- What difference does the room make when recording drums? Let’s find out. We have a bunch of different room configurations here and i thought it could be useful for both you and me to have a reference point on how they sound.

I liked the second room with the glass doors closed, to me ir sounded bigger and more present in the middle range, more upfront and that is always great for drums, and that last room was awesome as well, great natural reverb sound

Excellent video! On their own, the drums sounded best in the large room (location #1), but in the context of such heavy guitars and bass, the medium room with the glass walls (#3) felt more appropriate. The drums had a more aggressive sound in that scenario. Again, extremely well done video!

Pretty crazy how much the snare changed when using the close mics in the stone room. Sounds like a completely new drum!
I love that reflective glass room. Makes the kick very bohnam esc. Super fat. Blind test I would’ve thought that was a much larger room.
Even if I could hear some weird reflections in the stone room, it sounded decent in a mix. Brought me some comfort that I could record decent stuff in the rooms I have available.. Haha. Thanks for the super informative video.
Awesome video, even 5 years later! I was surprised that I consistently liked the drums best in the room with glass partition walls, and I preferred the sound with the walls... engaged? Not sure what the word would be.

Never been a fan of overly large/reflective drum rooms: the cymbals tend to overwhelm everything, that is unless the drummer knows how to self mix, which not many do… it is a unique skill that a lot of drummers don’t pay attention to.
Which is why I preferred the 2nd room in this demo; the cymbals sat in with the rest of the kit.

Love this! Everywhere I go I’m always thinking, “hmm I wonder what my drums would sound like in here” haha those drums sounded soooo good in the reflective room and the room with the plate verb in it!

I'm a little jelly you have 5 different rooms to record drums in! The hard part was I couldn't really pick a favorite. But I'm glad you did this because it shows how much difference the acoustic can have. I personally am recording in a lot of small untreated rooms. The ride cymbal was a little harsh in the EMT room. This reminds me of why I bought special high hats and a darker ride to "tame" my cymbal sounds. If I had a bigger room I would probably choose different cymbals. And maybe snare tuning as well like you said.
I'm surprised by how every room works pretty well with guitar and bass in context.
I've got the same issues , recording in a small room and I used to have very bright cymbals (lots of Paiste 2002) and i've now changed for darker cymbals ass well, works great to avoid bleeding in close mics and to avoid drastic eq cuts (2k,6k,10k especially) on overheads. In small rooms i like to put a mic outside the room to get more space and breath and one far away from the kit, pointing a wall (without acoustic panel to get more "harsh", with acoustic panels to get more body)
I am planning on a build out in a home, and was really bummed out when I realized how small my drum/vocal room was going to be. Your small amp room is actually about the same size, and I liked it best for just raw kit sound! Now I am excited for the build!

Unbelievable video! The Glass room sounds amazing. Big and boomy like 1176-all-button-in. New Impulse for experimenting with hard surfaces like glass, wood, concrete etc... really nice work

I love big rooms on drums, but in the final mix, I liked 2nd room.

I like the sound of all the rooms, I really like the sound of the small room with the glass doors shut, to be honest I was surprised on how big the drums sounded, there was some harshness from the symbols but maybe a different overhead miking technique or possibly different mics would fix that maybe some ribbons, well anyway that is to my ear, awesome vid!!
Wow. Never thought that the room made so much impact. Could you maybe upload the track of this recording? It would be awesome for further analysis. I watched the SoS video and was also a little dissapointed that they didn't show the close mic's. I had a problem once with a ringing snare and never thought it could be the room.. I swapped snares, mics you name it, retuned the whole kit just to have another ring pop up. I could never completely solve it and it drove me crazy... Good job on the video and keep it up. Your channel is quality stuff!

Thanks! Yes it’s possible to a degree. The best way I found is to put room mics behind something so you don’t get direct line of sight from the mic to the drums. And then add some good room IR reverb on that. Another, probably easier, way is to add samples to the drums with just the room sounds.

The room with the mirrors was the best room. The room with all the Marshall heads in it was dead, I wouldn't use that for anything, ever, unless ABBA got back together and really needed the sound of 1978 back.

Room 2 snare definitely has the fullness the song calls for. Tighter rooms usually works best for hard rock anyway given the more controlled response and less wash. Anyway, keep it up. I’ve been following your vids for 18mo or so now and I think you do it best. Produce Like A Pro is great but you get to the point and give more direction than Warren.

how did you get that toms sound in the smallest room? (the last one). I'm recording some demos with my band in a similar room, everything sounds acceptable except for the toms, the kick drum bleeds by the toms mics, the toms sound boomy and last to long. What would you recommend me to improve the sound of toms?

Love seeing videos like this. I really like the "stone cave" for its room sound, but the main live room close mics definitely sound the most usable. Based on your floorpan, I don't think there is a way where you could close mic the kit in the mail live room but add another room mic in the cave. Pretty far from the live room, no?
Using it as a chamber reverb could be cool. Put speakers in the room and mics somewhere pointing wherever it's sound the best
I actually liked the guitar iso room best when you included the music. For me it just sounded more focused and tight. Cymbals were a bit too harsh for me in the other rooms.

They all sound great in their own right. I think I prefer the glass room too, makes for HUGE snare and toms. Love roomy drum sound along with this kind of guitar and bass tone. Hell, I ALWAYS love spacious drums!

Yes, there are some compression to bring out the room (and to even out my amateur playing hehe). Some very minor eq, on the kick. Same on all takes of course.
first room for me it's the right compromise of a spacey yet focused sound...second room was ok but the bassdrum sounded weird
My bands been writing some music im going to start recording it. My mom is an elementary school teacher i was thinking about recording in the halls or gym to get a huge sound. Do you think itd be too live and too messy sounding in a hallway or gym?
That sounds like an awesome idea! If you can you should put gobos and damping around the kit so you get relatively dry signal in the close mics. That way you can blend with room mics to taste 👍
It's funny that the rock cliche is get the biggest room ever, but to me it feels intuitive that the bigger rooms will have a much cleaner, drier sound, which is not what I think about when I think about big rock drums. Of course, the drier the sounds, the easier it is to process and add ambience later, but if you're looking for that natural big sound, that's not the way to go

Room 1 was obviously the best but I think I liked room 4 the second best and it looked like the smallest room.
I'm not a big fan of that snare, it sounded pretty dead and damped, kinda like a 70s record, so I didn't hear much difference on it, maybe the tuning was too low for my taste.
But everything else sounded great and definitely noticed a huge difference.
I thought the sound was most boring in the smallest room.. no "life" at all.
BUT with that particular song and its sound characteristics, that "boring" sound fitted the best, while all the others sounded more or less out of place. At least to me... :P
The beauty of that room though is that you're free to use some really over the top verb during mixing, with the other rooms you're limited to the sound of that room since they have their own signature sound. The super dry room can also be really cool if you crush the drums with compression and heavy distortion too, especially for some stoner rock stuff

to me they are all better than AD2 . with the music, glass room matches the best
i got alot of bleed from the other mics and it always sounds like shit without EQing every Mic..Would love to have great audio without doing that everytime
