    So many haters out.....that's why there's options out there. Go buy the truck/car/SUV u want. This is just a insightful MPG review on a truck that ppl may be interested in purchasing.

      +P Pha I agree. People complaining about the price never intended on purchasing the vehicle anyway. Also so many people are closed minded. I believe Nissan completely nailed the mark of what they were trying to achieve. Can an F150 tow 11,500 lbs? Sure but how well does it do it in all areas. How will the Ecoboost stay together after towing years like this? Just like anything else there are many questions which people are asking for a new platform but to say it is a piece of junk would be premature. The engine, transmission, frame, brakes are all designed with the torque of a diesel in mind. So in theory it should stay together well. If it is built anything like a the rest of Nissan trucks then it will be rock solid. These same people complaining are probably the ones when the Ecoboost pulls state that it is a piece. All manufacturers have issues- GM has issues with the displacement on demand wiping the lifters out, camshaft and wasting the bottom end of the engines-just recently MT had reported several technology issues with the GMC had to go back to the dealer several times. Ford has issues with Ecoboost ejecting rods out of the side of the engine-who really runs 87 octane in boosted truck? If you can't afford to put fuel in it then you can afford the vehicle. Ram is plagued with quality issues. Old Titan & Toyota has bad fuel Economy, the list goes on. I work in the automotive industry and I deal with these closed minded individuals everyday. Statements of I am going to buy a Chevy because it is the best. What? On what basis? The interior will fall apart after 100K, the buttons won't be able to be read at that time either due to them being worn off and also what about that LS tick? If that is what you like then who am I to say it is junky? I just won't buy that brand. I will vote with my wallet. I am willing to give this truck a chance in the future. The pricing is on par with all the other 1/2 ton trucks . Heck an Ecoboost FX4 in my area had a window sticker of $62K. Now down to reality they probably wasn't going to get it but still! $60K for a fully loaded Titan is definitely competitive. I am aware you can purchase a 3/4 ton for around mid 50's but some people aren't ready to make that jump. I am not so that is the reason for my consideration. Will this recipe fit others? They are the only ones who can answer that.

    I liked this video, not because of the truck, but because you guys gave a great review. This was the first towing review that I've seen of the new Titan without Nissan reps present. I can really say that "I saw it first on the Fast lane Truck". Keep up the good work!

    All you people worrying about gas mileage if you can't afford to fill the damn tank you shouldn't be driving a truck period. Why don't you wait and see how it handles heavy loads.

    I'm sorry, I don't own a truck or a trailer but I really don't understand what all the fuss is about over mpg?
    Lets say you're going on a 500 mile journey, towing your boat or horse trailer or whatever. At 11 mpg you'll need 45 gallons to complete your journey, at 17 mpg you'll need 29 gallons. Thats a 16 gallon difference. At an average diesel fuel cost of $2 in the US, that'll cost you $38.
    You have a $50,000 truck, a $5,000 trailer, and a $30,000+ boat, and you're complaining about $40 bucks of fuel?

    • @jimmycundiff5151
      @jimmycundiff5151 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      60,000$ truck with a diesel that is expected to far surpass gasoline mpg....however it doesnt. so yeah we can nitpick. when gas goes back up we will be fucked.

    • @888TopGear888
      @888TopGear888 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Jimmy Cundiff Again you're ignoring my initial statement. I have a friend who bought a $150,000 wake surfing boat. If he complains to me about mpg I will slap him in the face. He pays $200 to fill up the tank in his boat... so he can go surfing on a lake...
      If you have enough money to buy a toy or a huge 12,000 pound mobile home, you shouldnt be complaining over 30 dollars.
      You don't buy a diesel truck for the mpg, you buy it for its low end torque. And nothing from Ford has 550 lb ft of torque unless you buy a super duty with the 6.7 liter V8 that has over 800. But that thing gets 15 mpg when its not towing.. So it doesnt seem like the Nissan is as bad as everyone says it is.

    • @jimmycundiff5151
      @jimmycundiff5151 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +888TopGear888 I don't get how you can just throw MPG out of the window. it is a big decision maker in people buying these trucks. I have a $50k 2014 silverado, I tow my expensive ass motor cycles to the drag strip all the time and sometimes boats. do I care about MPG yep. just because your friend doesnt, doesn't mean other people dont. Every truck (besides Tundra) built today is built around getting good fuel mileage.
      Chevys displacement on demand. Dodges eco-diesel and their hemis displacement on demand. Fords ecoboost engines. and now Nissan built this truck "to have great fuel economy while towing" Those are words from Toyota marketing manager.

    • @jimmycundiff5151
      @jimmycundiff5151 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Zachary Strain lead the pack in maybe performance but MPG was always terrible on the tundras. 4.30 gear, that's why. in 2007 Dodge and Chevrolet both had displacement on demand.

    • @888TopGear888
      @888TopGear888 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Zachary Strain I never said mpg isn't at all important. Im saying that its moronic to judge trucks based of a bunch of numbers (highest torque/hp and best mpg)
      There is no point in watching a 15 minute video from a so-called "dedicated truck review channel" just to see what a truck's mpg is. Especially when at the end of the day, the difference is only 30-50 bucks on a 500 mile journey.
      If I were going to buy a truck, I'd care more about its performance, rather than its mpg. Things like:
      Which truck is the most confidence inspiring and stable when I'm towing 12,000 pounds and doing 70 mph? Which is the most nervous?
      Which has the best maneuverability and handling at high speed while towing a trailer (collision avoidance)?
      Which is the easiest to drive on a tight, uphill mountain road while towing a motor home?
      Which has the best traction control system and all wheel drive system? Which is the most capable offroad or in the snow while towing (towing snowmobiles)?
      I think the reason +The Fast Lane Truck isn't conducting these tests is because mpg is the easiest one.

  • @timothyparks2531
    @timothyparks2531 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Truck was getting 19 mpg then to 14 mpg. It went thru a exhaust regen. In other words it dumps fuel in the exhaust to heat it up for the DPF cleaning. This only happens a few times every 1000 miles. But you do lose fuel economy for about 20 miles.

      I doubt it. I only picked up a couple on my 6.7PSD and my hp/tq to weight ratio is way better than the xd. It has a 3.92 rear gear, because they realized it's underpowered. Not much is going to help that truck.

      Hydrocarbons and NOX
      Hydrocarbons = Unburned fuel (black smoke)
      ^ Typically a timing issue and/or injector issue
      NOX = Gas created during combustion event
      ^ Issue is emissions and is reduced significantly through diesel exhaust after treatment systems such as SCR or the One-box system.
      In any instance however, they didn't have pulse width modulation fuel injection years ago. The advancement od electronically-controlled injection aided to better performance, a more efficient burn during the combustion event, AND better emissions.
      On newer diesel engines, adding horsepower is as simple as connecting to the ECM and changing it.
      ***Note: Diesel engine manufacturers regulate engine horsepower based on the criteria of application. This is done to reduce damage to the drivetrain and chassis frame (specifically on HD trucks).
      When it comes down to fuel efficiency however, it boils down to power to weight to axle ratio.

    list price for an XD with proper towing options is about $50-55k. not worth the price, when a similar optioned 3/4T lists for only 6% more, and gives more of everything for same mpg. Nissan needs to drop the price by $10-12k.

      +Rob Grune update. the new Ford F150 3.5L eco can be configured for 12k towing and greater payload than this XD, with very adequate HP and Torque, with equal or better mpg, no-rust body, etc, for about $10k less overall.

  • @CallsignVega
    @CallsignVega 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I like the Titan XD but I couldn't ever buy one. Less payload ratings than a F150, pretty crazy for a "5/8" diesel pickup. Capabilities less than a modern F150 1/2 ton, the weight of a super duty but with worse fuel economy. The Titan XD just doesn't make any sense.

    Smh, all these comments about how inefficient this truck is. It was 13,250 lbs and returned 11 mpg. That's damn good! The 6.2 chevy was 12,000 lbs and got 10.5 mpg on premium gas. This is the most efficient "1/2 ton" truck period!

  • @HDsgs114
    @HDsgs114 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Very unimpressive. I think the last Ram 2500 diesel they tested got over 20mpg on the same test loop when empty and it has 800ftlbs of torque. I think it was a 2wd but still it wouldn't drop the fuel mileage that much if it was a 4x4. The Titan is too heavy and underpowered. It would make much more sense to buy a real HD truck or any other half ton for that matter.

    I am glad that you showed us what kind of mileage the truck gets while not towing. Thank you. I wish you guys had done that with the 2016 Tacoma. The mileage while not towing was pretty bad, at least in my opinion. I would think that you could have done better (as far as MPG's) with a RAM 2500 with the Cummins diesel. And it would probably cost less. Great job.

    This is the exact same fuel mileage on the titan shown here as my internal testing with all the new diesel trucks, except my ecodiesel, so this truck is right in line with all the heavy duty diesels.
    The 2015 cummins big horn got 11.5mpg average with my 7000lb trailer,
    The 2015 duramax ls 11.5mpg same 7000lb trailer
    2014 ram ecodiesel 17mpg same 7000lb trailer $ 160,000 miles averaged
    Fuck ford.
    2015 5.7l hemi 13mpg same 7000lb trailer
    2015 5.3l gm ls direct injected gas 11.5mpg average same 7000lb trailer
    These are all the vehicles i rented for the two months my truck was down, so i calculated all the fuel mileages every night.
    The cummins and duramax tests were also done by two other route drivers renting those same 2015 models, @ 60mph so they were the same as my tests.
    Nice job nissan, truck looks nice.

      +Brandon A friend's Ram 2500 Cummins was struggling to get 16 mpg on the highway. He pulled the emissions equipment out of it. Now he is getting 20-22 mpg. I'm not entirely convinced that burning half again as much fuel really saves any emissions.

    • @4x4le
      @4x4le 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1guyin10 you are correct in assuming this and a basic knowledge of chemistry destroys most arguments for having emissions equipment, at least in the context that its for climate change prevention. Any amount of fuel burnt creates a certain amount of co2, burning less creates less. So emissions regulations are "sold" to us or justified because the fear of global warming but they are intended to do other things. Visible emissions (black smoke) which are also part of HC (unburned hydrocarbons), NOx are the things that all the emissions equipment are meant to deal with however co2 and h20 emissions increase with decreased fuel economy. co2 and h20 is where any possibility of global warming or climate change comes from, which I am not totally sold on (quite the opposite actually) considering they are obviously being very misleading toward this entire thing anyways.

    • @4x4le
      @4x4le 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frank Magana The high pressure common rail system in and of itself is an emission control device. I like many aspects of high pressure common rail but It would be very sweet to have mechanical options out there still. Take for instance a fully deleted 6.7 cummins and get a mpg figure then convert it over to a mechanical injection setup, you would not expect to see much change mpg wise. It could go up or down but it would most likely go up some. There would be more black smoke vs the deleted common rail setup too which is unburned fuel. So how is it not burning some of the fuel but getting better fuel economy? The high pressure common rail pump is a huge parasite. 26,000 psi of fuel pressure takes allot of engine work to accomplish. So although you are able to burn more of the fuel due to the higher pressure it reclaims that energy in order to make that pressure that it requires to operate. This creates more co2 and h20 (yes water) vs the old style system.
      They also have an egr system, which I am all for on a gas engine with a throttle plate because it actually reduces the pumping losses on those engines and gains it economy. An egr system is like a cancer to a diesel. Soot it trapped and released in places meant for nothing but clean air and air flow. The coolers are often problematic and the only real reason for them on a diesel is to reduce the NOx (which I agree NOx is bad) that was caused by other modern diesel emissions.
      Yes there is a cat, a diesel oxidation catalyst or usually referred to as a DOC. It works similarly to that on a gas car. Since CO is not a gas produced with diesels usually it is not needed for that function. They are not especially usefull at converting NOx either. The do take some of the unburned hc (raw fuel that didnt begin to burn and turn to black smoke) and burn it but that is usually a very low quantity and its easy to argue that its best to just leave that unburned.
      They also have diesel particulate filters (DPF) which trapps the black smoke which is actually soot. It is fuel that started to burn but then flamed out. It is said to cause cancer, and I agree that nothing but pure clean air is all our lungs are designed to handle, however there is actually NO science showing that diesel particulate causes cancer. The studies that have been performed show that in industrialized areas have a higher rate of the residents having cancer. The cause could be many things but in the studies they used the correlation equals causation method (which is almost always inaccurate) and decided to blame the fact that there are allot of diesel vehicles in those industrialized areas. Case closed since all they have to do is repeat it enough and make new laws (I mean regulations) that no one gets to vote on anyways. Once the DPF traps the soot and gets full, raw fuel is shot into the exhaust stream and other engine conditions are met allowing that fuel to ignite and the soot in the dpf is burned off. The raw fuel turns to co2 and h20 and the soot is mostly carbon as the hydrogen has burned off first. So mostly a bunch of co2 that never needed to be created is during that process. Also fuel that does not go to propelling the vehicle is being used.
      Now due to all the heat that is created by the backpressure of these emissions systems more nox than ever is being produced so they had to come up with something for that since nox is arguable the only thing to even be concerned with as far as diesel emissions go. So they have Diesel exhaust fluid or def or blue or whatever names it goes by. I am not against the use of this stuff. It isnt cheap but you dont use much so it is still economic. It really dont impact your fuel mileage because it is ran by electronics (which yes is driven off your engine) and is very low draw. It sprays to your exhaust stream and the ammonia that is released is able to react with nox and convert it to other non harmful combinations.
      If we could just have old style mechanical injection with water injection/water meth injection, along with vgt turbos or compound turbo setups and possibly even DEF injection in the exhaust we would have the cleanest, most fuel efficient and possibly even the most reliable engines (diesel or otherwise) that this world has ever seen.
      Sorry for being so long winded. I am passionate about this. I tune engines as a hobby now, used to be for a living, and seeing that all this shit is just a burden to us that actually creates a worse problem that it is tasked to solve in order to line the pockets of some leaves a horrid taste in my mouth.

      +The Fast Lane Truck I was expecting much Better MPG from a diesel truck like this. On Fulley, people are reporting 16-17mpg average (mix) with the Cummins 6.7L, which makes more power, tows more, higher payload, similar in size. You guys got 16.7mpg doing hwy only. Why would someone buy this when a 250/2500 series truck offers the same MPG, with more power and capability.
      Only thing I can think of is Price, not sure what the others would cost compared to this.

    • @xXBurntBaconXx
      @xXBurntBaconXx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was watching the same tow test they did with the 6.2L Silverado. Fully loaded it was also 50k. That got 10.1 MPG towing the same trailer on the same course. But the Silverado is going to be cheaper to run as its a gas motor, smaller so its easier to maneuver, it will probably hold its value a bit better. I'm pretty sure a Silverado with the 5.3L V8 would get the same MPG as the Titan towing the same load. If I was going to tow 12,000lbs daily, then I would go with a 2500 series truck with a diesel. If I'm going to tow 12,000 lbs once in awhile, then I would go with a regular 1/2 ton and save some money.
      The engine sounds pretty awesome on paper though, would be great to swap into Jeeps and off road vehicles. Or hell would be great to have in a Van/Box truck.

    Here is what I don't quite get. The diesel Titan XD Pro4X with a 4 door cab and 6.5 foot bed, weighs 7000 pounds, 4x4 w/ off road package,a Cummins 5.0 liter V8 with 310 hp and 555 lb/ft, a 6 speed transmission and 3.90 gears and it gets 17 mpg highway. My dad has a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 (non-dually) with a 4 door cab and 6.5 foot bed, weighs 7000 pounds 4x4 w/ off road package, the 5.9 liter Cummins I-6 with 325 hp and 610 lb/ft, a 4-speed automatic and 4.10 gears, over 200k miles and it still gets 24 mpg on the highway. WHY? Why does a 10 year old truck with basically the same configuration and more power and fewer mpg saving features get so much better gas mileage? I could see them being a few mpgs difference, but 7mpg, that is almost 30%.
    (Edited to add gear ratio on Titan)

  • @alexdevries3554

    2016 Ram Ecodiesel: 5000k. $39,000. Highway mpg: 32. City mpg: 25. Towing 6500ish lbs: hwy/city mpg: 23. Best MPG: 35.4. These numbers are nearly double what we see here... It's no wonder Ram looked elsewhere for this endeavor. Cummins should have stepped up. I don't see the appeal other than the name. Waiting game. Personally I like the way it looks. Pretty heavy though. Definitely not practical for a guy/gal who wants an everyday truck.

  • @Tonar18
    @Tonar18 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Eeeeesh😬. Time to scratch the Nissan off the consideration list! That mileage is horrendous. Ram Ecodiesel did 33 mpg on the hwy test. (Guessing it would be around 15-16 towing the 5600 lb trailer). 6.2 Chevy looks most impressive so far low 20's Hwy, 10 mpg towing and can almost match Nissan in Max towing in a pinch you need to haul a heavier load. I'm sure Nissan doesn't like this video out there before these trucks hit the lot. Very bad publicity. Thanks guys for your videos. Now let's see 2.7 eco boost & Ecodiesel pull that 5,600 lb trailer!

  • @cragre28
    @cragre28 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is not good mileage for a 'heavy 1/2 ton", especially since I consistently get over 19 mpg with a 2006 Chevrolet K3500 dually with Duramax unloaded at 72-75 mph on the highway. I also managed to average 11.5 mpg over a 2100 mile round trip with a gooseneck trailer in tow that grossed out at 21,000 lbs to Boston and 15,100lbs coming back home to Georgia. This was in 12-28 degree weather with winter diesel running just over 70 mph both ways with a trailer that did not have a v-nose like the trailer in this video has. So a truck that is over 1000 lbs lighter, with 1.6 less liters of displacement can't beat a 10 year old truck in fuel mileage or power, 310 hp and 500 ft lbs for the Nissan versus 360 and 650 for the 2006 6.6 Duramax? I'd have to agree with many here on emissions as I believe 2006 was the sweet spot in terms of emissions requirements versus fuel mileage. A diesel 2/3 ton in 2016 with a 5.0 diesel should be getting at least 24 mpg combined. I really wanted Nissan to knock this out of the park, because I no longer need a 1 ton truck and over 20 mpg with the ability to tow over 10k when needed could have provided my ideal truck.

  • @SinSGone
    @SinSGone 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was really looking forward to this truck but am disappointed with the results. I have a 2006 Ram 2500 2wd Cummins. Driving a 250mi trip from middle CA to southern CA I get 25mpg hwy at 70. When I tow a 10lb fifth wheel from hwy 395 to Las Vegas through Death Valley, I get 12mpg and there are multiple serious grades. Both results are hand calculated just as these guys do. I know my truck is 2wd, but my Dad has an 05' 4wd and his cummins gets 1mpg less than mine. I thought with this truck being "kind of" a 1/2 ton and with less power, it would be better and with the tow rating sufficient for me, possibly the next truck for me. Emissions have killed the diesel. I will keep my 06 until it dies I guess. Long live the +20mpg heavy duty diesels :-(

    I did a 2008 ford 6.4l, head gaskets, arp studs, egr delete, dpf delete, and a spartan tuner. Slight adjustments to the fuel rails, stock cam and stock block. the truck made 706hp on the wheel dyno, and over 1400tq. customer daily drove and claimed his wife would get 31 U.S mpg and he would get 27. Thats tuning, and emissions B.S gone. We then did find the torque shift did have a weak spot. Input shafts would shatter. 4WD burn outs in a F-350 is pretty fucken fun though!!!

  • @joelcummings
    @joelcummings 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not terribly impressive. I gotta say wouldn't you as a buyer just be tempted to take a slightly lower trim GMC/Ford/Ram 250/2500? With those trucks you get very similar (possibly better) MPG but you get roughly 250-300 more lb ft of torque. I think Nissan has 2 problems with their truck the first being weight, 7200lbs is a lot of vehicle to move, and second would be the 6 speed tranny, everyone else is moving to more speeds in their transmissions. Maybe 5 years ago this truck would have been impressive but not today.

    Nissan really dropped the ball with this truck. It weighs more than the F150, can't tow nearly as much or haul and get poor fuel economy compared to their DOHC 5.0 gas engine. It maybe the poor fuel economy could be because the engine is a single overhead cam design rather than the traditional OHV (push rod). I know from experience OHV will get better mpg than SOHC engines in some cases but SOHC will flow air better. It could be they chose a craptastic transmission to put behind it rather than an 8 speed which probably would have helped out.

    The reason this truck cost 60 thousand dollars is because it has 4 doors and all the options Nissan can stack on it, and none of that has anything to do with its trailer towing ability. Although it isn't bad for an "extra duty" truck the fuel mileage isn't all that impressive. This is only slightly better than what you would see with HD diesels. A gasoline engine in a similar truck would probably see somewhere in the 12-14 empty highway mpg, so the diesel is better. It is easy to see why RAM chose not to go with this engine. They have the HDs for people that want to tow big loads and could never get appropriate mpg for a daily driver half-ton out of this Cummins. I think the only real question is why Nissan didn't try to beef this truck up a bit more and put more room between it and the half tons as far as towing capability.

      6.2 technically calls for premium gas so diesel is cheaper but mainly it’s the way they tow it just handles it better. it was cold af out that affects Diesel engines significantly on mpg . 6.2 is a bad ass motor though lol

    If you want a power wagon but think its too much, well this is your truck... with the pro4x package of course.

    Since this truck is in between 1500 and 2500 where will it be placed for the Hitch Award or is this still under discussion?

    5600 Lb trailer? Put real trailer behind it - something right at the max ratings and big like a 5th wheel camper - and then show me the numbers on that run.

    So not only is it ugly as hell the fuel mileage sucks too. Great job Nissan you have a 50k plus turd.

    Probably should of put another gear or two on there. Upped the compression ratio. Cut down on weight. Something.
