i'm listening to your music. It goes strait to my heart. Thank you so much.
Mesmerizing....I can listen to this over and over. The beauty and tenderness in which he plays this sends the mind and soul into a calm and relaxed state. Perfection.
I can't ever listen to it only once. Ever. It brings such great joy.
One of the best instrumentals that I have ever heard of this classic Terry Kirkman's 60's megahit!
Lucky me to hear this genius live in Durham NC … Pat was nice enough to stick around and noodle after the show as he had to reschedule the previous engagement due to crappy weather
Pretty sure no one left, anyway
I used to live near RedRocks CO, wish I could have heard him there
He does it his way. Beautifully done Pat
I'm speechless One of my favorite songs What an arrangement Thank you...
One of the truly most underrated guitarists in the popular scheme of things.... but since the general folk seem to go after slosh; I am glad that he is a refreshing secret for those that seek true depth of music from the expression of the soul. It is as if the lyrics came through in this instrumental. Thank you, Pat, for taking all the time you do to bypass the well known "scrap container" (in the popular realm) and giving us meaning through your soul and your instrument!
Heard this rendition just recently and was blown away by the chords and complexity. I remember hearing this as a child but you made it even more special and beautiful.
This brought me to tears. So beautiful

I had just learned Cherish as a chord melody and I stumbled on this. Absolutely hauntingly beautiful. Pat, I followed up Cherish with a chord melody of Up Up and Away Jimmy Webb. 2 of my current obsessions.

Meraviglioso...
Thanks. The song reminds me of a very special friend :)
You need not see what someone is doing
to know if it is his vocation,
you have only to watch his eyes:
a cook mixing a sauce, a surgeon
making a primary incision,
a clerk completing a bill of lading,
wear the same rapt expression,
forgetting themselves in a function.
How beautiful it is,
that eye-on-the-object look.
Or you can close your eyes and listen without interruption. Block everything else out.
Quite possibly the FINEST recording instrumentalist artist of the last 50 years....longevity...quality and body of work second to none...and YES i understand there are "Other"...but for me personally it has always been Pat...and his work.
He was amazing 35 years ago and he's even better now. So gifted.
Muito lindo 💙
It started out nice.
