I am doing some serious tyre-kicking of watches at the moment. I have whittled it down to an Rolex Oyster Perpetual or the new Omega Speedmaster ‘Moonwatch’. I have watched about a dozen online reviews of the Omega. There’s a really, really detailed review by an Austrian dude who really knows his watches. The rest of the reviews - no disrespect intended - are weak. I shuddered when I see ‘reviews’ consisting largely of ego-stroking face-to-face time with Big Shots from Omega HQ. You gotta have concerns about the objectivity of such reviews. Another concern I would have is about whether or not these ‘reviewers’ are actually buying the Omegas with their own cash? I accidentally stumbled across this review and - to my shame - I was just about to change channel (I was puzzled by the video being shot in an alpine pasture), until I heard that the reviewer had actually bought the Omega in his hand. Respect! Very honest and personal review. Upon finishing the review, I subscribed to the channel. Similar to your advice on having one example of both the Hesalite and the Sapphire Omegas, I know that I will only be content when I have bought both the Rolex and the Omega. Great review, sir. My compliments. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for the content and the effort and honest viewpoint, i too went and got the watch because i had to find out. and it was making me crazy the comments about razor blades.
Very nice review - I own the 1861 hesalite and I like it better than the new Speedmaster (but hey that is just personal :-) ) I am always in the water with my 1861. If a 5000 euro Omega cannot handle a ittle water it is not worth the name Omega. But do not dive with a speedy. I had contact with an Omega spokesman and he guarateed that swimming and showering waas just fine, the only thing you have to do is service the watch in about 5 year. Omega would never spoil their reputation with a leak watch. So service once and a while and enjoy the watch on land and in water.
I got me new moonwatch for $3,855 from the US Military Exchange...nylon strap and hesalite. I couldn't pass up the deal. My first omega speedmaster. So excited to get home and wear this iconic watch.
So what do you think about the bracelet aside from the looks? The more I have checked it out it seems like the bracelet is a bit on the light side. Is it hollow links or what? Looks good to me but almost seems cheap because of how light it is.
@@scott7841 yeah I have checked them out a few different times trying to decide on purchasing it and though the bracelet is much more attractive than it’s predecessor it does seem a bit flimsy.
I guess it's made out of different steel alloy, kinda like rolex with their steel bracelet. I guess it's an update as well as the old bracelet kinda have problems with rusty links due to contact with really sweaty users.
Went to the watch boutique and compared the 1861 vs the new 3861. I walked out with the 1861. To me the bracelet for the 3861 is way to flimsy and delicate. IMHO it leans towards a woman's bracelet...style wise. Also I prefer the case and dial on the 1861. So it comes down to movements. Sure the 3861 movement is an upgrade but the 1861 is basically a 861 movement and both have been to space and are solid. So I decided to save $2k and buy the 1861. Just my 2 cents.... Cheers!
The reason you shouldn't shower with you watch (personal preference but also recommended not to do so) is so the expansion and contraction of the gaskets due to heat and cooling of temperature can compromise the overall seal and potentially let in moisture. When watches are tested for water resistance it is rare that includes any sort of temperature gauging and as such that isn't something necessarily accounted for in the WR rating. I say this humbly as someone who had his luminox navy seal "dive" watch fill with steam in the shower some years back. xD
I imagine they will be finishing the edges off more since the TWC review. Why wouldn't you correct an issue in response to such honest feedback? Nice review though, subscribed.
Two small things I don’t like about the 3861 speedy is the big omega font they used and second the chronograph pushers are shorter than the 1861. Other than that it’s perfect.
Just tried one on yesterday. To me the edge is sharp and as was the bracelet. Wasn’t enough for me to pass on it. But definitely felt it...just trying to decide if i want this or a seamaster for my first omega.
From a owner of a seamster 300m blue, get the moonwatch without any doubt !!! The bracelet of the seamaster is a pain in the a**e, the clasp is was to thick and it feel uncomfortable, I tried the 3861 and 1861 these days and I decided to get the 3861 sapphire version
I never realized how sharp the edges are, but you'll only notice it if you run your finger along the edge (which normally you'd never do), otherwise it's unnoticeable on wrist.
Hey James - I just picked up a Speedmaster 105.012 reference 321 movement. It is a true beautiful well loved, well cared for piece of art. Beautiful case, crown, bezel, dot of 90, dial, creamy amazing markers. I’m so lucky to have been bestowed as a steward of this timepiece. Truly amazing. I love the horse on the back with no Omega Flight Qualified print - just - Speedmaster, and original bracelet too. This is Hodinikee grade; It is a piece of art no doubt. Thanks for sharing your review; keep up the great work.
James, a spot one video, you say it as you see it. That's what makes this a great video. If I was in the market for a new watch the 3861 could well end up on my list. Good to hear your real world views on the sharp edges that is allegedly is a huge issue with the Seamaster 300M as well, odd as I have no issues with a 2020 model.
Has anyone else ever thought that the dial on the Speedmaster is difficult to read? I have a fairly new speedmaster and I've hardly worn it over the last 5 years. I think that's because it's a chore to read and it's frustrating. Lack of contrast in hand thickness to dial markings, a busy dial, and tachymeter that serves no purpose but just adds to the confusion. I've developed the opinion that I don't really think this is an awesome watch anymore, it's useless to me almost, and people just own it because they think they need to?
Interesting to read your comments but still have an itch I need to scratch! If you’re in the Uk maybe you would consider selling? Till I’ve owned one I won’t be able to get it out of my head 🤦🏻♂️
@@philnelson2607 In Canada! Personally, I choose my explorer over the Speedmaster every time. That wasn't my original intent either, it just doesn't really help me tell the time TBH. :(
A shower.... Is the equivalent to swimming at 200m because of the pressure of the water against the seals. And if you bend your wrist and accidently push a pusher.... You're watch will be cattle trucked. Even tested at 50m it's not advised to do washing up etc.
Does anyone have any comment on the ease of winding of the 3861? I have a Speedmaster Reduced, which I love, but the winder is quite difficult to use (small and hard to turn compared to some). Does this apply to this Speedy which is, of course, manual-wind?
I have an 1861 and recently bought this one. I like everything but the bracelet. The jury is still out for me on the bracelet. It is a bit dainty but may grow on me.
A real life review by a real owner! I own the same watch in the sapphire version and I couldn’t agree more on everything he pointed out about this watch, especially on the edge sharpness. Just a few more things. - The watch feels lighter than it looks thanks to the new tapered bracelet. - It has only one more micro adjustment, compared to typical two, but the links are relatively smaller than other watches’ so the fitting hasn’t been a problem for me. - The winding experience is a lot better than I expected. I rarely hear people complaining about the crown on my Navitimer. Good thing it’s an automatic piece or I would’ve lost my fingerprints over the years LOL.
You can’t shower with it. The warm water vapor penetrates the pushers and crown Have seen you seen bathroom mirror after a hot shower ? You think your watch is different ? Vapor molecules are thousands times smaller than water.
I bought the Ed White Cal 321.... it's the only Omega I own, and the one of the only ones I'd want to. If I wanted the best movement.. I'd get a Lange or even a Daytona .. The whole reason to own a Speedmaster is the history and that beautiful Lemania designed movement... and the vintage case and bracelet is also much nicer in the new modern manufacturing style.
Pls don't put Lange and Daytona in the same sentence when talking about best movement. They're in very different leagues.ALS movements are haute horologie... Rolex are mass produced by machines. Where Rolex wins over ALS is publicity marketing. Regards.
Nice Review, well I had it on my wrist in the Boutique, clasp is small and no pusher microadjustment- why? Do you think going swimming with the 1863 is more dangerous ? Because it has no Metas ?? Thanks
Great watch James. I think I’m going to stick with my 1861 simply because I prefer it on strap . I might look at purchasing the new black strap though if it available separately.
When you check the bezel of the watch. This new one has the dot "above" the number 90. On the old one the dot was on the right side of the 90 and not "above"
What if it is my first speedy? Should i go for 3861 for hesalite? Or 1831? Tricky thing is my ad told me there is a undiscounted sapphire is ready for in a day or so
I'm in the same boat. Plus it will be my first mechanical chronograph. My experience with Co-Axial movements, is that they seem to hold up incredibly well in all conditions. So I am seriously leaning towards the 3861
Excellent real world review.. Pre-owned is still the way to go when purchasing an Omega. While it’s true that every collection needs a Speedy. I’m just not convinced that this is the best Speedy to own.
I think it depends if you’re a movement advancement guy or if you’re a history guy. Personally it would bother me to have the 1861 and not be COSC certified. I think the new model is perfect just too expensive.
Had my 3861 since Christmas. Have been sent to Swiss for chronograph regulation, twice. Still not running smoothly. Never buying Omega again. Already sold my other Speedy and this one is going too.
Nice review. With regards to water resistance on a watch - always divide it by 3 to be careful. General water tests are on a non moving watch head which is submerged at X metres of depth. If you move at that particular depth, you instantly increase the pressure by a factor of 1.5-2.
First 1861 big box, then 861, then 1967-8 321, then 3861 and then one of the versions in sapphire, also one with brownish dial..That is how your collection should look like.🙂
Not every person is going to understand you and that is Okej. They have a right to their opinion and you have every right to ignore it, opinions are like nose, everybody got one but it usually has a couple of holes in it. :)
Great review! Thanks for helping me justify having a 57 Reissue, 1861 Hesalite and a 3861 one day. I so like the idea of going sapphire sandwich with the 3861.
I am looking at getting an Omega Speedmaster Professional and was leaning towards the sapphire model. My friend said I would regret not getting the hesalite model in the future if I get more interested in collecting and he claimed the hesalite was the better watch. Im not sure if that's just him being bias because he is a collector and might be loyal to the watches history but as someone who likes to see the movement and is going to wear the watch a lot I feel like the sapphire model would be better for everyday wear and tear. Could anyone clarify is one model better than the other and also is my friend just being bias towards the hesalite model due to its historical accuracy. Thanks in advance
I've been going back and forth between the hesalite and sapphire version, but ended up buying the sapphire. I was sold by the look of the hesalite - and was at some point contemplating on exchanging the sapphire for the hesalite after my purchase - but the sapphire really grew on me (also aesthetically). I looked at 100 videos on how to polish hesalite glass to convince myself I could live with the idea of having such an expensive watch that is relatively easy to watch. However, now owning the watch for 1 month, I would go crazy if I would scratch it already..it just wouldn't work for me, I would rather have some piece of mind as I wear it everyday. Furthermore, the display case is beautiful and the polished bracelet gives it a bit more definition in my opinion..But the choice is hard..If there was a domed sapphire version, it would make the life of many consumers a bit easier ;-)
@@Bartseli I ended up getting offered the Rolex DateJust from the boutique near me so I bought that. Will definetly get a speed master in future though
@@Mark..P well done you. My AD said no discount as it’s new. I have handled it and edges are sharp, not that it felt uncomfortable on the wrist. Whilst it may not be an issue they should have rounded slightly IMO. What’s your impression wearing daily? I’m still pondering. Thanks
I'm not sure that I like the changes to it, especially the bracelet but like anything that is changed and made newer it will take some getting used to and maybe I'll like it better than the old.
This new 2021 c3861 Speedmaster Professional released on 5th Jan 2021 has a long waiting list as at 28 Feb 2021 in Singapore. Having owned a Sapphire since Jan 2021, this piece is definitely the best modern moonwatch that is worth every dollar even with the price increase. Some grey market dealers are asking slightly more than 10% above retail. Did you mention longer service interval on this new movement?
Yeah... Metas certified watches have longer service interval as its coaxial escapement has no need much lubrication, it only act as a bumper, but not for lessening the friction unlike the most of swiss lever escapement that widely used in modern watch.
Absolutely love this watch my friend if I didn't have my Breitling Navitimer I would have definitely pick this up also love the location such a great idea keep up the awesome word kind regards Mr GMT
Mate, great video! I have just got a 1861 - I guess it is one of the last of the old model. Sapphire sandwich, gorgeous box as you know - has WL. Date 09/20. Do you think that will go up in value?? I’m thinking to keep it boxed and maybe get the 3861 to wear!?!?! Or I could just wear the 1861?? Have big wrists so not worried about the bracelet... what are your thoughts????
Don't ever think that your warranty covers anything water relater. You'll never get the manufacturer to cover water damage. It's always due to abuse or mishandling. Expect them to reply back with a big repair invoice. If it's salt water then kiss your watch goodbye.
I am looking into the sapphire version! I dont think there is any other chrono at this price range besides the speedmaster. If there are please leave a comment and let me know because I am starting a watch collection and want a chrono as part of it. I think the speedmaster is a little plain for me so its not something I would get as my first piece. In fact I have a Grand Seiko on order as my first piece!
Yes it’s vintage inspired but it has hot spots on it and that’s a fact ! I bought this very same watch and the bracelet is not comfortable at all it scrapes your hand when you put it on, the bracelet is the problem i went back to the AD and the salesman agreed with me also mine was running slow which should not be happening. It has been sent back to omega to find the issue, I told the guy I won’t be having the watch back and I want a replacement or a refund when they fix the problem as I am not paying £5300 for a watch omega say won’t run slow and I only owned for 5 days before having a problem because obviously it was sold to me with a problem, don’t get me wrong I love the speedmaster professional and just want one that’s working correctly. I have Rolex and Tudor and the bracelets are far superior to this one.
Micro adjustment only available with their dive watch I think. Thus why they got two couple holes in the clasp that you could readjust with a tooth pick.
It's not designed for water, so I won't swim with it as it's not the best thing to do. Well I guess you can do whatever but why not wear a G-shock for water?
Congratulations again! Speedy is only my Omega and will be. So you have Apollo50th and professional which both made of 3861 movement. Will you still get Snoopy which make you have 3rd watch with the same movement but different outside?
Only just found your channel; enjoyed this video and have subscribed! Question: are you still enjoying the 3861? I'm planning to purchase (will be my first Omega) so am interested in your ownership experience. They're difficult to get at retail here in Singapore, so I'm researching availability in the UK (I'm back for Xmas); are they available? Cheers, Rich
Nice thoughts on the newer MW, I have the older Sapphire Sandwich got a good price from an AD and happy with it. If and WHEN I get another speedy, I'd probably go for one of their sports auto's, probably with a white dial.
Yes I noticed the dial color in direct sunlight. The 1861 is more of a matte dark grey. The 3861 is a flat black dial. It's difficult to see the step dial at first. There really isn't much of a big difference between the 1861 vs 3861. Still both winners IMO. I am going to buy the 3861 brushed bracelet for my 1861. I love the matte grey tone in sunlight. It makes it stand out. The only con on the 1861, no hacking & no COSC. Other than that OMEGA did right by this new 3861. This is very encouraging and gives us fans some assurance these 3861 are the next option for Speedy owners, and these 3861 are here to stay for a long time. Great review James bravo sir.
It shows you that when one person says something hundreds of others will blindly repeat it. 🐑
I saw this watch in person yesterday; and was thinking the same thing. It is "so" lightweight that I wondered if it has hollow links?
Cheers!
@@MT-kx2uc I didn't make a mistake. Plus it was cheaper because it was a holiday sale.
I say this humbly as someone who had his luminox navy seal "dive" watch fill with steam in the shower some years back. xD
I don't see the reason to shower with a watch on, I even take my G shock off to shower after a days hard work.
Showcase, another great review. I have said it many times before, it's the best Chrono on the market for the money.
I own a 1996 861 and I'm definitely buying the the new hesalite 3861.
Don’t wear your watch in the shower hot tub or sauna it wrecks the seals.
depends what watch but there’s some risk
@Johhny Johnstone is yours the new one Johhny, or older model?
@@perardua1861 totally agree 👍 it makes no sense
Still,, it shouldn't have that edge. As a hobbyist machinist, you don't leave edges like that. On anything.
I agree, if it had nice smooth edges there would be nothing to debate. We could just be discussing it`s strong points which are many.
I'm wearing a 3861 right now and I agree with you. It shouldn't have that aggressive of an edge.
May i recomend you the xiaomi electric nose hair trimmer?
Good review and observations on that watch, which pretty much mirror my own observations.
Great review but I'll never understand taking a shower with a watch on
I only go with my apple watch
Yea steam is no bueno
How do you time the 2 minutes necessary for the conditioner to remain in your hair?
I never realized how sharp the edges are, but you'll only notice it if you run your finger along the edge (which normally you'd never do), otherwise it's unnoticeable on wrist.
Thanks for the review! Can’t wait to pick up my own sapphire sandwich!
i am a comletely Rolex addicted, however this is the first omega I desire! nice arguments my watch friend
A different style of review and utterly enjoyed every minute. Well done sir.
Does anyone have any comment on the ease of winding of the 3861? I have a Speedmaster Reduced, which I love, but the winder is quite difficult to use (small and hard to turn compared to some). Does this apply to this Speedy which is, of course, manual-wind?
Hi William, have you considered purchasing a winding tool / stem?
@@marcomarziani9716 Many thanks, Mr Marziani - this had completely escaped me; I'll look into it right away.
I have an 1861 and recently bought this one. I like everything but the bracelet. The jury is still out for me on the bracelet. It is a bit dainty but may grow on me.
Another greAt video James. Congrats my friend on the beautiful new Speedy!
Great video. You mentioned checking the seals once a year. How do you get the seals checked? Can you describe that process?
Regards.
Anyone have experience with the Uncle Seiko 1479 compared to this new bracelet?
Nice Review, well I had it on my wrist in the Boutique, clasp is small and no pusher microadjustment- why? Do you think going swimming with the 1863 is more dangerous ? Because it has no Metas ?? Thanks
For me i ll choice the 1861 .... she ' s like the 321 and 821 ...in the moon...not the coaxial.....
Great watch James. I think I’m going to stick with my 1861 simply because I prefer it on strap . I might look at purchasing the new black strap though if it available separately.
What does the “dot” over 90 mean? Ive heard several reviews mention this.
When you check the bezel of the watch. This new one has the dot "above" the number 90. On the old one the dot was on the right side of the 90 and not "above"
@@nielsmensink509 But why a dot at 90 in the first place?
Just found your channel. Thanks for the video. What do you think of the new 321 Ed White?
Does the new version bracelet fit the 1861? Great vid

2 years is my guess
Is that Bigfoot I can see in the background?: nicely paced review!
First 1861 big box, then 861, then 1967-8 321, then 3861 and then one of the versions in sapphire, also one with brownish dial..That is how your collection should look like.🙂
What do u think about ed white speedy, that new(old) caliber 321
Not every person is going to understand you and that is Okej. They have a right to their opinion and you have every right to ignore it, opinions are like nose, everybody got one but it usually has a couple of holes in it. :)
I have the watch simple words beauty , quality and functionality

Hi James.
In the UK, which ADs do you think are likely to offer the best discount on this (even if waiting 6 months) and which the worst?
Cheers
Tough question hes cashed up and just buys
@@jarrodlee1506 Berrys are offering 10% on line - you just need to ask

Best and most enjoyable down to earth information. Thank you
Absolutely love this watch my friend if I didn't have my Breitling Navitimer I would have definitely pick this up also love the location such a great idea keep up the awesome word kind regards Mr GMT
Great review. Immediately subscribed.
Excellent video James.

Hi mate, you’ll pick one up in the UK easily. Do they go for above retail in Singapore?
They're all sold out in many parts of the world. Long waiting lines at zero discounts.
Great review but I would never shower with a 50m watch! Why take the risk?
Here we go 🙄
Here we go?
Neither would I, John.
I am looking for an Explorer 39mm. If I can get one I want to bring my collection back down to 2 pieces Speedy & Explorer. Then focus on a Panerai 372, JLC Reverso duo face medium & in some years from now. My grail a JLC Ultra thin perpetual Dr. Strange or a Reserve De Marche for the time being....
Or you can buy the sapphire version of 3861 and replace it’s crystal with hesalite.
