Been a caseless pixel fold user since day 1 and it's in perfect condition. I generally take care of my stuff but I'm not putting any extra effort into taking care of this phone vs any other. The only "damage" is something that my previous pixels suffered from, which is the chrome finish having a ton of micro scratches. I've even replaced the internal screen protector (even tho Google says not to) 4 times so far because i wanted a matte one and was trying various brands. The removal and install went the same as any phone with no issues whatsoever
I use Pixel Fold with no special care, no case, just a protective glass on the front display, fell off to the ground several times from the pocket or hands, even to concrete floor, just scratches. I think it does not make sense to read such articles, either they were so unlucky or it is just a smear campaign...
Just to clarify - I know that things can go wrong with any phone, but I use foldables since the first Samsung Fold and had all lines and my wife all Flips, my teenage sons inherited the old versions and since now, one of my sons destroyed 1 Flip when it fell down onto the stones and one Fold when he threw it in fury on the wall... I was lucky that with the normal use, nothing dramatic happened. So hopefully my journey will continue 😊
I had my pixel fold in my back pocket and fell hard on top of it. I'm not exactly the lightest person lol and the phone got squished hard and slid across the cement. Inside display and front display was totally fine. Back plate had 2 big cracks from the initial fall. Some scratches on the hinge. Fixed the back plate with Google for $160. Perfectly fine with no case still. My fold 5 fell on a dirt ground a few times when I went camping. Got scratches on the hinge and crunched when I open and closed it for a couple of days. It been totally fine since. Dropped in a few times on hard woods and its totally fine. I don't use a case either. They're built strong.
I totally agree with you. I had a fold 5 with no case and dropped in on a hospital floor and it had a itsy tiny scratch on the frame and I also dropped my OnePlus open on the ground and nothing. That bend test Jerry did when I watched it I said who takes any phone and tries to snap it in two. I think the only way the inner screen will be damaged is from a factory problem and not a human problem in most cases
I've deopped mine as well, have a £10 (15 dollar) case on it and nothing. Not a thing. It's in my pocket every day at work, so i definitely don't baby the thing. I do put pressure on the hinge to try and get it to fold flat when its on a table but not the Zac kind of pressure!! Overall it's a well made, solid and lovely bit of kit and couldn't be happier.
Shane...the timing of this video is unbelievable, I watched it last night and thought 'theres no way a piece of dust could cause damage to my pixel fold' cut to 24 hours later, I'm in the airport and unfold my pixel fold only to notice these 2 large'ish black blobs on either side of my inner screen with a green line going half way through the screen. Upon closer inspection there is in fact a bit of dust which must of come from my pocket and has wrecked my inner screen, can't believe it. When I get back I'm going to reach out to Google but if I don't get anywhere I may just claim my insurance and get a OnePlus open.
I use my pixel fold as my main device in a warehouse in a steel mill since day 1 of release with plenty of dust sand and metal debris, I don't baby this device at all and have had no issues at all, this phone gets treated no different than any other device I own, it has been to the beach and used there a bit also with no problems, some of these people just try there best to find something negative to say about this device, keep up the great vids on calling this stuff out Shane.
I was totally babying it in the beginning. Now i have more confidence in it, i still dont throw it around like i used to my pixel 5. It fell a few times by acident but still mostly fine, except for a small scratch on the camera lens. However its no rugged phone 😅
I would simply not try to deliberately snap my phone in half. I don't baby mine but I don't abuse it either. The only real damage mine has taken is a small scratch on the hinge and some scuffs on the bezels from when I dropped it face down onto a dirt road. There was a tiny dent in the screen after removing the screen protector but it's no longer visible after putting a matte screen protector on.
You think common sense would be enough but nope. After the TH-camr bent the iPhone 6 and it went viral you wouldn't believe how many people bent their phones to see if it were true. I worked at the genius bar during that and I would say "did you bend it with your hands on purpose?" They'd say yes lol I'd be like okay cool that's $369 please haha and stop doing what you see on TH-cam. Bendgate was a rough time for us Apple employees 😂
Right Shane I've had mine since launch I work with dust and chemicals around me no problems. I've also had it at the beach everyday in Miami. No one does that to their phone like Zach
Nice shirt. Excellent video. I appreciate your honesty. My favorite feature is the spatial speakers. Brilliant design. The Pixel Fold is one of the best phones on the planet.
I don't have a problem in terms of the screen or outside durability but more often, the number 1 thing that breaks on samsung foldables are the flex ribbon inside, it breaks overtime and it causes issues as such no wifi, no sound or no display. The pixel fold fixed this issue by not using a flex ribbon, they are using actual cables which they hide on the top and bottom hinge hence their hinge design.
Maybe it's questions from people considering their 1st foldable? I bought a Z Flip and thought I'd really have to baby it, but in a case it's been fine and dropped more than a few times and the fold screen is holding up well.
So far no issues other than an annoying software issue of black screen for like 15seconds when opening the fold. Hopefully it gets fixed asap but I don't baby it, just careful I don't drop it... 🤷
Dropped my fold on metal, concrete, etc using casetify and Latercases. Havent had any issues with my screen or the outside but i do have a little scratch on the plastic border piece on the inside of the screen just from dust and lint that gathers. I probably only open the inner screen a couple times every other day.
Honestly foldables have been getting more durable the last couple years. I remember my Samsung z flip . The FIRST GEN, although the screen never cracked, the screen protector on it started too! Have not experienced that with my Pixel Fold in the same amount of time.
Just this week my fold fell out of my coat pocket on to the pavement. I immediately freaked out of course. But my phone nor my case showed any damage. I was relieved and also glad I had a case on it. But I don't baby it.
my pixel fold is a tank and had it since release. no case, only front glass screen protector. dropped about 3 times already and perfectly fine. i don’t baby it and often toss it on to my bed at night too 😂
I'm on my second device personally. It developed a bump in the crease, Google support replaced my device. My second device has developed a bump too. I've got some heavy scratches on my inner display, I've had things caught between the lip of the screen and the lip of the bezel that left a hefty dent in it and the device worked fine. Just bumpy screen issues for me.
In the inner crease of my pixel fold. If i run my finger down the crease it seems like i feel hardware slightly poking through. The crease isn't smooth all the way down. Also where i feel the bumps at if i look at a purre white screen from specific angle it seems as if i xan maybe see the hardware as well. Knock on wood that it does not cause it to fail in the future.
lol my Fold is a tank , , i doubled the magnetic ring on the back of the case and its Rock solid on an mount and still has wireless charging, . I dropped my phone pretty hard and got just the tinnest dent in the in outside metal spine after a 10 ft drop onto a wood floor.
I have the Open, not the fold, but I was in my shower and tried to blindly place my phone in a safe spot. Apparently I didn't put it where I thought and seconds later I hear my phone bouncing off the tile and sliding across the floor because it's so damn heavy. I also couldn't see where it impacted once I got out.
Using pixel fold rn. Have had it for months and dropped it a bunch of times with and without the official Google case and no issues whatsoever. But literally a few days ago it fell from my bed to the floor and the entire hinge is now broken and won't fold/unfold properly
I've heard you talk about your pixel stand 2. I've gone thru 2 of them and from what I can figure out, when I put a magsafe case on my pixel. It screws up the pixel stand to where it doesn't align correctly anymore. I got mine with the pixel 6 and it was fine. The upgraded to the 7 pro was fine until I put the mous case on it then it would work right from then on. Then I bought my second stand. With the fold. I got the pikata case and then the second one store working right. Have you had it heard of others having the same problem?
Yeah, that article was basically fear mongering, heck I use mine all the time down in my basement in my workshop when i'm doing woodworking which make a very dirty environment with sawdust in the air, never been an issue.
What's really annoying is that I filmed this like 6 days ago and since then I've seen at least 3 more reddit threads asking if dust will destroy the screen. It's pervasive.
Most of the guys posting the “will my fold break” posts have never had a foldable before tbh. I have 2 really blunt takes: 1.) Buy preferred care and don’t worry about it (I buy the added insurance on all my devices because I don’t typically run a case) 2.) it’s a foldable, it’s more delicate BUT it’s not gonna just break for no reason. I don’t necessarily “take care” of my daily driver pixel fold. I use it just like I use my Pixel 8 pro or my iPhone 15 PM. It gets thrown onto my bed, put in my pocket, used through out the day. Don’t be dumb and push into the crease of the device when closing it and you will be fine
Adding comment: I think the failure rate of the Open might be the highest of the bunch. There seems to be a defect on the Open which causes the plastic hinge cover to push up into the display. Not really sure why that’s happening PF & ZF seem to be the most solid. If OP customer support was better the failures wouldn’t be as bad
My One PLus Open inner screen broke from something in that very area. But it looked like a micro pebble, because there was a divet found in that area. I was careful to clean the inside, but something got in there?
Unfortunately, someone has to be the unlucky one to get a lemon. Anything mass produced will have a certain percent go bad. Coming from the Automotive industry, I know how true this is lol.
The anti foldable brigade are out scaremongering all the time. They would have people believing these phones will just break if you even open them up ??😂 Theyre now more durable than they have ever been. I have no fears for my one plus open at all
Yea I've dropped all my foldables at some point. People would legit lose their mind if they knew my usage. I've taken folds to the beach, I've had them in the pool with me to get pics of my kids. Like I paid way to much to baby it and act like I can't use it the way I want. I treat it like any other phone, get a warranty just in case and keep it moving
I took came from a SD2 and have not treated it any differently than I would a standard slab phone and it's great. No problems. Actually think the thickness and the extra weight helps me to prevent drops. I'm loving this phone.
I've dropped my pixel fold many times. Had it since Day 1. No Case. There are scratches and scuffs everywhere! Still working like a champ and I have not been babying this thing at all. lol Edit: Additionally, Ive accidentally slid a credit card between the thing while folded and feared the worst. But only thing was that the screen protector was scratched, and now I can't even see it.
If I want to grow my channel which is already growing, I'm going to have to sacrifice an 1800 phone which would set me back a damn long way financially. Terrible advice lol You know what's a useful durability test? Someone just using the phone like a normal person and then reporting how durable it's been, which is exactly what this is.
I don't know why these You Tubers like Jerry Rigg put enormous force on a phone to break it, call it fragile, and think people are going to do this in real life.

The OP Open passed Zack's bend test with flying colors, yet I don't think he was as brutal with it as his treatment of the P Fold was.
I honestly don't think it matters at all
I can hear macho man now, Snap into a pixel....... I Agree with you totally. If dust damaged those fragile screens, well we are all in trouble.
Agree. Surely these things have some built-in resilience. Nobody would buy them if they have to be wrapped in cottonwool.

It's going to scratch, but it's superficial. You would need to put a skin on it.
I tend to baby mine but getting more comfortable, Question where can I find that back cover you have ???
It's a leather dbrand skin
Millimeters on each corner above the screen I have little dents it's crazy lol

Currently waiting on repairs on mine, it developed a bump/dot on the left half of the inner screen, then a dead pixel lines
