Oh dear, that Scottish breakfast looked as if they have just opened up a supermarket breakfast pack and dumped it into a skillet. I love black pudding and haggis but TBH, even cheap ones taste good. As I said, it all looked to be out of a breakfast packet. The bridges, Forth Rail Bridge, Forth road bridge, and finally, The Queensferry Crossing. You were paying for the view Gary!! 😀
Love how you always look for the positives despite less than great food. (PS loved seeing the forth bridge which I abseiled off of for charity earlier this year)

This and the branch in Edinburgh used to be absolutely fantastic, the Covid pandemic and the push for outdoor dining made the place a fortune. Since then both places have let it go to there head and the prices have went through the roof and the quality has sunk. There is much better options now. They also add a service charge and get stroppy when you ask for it to be removed.
@GaryEats that usually happens when you try to break off a slice from the block straight from the freezer 😐 the amount of times it's happened to me I now wrap each slice separately before freezing
I'm glad you're in Scotland ❤. I went there once. You always give very indepth reviews of the food and the ambience and service etc. Have a lovely day Gary ❤
I was wanting you to try tattie scones, but really nicely cooked McGhee's ones 😕 Three good venues out of four isn't too bad I suppose 🏴 Great review though, thank you both once again 👍
Good evening mister G and co. I do hope you're both well and enjoying Scotland. That breakfast, to me, looked very messy!! Like it was dropped from a height into a frying pan!! What ever happened to the humble plate??? 🤔🤔 Today it all seems to be boards, slates, oversized bowls and skillets!!! Give me a plate anyday!! I think the Hash brown, egg and beans were the only edible food stuffs there, along with the toast...my opinion. Tea/coffee should ALWAYS be included in a brekky, as should the toast AND £3 for one teabag??😱😱😱 They're having a laugh aren't they???? 😳😳 It was a lot of money for not the best food. The view of the bridges kind of made it better but not much!! Hope you're managing to stay toastie warm up there. Snow in Hastings today...only just though!! Have a great evening. See you next time 😃
What the Canadian diner gave you wasn't a proper Scottish Breakfast. There are plenty of cafes and farmhouse type restaurant that serves a Full Scottish Breakfast. The ingredients used in the Canadian diner breakfast were mass produced in the factory.
Hello Gary: Based on your reactions to this meal and the individual contents, I think it would be safe to say that you probably would NOT like most of the breakfast sausage served here in the USA. What we have here is mainly mass-produced without the herbs and seasonings you are accustomed to. There is an English purveyor of the types of goods you are accustomed to located in the Chicago, Illinois area called JOLLY POSH FOODS and I and a British co-worker ordered from him. We ordered back bacon, mix for Yorkshire pudding, cippolata sausages, regular pork sausages and I think, if you lived in the USA, his products would be to your liking. Cheers, Paul Connors New Jersey, USA
Susan here That’s the last place I’d go for breakfast It looks like an industrial estate The best thing about your brekky was that view of the bridges…wow As always, thank you Gary
WHAT a gentleman you are Gary. Not a very good review. But as always, you were VERY polite . AND you remained positive throughout, hoping for something to save it. Thank you
You stayed positive even when the breakfast had many negatives. That epitomises what a gentleman you are. Great review and a fair rating. Keep up the good work.
It's great having you in Scotland reviewing our restaurants but if you want a good ( and representative! ) Scottish breakfast then go to somewhere Scottish....not a Canadian company that deals in 'International' breakfasts ' of which the Scottish breakfast is just a variety for them. That's like going to MacDonalds for a Biryani. Also, you can ask in any eatery for your beans to be served in a ramekin so that is no big deal. :)
If you are going to specialise in breakfasts you need to hit the mark and sausages are massive part of that,a breakfast should never suffer from lack of taste
Should not serve a lazy poorly cooked and rubbish quality catering sausage full stop, and that hash brown too (that looked the same as maccy d's to me!). Maybe they had the work experience guy in for the day but even so, go get some local potatoes and show him how to make some 'honest' hash browns (and not just chuck everything in a cold skillet at the end!)!
You should have stayed in Edinburgh for your breakfast Gary. Still, good reviews generally do hold weight. No one knows wether they like it if they don't try. Thanks for the review mate
As a Scottish Canadian, I was thrilled that you found this place in Edinburgh. I have to wonder what the "Canadian breakfast" would have been like. I will likely be called on this, but no one I know in Canada eats Poutine. We were in London this past April and used some of your recommendations for places to eat, and they were amazing. Thank you so much for this channel. I really enjoy it. Cheers from Alberta, Canada!
Lots of grease at the bottom of that skillet it didn't look like an appetising breakfast. Mug of tea with a bag thrown in £3 You found something positive from a negative start good for you. You need sugar you're sweet enough Gary. Great review as always just love your take on food. Thank you🎉🎉
Hi Gary, that's a Scottish breakfast I would have been tempted to complain about, but you can't complain about the breakfast looking like a crash site. The sausages looked and sounded horrible and the lorne sausage wasn't far behind. But what I really can't stand on a breakfast, is an overcooked egg. Thank you for taking one for the team and have an absolutely wonderful rest of your day and speak to you soon. Email incoming tomorrow.
I love haggis. I love it on a breakfast - and if I can get some, it's the main feature of that meal. Haggis, egg, beans, toast - I can happily go without bacon and sausage when I have haggis! It has such a unique flavour. At least the scenery, though misty, was good! Those bridges are an icon in that part of Scotland and being below them is quite an experience! It looks like your time up there has been well spent and full of variety! Hope both you and Camera-son are getting plenty of rest, so neither of you succumbs to any bugs circulating right now! And, knowing from family what the weather is currently up to - stay safe!
Gary 5 is a fair rating for a baked bean breakfast. Love the way you say the sausage was overdone, burnt more likely Lol. And its a crime not serve baked beans apart, you don't get mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy served over your fish and chips. Nice one Gary
Serving the meal in a skillet is just a stunt. In Scotland there's no excuse for not having top quality produce, it's everywhere if you want to buy it. And a restaurant should.
Hi Gary. Thanks for the review. Ordering Full Scottish breakfast at what says is a Canadian Diner is strange. I'm a Canadian born in Montreal now living past Toronto and other than having Poutine on the menu and Maple Leafs everywhere I'm not sure how this is a Canadian Diner. More of an international diner with Argentinian Skillet and Steak Salad, Mexi Skillet, New York Rueben, Tijuana and Kansas Dogs, etc. on the menu. Montreal Rueben would have been more accurate and there's really no such sandwich in Montreal as the Cheese Sandwich (Philly style). Where are the classic Canadian dishes like Montreal Smoked Meat or Peameal Bacon sandwiches. How about Tourtiere pie, Atlantic Cod or Nova Scotia lobster roll? Hopefully the next Canadian Diner you try out has more actual Canadian dishes on it.
Well, the owners probably _were_ Scottish. But my gripe with this place is that there's just wayyyy too much on the menu in the first place. Do fewer things, and do them really well. It's what all truly great restaurants do!
When you are in London give "Burger & Beyond " in Soho a go. Their Bougie Burger is well rated and as your talking about Poutine, they do Chips, Cheese Curds and and Bone Marrow Gravy. Well recommended.
I think that was a very fair review Gary , you pointed out the good things i.e black pudding , hash browns and bacon . However the presentation let it down badly and at that price I wouldn't have been happy. Beans should be in a separate container IMO. Hopefully they take on board your suggestions as you are a well respected reviewer. Thanks Gary 😊
Hi Gary, I admire your approach to reviewing, even when not a good experience. I left a review recently on a well-known website that I bitterly regret. I was honest, but I was unkind. That is your strength, kindness, and you're a better person than me for it
I’m currently on day 5 of a bad case of flu, so I’m living vicariously through you here Gary. Although the sausages make me think that I’m not missing that much 😂. Good video, as always!
Oh that's a shame. That's the one at Port Edgar. It wasn't bad when I was there. It wasn't amazing, but it was okay. If you're still in the area, try the following two places for breakfast: 1. Butternut Squash, in Bath Street, Portobello. 2. for the way home, Rochester Relish on the A68, ten miles after the border.

Just been up to the Isle of Skye. Absolutely stunning. Get over there, Gary! (Can’t recommend anything to eat because they can’t be arsed opening anything past August). The Coop in Kyle of Lockalsh stays open until 10pm which was a godsend tbh.
As a "European🙂" the breakfast looked more interesting than tempting? I repeat what I said before, maybe also explore stuff in the future, show more of your travel.., you are a sharp observer with loads of likeability, cheers Anders🇸🇪
Hi Gary chap, Oh dear, when your breakfast came to your table my reaction was “Bloody Mess” I feel your tea should been included Gary. Nice review as always…Nice haircut by the way lol 👍👍
I was surprised at this "Canadian breakfast" for the simple reason I've never been to a restaurant anywhere in Canada where they serve Haggis or Black Pudding. It would have been nice had the skillet been sizzling and the beans served in a separate dish. Keep up the terrific videos Gary and cheers from Ottawa, Canada. 👍
If I want a good Scottish Breakfast, I'd make it myself. That way I can choose where I get my starring parts. Good potato Scones are essential as are your sausages, especially Lorne (go for steak Lorne if you can). Black pudding can be really dry and not very tasty - choose a good local butcher's own, or some Stornoway. Bacon - ideally Ayrshire middle if you can get it, otherwise some good Scottish Back Bacon - unsmoked for me, but some will prefer the smoked version. Don't forget the eggs. As a veteran Scottish Breakfast eater from the early 60's on, baked beans and mushrooms were never there. I love them both, but they spoil a breakfast for me. As for the hash brown? What's that doing there. One ingredient I have always had, and found in some hotels in Scotland as well, is plum tomatoes. This makes it for me, but like with the alien beans, make a barrier from the egg(s).
When it comed to a fried breakfast, i'm weird in a number of ways. To start with i'd only have it later in the day. Then because my ingredient choice is fussy it'd have to be homemade. I have sausages cooked in the oven, streaky bacon fried to the point it snaps, a tin of tomatoes heated up, adding pepper and occasionally with basil, and bread fried in my bacon fat. Then of course i season all four items with salt.
dear oh dear... The best breakfast I had in Edinburgh was in a tiny cafe, right on the Royal Mile, Cafe Edinburgh. Despite being in a prime tourist trap zone, it was really good. Beans in a pot too!
You're great as always Gary, but a proper Scottish breakfast derives from quality ingredients. Macsween haggis, Stornoway black pudding, Ayrshire bacon and there's a great number of award winning butchers who make square sausage. I'd be disappointed too with that skillet, but hey you got to try these things. You might find a gem! 😊
You're just over the water from me there. So many good places here in E Scotland where hearty breakfast is served. TY once again for your excellent review.
Hi Gary! I couldn't help but compare this immediately to your stunning breakfast at Cafe Paolo... As soon as the frying pan appeared. I can honestly say that I would prepare a much better hot breakfast at home myself & I'm no chef! Haha. 😊 Thankfully, the black pudding saved the day a little, along with the bacon. I'm sorry the breakfast was a bit of a let-down, but as always, you gave an honest + quality review. I hope you & Mr C are doing really well & I'm looking forward to taking a proper look at your website over the weekend. I'm keen to buy the cap, for when I'm out for a walk. I will look forward to the next one Gary. Take care. 💙💐💙

Hope you're enjoying the trip Gary. Agree with the presentation comment. Seemed a tad messy , the beans being the culprit also having the toast dropped on top along with the butter portions ! A deep skillet, 'in my opinion' not really suitable, a bit like ordering soup and it comes on a flat dinner plate. Some really good items and some not so good. A pot for the beans, plate for the toast and a shallower skillet or plate. Just needs a small rethink. Find a butcher and get him/her to make the sausages. Excellent and honest review Gary. Presentation (free) and quality (a small cost but passed on to the customer) my opinions.

8:26 In the background you can hear an adult man reacting to having to pay the bill for this slop.
That is absolutely hilarious lol
🤣
I listened three times before I realised! 😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Greeeeat to see you again!!
It's always great to ese you!
We Canadians do love our Moose. By the title of the video I'm assuming the food was just average. No matter, looking forward to watching the review. Hope everyone is enjoying the day.
Bino you are always very kind and I hope you are doing well!
I always like to guess what score you're going to give the meals, and these days I'm almost always spot on. Your honest comments on the food is what makes your videos' so special for us all. Keep on giving it a go, Gary. 👍👍
Awesome! Thank you!
£16 for that mess is a disgrace
Hopefully a bad day at the office
Oh dear, that Scottish breakfast looked as if they have just opened up a supermarket breakfast pack and dumped it into a skillet. I love black pudding and haggis but TBH, even cheap ones taste good. As I said, it all looked to be out of a breakfast packet. The bridges, Forth Rail Bridge, Forth road bridge, and finally, The Queensferry Crossing. You were paying for the view Gary!! 😀
200k by Christmas for sure, well done to you Gary x
That would be amazing Harry and thank you x
Love how you always look for the positives despite less than great food. (PS loved seeing the forth bridge which I abseiled off of for charity earlier this year)
I'm loving these Scottish venues our lovely Gary, beautiful scenery.
My favourite is still The Star Bar but I'm loving what you're sharing with us .
I love your honesty, always have.
The presentation was a bit slap dash some of it was ok and some saved the day.
I still love your reviews whether it's a good one or not so good.... thank you for a brilliant video.
Thank you and your Son for sharing with us....have a lovely evening and stay warm sweet x 😊
Thank you Maria. I spoke to the owners of Star Bar today. What lovely lovely people! Thank you x
@GaryEats awww bless you. That's so lovely to hear that you had a lovely chat with them.
That will mean the world to them. You're a real decent gentleman.
May everything good come upon you . Have a lovely evening sweet x 😊
Please don’t assume that all Full Scottish Breakfasts are like this! Bravo for getting through it.
Thank you and understand Alistair
Another honest review Gary. Admire your integrity.
Thank you my friend
The slice looks like someone already had a cheeky wee bite out the end🤣
It looked that way but it wasn’t me 😂
@GaryEats that usually happens when you try to break off a slice from the block straight from the freezer 😐 the amount of times it's happened to me I now wrap each slice separately before freezing
I'm glad you're in Scotland ❤. I went there once. You always give very indepth reviews of the food and the ambience and service etc. Have a lovely day Gary ❤
Around 14:45 I'm sure i saw Richard Hannay running away from the train.
😂😂👍🏴
Tourist trap
I was wanting you to try tattie scones, but really nicely cooked McGhee's ones 😕
Three good venues out of four isn't too bad I suppose 🏴
Great review though, thank you both once again 👍
It was a lot of money for not the best food.
The view of the bridges kind of made it better but not much!!
Hope you're managing to stay toastie warm up there.
Snow in Hastings today...only just though!!
Have a great evening.
See you next time 😃
Loved it but sadly home now Heather. Have two more videos to come which I'm delighted to show you. Take care x
you too mister G.
Gary love your channel. You always put a smile on my face. I wish you nothing but the best and will continue to support your channel!
Thanks so much Kaz 👍🏼
What the Canadian diner gave you wasn't a proper Scottish Breakfast. There are plenty of cafes and farmhouse type restaurant that serves a Full Scottish Breakfast. The ingredients used in the Canadian diner breakfast were mass produced in the factory.
I understand your point but it has excellent reviews
Cheers,
Paul Connors
New Jersey, USA
Arbroath Smokies, Loch Fyne kippers, and Finnan Haddie make good breakfasts.
Absolutely fantastic
Susan here
That’s the last place I’d go for breakfast
It looks like an industrial estate
The best thing about your brekky was that view of the bridges…wow
As always, thank you Gary
I understand Susan but it has brilliant reviews
I just love your reviews keep them coming brilliant ❤
Thank you a fantastic one coming Sunday ❤️
Hello from Canada Gary! I'm sorry my fellow Canadians disappointed you. Maybe someday you'll make your way to Canada to review some great food.
Please do not apologise, I'm not sure if anyone working there was Canadian!
I second that. I'm a Canadian on the West Coast.
Honestly, any place that serves food in a frying pan does not deserve to exist!
All the best.
Check Paolo's recently, the best breakfast I've ever had
WHAT a gentleman you are Gary. Not a very good review. But as always, you were VERY polite . AND you remained positive throughout, hoping for something to save it. Thank you
Thanks so much!! Take care Lynn
You stayed positive even when the breakfast had many negatives. That epitomises what a gentleman you are. Great review and a fair rating. Keep up the good work.
Happy Thursday
Have a nice evening Paul bit chilly!!
@@GaryEatsIt sure is. The heating is fighting the cold.
You are right Sharon, maybe not the best choice
😂😂😂the Triffids are watching you Gary waiting for any left overs to Gobble up 😂😂❤❤❤
😁
@ 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is one Canadian who never misses an episode of yours. I'm sorry the breakfast wasn't up to par.
If you are going to specialise in breakfasts you need to hit the mark and sausages are massive part of that,a breakfast should never suffer from lack of taste
Agreed entirely!
Why were the plates missing?
Lol!
No one in Canada eats Poutine??
🤔
@alanledzep1967 some people do, but it isn't as widely eaten as people think.
Yes it wasn't the best Frank, it was mostly the presentation which ruined the breakfast!
Yes I couldn't give it anymore sadly Michael
Serving the meal in a skillet is just a stunt. In Scotland there's no excuse for not having top quality produce, it's everywhere if you want to buy it. And a restaurant should.
I agree with you entirely
I will definitely be trying a Canadian diner next year 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I thought the same… virtually nothing Canadian on the menu. Very strange.
@@JonB1995 Half the menu was Poutine🤷🏼♀️
A small section of the menu was Poutine, a single Canadian fast food item. Most of the remaining space is generic American bar food
When you are in London give "Burger & Beyond " in Soho a go. Their Bougie Burger is well rated and as your talking about Poutine, they do Chips, Cheese Curds and and Bone Marrow Gravy. Well recommended.
I will do Harry!
Buckfast, Irn Bru and a deep fried haggis, THAT'S a full Scottish breakfast.
😂😂😂😂
I wish we had Irn Bru in the U.S...I had it in Scotland and I love it😊
Lol very funny
That's the rules
What no whisky sauce with it tadger ? 🫢
Another great watch thanks Gary and what a backdrop.
Delightful review Gary always look forward to the days when you have a video out. Have a good weekend.
Thank you, you always have to be fair!
You want to head down to Newcastle if you want a decent Fry up.Half the price and double the size. YEP 🤓🤓
Hi Gary, I admire your approach to reviewing, even when not a good experience. I left a review recently on a well-known website that I bitterly regret. I was honest, but I was unkind. That is your strength, kindness, and you're a better person than me for it
Oooh I never got my notification from my favourite TH-cam channel.
Still in Bonnie Scotland 🏴👍 you missed the snow thankfully.
I’m currently on day 5 of a bad case of flu, so I’m living vicariously through you here Gary. Although the sausages make me think that I’m not missing that much 😂. Good video, as always!
Thank you very much and I hope you feel better soon!
Down The Hatch do amazing poutine. Definitely the best thing they do.
Tattie Scone or Potato Farls/bread as they call it in an Ulster Fry is an absolute must, perfect with beans and some bacon.
I really need to have an Ulster Fry soon
Gary needs to get to Belfast for a proper Ulster Fry
I love mopping up the egg yolk with them.
Oh that's a shame. That's the one at Port Edgar. It wasn't bad when I was there. It wasn't amazing, but it was okay.
If you're still in the area, try the following two places for breakfast:
1. Butternut Squash, in Bath Street, Portobello.
2. for the way home, Rochester Relish on the A68, ten miles after the border.
Onwards and upwards, can't win them all!
Love how Gary takes his time listening to his taste buds before commenting,,😅great review.
Thank you very much Robert
Honest review as always....enjoy yer travels......life good I bet! 🙃
I loved my trip in Scotland
Hello Gary ❤
You don't need sugar, you're sweet enough
The food looked disgusting,I agree put the beans in a small bowl by themselves
Hope you have a safe, healthy and blessed day 🦋🦋
Jenny ❤
Just been up to the Isle of Skye. Absolutely stunning. Get over there, Gary! (Can’t recommend anything to eat because they can’t be arsed opening anything past August). The Coop in Kyle of Lockalsh stays open until 10pm which was a godsend tbh.
As a "European🙂" the breakfast looked more interesting than tempting? I repeat what I said before, maybe also explore stuff in the future, show more of your travel.., you are a sharp observer with loads of likeability, cheers Anders🇸🇪
Thank you Anders
Hi Gary chap, Oh dear, when your breakfast came to your table my reaction was “Bloody Mess” I feel your tea should been included Gary. Nice review as always…Nice haircut by the way lol 👍👍
Thank you David, it wasn’t the best offering or presentation 👍👍
I used to work in Rosyth and never knew this place existed. Probably didnt miss much 😅 great review as always Gaz! 👍
Thank you very much
I was surprised at this "Canadian breakfast" for the simple reason I've never been to a restaurant anywhere in Canada where they serve Haggis or Black Pudding.
That’s great to hear Jon
dear oh dear... The best breakfast I had in Edinburgh was in a tiny cafe, right on the Royal Mile, Cafe Edinburgh. Despite being in a prime tourist trap zone, it was really good. Beans in a pot too!
That’s great to hear 🏴🏴
Another great Video Gary 👍👍 However any more sloppy offerings like that skillet they’ll soon be has - beans !!! 😂😂
Thank you and it was a bit sloppy Tony
You're great as always Gary, but a proper Scottish breakfast derives from quality ingredients. Macsween haggis, Stornoway black pudding, Ayrshire bacon and there's a great number of award winning butchers who make square sausage. I'd be disappointed too with that skillet, but hey you got to try these things. You might find a gem! 😊
It was a bit of a digs breakfast some good some not so good ingredients Stefan
You're just over the water from me there. So many good places here in E Scotland where hearty breakfast is served. TY once again for your excellent review.
Thanks so much Sean
Hi Gary! I couldn't help but compare this immediately to your stunning breakfast at Cafe Paolo... As soon as the frying pan appeared.
I can honestly say that I would prepare a much better hot breakfast at home myself & I'm no chef! Haha. 😊
Thankfully, the black pudding saved the day a little, along with the bacon.
Take care. 💙💐💙
Unfortunately, I think most breakfasts that get compared to Paolo's are going to fall short sadly Erin.
Thank you so much for your lovely and wonderful comment as always and that's brilliant. Thank you always for supporting the channel!
@@GaryEatsI totally agree Gary.
The question may really be... Is there a breakfast in existence which tops Cafe Paolo?!
And, my pleasure Gary. Always. 💙
Sounds like Down The Hatch belongs Down in the Dumps, Real Canadian Resto's are much better owner probably has no roots in Canada he/she should know better.
I was a bit worried for you to start with when the place was empty ! It didn’t look appetising at all and clearly tasted the same. Your 5/10 was about right. Cheers Gary 👍
as soon as that was served I could just tell it would be disappointing, I think Back Bacon should always be served with a full brekkie too
Good video honestly good review you are always open and honest your food reviews you always my first point of call keep up the great work
Thank you Gary top man
Great review Gary. Always balanced. Keep up the good work.
Gary, I get these around 8:00am here in NZ... usually makes me want a full fry up or poached Sole in beurre blanc at the wrong time of day, if there is such a thing.. love the content...
Thank you Charles 🇳🇿
Agree, the skillet should be sizzling, or they might as well just put it on a plate. Nice tropical plants in the background, though 🌴🌴
Yep agreed, seemed a bit gimmicky in the end !
Thank you very much Paul it’s not the best presentation
