🕺🏻ABOUT DJ: DJ is a locomotive engineer for CSX Railroad since 1999. He has built dozens of layouts, gave presentations for model railroaders, is a TH-camr, licensed drone pilot, and a great father.
DJ, you make it look so easy and your conversational style is easy to listen to. Keep up the tutorials. I also love your drone photography. I'm 75 and about to start my first model railroad.
This is my favorite comment. Appreciate the compliment but am more happy to read you are starting your first one. If I inspired you, that just made my efforts worthwhile. Fantastic.
Hi, George. This really tickled me. We are both 75 and both starting our first layout. Not only that, but we actually resemble one another. If you're interested, I thought it would be fun to keep up with one another's progress along the way. If not, good luck with your project. We're in good hands with DJ.
@@Edward92546 I love this!!
@@Edward92546 can I join you and George? My name is Mike and I'm 73 years old . Starting my first layout too. I have my track on but not electrically connected. I'm hitting a wall here. We can exchange ideas with both of you guys. Thanks for any kind of response! Mike
@@michaelcipres4228 Hi Mike! Not having heard from George, I can't speak for him, but I'm all for sharing. I'm not on any social media network, which may or may not be a problem. Perhaps we could send our email address to DJ and he could forward them. You're ahead of me. I'm still on my bench work and then will get the plywood and Styrofoam. Nice to meet another DJ Disciple! 🙂
Edward
That was helpful. My pink foam board bench work has been sitting around for a couple of months because I’ve been struggling with how to make it look like the track fits the landscape. I think you’ve hit on something that can get me started again.
I'm 75 years old and building my first ever layout. Your videos are a tremendous help: the ideas, the presentation, the clarity of the explanations. I'm just now building my benchwork and am saving your videos to use as I progress. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Yeay!!!!!! You can do this!!!
Marking the scenery with paint to know where to cut out the landscape that will be on either side of the track. Brilliant!
Nice,
30 years ago I thought there was a Z scale layout in my future, but it never materialised and finally I donated the few items I had to colleagues. Now I'm fully content watching other people building small(ish) layouts I "could" have done but never did.
Always time to start. Make a 2'x4' N scale layout that you can store under a bed. Or a 6"x1' diorama for a shelf. Just try. :)
Loads of great info and how to"s in this video. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
That was amazing!!!!👊🏻 You make it look soooo easy!!!! lol I know you always say if you can do it so can I so I'm keeping my fingers crossed as I start out on this new adventure!!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
You got this!
@@djstrains Thanks for the support!!!👊🏻👍🏻
Great tips. Thanks for sharing as always DJ.
Nice video 👍 I love watching these how to videos.
Glad you like them!
You make it look esay....I like the nice look of it.....thanks for sharing 👍looking to seeing more on this one...
great job DJ👍👍👍👌
Finally! A nice layout update video! Awesome!
More to come!
What a fun video. I really enjoy how you blend the real life video shots with your layout. It gives a great perspective. Thanks for the tips on the scenery!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Спасибо, интересная технология построения макета. Thank you, interesting technology for building a layout.
Awesome DJ. Great help as always :)
Very inspiring! I have a couple of places on my 4 x 8 layout that look somewhat like this area, but I have been dragging my feet on how to complete it. This has given me some motivation to resume work on it.
You always do great work and make things easy to understand. I never thought about mixing the grass types, I ought to know considering how my own lawn looks. I get great ideas from you.
The one thing I have realized is that many store colors are too bright and need muted with dirt. Then unless its a golf coarse, it will be more of a blend.
Looks like you are moving along, DJ. Looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing, David
Always enjoy your videos. J&J used to make two foot long plaster splints that we used in the E.R. Just a cardboard box filled with pre-cut strips. The rolls work too, although I usually use several layers.
Your bowl of scenery looks good enough to smoke!
Great tips dj. Looking great 👍
Great video! The layout looks great and is really coming along!
It really is!
For all of you foam cutters out there, check out the Bosch foam cutting jigsaw blades. I have been using them and it is a real game changer when cutting the thick foam sheets. Clean and quick!
Probably buy one today.
You made it look easy. Due to the geographic area I will tend to create with my layout most of the track is above the scenery or at the same level. I can use similar techniques for some of my lower wetter scenery areas.
Great tutorial, thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the very helpful Video.Greetings from Germany.
Honored to have your viewership.
Just getting into this hobby. Your videos are very helpful for a beginner thanks!
Glad to hear it! They are organized into PLAYLISTS on my channel. I hope you can find more that fit your needs.
Great video DJ and I too was wondering how you'd hide the risers w landscaping etc! You definitely did it and nobody would ever guess there were risers underneath it. I'm using the casting material as well once I get to that point. Nice job and thanks for sharing this video and look fwd to seeing the next one!
Thanks for sharing your quality content keep up the good work 👏👏👏👏
your hand makes the best trowel for scenery molding
Absolutely
I’m new to model railroading and starting with z scale. Really enjoy your videos
Welcome. Even though I do N and larger, the info I provide should still help you. See my PLAYLISTS on my channel to help your search.
Thanks for sharing knowledge. Enjoyed a few of your videos and subscribed. I have been considering making a small set up for many years but, keep putting it off. Anyway, I will be back if just to watch your ideas. Many ways to skin that feline and its good to have options. Cheers.
Start small Even a 2’x4’ plywood that you can store under a bed. Just start
Looks great! I'm not real happy with my first time adding scenic, but it's not bad, and a learning experience. My next build will be better
You can do it!
The next build is always better.....and the next...and the next....
Thanks for the great video! I really liked the idea of putting 1 inch foam between the track and the edge of the layout. I need to explore that more. I gotta say, I am not a fan of S-curves on layouts. Do you encounter a lot of S-curves in your job as an Engineer? Cheers and take care.
Yes, a funny story. Years ago a train dispatcher rode my train from Connellsville to McKeesport. He was shocked that it is all curves. He said "On my screen, its a straight line!" LOL!!! Not much straight tracks because we parallel rivers and around mountains, so my layout represents that.
Some of the first road trains I ran were in the Mid-West. Flat track. Very minor grade changes. You could hop on your power and literally take your consist to the next point without ever being able to look back over your train. Piece of cake. Then I ran over mountainous terrain on a regional railroad that had been built over an old logging railroad. I could sometimes see my 60 car train twice. Very different railroading. By the way, on my HO layout where I needed an S curve I made it as gradual as possible.
Love your idea, please invest in a hot foam wire cutter. Much easier and cleaner. Keep up the great videos. I really enjoy them
Thank you! Will do!
I'm definitely feeling stuck, but this really helps! I"m also doing N scale Kato Unitrack. I have my track plan, but haven't decided if I want to model East Coast or West Coast. I live in Pittsburgh, but I grew up in CA and feel kinda nostalgic.
depending on the size of your layout you can do both :) Even a smaller layout can have two scenic areas like the greenery and waterways of Pennsylvania on one side and the California gold country foothills, Sierra's, or Southern deserts with a scenic divider to separate them. Here is an example from Trackside Scenery th-cam.com/video/ukWZlwLSMeQ/w-d-xo.html
Exactly
can you do a tour of your route sometime? i'm fairly new to the channel and would love to see what you have made as i am developing something in trainz for the pittsburgh area. keep up the good work, I love watching your videos.
Sure thing!
Hey brother. Love to hear your take on the BNSF STRIKE. I know a few guys that just hate there job now because of what they wanted to do going to the point system like Walmart does.
I haven't looked into it. CSX just announced that its not going to pull us out of service for bullshit and instead give us "Coaching and counseling". But I have 5, count em, 5 train masters over my head everyday..5. in a small terminal
@@djstrains Gezz as most with most big Corps WAY to many "CHIEFS" watching us Indians!
Yes there are lots of scenery videos, but yours are great! I like your pacing and projects.👍🇨🇦 I can see why that “brown” paint got returned 😂, but perfect for a layout!!!
hahaha, yeah, not ideal color for a bathroom wall, right?
Can I assume, D.J., that you're using the Woodland Scenics' risers so you can have below-track scenery more easily. That appears to at least be part of its purpose. I really like the outcome of your efforts. The before/after difference is amazing.
Yes, the prototype goes up hill and eventually over the river. Coming soon!
Excellent as usual, DJ. What did you use for the roadway as shown? Looks like something you can just put down without mixing up asphalt or concrete, etc. I need to put in some roads soon. Thanks and cheers, Bob

Check out Mike fiber on covering riser.
Fifer. Great guy, great videos, great hobby store!!
Hi :) It's funny how "tastes" can vary. ;) Myself I really don't like using plaster cloth and sculptamold :P In fact, except the paint and the glue, I am avoiding anything which is wet and takes time to dry. I directly carve all the rocks and ground shapes in the foam itself. Cheers ! :)
I have also done that on previous layouts and in some videos. I’m trying to show a variety of techniques. Everything except the chicken wire lol
@@djstrains Hehe, but some people really love this chicken wire ;) I forgot to mention that one more reason for avoiding plaster and sculptamold is the weight. I can move my network modules alone as they weight less than 10 kilos per square meter each ;)
I have 2 smaller networks build on a standard styrofoam sheet (125 cm by 60 cm) and I can move them alone with no issue :) . But what is nice is indeed to see all possible techniques :) Have a nice day ! :)
How about full strength white glue for the foam layers?
Id advise against that. White glue is for more porous materials, so it won't bond well. Liquid nails and hot glue adhere better and permanent.
@@djstrains Thanks, I did not consider that, although I can get white glue for free. I’m always looking not to spend a lot & use what I’ve already got-if I can find it! The south shore of Lake Erie, where I hail from, has fantastic RR museums in Conneaut, Oh & North East, Pa. where they even have a Little Joe electric! Worth a road trip “ mup-here” from Pittsburg.
i have used full strength Elmer's Glue All with good results. I have read it's different in make up than Elmer's school glue. I have tacked the foam down after application and used cans of food or books to hoId the foam in place until the glue dries. So far after being down for a year it is holding well. I buy it on line in 32 oz containers since it's cheaper than buying it in the store. I use the glue for everything on the layout that needs gluing down.
i so bad want to get into the hobby, but logistics are a problem as my room is too small and i am trying to take care of a puppy who likes to chew everything up but i hope for my new adventur starting on my birthday
start with n scale, 2'x4' plywood, and keep it under your bed. Start something
@@djstrains i would put it on my christmas list
@@djstrains where is there a hobby store carrying n scale in east Tx? any suggestions
@@maxmillianlanders3148 I too have a small n scale layout. I expanded mine to 2.5'x4' so I didn't have to have a really small radius to my oval. It is a double track, and I have 3 stub end (?) sidings, and two places with turnouts between the inside and outside loop. Of course, I've always wanted to make a mountain, so I'm making it on one corner. I've put 2" foam on a piece of hard board and glued it with gorilla glue. I've just drilled down for wiring, which is just track power. I'm not worried about any light for buildings or lamps. Of course, with the mountain it won't fit under a bed now at all, but it would have before. If you have a place to put a wire shelf on a wall, you could probably fit it up there if it was simple enough.
Curious: Wondering if you have played around with modular modal RR systems. I am currently working on some T-Trak modules, and really like it a lot. It is not the most prototypical system, but I love the flexibility and simplicity of it.
I used modules for most previous layouts. I work differently than most.
1:58 - I don't see any paint on the left side of that riser. How did you get the 2nd piece of pink foam cut to perfect?
I guesstimated 2 inches from the edge of that remaining piece, since it was the same curvature.
Would it add interest if the terrain was not flat everywhere? You've got cool cutouts and such but between, perfectly flat...
Keep watching

I wish I had an easy way to transport foam board so I could start "permanently" laying track and getting scenery in place.
I have a small SUV. I bring a steak knife in the car and cut a 4'x8' sheet in the parking lot. Most sheets already have precut lines at 16".
Some times I rush with plaster cloth , I some times it doesn't dry
Are you using good plaster cloth from woodland scenics or scenic express?
@@djstrains I like your style of narration for your videos, bro. Really laid back and supportive of ppl getting into the hobby. I've been using a plaster cloth called "rigid wrap" I ordered from Amazon. It's almost identical to the WS and SE products although it doesn't seem to have as much plaster packed into the mesh, but you can get a 5 lb roll for about $25 I think which is pretty good considering hobby name brands are pricey lol. It doesn't have pre-cut sections though either so I put it in a shoe box with a slot cut into the box and pull out what I need and then cut it off with scissors. All in all, I really like it. It does the exact same thing as the other brands but I can admit that the name brands have a bit more ease of use.
Is there anyway you can sell DJ's Trains retailers in n scale?? Definitely would purchase to match my mug.
I'm going to be looking into different merchandise ideas this year. Thanks, my friend!!

you obviously have a very low self confidence when it comes to this. Not sure why. Name ONE thing that I can do that you cant? Im not a rocket scientist. This isn't brain surgery. $5. says you haven't even TRIED. Prove me wrong.
