Spent an evening up here back in the summer. Shot a train coming out of the tunnel from the road bridge. The modeling is fantastic! I can pinpoint all the places I was that day. Great job!
This is so awesome, I grew up in plum. I've been to the cement factory many of times and never new this much about it. It's even better to see it modeled in N scale. Thank you so much DJsTrains
I lay track but dont ballast it, then just lay down 1" blue masking tape over the track and the area that will be ballested, works perfect to protect track while working around it. I need to do it reverse as I have never layed track or run trains before, if I had made the layout I imagined first it would have been a disaster, nothing would have run well, derailing and struggling up grades and way to tight of curvature. I made a whole layout in cardboard and foam and other scrap materials. Then saw what worked running trains, and built sections of wood permanent benchwork and layout as I confirmed each section functioned correctly. I am new to model railroading but have professional training and experience in prototype model making for industrial design, so I went with the methods I was familiar with.
Many thanks DJ, I'm in the process of making a small layout in ho around the room (13'x9') a small train room , also I'm a French modeller and our country side differs plus our train run on the left, I have watch you're old videos and appreciate you're how to witch are a great source of inspiration just like this one, again thanks for sharing. Regards from La Réunion
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Juan Asa Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out atm. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Looks go DJ, like the roads they look like all our roads out here in the west after all the storms. Don't paint the Facia it looks like read dirt that way....thanks for sharing....Jack 🙂
The misses and I finally have found a new home, with a basement of course! In a couple months when I begin construction, and of course in between what rest and time I get off between pool runs (you know all about that DJ....) I'm considering just using 2" foam and bypassing the wood base. I figure if I need a solid surface below the foam somewhere, I could just hot glue some thick styrene under the foam at the opening. What's your opinion Dj? Anyone else?
Hi, after using plywood and homisode, then 2" foam by it self, In hind sight I would use 1" foam on top of 3/8th plywood as the base. Maybe the best of both worlds!? Scott
I just seen a recommendation for you on a n scale FB group. I really appreciate the fact that your not a professional, just give it a shot! Theres a lot of pro level videos on here that I find just waaay too intimidating. And like you said, have fun! Definitely subscribed!
Thank you. I screw things up all the time, lol. Just keep going, try again, etc. Many people are afraid to even try. Start small, keep it simple and just enjoy creating.
Gotta love California and the warning stickers on EVERYTHING !! Great video ....looks like you have to a ton of work on it. Wondering if we will get a complete layout update ?
Great video and great tutorial on scenery! I subscribe to a few modelers channels but you are my favorite to tune in to- I think you're awesome! Very cool to see your layout and the steps from plywood to scenery, looks great! Thanks again for all the inspiring train videos DJ!! 👍👍🚂🙂
I drilled a hole for feeder wires before I glued the mainline down. Since the plywood was so thin, and the foam was only an inch thick, it wasn't hard to fish them through.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING DJ! You make it look so easy and w little effort. I'm sold on using the casting material when I finally get to work on mine! The scenery w the trees, grass etc looks great! The grain facility you have, what make is it? I've drawn my layout on a sketch pad and I've chosen a GRAIN MILL and a CEMENT COMPANY so far. I think I want 1 more but have to narrow my choices. Once again, great job and thanks for sharing your videos as always DJ!
DJ I wish you were my neighbor to help me get my layout started. I am overwhelmed with where or how to begin. I have no standing track plan which would help me tremendously yet even with the plan I simply do not know where or how to even begin designing a track plan. I never thought I would have all the supplies on hand to begin but not knowing how to begin....
Hello dj on jaw tooth channel today 1/23/2022 he found a switch that was heated on the CSX in Kentucky and it was on,could you please elaborate on the switch....Thxs...
Nearly all our POWERED switches (dispatcher controlled) in my area have a heater to keep them from freezing on days like today. The MOW guys keep them maintained. I'm not sure if I have footage in one of my videos, but I'll look into showing it in a video someday, thanks.
@@djstrains And thxs to you dj yeah it never dawn on me that there something like a heated switches, makes sense...Ok thxs look forward for you comments....Again thxs...Ed..
@@62ejo fwiw - "back in the day" when I was working for CN Signals, I was installing the new-at-the-time CTC (Centralized Track Control) system at all the sidings west of Edmonton to Jasper and beyond. Part of this included installing switch heaters. Some sidings used propane-fuel heaters while others were oil-fuled, so there had to be appropriate fuel-storage tanks at the sites as well and access roads for delivery trucks to get to them. Basically the heaters were just some plumbed in 'jets' mounted along the outsides of the rails. These jets were covered with sheet-metal tops to keep out dirt and debris and concentrate the heat onto the outsides of the rails. Are you going to model some of these on your layout? Cheers.
Your old layouts all look so good. I'm so glad you documented so much of it for our enjoyment and education!
Love the way you breakdown step by step for antone to create very nice scenery.
Glad you liked it!
I like your poly fiber technique! Def reminds me of woods in western PA.

Great job, I like your thoughts on starting with the scenery first.
Seeing these vids gets me excited and thinking about how Id like to start working on a little layout. You are knowledgeable and fun to watch.
Great timing! I was putting down the ballast on my track and I get a notification of your vid. Whooooooooooo

Very nice how to video ! Pvc pipes are perfect when building a cementplant. Made one for my Pennsylvania layout. Thanks for the video !

Looks great needed that little encouragement ! Kinda frustrated right now but this helped tremendously thanks
Once again great use of levels without making the landscape look too unrealistic due to proportions.
Very cool DJ you have awesome videos and you have a awesome day
nice all that done in a weekend afternoon.
You seriously are the funniest guy on TH-cam. lmao
Impressive! I like your statement "I can do this you can do this" Ity' looks great and you gave me a few new ideas.
Glad to hear it!
Great video. Very easy to follow and great results. I’ll keep this one in mind when it comes time to do scenery on my layout. Thanks DJ. Papadan

good ideal doing the scenery first then tracks.
Look incredible :D.. and YESS.. you should mix scales .. if you build everything in the same scale it would look odd.. keep it up DJ ^^
I reckon what I like most is that you are doing layouts of actual places during specific time periods.
Yes. I often say I am not an artist, but a duplicator. I just take what I see and model it smaller. That way its exactly what I want.
Well done, DJ. 👍
Thanks for the vid !!!
THANK YOU...for sharing.
GREAT video D.J. Thank you-Bob

Very nice that was really a nice quick explain to move quickly.
Dang bro I thought that you were Bob Ross when you were doing your background trees.😀 Great job.👍
I was Bob Ross once, lol, remember.....th-cam.com/video/mG_y7B-VF4A/w-d-xo.html
And we're gonna put some happy little trees in the background... they live right there. 😂😊❤
Drone time for under the ductwork lol, well done sir !
You got that right!
Can I ask how you deal with wiring the track after doing all the scenic work?
That's a great video and very helpful. Thanks for sharing.

Looks great! I like the depot. Is it a kit or scratchbuilt?
It was an old cast resin assembled building. I forgot where i got it, its that old, lol.
Great job.
THANKS!!
Measure twice cut once
Measure twice and mess it up anyway 😂😂😂
What Is The Age To Start A Layout With Scenery
8. That seems to be an age where they have some patience, can work with elmers glue, and still have a fun imagination.
👍👍

holy cr*p the size of your layout is bigger than my house!
its only 13' x 12', but its n scale.
