  • Combining the alluring freedom of both tiny house living and life on the water, this tiny floating house boat is an incredible alternative living solution.
    Become a Living Big Patron: / livingbig
    Designed by Ian Ugarte in collaboration with architect Drew Heath, this tiny house boat, named the Arkiboat, was designed to be strong and lightweight, designed for a life at sea with open views to the surrounding environment, all with an architectural edge.
    You can find our more about this tiny home on our website: www.livingbiginatinyhouse.com/...
    This small home is designed to be a fully functioning boat. It can travel at a decent speed and is comfortable for full time live-aboard life. It can be moored either on a swing mooring, or at a marina and is completely self contained with all the normal holding tanks. It's also completely off-the-grid, generating it's power from a solar system on the roof and capitalising on Australia's high sunshine hours.

      Essentially Crystal Yes, i totally agree :) in many cases, especially with TH-cam channels, the person interviewing makes it weird and unnatural. But here, it’s just like 2 friends talking, like there are no camera there, just as it should be!

      I would prefer a tiny house over a house boat. Mainly because houses are on land and you won’t get sea sick. Also, house boats may potentially sink if there was a fail in architecture or if someone were to make a hole. Not only that, you may have to purchase a private sanctuary on a lake for security as keeping your house on a public lake is very risky and comes with consequences I would not be willing to face at any time such as an active shooter who can easily shoot your boat due to public lakes being open to fit tourists who may want to go for a ride on a boat or maybe even someone like you, a person with a house boat. Not saying your final choice should be a tiny house but I would recommend that choice.

      If you build it right, and light, it's easy to have both. That's what I'm doing now. Design well, and all you're doing is trading a Tiny House foundation for Pontoons or a hull.

    11:16 - Sales Pitch! Price is generally $220K-$230K upwards.
    PLUS: (lots of mess about trying to live cheaper)
    Berthing prices are quotes as $200-$300 per week. That's $1200 per month to rent a hole to put your tiny home in.
    I love the idea, this is just absurd!

    • @sagichdirdochnicht4653
      @sagichdirdochnicht4653 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1200$ a Month will also get you an Appartment even in very expansive cities. Where I live - and of course rents aren't cheap here either - you'll most likely get 100+m² in the city center.
      1200$ a Month for Rent AND you gotta maintain the "building" yourself and pay for all the repairs.
      It's certainly god damn cool, but this falls more under the category "rich mans dreams"

    Love the design but wonder if sliding flywire screens could also be added. Mosquitoes and flies would make life very uncomfortable, not to mention spiders and snakes dropping by if you were moored near the bush on a river somewhere. Thanks for this Bryce. Love your channel.

    Seattle has an entire neighborhood of floating homes! It's really cool. They're on fresh water though, so not as much salt water corrosion, but the salt water is still close by. I've dreamed of living in one ever since watching Sleepless in Seattle.

Seattle would be ideal for houseboat because ALL the waterways are connected! you would have to find out all the places you could dock the houseboat daily, weekly, etc....

    • @jackstrubbe7608
      @jackstrubbe7608 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually more than one neighborhood. You are probably thinking about the very tony docks on Lake Union where Sleepless In Seattle was filmed. Which is crazymaking in its activity. There are others along the ship canal, but my favorites are along the Duwamish Slough. While those are mostly industrial in nature, some are near or adjacent to reclaimed and restored small riparian nature preserves where wildlife, particularly shorebirds, are returning. I have one friend who lives that way, and another friend, a native American, who helped spearhead some of that ongoing restoration. Best of both worlds.

    • @kimberlyconner1439
      @kimberlyconner1439 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm from Seattle. Born and raised in the suburbs. I know how expensive it is here. I've looked at house boats for sale. They range from $100,000 to $300,000 for a couple bedrooms and a place to moor. If you want a house boat that actually looks like a house, or has more bedrooms, more bathrooms, is maybe bigger in square footage, has a party deck, maybe more than one floor, yeah, the price is going to jump up into regular house prices and higher, like into the millions.

      The affordability yes... congratulations but i reckon the TOP deck would have made such a huge difference... even just for a small wine deck.. with a slide a slipper slide down to the water ..thanks Bryce but this one definitely not a fav.

    (no bragging just sharing an experience I experienced once in my life) when I was 15 I once stayed on a house boat for one day one night and let me tell you it was amazing. It was just like this boat, 3 bedrooms one kitchen (seperately) a large living room and one staff room. My bedroom had a huge window covering one whole wall. It was beautiful watching the water just flow laying on my bed. We were 3 small families sharing a boat and no it was not conjusted ☹️. It was easily my most luxurious experience.
    Edit- we had our own washrooms
    What would I give to experience it one more time 😭

      FYI, Bryce---In MN there are houseboats in the Voyageurs National Park near the Canadian border.. You can rent them. And they are taken out of the water in the late Fall (on a boat hoist). Also you do see other lakes in the Boundary Waters area of MN with houseboats And there are houseboats on the Mississippi River too.

      "Woonboten" are a very normal thing in the Netherlands. Not just in the canals of Amsterdam.

    • @lovecinnamonxx
      @lovecinnamonxx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Maarten Jongkind yeah, but I feel like most modern Dutch house boats aren't really independently moving boats anymore, but actual houses that need to be moved by other boats, which so happen to be in water. At least the ones I've been on 😄 Of course there are still the older boats that can actually go places tho :D

    • @eddiehope8291
      @eddiehope8291 6 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Hi Maarten, you are correct as in Holland many people live on Housboats/Woonboot! Me included.
      Some forty years ago! I bought it when I got married and our first 6 years of marriage was spend on this houseboat. It was great, although ours couldn't move (it was permanently situated in that spot) but for that we got access to Electricity and Town water! And because it was permanently situated opposite a grain silo, we had new neighbours every week. These were the boats that came to unload their grains and than moved on again! The life on a houseboat is awesome! We had a balcony where our bicycles were kept but also gave us the room to fish or swim from. Actually we could fish from every room we had, by opening the windows! Living room, Kitchen, Dining room and even Bedroom! One extreme thing I would like to mention is that growing plants (...oh, no not those type Lol,
      ....but maybe you could????) but just the ones you put in the window, and anything else that is colour sensitive, would either struggle or thrive in these conditions! This is, because of the double reflection of the sun rays; 1) directly from the sun. or 2) second, the reflection of the sun-rays from the water! And that is amazing to watch!!!! Many plants will grow twice as big and fast, while others just shrivel up and burn. I'd live on a houseboat forever, if I had the opportunity.

    Everyone from America commenting this is expensive doesn’t understand how much it costs to live in Australia.
    I paid $325,000 for a very tiny two bedroom cottage 30 miles from Brisbane (nearest city to where this guy is).
    I got an absolute bargain - the bank valued it and I could sell it today for $400,000. It’s costs to live here, but wages are higher so it evens out.

    • @Yeet42069
      @Yeet42069 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know what the fuck you do for work but 400k for a tiny cottage doesn't seem like anything you can pay for or want to pay for in a reasonable time frame. Wages are higher but I strongly doubt they ''even out''.

      built it here in the philippines. Labor is cheap. You could probable make one with 8000usd. About the engine, you could probably make one from old diesel cars. Only downside. It would be loud. But cheap.
